The Sundance Film Festival goes online this week. Here’s how to watch the films

PARK CITY, Utah — Access to the Sundance Film Festival doesn’t require a trip to Park City, Utah, anymore — just an internet connection. Over half of the films that premiered this past week will be available to steam on the festival’s online platform starting Thursday.

What started as a COVID-era necessity has become one of the festival’s most beloved components, even for those who do brave the cold and the lines to see films in person.

“I think it’s really great to be able to offer that opportunity to our audiences, but also to our artists. Sundance is a festival of discovery and each of the films coming to the festival is seeking that moment with audiences,” said festival director Eugene Hernandez. “How cool is it that even for that short window of time, just a few days, folks from anywhere in the country can log on in their living room with family and friends, get together and watch a few of the films?”

The Sundance Film Festival website has information on the technical requirements, but there are ways to watch on your computer and television. After you click the “Watch Now” button, you have five hours to complete the feature film.

Anyone in the U.S. can access the online portal. Rights restrictions make the films and shows unavailable to stream internationally.

All of the feature films playing in the main competitions are included on the platform and a few extras, many of which do not yet have theatrical distribution plans. That includes the Dylan O’Brien breakout “Twinless,” the Marlee Matlin, Sally Ride and Selena Quintanilla documentaries, and Ukrainian documentaries “2000 Meters to Andriivka” and “Mr. Nobody Against Putin.”

Other highlights include “Love, Brooklyn”; “Ricky”; the Barry Jenkins produced “Sorry, Baby” made by triple threat Eva Victor; the politically relevant “Heightened Scrutiny” which looks at how the media is responsible for shaping narratives around transgender issues; and “The Perfect Neighbor,” which uses police bodycam footage to reconstruct a deadly neighborhood incident in Florida.

Some films already have distributors and won’t be streaming on the platform. A24 will release both the Ayo Edebiri film “Opus” and the Rose Byrne psychological thriller “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” in theaters this year. Same with Focus Features’ Carey Mulligan charmer “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” which will be in theaters in March. And in general, movies that played in the premieres section will not be available online, whether or not they have distribution plans yet. That includes Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman” remake.

Between Jan. 30 through Feb. 2.

It’s $35 for a single film and up to $800 for unlimited. Proceeds benefit the Sundance Institute’s artist programs and funds.

Can Eating Chia Seeds Every Morning Help With Fat Loss? Heres The Truth

Chia seeds have emerged as a superfood in recent times. Known for being rich in essential vitamins and minerals, they have become a popular choice for those trying to eat healthy. If you’re also one of them, you must have read, watched videos, or been advised to incorporate them into your diet. Some even say that chia seeds can aid in fat loss. But is this really true? Can these tiny black seeds help you fulfil your fat loss goals? Recently, fitness coach Ralston D’Souza took to his Instagram to reveal the truth about chia seeds and fat loss, and the answer might surprise you. But before that, let’s understand if fat loss is the same as weight loss.

Is Fat Loss And Weight Loss The Same Thing?

Many people use these terms interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings. Fat loss refers to a decrease in body fat alone, whereas weight loss is a decrease in overall body weight. The former is a more specific goal, while the latter is more general. The most suitable option for you would depend on your personal health goals.

Chia Seeds For Fat Loss: Do They Really Work? Here’s What The Fitness Coach Revealed

According to Ralston, if you only add chia seeds to your diet without making any other changes, you might actually gain fat. He explains, “Chia seeds are very nutritious and packed with fibre, which helps you feel full and manage hunger. But they’re also calorie-dense.” He states that a 100-gm serving of chia seeds can contain up to 500 calories. So, while chia seeds are healthy, you need to be mindful of how much you’re consuming. Ralston further adds, “Eating fewer calories is necessary for fat loss, so don’t simply add chia seeds to everything whenever you feel hungry – it just won’t work.” In order to see the desired change, you must alter your diet as a whole and not rely on a single food item.

    Watch the complete video here:

  • DeepSeek has rattled the AI industry. Here’s a quick look at other Chinese AI models

DeepSeek has rattled the AI industry. Here’s a quick look at other Chinese AI models

HONG KONG — The Chinese artificial intelligence firm DeepSeek has rattled markets with claims that its latest AI model, R1, performs on a par with those of OpenAI, despite using less advanced computer chips and consuming less energy.

