    One Tech Tip: Here’s what you need to do before and after your phone is stolen or lost

    LONDON — Phones hold so much of our digital lives — emails, social media and bank accounts, photos, chat messages and more — that if they ever get stolen or go missing, it can cause major disruption beyond just the loss of a device.

    In some places, phone thefts have surged so much it’s now an everyday problem, with thieves on electric bikes snatching them out of pedestrians’ hands, swiping them off restaurant tables or pickpocketing them on the subway.

    In Britain, where 200 phones are stolen every day in “snatch thefts,” the government has pledged to crack down on the crime and is meeting with tech companies and device makers to come up with solutions.

    Here are steps you can take before and after your phone goes missing:

    There are things you can do to make it less painful if your phone is stolen. Because some of these features are more technical in nature, people often overlook them.

    Lock down as much as you can. At a minimum, require a password or biometric scan to unlock the device. You can also add similar requirements to important individual apps — like your banking account, WhatsApp or Signal — to protect your finance or chats from thieves.

    Also, activate the find my device feature, which is available for both iOS and Android. Samsung also offers its own service called SmartThings Find.

    You’ll probably have lots of precious photos saved on your camera roll. It’s a good idea to back them up, along with contacts, calendar items and other files. Google and Apple offer cloud-based backup services, although the free versions have limited storage space. You can also back up your files to an external hard drive, memory card or a laptop.

    Some police forces and phone companies advise turning off message previews, which prevents thieves trying to break into your accounts from seeing reset or login codes when the phone is locked. To do this on an iPhone, for example, go to the notifications section of your settings menu, and tap Show Previews.

    Recent iOS and Android updates include a number of new functions designed to make thefts less attractive.

    IPhone users can turn on Stolen Device Protection, which makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to access key functions and settings. Many thieves will want to wipe the data off and reset so they can resell it, but with this feature on, they’ll need a face or fingerprint scan to do so. Apple also recently updated its “ activation lock ” feature to make it harder for thieves to sell parts from stolen phones.

    Android phones, meanwhile, can now use use artificial intelligence to detect motion indicating someone snatched it out of your hand and is racing away on foot or a bike, and then lock the screen immediately. And there’s a feature called Private Spaces that lets you hide sensitive files on your phone.

    Take note of your phone’s serial number, also known as an IMEI number. It can link you to the phone if it does eventually get recovered. Call it up by typing (asterisk)#06# on your phone’s keypad. If you’ve already lost your phone you can also find it in other places like the box it came in.

    If you’re unlucky enough to have your phone stolen, notify police. Call your insurance company if you have a policy that covers the device. Inform your phone company so they can freeze your number and issue a replacement sim card or esim. Notify your bank so they can watch out for suspicious transactions.

    Try to locate your phone with the find my device feature. For iPhones, go to iCloud.com/find from a web browser while Android users should head to www.google.com/android/find. Samsung also has its own service for Galaxy phones.

    These services will show your phone’s current or last known location on a map, which is also handy if you’ve just lost track of it somewhere in the house. Apple says even if a phone can’t connect to the internet or has been turned off, it can use Bluetooth to ping any nearby Apple devices using the same network behind its AirTags tracking devices. Google says newer Pixel phones can be located “for several hours” after they’ve been turned off using similar technology.

    You can get the phone to play a sound, even if it’s on silent. You can also put the phone in lost mode, which locks it and will display a message and contact details on the screen for anyone who finds it. Lost mode on iOS also suspends any Apple Pay cards and passes.

    If the device shows up in an unfamiliar location on the map, and you suspect it has been stolen, experts say it’s better to notify police rather than trying to get it back yourself.

    Cybersecurity company Norton says, “Confronting a thief yourself is not recommended.”

    If you can’t find your phone, there are some final steps to take.

    Log yourself out of all your accounts that might be accessible on the phone, and then remove it from your list of trusted devices that you use to get multifactor authentication codes — but make sure you can get those codes somewhere else, such as email.

