Prince Harry says harms of social media have created an ‘epidemic’ for today’s youth

NEW YORK — Prince Harry said today’s youth is in the midst of an “epidemic” of anxiety, depression and social isolation due to negative experiences online, as he brought his campaign to help children and their parents navigate cyberspace to this week’s Clinton Global Initiative.

“These platforms are designed to create addiction,” Harry said in remarks Tuesday in New York City. “Young people are kept there by mindless, endless, numbing scrolling — being force-fed content that no child should ever be exposed to. This is not free will.”

Beyond supporting parents and youth throughout this advocacy, The Duke of Sussex stressed the need for corporate accountability. He asked why leaders of powerful social media companies are still held to the “lowest ethical standards” — and called on shareholders to demand tangible change.

“Parenting doesn’t end with the birth of a child. Neither does founding a company,” Harry said. “We have a duty and a responsibility to see our creations through.”

Harry’s contribution to this year’s CGI annual meeting was part of the “What’s Working” theme, in a panel that included former President Bill Clinton, Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton and World Central Kitchen founder Jose Andres.

The Archewell Foundation, which Harry founded with his wife, Meghan Markle, to carry out their philanthropic work recently launched an initiative supporting parents whose children have suffered or died due to online harms. Harry highlighted the work of that initiative, called The Parents Network, in his speech Tuesday.

The foundation has also partnered with the World Health Organization and others to end violence against children, an issue he and Meghan outlined during a recent trip to Colombia. Harry on Tuesday pointed to the inaugural Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, which is set to take place in Bogotá this November. He said that this meeting could result in the first global agreement for prioritizing child safety and protection online.

His CGI address was part of a string of appearances for Harry in New York at the growing number of humanitarian and philanthropic events that run alongside the United Nations General Assembly Week.

On Monday, he appeared at an event for The HALO Trust, where he discussed how the work of the landmine clearing charity was influential on his late mother, Princess Diana. “The HALO Trust’s work in Angola meant a great deal to my mother,” he said. “Carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take seriously. And I think we all know how much she would want us to finish this particular job.”

Harry and Meghan’s team has since hit back, describing the report as false.

One source also claimed to The Daily Beast that the quotes were “fabricated by someone lacking knowledge of our company”, as the royal couple work from their home in Montecito, near LA, and their staff are based in Hollywood.

“They likely think we’re all in the same office and that this quote would fly, but the circumstances don’t even allow for it,” the source said.

“If she’s ‘marching around’ and ‘barking orders’ no Archewell employee could factually claim that. It’s total nonsense.”

The Hollywood Reporter piece has since been followed by another unflattering report in the Daily Mail, in which a source, described as a “senior Hollywood publicist”, pointed out an odd detail about the original claims.

“Everyone, industry-wide, reads The Hollywood Reporter. It’s really striking that [Harry and Meghan’s public relations firm] WME did not stop this running.

“WME normally – you would think – would have been threatening and denying access to other stars. Was this done here?” the insider questioned.

“The only thing the Sussexes could rally with was ‘no comment at this time’ from a spokesman.”

The Mail also pointed out that the Sussexes were also recently the target of a scathing review on another Hollywood industry site, Puck, which described their reported $100 million-plus Netflix deal as the “worst” of the “peak TV period”.

Puck also claimed the costly deal is not expected to be renewed when it expires next year, and that it is yet to yield any huge successes outside of the explosive Harry & Meghan docu-series.

“I don’t think mainstream Hollywood ever took them seriously. From day one Archewell felt to most industry onlookers more like a brand-building exercise than a genuine production operation,” an insider, reportedly a senior producer, told the site.

“Netflix were handing out vanity deals like candy at the time and so everybody just shrugged their shoulders and assumed their company wouldn’t get much done despite the generous backing.

“But even Harry and Meghan naysayers would have been shocked at how little they’ve actually achieved.”

Both the duke and duchess have separate new TV projects in the works currently, with the teaser for Harry’s new documentary, POLO, released earlier this month. The series will follow elite global players of the sport, which Harry has also been involved with for many years.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s lifestyle and cooking show reportedly went into production earlier this year, although its premiere date is yet to be confirmed.

It’s understood to be tied in with the release of her new homewares brand, American Riviera Orchard, which was soft-launched in March.

  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have ‘easier’ parenting lifestyle than Princess Kate and Prince William

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have ‘easier’ parenting lifestyle than Princess Kate and Prince William

A royal expert has said that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have different parenting styles to Prince William and Princess Kate.