DeepSeek’s emergence has raised concerns that China may have overtaken the U.S. in the artificial intelligence race despite restrictions on its access to the most advanced chips. It’s just one of many Chinese companies working on AI, with a goal of making China the world leader in the field by 2030 and besting the U.S. in their battle for technological supremacy.

Like the U.S., China is investing billions into artificial intelligence. Last week, it created a 60 billion yuan ($8.2 billion) AI investment fund, days after the U.S. imposed fresh chip export restrictions.

Beijing has also invested heavily in the semiconductor industry to build its capacity to make advanced computer chips, working to overcome limits on its access to those of industry leaders. Companies are offering talent programs and subsidies, and there are plans to open AI academies and introduce AI education into primary and secondary school curriculums.

China has established regulations governing AI, addressing safety, privacy and ethics. Its ruling Communist Party also controls the kinds of topics the AI models can tackle: DeepSeek shapes its responses to fit those limits.

Here’s an overview of some other leading AI models in China.

Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen-2.5-1M is the e-commerce giant’s open-source AI series. It contains large language models that can easily handle extremely long questions, and engage in longer and deeper conversations. Its ability to understand complex tasks such as reasoning, dialogues and comprehending code is improving.

Like its rivals, Alibaba Cloud has a chatbot released for public use called Qwen – also known as Tongyi Qianwen in China. Alibaba Cloud’s suite of AI models, such as the Qwen2.5 series, has mostly been deployed for developers and business customers such as automakers, banks, video game makers and retailers as part of product development and shaping customer experiences.

Ernie Bot, developed by Baidu, China’s dominant search engine, was the first AI chatbot made publicly available in China. Baidu said it released the model publicly to be able to collect massive real-world human feedback to build its capacity.

Ernie Bot 4.0 had more than 300 million users as of June 2024. Similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, users of Ernie Bot are able to ask it questions and have it generate images based on text prompts.

Doubao 1.5 Pro is an AI model released by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance last week. Doubao is currently one of the most popular AI chatbots in China, with 60 million monthly active users.

ByteDance says the Doubao 1.5 Pro is better than ChatGPT-4o at retaining knowledge, coding, reasoning, and Chinese language processing. According to ByteDance, the model is also cost-efficient and requires lower hardware costs compared to other large language models because Doubao uses a highly-optimized architecture that balances performance with reduced computational demands.

Moonshot AI is a Beijing-based startup valued at over $3 billion after its latest fundraising round. It says its recently released Kimi k1.5 matches or outperforms the OpenAI o1 model, which is designed to spend more time thinking before it responds and can solve harder and more complex problems. Moonshot claims that Kimi outperforms OpenAI o1 in mathematics, coding, and ability to comprehend both text and visual inputs such as photos and video.

  • Washing Greasy Pans With Hot Water? Heres Why Its Not A Good Idea

Washing Greasy Pans With Hot Water? Heres Why Its Not A Good Idea

So, you have cooked your favourite meal and now face the task of cleaning a greasy pan. Many of us instinctively reach for hot water, thinking it will quickly dissolve the grease and eliminate lingering odours. However, while hot water may seem like the ideal solution, it can actually damage your cookware and cause issues you might not expect. Hot water does not work the same way on all kitchen utensils, and it is especially problematic when dealing with greasy residue. Want to know why using hot water is not the best choice? Let’s find out!

    Photo: iStock

Why You Should Never Use Hot Water On Greasy Pans

Using hot water to clean your greasy pans might seem effective in melting the grime, but it can cause major issues for your plumbing. When you wash a greasy pan with hot water, the dirty water travels down the pipes. Once it cools, the grease solidifies and clings to the inside of the pipes, leading to a gradual buildup. Over time, this can result in blockages and potentially costly plumbing repairs.

Additionally, the drastic change in temperature can cause thermal shock, particularly if you are cleaning non-stick or cast-iron pans. Washing these types of pans right after cooking can weaken the surface coating, causing the pan to lose its non-stick properties and even crack.

