    ‘I could cry from happiness’

    Odds are you’re reading this while multitasking. Whether it’s cooking and listening to a podcast or watching TV and scrolling the web, we’re a generation of multitaskers. But is that a good thing?

    One person decided it’s not — and their migration away from constant busyness changed their life.

    They wrote about it on the subreddit r/minimalism, saying: “I suffered from a burnout earlier this year and it really made me reflect on my life. I used to multitask from the moment I woke up until I fell asleep. This reflected severely on my environment too, as there was always chaos that took me ages to tidy up and brought even more stress.”

    They started by “clearing my schedule and limiting the apps on my phone.” And along with their mental decluttering, they looked at their home. “I started to declutter and I threw away 5!! bags of stuff,” they wrote. “I’m living pretty small so it’s baffling to think I even got so many things in here.” 

    “Might be the biggest change I have ever made,” they shared. “I still have a long way to go, but I am already so relieved I could cry from happiness.”

    Commenters congratulated them. “Well done you!” one wrote. “I decluttered hugely and then painted my front room a nice pink, solely because I needed to feel safe and calm. It worked.”

    Adopting minimalism doesn’t mean tossing everything you own. Instead, consider whether something is serving a purpose. That plate of your grandmother’s that you don’t often use but makes you smile whenever you see it? That stays. The shirt you haven’t worn in two years but “might need” one day? That can go.

    And much of what you declutter can be repurposed. As one commenter shared: “I give usable items I have purged to a friend who runs a Buy Nothing/Mutual Aid group. Everything gets re-homed to people who can benefit directly. It makes decluttering that much sweeter.”

    Other than giving to your community, choosing to be even slightly more minimalist means that you’ll save money by buying and wasting less — which has the added benefit of reducing your carbon footprint.

    “I never thought that idea would sound appealing to me but defeating the ‘What am I without possessions’ notion of consumerism has been one of the best things I’ve done for my mental health,” one commenter said.

    With India’s fast-ageing population, the health and happiness of seniors are becoming increasingly important and by 2026, more than 180 million will cross the age of 60 years, of which a considerable number will fight mental health issues like anxiety disorder or depression or even loss of cognitive ability. The 2023 India Ageing Report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) refers to an approximate increase of 279% in the population aged 80-plus years between 2022 and 2050, with high dependence upon elderly women.

    In view of these statistics, following are the ways parents can effectively manage age-related challenges and we can promote a more fulfilling and independent life for seniors –

    1. Physical Activity and Exercise

    In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aanchal Choudhary, Consultant – Internal Medicine at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Noida Extension, shared, “Evidence supports that regular physical activity is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility in seniors. Engaging in a structured exercise program that includes aerobic, resistance and flexibility training has been shown to mitigate the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.”

    Bringing her expertise to the same, Sama Beg, Chief Product Officer at Emoha revealed, “Regular exercise can keep both the body and mind fit. In the case of the elderly, it reduces stress, lightens their mood, and enhances brain function with low-impact exercises like brisk walking, swimming or some gentle Yoga. A caregiver can encourage elders to make physical activities part of their everyday routine by attending exercise classes, working on hobbies, or just going out in nature.”

    2. Nutrition and Diet

    Dr Aanchal Choudhary recommended, “Adequate nutrition is fundamental for maintaining health and preventing age-related decline. A diet characterised by high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is associated with reduced incidence of chronic diseases and improved cognitive health. Key nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and antioxidants, are particularly beneficial for mitigating the effects of aging on the brain and immune system.”

    Sama Beg said, “One of the keystones to living a holistic lifestyle is a good diet. Our nutritional needs change as we age, and our diets need to be full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Additionally, muscle mass must be maintained, and this can be achieved in seniors only through a combination of proper diet and exercise. Moreover, they should drink a lot of water to keep themselves hydrated as this is key to maintaining their energy and general health.”

    3. Mental Health and Cognitive Engagement

    Highlighting that cognitive decline is a prevalent concern in the elderly but engaging in intellectually stimulating activities can slow this process, Dr Aanchal Choudhary advised that activities such as problem-solving tasks, learning new skills and social interactions are linked to enhanced cognitive function.

    Sama Beg pointed out, “One of the biggest challenges seniors face is social isolation which does have impacts on the mental and physical health of an aging person. Such loneliness is caused by retirement, mobility issues, and the loss of a loved one in the later years of life. Social connections are essential for older adults. Caregivers play a vital role in providing companionship, engaging in conversations and facilitating social interactions. Keeping them engaged in community activities, support groups or even just staying in touch with their families and friends can help boost their mood and create a sense of belonging.”

