Well, wishing for a magic wand in this digital era may not fetch you anything but the same digital world can empower you with the knowledge to be aware of all the risk factors that can be worked upon to clear up hindrances towards a healthy life. One major disease that the world, especially India, is facing is heart disease also known as cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVDs are a range of disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels. It has been found that India has one of the highest burdens of cardiovascular disease (CVD) worldwide. According to a study by InterHeart, CVD risk factors such as abdominal obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are higher among Indians, even at young ages, than among other ethnic groups. This may be due to an underlying genetic predisposition to metabolic deregulation and cardiomyopathy as well as the indulgences towards unhealthier food choices consisting of excessive red meats, saturated fats, trans fats, sodium, sugars, alcohol, tobacco, low fibre diet and lack of physical activities.

    There are modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors responsible for CVDs. While one has no control over non-modifiable factors like genetic predisposition, gender, ethnicity or age, there is a lot of scope for making changes in modifiable risk factors like diet, exercise, stress management and avoidance of smoking and alcohol indulgences. There is scientific evidence to claim that nutrition might be the best preventive factor for CVD deaths.

    These are some of the practical nutritional tips that can help one come back to a healthy eating habit:

    1.Start working on one habit at a time. Cut down on all the calorie and sugar-laden foods, fatty, deep-fried foods. Keep them as an occasional treat and that too in a controlled portion. Having such foods several times on weekdays and (not to mention the weekends) will certainly add up extra fat deposits around the abdomen as your energy expenditure does not match the super-sized indulgence.

    2.Cut down on carbonated drinks, sugary beverages and many other processed foods which have sugar hidden under several names. Refined carbohydrates are one of the main causes leading to all lifestyle diseases.

    3.After cutting down on all the ‘excesses’, start working on the portion size of the regular meals. When it is more than needed, try starting meals with salads, raitas or soups and then go to the main course of chapatis or rice. Vegetable salads can be steamed, grilled or boiled if there is intolerance towards raw salads. Salads consisting of vegetables and sprouts add fibre to the diet, give you a feeling of fullness and will stop you from overloading your plate. This has to be practised for every meal of the day consistently.

    4.Sodium plays a pivotal role in cardiac health. Excess intake of salt, salted products, and processed foods containing sodium must be curbed.

    5.Add food from all food groups that is less processed cereals, pulses, sprouts, dry fruits and nuts, vegetables and fruits, skimmed versions of dairy foods and lean meat. Take care of the portion size. Avoid ultra-processed foods.

    6. Keep your gut healthy because good gut microbiota helps in overall well-being and also boosts immunity.

    7. Get guidance from a qualified dietitian and follow consistently rather than getting carried away with fad diet information from various unprofessional sources because diet is not about only calorie restriction but rather a comprehensive approach which considers all the facets of health.

    These are all required to ensure an intake of all the macro and micronutrients needed for the human body. Combine a clean eating habit with exercise and stress management to reduce the risk factor for heart disease.

    After going through the endless paperwork and sorting out the renovations, it’s finally time to move into your brand-new home. Except for the fact that you have so much stuff in your current place — where do you even start?

    Well, you can take a chill pill because we’ve done all the homework for you. We got chu, fam.

    Figure out the logistics

    First, decide if you are going to DIY and ask a friend for a favour, or seek help from professional movers. If you’re opting for the latter, get at least three quotations from reputable companies before making your decision.

    Scour Google and Carousell reviews just to be extra sure, or ask your family and friends for lobang. Ideally, the best time to search for movers is 6-8 weeks before your moving date, so you won’t be pressured into hiring a mover at an insane price at the last minute.

    The big plan

    Scout around the new place so you can map out what moving day is going to be like, e.g. where the mover’s lorry is going to park, and how you will be getting the stuff to your front door.

    Go one step further and plan where all your furniture is going to be placed. This can save yourself the headache of trying to lift the heavy items later.

    Declutter, purge, repeat

    The next step is to Marie Kondo your current place. Use up or give away all the perishable items, like those leftovers you dabao-ed a few weeks ago sitting in the fridge.

    Decide which pieces of furniture spark joy, and donate the rest to charity or sell them on Carousell. Ask yourself, “Do I truly need this?” especially if you haven’t used said item in months or over a year.

    The smart way to pack

    Now comes the dreaded part of the move — packing (ugh). Get thrifty by reusing old boxes around the house or asking family and friends for packing supplies like boxes and bubble wrap.

    Colour-code the boxes or label them by destination i.e. bedroom, kitchen, living room. Use towels and linens to cushion your fragile items. Small resealable bags, like the ones you use for sandwiches, are also great for storing small items.

    What about my furkids?

    During the big move, keep your pets away from the action. It would be best if you can leave your furkids with a friend or at a pet hotel for the day.