Here Are 5 Easy Tips To Make Your Pans Last Longer:

To keep your pans, especially non-stick ones, in good condition for longer, follow these helpful tips. Kitchen utensils experience a lot of wear and tear, yet they often get the least attention when it comes to proper care. Here is what you should do:

    1. Clean With Gentle Soap

When cleaning your pans, use a mild dishwashing soap or liquid. These will help remove stubborn stains without damaging the coatings. Avoid harsh chemicals that could crack the surface over time.

    2. Choose The Right Cleaning Tools

Rather than using abrasive steel wool, opt for soft silicone scrubbers. Rough pads can scratch the surface, damaging the protective layers and making your pans less effective.

    3. Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

As mentioned earlier, sudden temperature changes can damage your pans quickly. Always let your pans cool down naturally before washing them. For stubborn stains, use lukewarm water instead of hot water.

    4. Season Pans Regularly

For cast-iron pans, seasoning is essential. After cleaning, apply a thin layer of oil and heat the pan gently to prevent rusting.

    5. Store Properly

To avoid scratches, refrain from stacking your pans directly on top of each other. If storage space is tight, place a soft cloth or liner between the pans.

  • NATO is deploying eyes in the sky and on the Baltic Sea to protect vital cables. Here’s why and how

NATO is deploying eyes in the sky and on the Baltic Sea to protect vital cables. Here’s why and how

ABOARD A FRENCH NAVY FLIGHT OVER THE BALTIC SEA — With its powerful camera, the French Navy surveillance plane scouring the Baltic Sea zoomed in on a cargo ship plowing the waters below — closer, closer and closer still until the camera operator could make out details on the vessel’s front deck and smoke pouring from its chimney.

The long-range Atlantique 2 aircraft on a new mission for NATO then shifted its high-tech gaze onto another target, and another after that until, after more than five hours on patrol, the plane’s array of sensors had scoped out the bulk of the Baltic — from Germany in the west to Estonia in the northeast, bordering Russia.

The flight’s mere presence in the skies above the strategic sea last week, combined with military ships patrolling on the waters, also sent an unmistakable message: The NATO alliance is ratcheting up its guard against suspected attempts to sabotage underwater energy and data cables and pipelines that crisscross the Baltic, prompted by a growing catalogue of incidents that have damaged them.

“We will do everything in our power to make sure that we fight back, that we are able to see what is happening and then take the next steps to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. And our adversaries should know this,” NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said this month in announcing a new alliance mission, dubbed “Baltic Sentry,” to protect the underwater infrastructure vital to the economic well-being of Baltic-region nations.

Power and communications cables and gas pipelines stitch together the nine countries with shores on the Baltic, a relatively shallow and nearly landlocked sea. A few examples are the 152-kilometer (94-mile) Balticconnector pipeline that carries gas between Finland and Estonia, the high-voltage Baltic Cable connecting the power grids of Sweden and Germany, and the 1,173-kilometer (729-mile) C-Lion1 telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany.

Undersea pipes and cables help power economies, keep houses warm and connect billions of people. More than 1.3 million kilometers (807,800 miles) of fiber optic cables — more than enough to stretch to the moon and back — span the world’s oceans and seas, according to TeleGeography, which tracks and maps the vital communication networks. The cables are typically the width of a garden hose. But 97% of the world’s communications, including trillions of dollars of financial transactions, pass through them each day.

“In the last two months alone, we have seen damage to a cable connecting Lithuania and Sweden, another connecting Germany and Finland, and most recently, a number of cables linking Estonia and Finland. Investigations of all of these cases are still ongoing. But there is reason for grave concern,” Rutte said on Jan. 14.

At least 11 Baltic cables have been damaged since October 2023 — the most recent being a fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and the Swedish island of Gotland, reported to have ruptured on Sunday. Although cable operators note that subsea cable damage is commonplace, the frequency and concentration of incidents in the Baltic heightened suspicions that damage might have been deliberate.

There also are fears that Russia could target cables as part of a wider campaign of so-called “hybrid warfare” to destabilize European nations helping Ukraine defend itself against the full-scale invasion that Moscow has been pursuing since 2022.