The couple have two children, Archie Harrison, who arrived in 2019 and was later joined by a daughter, Lilibet Diana, in 2021.

Prince Harry is set to turn 40 this weekend, celebrating with family and friends before spending some time away with a group of close pals, according to reports.

Now, former BBC correspondent Jennie Bond has speculated about his approach to parenting in California.

Jennie told OK!: “Harry has always been quite sporty, and very competitive…I bet he gets the kids involved in all sorts of games and makes it incredibly fun, as well as teaching them skills like surfing or football.

“The warm weather and outdoor lifestyle in Montecito must make bringing up children a joy, so much easier to get them away from screens and TV, which Harry and Meghan clearly both feel very strongly about.

“I think he is relishing his role as a parent and playing the fullest part he can in the lives of his two tots….He’s lucky enough to be able to share most of their lives so I’m sure Harry is a devoted dad and no stranger to nappy changing or school runs.

“I think he finds the security and anchor in his little family that was sadly missing in his own broken childhood home.”

Jennie also speculated on the emotional turmoil brought about by Prince Harry’s parents’ messy separation and their very public take-downs of one another.

She said: “It’s hard to know exactly when the damage wrought by his parents’ broken marriage began to make its mark on Harry.

“He was only eight when Charles and Diana officially separated, but he had witnessed the marital difficulties long before that.

“I’m sure the insecurity of his own childhood has made him all the more determined to give his kids the perfect upbringing and to have them wrapped in a bubble of love and awareness of the love between their parents.”

Jennie also shared hope for the future for a potential reunion of Archie and Lilibet with their cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

She said: “Imagine Archie, aged 15, telling his friends, ‘My grandpa is/was King! And my uncle is/will be King too.’ But he hardly knew or met them. How sad… and Meghan would have to bear the brunt of the responsibility for that.I’m sure that, like Harry, she wants the very best for their children… and that will include an understanding of their background.

“I just hope that by the time Archie and Lili grow up, things will be calmer and the family more united, even if they continue to live thousands of miles apart.

“This is not the children’s fault or responsibility so let’s hope the adults can make it a better world for the next generation of royals.”

  • Harry Redknapp returns to Wales to find Britain’s worst performing football team

Harry Redknapp is set to return to Wales to kick off the search to find a grassroots football team in need of serious help.

Harry and a host of top tier talent have joined forces with Specsavers will mentor one struggling grassroots football team through the season of a lifetime, with elite training and money-can’t-buy experiences.

The community opticians and audiologists is giving one local club a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become Specsavers’ Best Worst Team and turn its fortunes around with face-to-face training from Harry as well as money-can’t-buy experiences usually reserved for elite clubs only.

    Comeback

Last season, Harry helped Cwm Albion overcome three years of consecutive defeats and a staggering -191 goal difference. Netting 50 goals and 7 wins, the Swansea Senior League Division 4 side made one of the biggest comebacks in grassroots history, leaving the title of the next Best Worst Team up for grabs.

With training and mentorship from some of the most famous faces in the world of sport, Specsavers will give the UK’s biggest underdogs a season to remember.

The winning team can expect to receive incredible money-can’t-buy experiences to celebrate their successes, raise their game and give their bruised egos a well-earned boost.

Speaking about his return to the dugout, Harry said: “I’m over the moon to be teaming up with Specsavers again. If the terrific season with the lads at Cwm Albion is anything to go by, it’ll be a good laugh.

“I was bowled over by the grit, determination and spirit of last season’s Best Worst Team, so I can’t wait to meet the team that’s got what it takes to be this season’s worst. I’ve got some fantastic surprises up my sleeve, so let’s see who’s up for it!”

Lisa Hale, Head of Consumer PR, Social & Brand Activation, says: “Should’ve gone to Specsavers has become part of our culture and for decades we’ve really celebrated those human moments when our eyesight and hearing let us down now and again.

“Grassroots football is filled with human moments – whether it’s a questionable on-field decision or a missed open goal, so are very proud to be investing in this underfunded area of culture once again.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Harry again this season to find our next ‘Best Worst Team’, so I would encourage all local clubs across the country to apply for the chance to win the title, and all the fame and glory that comes with it.”

Once Specsavers’ Best Worst Team has been selected, the healthcare retailer will be following and documenting the club’s journey throughout the 2024/25 footballing season.