    Then, as a last resort, you can erase the phone remotely so that there’s no chance of any data falling into the wrong hands. However, take note: Apple says that if the iPhone is offline, the remote erase will only happen the next time it come back online. But if you find the phone before it gets erased, you can cancel the request.

    Google warns that SD memory cards plugged into Android phones might not be remotely erased. And after the phone has been wiped, it won’t show up on the Find My Device feature.

    Here’s what has made Hurricane Milton so fierce and unusual

    With its mighty strength and its dangerous path, Hurricane Milton powered into a very rare threat flirting with experts’ worst fears.

    Warm water fueled amazingly rapid intensification that took Milton from a minimal hurricane to a massive Category 5 in less than 10 hours. It weakened, but quickly bounced back, and when its winds briefly reached 180 mph, its barometric pressure, a key measurement for a storm’s overall strength, was among the lowest recorded in the Gulf of Mexico this late in the year.

    At its most fierce, Milton almost maxed out its potential intensity given the weather factors surrounding it.

    “Everything that you would want if you’re looking for a storm to go absolutely berserk is what Milton had,” Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach said.

    That’s not all. Milton’s eastward path through the Gulf is so infrequent the most recent comparable storm was in 1848. Tampa — the most populous metro area in its general path — hasn’t had a direct hit from a major storm in more than 100 years, making this week the worst-case scenario for many experts.

    The track “is not unprecedented but it’s quite rare,” said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy. “And of those that did that track, this is by far the most intense.”

    “It is unusual in a number of ways,” Princeton University climate scientist and hurricane expert Gabriel Vecchi said. “This storm is probably going to be very unlike any storm anyone has experienced on the west coast of Florida.”

    But it might be getting less rare, and the U.S. is already on a particularly unlucky streak. When Helene plowed through Florida less than two weeks ago, it was the seventh Category 4 or stronger storm to make landfall in the continental U.S. in eight years. That’s more than triple the average annual rate of such monster landfalls in the U.S. since 1950, according to a data analysis by The Associated Press.

    If Milton somehow hits as a Category 4 storm at landfall it will be only the second time the nation was struck twice in a year by hurricanes so powerful. This is after an unusual 12-year period when no Category 4 or higher storms hit the mainland between 2005 and 2016.

    University of Albany atmospheric scientist and hurricane expert Kristen Corbosiero said Milton’s threat now, compared to that 12-year quiet period, is probably a combination of luck — that those previous big storms didn’t make landfall — and climate change that is steering big storms differently than before.

    “With more and stronger storms, the chances of a major hurricane hitting the U.S. increase,” she said.

    So much of what makes Milton nasty is rooted in the warmer water of its birth and in human-caused climate change, Vecchi, Corbosiero and others said.

    Milton formed in the Bay of Campeche in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. For awhile, forecasters didn’t give the unstable air mass much of a chance to develop into a tropical storm, let alone a monster hurricane. But once it defied the odds, it took off because of warm water and it managed to avoid high-level cross winds that often decapitate storms, especially in autumn. As Milton neared Florida it hit those winds, called shear, which ate away at its strength, as meteorologists had forecasted.

    Warm water fuels hurricanes. It’s crucial that the surface water be at least 79 degrees (26 degrees Celsius) and it helps incredibly when there’s deep warm water.

    The water at Milton’s birth and along its path was around 87 degrees (30.5 degrees Celsius). That’s almost 2 degrees (1 degree Celsius) warmer than normal and near record levels, both on the surface and deep, McNoldy said.

    “Part of the reason it was so warm is because of global warming,” Vecchi said, though he added that last year’s El Nino — a natural warming of ocean waters that influences weather worldwide — and other natural factors played a role. “Now the storm has a lot more energy to draw on.”

    That water became an all-you-can eat buffet for Milton.