Without specifically blaming Russia, Rutte said: “Hybrid means sabotage. Hybrid means cyber-attacks. Hybrid means sometimes even assassination attacks, attempts, and in this case, it means hitting on our critical undersea infrastructure.”

Finnish police suspect that the Eagle S, an oil tanker that damaged the Estlink 2 power cable and two other communications cables linking Finland and Estonia on Dec. 25th, is part of Moscow’s “shadow fleet” used to avoid war-related sanctions on Russian oil exports.

Finnish authorities seized the tanker shortly after it left a Russian port and apparently cut the cables by dragging its anchor. Finnish investigators allege the ship left an almost 100-kilometer (62-mile) long anchor trail on the seabed.

Several Western intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of their work, told The Associated Press that recent damage was most likely accidental, seemingly caused by anchors being dragged by ships that were poorly maintained and poorly crewed.

One senior intelligence official told AP that ships’ logs and mechanical failures with ships’ anchors were among “multiple indications” pointing away from Russian sabotage. The official said Russian cables were also severed. Another Western official, also speaking anonymously to discuss intelligence matters, said Russia sent an intelligence-gathering vessel to the site of one cable rupture to investigate the damage.

The Washington Post first reported on the emerging consensus among U.S. and European security services that maritime accidents likely caused recent damage.

The European Subsea Cables Association, representing cable owners and operators, noted in November after faults were reported on two Baltic links that, on average, a subsea cable is damaged somewhere in the world every three days. In northern European waters, the main causes of damage are commercial fishing or ship anchors, it said.

In the fiber-optic cable rupture on Sunday connecting Latvia and Sweden, Swedish authorities detained a Maltese-flagged ship bound for South America with a cargo of fertilizer.

Navibulgar, a Bulgarian company that owns the Vezhen, said any damage was unintentional and that the ship’s crew discovered while navigating in extremely bad weather that its left anchor appeared to have dragged on the seabed.

The alliance is deploying warships, maritime patrol aircraft and naval drones for the mission to provide “enhanced surveillance and deterrence.”

Aboard the French Navy surveillance flight, the 14-member crew cross-checked ships they spotted from the air against lists of vessels they had been ordered to watch for.

“If we witness some suspicious activities from ships as sea – for example, ships at very low speed or at anchorage in a position that they shouldn’t be at this time – so this is something we can see,” said the flight commander, Lt. Alban, whose surname was withheld by the French military for security reasons.

“We can have a very close look with our sensors to see what is happening.”

How Much Water Should Pregnant Women Drink? Heres What Expert Says

Proper hydration is crucial for everyone, but it becomes even more important during pregnancy. Water plays a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of both the mother and the developing baby. From supporting increased blood volume to aiding in digestion and nutrient absorption, staying adequately hydrated is key to a healthy pregnancy. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the importance of hydration and tips for pregnant women to ensure they’re getting enough fluids.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

    Why Hydration Matters During Pregnancy

    • Supports Increased Blood Volume: During pregnancy, a woman’s blood volume increases by about 50%. Water is essential for producing this additional blood, which helps supply oxygen and nutrients to the baby.

    • Aids in Digestion and Nutrient Absorption: Proper hydration helps maintain a healthy digestive system, preventing common pregnancy issues like constipation and hemorrhoids. It also aids in the absorption of essential nutrients from food.

    • Prevents Dehydration: Dehydration can lead to serious complications such as urinary tract infections, premature labor, and low amniotic fluid levels. Ensuring adequate fluid intake helps prevent these risks.

    • Regulates Body Temperature: Pregnant women may feel warmer than usual due to hormonal changes. Staying hydrated helps regulate body temperature and prevents overheating.

    • Reduces Swelling: While some swelling is normal during pregnancy, proper hydration can help minimize excessive swelling (edema) in the hands, feet, and ankles.

The general recommendation is for pregnant women to drink at least 8-12 cups (64-96 ounces) of water per day. However, individual needs may vary based on factors such as activity level, climate, and overall health. Thirst is a good indicator that your body needs more fluids. Drink water whenever you feel thirsty and pay attention to signs of dehydration, such as dark yellow urine, dry mouth, or dizziness.