    4. Sleep Hygiene

    Dr Aanchal Choudhary asserted, “Quality sleep is crucial for physical and mental health. Seniors often experience alterations in sleep patterns, which can impact overall health. Through practices such as maintaining a cool, dark and quiet bedroom—can improve sleep quality and mitigate issues such as insomnia or fragmented sleep.”

    5. Preventive Health Care

    “Regular medical evaluations and preventive screenings are critical for early detection and management of health conditions. Routine screenings for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, along with up-to-date vaccinations, are essential for preventing and managing chronic diseases,” said Dr Aanchal Choudhary.

    6. Cognitive Stimulation and Care

    Given that the risk of cognitive decline, including dementia, increases in old age, Sama Beg said, “Structured routines, wherein activities are scheduled to provide cognitive stimulation, can be very helpful for older individuals. Activities like doing crossword puzzles, reading or attending some educational classes/workshops can exercise cognitive functioning and enhance a feeling of accomplishment. The caregivers need to be aware of the progress of the dementia stages, offer proper support and enable the elderly to negotiate these challenges with dignity and purpose.”

    7. Regular Medical Check-ups and Professional Support

    Sama Beg concluded, “Timely medical check-ups and diagnostic tests can help identify potential health issues before they get worse. From dental care to vision, and hearing check-ups, or monitoring chronic conditions like hypertension or diabetes, staying on top of health concerns is vital. If seniors experience persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or cognitive decline, seeking professional support is crucial. Early intervention and appropriate treatment can make a significant difference in keeping their conditions under control.”

    James Packer is set to tell all in a candid discussion on his mental health in an upcoming episode of 7NEWS Spotlight. 

    The billionaire is joined by good friend, English singer Robbie Williams, in the chat with journalist Liam Bartlett. 

    Packer confesses that ‘money is not a guarantee of happiness’ in a preview for the episode, which airs on Sunday.  

    ‘I’m not here to play the victim… it’s a journey,’ Packer tells Bartlett in the footage. 

    ‘You’re not interviewing someone who’s saying to you, “I’ve got it worked out and I’ve got all the answers,”‘ he continued. 

    ‘I’m not that person. I’m here saying I’m doing my best.’

    Williams will also open up on his own journey, and in the preview said he relates to Packer’s struggle.

    ‘[It’s] the same sort of illness that we share. It’s a disease of isolation,’ Williams says.

    In recent years, Packer has said he is now the ‘happiest’ he’s been, after shedding 25kg in 75 days and ditching the seven mood-altering drugs he was taking to help with his mental health. 

    ‘I’m roughly 130kg now and want to be back to 100kg by the end of 2022. I want to swim with my kids at Bondi when we’re all in Sydney together next year and be 100kg,’ he told The Weekend Australian from his home in in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at the time. 

    The businessman said he quit the antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs he was prescribed in March, and is now looking to ‘rehabilitate’ his reputation in Australia.

    The book also outlines some of the darkest moments of his life and how he went from inheriting a fortune to battling anxiety and depression; three times, he has come back from nervous breakdowns.

    There were multiple contributing factors that combined to his downward spiral. 

    Scandals marred his jet-set lifestyle, from a deal that saw him under scrutiny based on his political ties in Israel to a legal quagmire in China when officials from Crown Resorts, where he served as director, were detained in relation to illegal gambling charges.

    Even his Tinseltown dreams were tainted – with the $100 million collapse of his production company RatPac with Hollywood producer Brett Ratner.

    In the midst of his despair, Packer reveals he turned to old friend Warren Beatty, and spent years living in the Hollywood star’s guest house, eventually calling him ‘Dad’ – though he’s keen to point out that means no disrespect to his later father, Kerry, who engineered so much of the family’s runaway business success.

    Packer counts numerous household names among his friends – from Robert de Niro to Leonardo DiCaprio – and since his youth was firmly entrenched in the celebrity set, even flirting with Scientology for a time before distancing himself from the church, in the vein of so many box-office actors and actresses.

    The book describes Packer’s personal torment, drink and mental issues, which the billionaire describes as ‘very scary.’ 

    He says he came to the realization his problems were only ‘getting worse’ – causing him to be ‘desperately worried,’ according to the extract in The Australian.

    Beatty is notorious for avoiding media interviews but he chose to sit down and talk about Packer for the book, a sign of how much he values and cares for the man. 

    The actor would be the one who helped Packer finally seek help, referring him to a top psychiatrist who immediately asked him: ‘Are you trying to kill yourself?’

    ‘I don’t know if I started crying, but I thought to myself, “I don’t want to have $1.4 billion of debt any more. Why am I doing this?”‘ Packer said at the time. 

    The father-of-three said he is now excited to begin his ‘third act’ and plans to ease back into public life in Australia.