    Much like an ice skater spinning with her arms close in rather than outstretched, Milton’s small size and pinhole eye — which became as small as 4 miles across — also made it easier to supercharge.

    And then there’s the track. Corbosiero couldn’t think of a similar track for such a powerful storm, especially in October when there are fewer strong storms in the Gulf and the nastiest storms are more in the Caribbean.

    Klotzbach found one in 1848, before good records were kept, unearthing a storm other experts weren’t quite familiar with.

    Usually storms in the Gulf of Mexico start in the east and go west or just go north, but Milton is heading east-northeast, Vecchi said. That’s because of a weather system in Canada and the U.S. East Coast that is pushing the westerly winds that are common in mid-latitudes down to where Milton is, where autumn wind from the west is less common.

    With water piling up with storm surge in this “very, very rare direction,” Corbosiero said Milton “has the potential to be a worst-case scenario” if it directly hits Tampa, where the last major hurricane direct hit was in 1921.

    “It’s extraordinarily bad,” McNoldy said.

    From overpriced coffee to impulse buys, we’ve all been guilty of splurging on things we don’t really need, but for PhD student Mia Westrap, her tendency to spend on ‘unnecessary items’ became a wake-up call.

    Earning £2,100 a month post-tax as a health and social worker, Mia noticed her random purchases — including eating out, drinking and indulging in Pepsi Max  — were quickly piling up. 

    ‘Sick and tired’ of never having any money to spare and dipping into her overdraft at the end of every month, she decided to embark on a ‘no buy year’.

    Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Mia said she defines her no buy year as only spending money on ‘absolute necessities’, such as rent, food bills and transport, meaning she can’t splurge on ‘treat’ items like books, clothes and nights out.

    She spends around £1,200 on rent and bills for her flat in Southampton, Hampshire, and tucks what’s left into building up an ‘emergency fund’.

    The only thing she doesn’t budget for is her weekly Asda food shop, which she says ‘works out pretty cheap’. She even sold her car, which was costing her £200 a month, to save money on transport.

    When Mia began her no-spend year, in January of this year, she started with zero savings and set herself the goal of banking £4,000 after 12 months.

    She admits she was initially worried about experiencing FOMO. The 26-year-old was used to a busy social life, especially during the busy summer months when her weekends would typically fill up with bottomless brunches. But, this wasn’t enough to put her off her new, frugal lifestyle.

    And surprisingly, she soon realised she didn’t have to turn down many plans, as she says she was ‘always happy to come along to plans with friends and just not spend any money’.

    Instead of participating in rounds of drinks at the pub, Mia will usually just opt for water or bring her own coffee in a flask. She says: ‘My friends are very generous and may get me a soft drink, but I never expect it from anybody and prefer to encourage them to save their own money. 

    ‘I haven’t found it to be awkward yet, because they all know about my savings journey.’

    She was never bored either, managing to keep herself occupied with lots of free activities, from going on long walks to having picnics and girl’s nights in, ‘where everyone brings a bottle of wine’. 

    She adds: ‘A lot of what I’m “turning down” are things I would not have been able to afford in the first place prior to the no buy year so my life hasn’t changed much. ‘

    However, she does say August was the toughest month of the year so far, due to a holiday in the South of France and attending Taylor Swift’s Era tour (both of which she had planned before starting the ‘no buy year’).

    Mia documented her week-long trip to Marseille on TikTok, where she revealed that she stayed at her friend’s villa, so spent nothing on accommodation or food, and contributed just £280.77 for driving costs.

    In fact, she says her biggest adjustment was actually to do with her wardrobe, saying she had to get used to wearing the same four or five outfits on a rotation, and ‘feeling confident’ in them.

    She said: ‘It’s surprised me how nobody in my life or online has pointed this out, which definitely reflects how toxic my mindset towards outfit repeating and wanting to buy the latest trends was.’