    Tips for Staying Hydrated

    • Carry a Water Bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times. This makes it easy to sip water throughout the day, whether you’re at work, running errands, or relaxing at home.

    • Infuse Your Water: If plain water feels monotonous, add a splash of flavor by infusing it with fresh fruits, herbs, or a slice of lemon or cucumber. This can make drinking water more enjoyable.

    • Set Reminders: Use phone alarms or apps to remind you to drink water regularly. This can be particularly helpful if you’re busy and tend to forget to hydrate.

    • Eat Hydrating Foods: Include foods with high water content in your diet, such as fruits (watermelon, oranges, strawberries) and vegetables (cucumbers, lettuce, celery).

    • Monitor Fluid Intake: Keep track of your daily water consumption. This can help ensure you’re meeting your hydration goals and allow you to make adjustments as needed.

    • Stay Hydrated During Exercise: If you’re exercising during pregnancy, it’s crucial to drink extra water to compensate for the fluids lost through sweat.

    Not Just Water

    • Herbal Teas: Non-caffeinated herbal teas can be a soothing and hydrating alternative to water. However, consult your healthcare provider before trying new teas, as some herbs may not be safe during pregnancy.

    • Milk and Juice: Low-fat milk and 100% fruit juices can contribute to your daily fluid intake. Be mindful of added sugars in juices and opt for freshly squeezed or diluted versions when possible.

    • Soups and Broths: Including soups and broths in your diet can provide additional fluids, especially if you’re struggling to drink enough water.

Signs of Dehydration and When to Seek Help

If your urine is dark yellow or your mouth is dry, drink water. If you feel lightheaded, dizzy, or very fatigued, you may be dehydrated. Decreased urine output is a sure sign of dehydration. However, if you experience severe dehydration symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat, confusion, fainting, or persistent vomiting, seek medical attention immediately.

Staying properly hydrated is a simple yet powerful way to support a healthy pregnancy. By following these guidelines and listening to your body’s needs, you can ensure that both you and your baby stay well-hydrated and healthy throughout this special time.

  • Lil Gamby Has Opened Its Flagship Outlet In Lower Parel: Heres What We Tried There

Lil Gamby Has Opened Its Flagship Outlet In Lower Parel: Heres What We Tried There

Lower Parel has a cool new destination for food lovers: Lil Gamby. While the name may be familiar, the space of this flagship outlet is a complete novelty: the brand has transformed its original cloud kitchen into an expansive dine-in hotspot with a bar. Lil Gamby was founded by Shaan Gidwani under Acapella Hospitality in 2021 and opened its first physical store in Khar in 2023. Outposts in Bandra and Chembur soon followed as the brand amassed a loyal following. We recently had the chance to visit Lil Gamby’s Lower Parel location, taste some of its signature dishes and enjoy its one-of-a-kind ambience.

The brand is known for its street culture influence – it draws inspiration from the eclectic cultures of Miami’s Wynwood district, East London’s Shoreditch, and Brooklyn in New York. In the Lower Parel outlet, this vibe is reflected in the overall decor and the graffiti and street-style art that covers most of the walls. The sheer amount of open space stands out here – the seating is far from congested, the ceilings are high and there’s a mezzanine floor. Lil Gamby plans to capitalise on all this and host live sports screenings, a game zone, and musical performances, we’re told.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Lil Gamby’s menu does not stick to classic Italian ingredients and combinations. Its offerings go beyond the classics to include nods to Asian and other international flavours too. For example, we started our meal with the signature Korean Chicken Wings, which hit the spot just right – in terms of crispiness and spiciness. This was followed by a chicken delight with a desi twist: Kerala Fried Chicken Sliders. The hearty patties were beautifully packed with flavour and we immediately wanted seconds. Among the vegetarian appetisers, the Hot Honey and Jalapenos Cheese Poppers won us over. Apart from such starters, one can also enjoy BBQ platters and customisable fries (with multiple choices for type, flavouring, meat and veggie toppings)

The Lower Parel outlet has an exclusive range of smash burgers, made with in-house bread. Since we wanted to prioritise the pizzas, we didn’t taste them this time. But they nevertheless sounded quite tempting. We instead moved to the pasta section and feasted on Plata Verde. The spaghetti was generously coated with a yummy roasted garlic and basil pesto, and mixed with slow-cooked mushroom and parmesan cheese. It was a wonderful example of comfort food – perfect to unwind with after a long day’s (or week’s) work.