    But if that is not an option, then you could remove them from all the noise and chaos by emptying a room for them and closing the door. Check in on them regularly, and try to feed or walk them at the time you usually would so that there is still a sense of routine.

    Prepare a Day 1 survival kit

    It’s going to be hectic on the first day moving into the new home. Make your life easier by packing an overnight bag with essentials like clothing and toiletries, as well as Day 1 unpacking must-haves like a cutter/penknife, paper towels, wet tissue, and trash bags. Don’t forget the snacks too to keep yourself sane!

    Must-do’s before moving out

    Lastly, go through this quick checklist before you leave your old place for good:

    • Thoroughly clean the place, especially if you’re renting, or risk losing your deposit. You might want to engage a professional to give the place a good scrub.
    • For condos, check with your building management if you need to apply for the professional movers to access the building.
    • Renters, take pictures of your old place one final time before leaving as proof that you have left it the same condition as when you moved in.
    • Also, don’t forget to take pictures of your utility meters for cross-checking your utility bills and in the event of any disputes.
    • Update your new home address for all billing organisations, including your bank, telco, etc.

    The most important tip is to start this entire process early. Give yourself loads of time so that you’re prepared for any emergencies. At the end of the day, the moving journey is only temporary. It will all be worth it when you’re tucked in for bed in your new home.

    If the 2010s were all about the resurgence of gin, the 2020s are all about the rise and rise of Indian gin. Distilleries that are thinking out of the box, mixologists who are resetting India’s artisanal cocktail template, and well-heeled Indian travellers who are back on the road after the brief pause during the pandemic. Indian gins are enjoying the global spotlight like never before. If you’re shopping for a fine Indian gin this Diwali season, you will spoilt for choice.

    Himmaleh Spirits in the heart of Uttarakhand has just released Kumaon and I, India’s first provincial gin with a farm-to-bottle approach. All the botanicals are sourced locally in tandem with farming communities in the region. In May 2023 Broken Bat by Nao Spirits was picked as the Best Gin in Asia at the Gin Guide Awards 2023 The gin makers opted for a process that used Kashmir willow (used for cricket bats) to celebrate India’s love for cricket instead of traditional oak barrels.

    Origins:

    The earliest references to Gin probably go back to the 16th Century. By that time there were many Flemish distillers (in modern-day Netherlands and Belgium) that were distilling Genever, the precursor to Gin with juniper berries. Genever was a common fix for stomach and kidney ailments. The British shortened Genenver to Gin and by the 1700s it became one of the most widely distilled spirits in Britain. The first versions of Genever also used herbs and spices like anise, caraway, and coriander along with Juniper berries.

    Types of Gin:

    There’s no clear classification for gin, this has allowed various interpretations of the spirit to blossom over the years. Strictly speaking, Juniper berries need to be the main flavouring agent for a gin to be classified as a gin but there are quite a few modern gins that don’t use juniper berries. Most juniper berries grow in the wild unlike grapes for wine that tend to be cultivated methodically. There is no restriction on the number of Botanicals for flavours – each gin has a different count. Kumaon and I use Himalayan juniper along with 10 other locally sourced Botanicals from the Kumaon region in Uttarakhand. Hapusa is another Indian gin that uses Himalayan juniper. Distilleries today either use the pot still method or column stills and many pot-stilled gins are stored in casks just like whiskey.

    There are different types of gins but you’re mostly likely to come across a London Dry or Distilled gins. London Dry is arguably the quintessential gin with natural ingredients and flavourings that need to be part of the original distillation process. Flavours and colours are never added after the distillation process. London Dry doesn’t necessarily have to be distilled in London. Distilled Gin follows a similar process as London Dry but the flavouring can be added after distillation. Many modern gins follow this process as newer flavouring agents have emerged.

    How to enjoy a fine Indian gin

    Ansh Khanna and Samarth Prasad, the architects of Kumaon & I, believe that you should never be afraid to drink your gins neat. I agree. We tend to look for cocktail recipes almost immediately after we buy our first bottle of gin. I’d recommend savouring a small measure of gin with a simple tonic or soda water to understand its flavour profile. This allows you to start experimenting with ingredients for your cocktail mix. Once you’ve done that, try one of the simple Gin and Tonics. G&Ts originated in India as early as the 19th Century and G&Ts have evolved quite a bit over the last couple of decades. Once you’ve aced a few G&Ts, it’s time to try some cocktails. As you understand your flavour preferences, you can also try incorporating seasonal Indian ingredients into your cocktails for a unique botanical journey. I’ve tried everything from fresh turmeric to Gondhoraj lemon (a popular ingredient in many Bengali homes) to create a unique twist to classic gin cocktails.

    • 2-3 Basil leaves
    • Grapefruit Juice 90 ml

    • Method: Shaken
    • Shake all ingredients and then add ice and shake. Strain it over ice in an old-fashioned glass and splash off the tonic. Garnish with grapefruit and basil leaves.