    The only time Mia broke her rules was back in January, when she ‘gained a little bit of weight’ after abdominal surgery and was ‘feeling awful’ in the clothes she had, so she allowed herself to buy a pair of trousers and a few T-shirts.

    Apart from that, it’s been ‘smooth sailing’.

    She says: ‘I haven’t broken anything massively and gone into debt or regretted anything that I’ve broken it for.’

    And, her strict mindset has worked. By September, she’d already worked her way up to £5,500, which she said felt ‘fantastic’ and even began investing. 

    Now, she’s upped her target to £7,000 to build to her emergency fund even further, and allow herself ‘peace of mind’.

    Mia admits one motivation to keep going is her TikTok account, where she has been regularly posting updates on her ‘no-buy’ year. She now has almost 30,000 followers to ‘hold her accountable’. 

    She’s found the majority of people supportive of her journey and says her friends are likely pleased she’s no longer recommending expensive brunch options.



    Mia’s top tips for those thinking of doing a ‘no buy year’

    1. ‘Don’t avoid your bank balance like the plague’: ‘You’ll automatically become more careful with your finances if you’re facing them head-on’
    2. Share your goals with friends and family: Mia suggests letting your nearest and dearest know so that they ‘can support you and be aware that you may not be turning up to every event’
    3. Bring a big backpack everywhere: ‘Get used to carrying a really big backpack around every day, with a book, jacket and flask so you’re not tempted to buy anything when you’re out and about.’
    4. Try and find people to hold you accountable: ‘Try and find people in your life that hold you accountable and don’t surround yourself with people who will encourage you to spend your money on things like takeaways if you consciously told them you don’t want to do that.’

    She said: ‘I think that’s down to the fact we’re all living in the same cost of living crisis.’

    As for Christmas though, Mia is going to relax her rules.

    While she told her followers she would previously ‘blow her student loan’ on ‘ridiculous Christmas presents’ for her friends and family, this year she plans to be ‘mindful of asking people what they want’. 

    Mia doesn’t plan to set a budget for gifts, she said: ‘As long as it’s reasonable and it’s something the people in my life genuinely want then I’m more than happy to buy it for them.’

    But Mia wouldn’t recommend a no-spend year for everyone. She says: ‘I never want to advise people to do a no buy year if they’ve got dependents like children or pets, because it’s just not doable. You can’t budget your way out of poverty.’

    However, she adds: ‘If you’re like me and you were just rinsing your money dry every month on frivolous things and being reckless, it’s a good way to practice restraint.’

    Although Mia is not planning to continue her no-buy year into 2025, she still intends to live frugally, making purchases in ‘moderation’.

    The first thing she’ll buy? ‘A better hoover and a mattress.’

    If you are a regular Instagram user, chances are you’ve stumbled upon the beautiful visuals of Cedar Club House, a recently opened restaurant and bar on Tolstoy Lane in Janpath, Delhi. With its Renaissance-inspired architecture and modern culinary flair, Cedar Club House promises an immersive dining experience that pleases both the eyes and the palate.

    As I stepped into Cedar, I was immediately taken by the striking contrast of bold black and white patterned flooring paired with a marble fountain, setting an inviting tone. The wrought iron chairs and lush green interiors lend an air of elegance, while the vibrant bar area buzzed with high-energy music.  
    But I had planned for a quieter dinner. Fortunately, Cedar offers two exclusive private dining rooms, ideal for intimate gatherings. Walking along a cosy alley, I sat at the other dining area. As I settled in, I was pleasantly surprised to discover another bar in the dining area.

    Cedar’s Cocktails Get A Thumbs Up:

    I decided to kick off my culinary journey with a Cedar House Punch-a bourbon cocktail that expertly balanced richness and refreshment. My dining companion opted for Kaffir Lime-Infused Gin & Tonis which quickly became a favourite on the table. We also sampled the Caribbean Long Island Iced Tea, a vibrant blue concoction that was enough to liven up my spirits.