Finally, it was time to taste the pizza. Lil Gamby is known for its Neapolitan-style sourdough bases, which undergo a 48-hour fermentation process, we’re told. The pizzas are available in 8-inch and 11-inch sizes, and the array of options is noteworthy. From classics to experimental, from simple and straightforward to loaded and decadent – it seems there’s something for every mood. The struggle to select was real but the availability of such variety was laudable. Many of the pizzas feature the classic and beloved San Marzano Tomato Sauce, but there are some with other signature sauces as well.

Among the vegetarian pizzas, the cheekily named Ghas Pus was a delicious treat. The tanginess of the San Marzano sauce, the dual delight of mozzarella and scamorza cheese and the toppings of mushroom, zucchini, bell peppers and sun-dried tomatoes made it a satisfying choice. Among the non-vegetarian ones, we liked the Nucleaaa. It was a fiery and flavourful combination of Thai-inspired Chilli Basil Chicken, bell peppers, roasted onions and garlic. Again, both mozzarella and scamorza cheese were added to the pizza.

One can pair these dishes with different types of alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverages. Unlike the other outlets, Lil Gamby Lower Parel boasts a bar and its menu matches the overall casual vibe of the restaurant. There are 16 types of beer on tap, featuring exclusive collaborations with breweries like Drifters and Rolling Mills. Guests can sample unique brews through taster flights, beer towers, or full pints. They can be paired with Lil Gamby’s indulgent smash burgers. The drinks lineup also includes several cool cocktails, house-made iced teas, loaded shakes and fuss-free mocktails that cater to a wide range of preferences.

We ended our meal with Tira-Miss-Me – Lil Gamby’s take on tiramisu – which was simple yet amazing. The bitterness of the espresso oozing from the soaked savoiardi, the boozy hit from the rum and the smoothness of the mascarpone sent us to dessert heaven. It’s a sweet delight worth returning for.

Whether for a casual outing or a lively night with friends, Lil Gamby’s flagship outlet is worth checking out the next time you’re in Lower Parel. Moreover, the kitchen extends its delivery hours until 5 am, so those around the area can also satisfy their post-midnight cravings by ordering from here.

  • TikTok refugees are pouring to Xiaohongshu. Here’s what you need to know about the RedNote app

TikTok refugees are pouring to Xiaohongshu. Here’s what you need to know about the RedNote app

WASHINGTON — As the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance, U.S. TikTok users are flocking to the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu, also called RedNote – making it the top downloaded app in the U.S.

Some of the “TikTok refugees,” as they call themselves, say the TikTok alternative, a Chinese app, is being chosen in protest of the TikTok ban. Here’s what you need to know about Xiaohongshu.

It is a lifestyle social media app which allows users to post short videos, photos and texts, and it also includes functions like live-streaming and shopping.

A rare wave of U.S.-China camaraderie broke out online in recent days as “refugees” from the popular short video platform TikTok poured onto a Chinese social media platform to protest a likely ban on the service.

They were met with surprise, curiosity and in-jokes on Xiaohongshu — literally, “Little Red Book” — whose users saw English-language posts take over feeds almost overnight.

Americans introduced themselves with hashtag TikTok refugees, ask me anything attitude and posting photos of their pets to pay their hosts’ “cat tax.” Parents swapped stories about raising kids and Swifties from both countries, of course, quickly found each other.

It’s a rare moment of direct contact between two online worlds that are usually kept apart by language, corporate boundaries, and China’s strict system of online censorship that blocks access to nearly all international media and social media services.

Chinese and American users rarely find themselves in the same online spaces, in large part because China’s “Great Firewall” blocks internationally popular platforms like Instagram and X. Even TikTok blocks users in China, directing them to its onshore sister platform Douyin.

But as the deadline approached for a law that would ban TikTok in the United States beginning Jan. 19 unless the popular social media program is sold by its China-based parent company, some began migrating to Xiaohongshu.