    Cedar’s Food Review:

    Cedar’s menu is a delightful fusion of global cuisine delicacies. From classic Indian dishes to innovative international flavours, there’s something to satisfy every palate. For dinner, I indulged in the Tandoori Prawns, which were perfectly cooked and had a smoky, spicy flavour. The Chicken Yellow Curry Dimsum was another highlight, with its creamy texture and delicious oyster sauce flavour. The Malabar Coast Fish, paired with coconut curry and rice, was a satisfying and flavorful dish. I also recommend the Angara chicken tikka, which is a unique twist on the classic dish.

    While the appetizers and main courses were excellent, the dessert course fell short of expectations. I sampled the Pistachio Tres Leches and Baked Cheesecake, but neither captured my sweet tooth’s affection. 

    Overall Impression

    Cedar Club House is a beautiful restaurant with a unique ambience and good food. However, there is room for improvement in the dessert department and mosquito control. Nevertheless, it stands as a fantastic destination for weeknight dining, merging vibrant music and stunning interiors into a memorable experience. If you’re looking for a high-energy dining experience with delicious food and cocktails, Cedar Club House is definitely worth a visit.

However, some reports suggest that dates can also cause constipation, leading some to avoid them altogether. But is this theory fact or fiction? Dr. Varalakshmi helps us decipher it.

    According to the health expert, dates are rich in fibre, and excessive consumption can slow down digestion, potentially increasing the risk of constipation. “Dates are sweet and stringent with cold and heavy qualities, which can make them difficult to digest if consumed excessively daily. This can dampen our Agni,” she explained, emphasizing that consuming dates in the right way and amount can aid digestion and improve overall health.

    The Right Way to Eat Dates to Prevent Constipation: How Many Can You Eat in a Day?

    1. Soak Dates

    Dr. Varalakshmi recommends soaking dates for a few hours to reduce their heaviness and aid digestion.

    2. Add Dry Ginger

    Sprinkle some dry ginger powder on dates before consuming them. Dry ginger, or saunth, helps warm the food, promoting healthy digestion.

    3. Prepare a Cooling Drink

    Try making ‘khajuradhi mantha,’ a drink with dates, raisins, and figs. This refreshing drink helps prevent digestive issues and keeps you hydrated.

    Dr. Varalakshmi also suggests consuming a maximum of three dates per day as a snack to reap their benefits.

    Here’s how Helene and other storms dumped a whopping 40 trillion gallons of rain on the South

    More than 40 trillion gallons of rain drenched the Southeast United States in the last week from Hurricane Helene and a run-of-the-mill rainstorm that sloshed in ahead of it — an unheard of amount of water that has stunned experts.

    That’s enough to fill the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium 51,000 times, or Lake Tahoe just once. If it was concentrated just on the state of North Carolina that much water would be 3.5 feet deep (more than 1 meter). It’s enough to fill more than 60 million Olympic-size swimming pools.

    “That’s an astronomical amount of precipitation,” said Ed Clark, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. “I have not seen something in my 25 years of working at the weather service that is this geographically large of an extent and the sheer volume of water that fell from the sky.”

    The flood damage from the rain is apocalyptic, meteorologists said. More than 100 people are dead, according to officials.

    Private meteorologist Ryan Maue, a former NOAA chief scientist, calculated the amount of rain, using precipitation measurements made in 2.5-mile-by-2.5 mile grids as measured by satellites and ground observations. He came up with 40 trillion gallons through Sunday for the eastern United States, with 20 trillion gallons of that hitting just Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Florida from Hurricane Helene.

    Clark did the calculations independently and said the 40 trillion gallon figure (151 trillion liters) is about right and, if anything, conservative. Maue said maybe 1 to 2 trillion more gallons of rain had fallen, much if it in Virginia, since his calculations.

    Clark, who spends much of his work on issues of shrinking western water supplies, said to put the amount of rain in perspective, it’s more than twice the combined amount of water stored by two key Colorado River basin reservoirs: Lake Powell and Lake Mead.