“When they tell us you can’t have a Chinese app anymore, we go straight to another Chinese app,” said Katie Lawson, a farmer in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has posted videos of her chickens and saved many recipes from the app. “We’re going to go explore that country and their values ourselves. We’re going to go straight to the source.”

Although TikTok is owned by a Chinese parent company, the short video platform popular with Generation Z is an international app whose content and users are walled off from those of the Chinese version, Douyin.

Xiaohongshu’s 300 million monthly active users are overwhelmingly Chinese – so much so that parts of its interface have no English-language version. They skew heavily female, often addressing strangers simply as “sister.”

Known for a friendly atmosphere that focuses on user reviews and peer-to-peer advice, it’s one of China’s fastest-growing apps. Foreign celebrities – including Mariah Carey and Elon Musk’s mother Maye Musk — are longtime users. Kim Kardashian joined the app back in 2018.

The company hasn’t released official data, but the app has reached No. 1 in free downloads on both iOS and Android, remaining in that spot for days.

On the platform, two versions of the TikTok refugee hashtag have over 24 million posts, with related posts appearing at the top of many users’ feeds.

A large number of American users say they’ve received a warm welcome from the community, with #TikTokrefugee. “Welcome the global villagers” remains the top one trending topic on Xiaohongshu, with 8.9 million views on Thursday.

Users from both countries are comparing notes on grocery prices, rent, health insurance, medical bills and the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Parents talk about what the kids learn in school in two countries. Some have already joined book clubs and are building up a community.

When’s the Best Time to Eat Rice?

Short answer: anytime you feel like it – as long as you’re not stressing about it.

    Why?

According to hormone coach Poornima Peri, setting rigid rules about when to eat creates unnecessary stress. And that stress can mess with your body far more than the actual food.

What Happens When You Stress About Food Timing?

Stress impacts your body in ways you might not even realise. Here’s how it can derail your health:

    1. Cortisol Levels Spike

Overthinking what or when to eat increases cortisol, the stress hormone. High cortisol can lead to fat storage, sugar cravings, and a weakened immune system over time.

    2. Insulin Efficiency Drops

When you’re stressed, insulin – the hormone that regulates blood sugar – becomes less effective. This can keep your blood sugar levels elevated, raising the risk of other health problems.

    3. Digestion Takes a Hit

Stress diverts energy away from digestion, causing bloating, indigestion, and long-term gut issues. Poor digestion also means your body struggles to absorb nutrients from food.

    4. Sleep Suffers

Worrying about food timings can disrupt your body’s natural rhythms, making it tough to fall asleep or stay asleep. Poor sleep weakens your immunity and encourages unhealthy eating habits.

    5. Hormones Go Haywire

Chronic stress can affect hormones like oestrogen and progesterone, leading to irregular periods, mood swings, and other imbalances.

    How to Make Rice Weight-Loss-Friendly

Many people avoid rice because of its starch content, but dietitian Sheenam K Malhotra says you don’t need to give it up completely. Instead, try these tips to make rice a part of your weight-loss plan:

    1. Control Portions

Stick to one cup of cooked rice per day. It’s the easiest way to enjoy rice without overdoing it.

    2. Choose the Right Cooking Method

Boil or steam your rice instead of frying it. For bonus points, strain the starch by cooking rice in plenty of water and draining the excess.

    3. Balance Your Plate

Pair your rice with equal portions of veggies and dal. A balanced meal is not only nutritious but also keeps you full longer.

    4. Add Fibre and Protein

Mix your rice with high-fibre vegetables or lean protein. This combo keeps you satisfied and helps you avoid mindless snacking later.

Tips To Create A Calorie Deficit In Your Body

Now that you know what actually works, let’s learn how you can make a calorie deficit in your body. With these mindful tips, you will shed those extra kilos effectively.

    1. Cut Portion Size

If you want to lose weight, get used to eating smaller portions of meals than you have been eating. Cut your portion size as per your body weight, also make sure to eat three meals a day. Portion control does not mean skipping meals.

It is extremely important to drink enough water throughout your weight loss journey. This speeds up your metabolism and also curbs hunger pangs. Keep sipping on water throughout the day and drink a full glass before your meals.