    Several meteorologists said this was a combination of two, maybe three storm systems. Before Helene struck, rain had fallen heavily for days because a low pressure system had “cut off” from the jet stream — which moves weather systems along west to east — and stalled over the Southeast. That funneled plenty of warm water from the Gulf of Mexico. And a storm that fell just short of named status parked along North Carolina’s Atlantic coast, dumping as much as 20 inches of rain, said North Carolina state climatologist Kathie Dello.

    Then add Helene, one of the largest storms in the last couple decades and one that held plenty of rain because it was young and moved fast before it hit the Appalachians, said University of Albany hurricane expert Kristen Corbosiero.

    “It was not just a perfect storm, but it was a combination of multiple storms that that led to the enormous amount of rain,” Maue said. “That collected at high elevation, we’re talking 3,000 to 6000 feet. And when you drop trillions of gallons on a mountain, that has to go down.”

    The fact that these storms hit the mountains made everything worse, and not just because of runoff. The interaction between the mountains and the storm systems wrings more moisture out of the air, Clark, Maue and Corbosiero said.

    North Carolina weather officials said their top measurement total was 31.33 inches in the tiny town of Busick. Mount Mitchell also got more than 2 feet of rainfall.

    Before 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, “I said to our colleagues, you know, I never thought in my career that we would measure rainfall in feet,” Clark said. “And after Harvey, Florence, the more isolated events in eastern Kentucky, portions of South Dakota. We’re seeing events year in and year out where we are measuring rainfall in feet.”

    Storms are getting wetter as the climate change s, said Corbosiero and Dello. A basic law of physics says the air holds nearly 4% more moisture for every degree Fahrenheit warmer (7% for every degree Celsius) and the world has warmed more than 2 degrees (1.2 degrees Celsius) since pre-industrial times.

    Corbosiero said meteorologists are vigorously debating how much of Helene is due to worsening climate change and how much is random.

    In a quick analysis, not peer-reviewed but using a method published in a study about Hurricane Harvey’s rainfall, three scientists at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Lab determined that climate change caused 50% more rainfall during Helene in some parts of Georgia and the Carolinas.

    For Dello, the “fingerprints of climate change” were clear.

    “We’ve seen tropical storm impacts in western North Carolina. But these storms are wetter and these storms are warmer. And there would have been a time when a tropical storm would have been heading toward North Carolina and would have caused some rain and some damage, but not apocalyptic destruction. ”

Well, wishing for a magic wand in this digital era may not fetch you anything but the same digital world can empower you with the knowledge to be aware of all the risk factors that can be worked upon to clear up hindrances towards a healthy life. One major disease that the world, especially India, is facing is heart disease also known as cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVDs are a range of disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels. It has been found that India has one of the highest burdens of cardiovascular disease (CVD) worldwide. According to a study by InterHeart, CVD risk factors such as abdominal obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are higher among Indians, even at young ages, than among other ethnic groups. This may be due to an underlying genetic predisposition to metabolic deregulation and cardiomyopathy as well as the indulgences towards unhealthier food choices consisting of excessive red meats, saturated fats, trans fats, sodium, sugars, alcohol, tobacco, low fibre diet and lack of physical activities.

    There are modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors responsible for CVDs. While one has no control over non-modifiable factors like genetic predisposition, gender, ethnicity or age, there is a lot of scope for making changes in modifiable risk factors like diet, exercise, stress management and avoidance of smoking and alcohol indulgences. There is scientific evidence to claim that nutrition might be the best preventive factor for CVD deaths.

    These are some of the practical nutritional tips that can help one come back to a healthy eating habit:

    1.Start working on one habit at a time. Cut down on all the calorie and sugar-laden foods, fatty, deep-fried foods. Keep them as an occasional treat and that too in a controlled portion. Having such foods several times on weekdays and (not to mention the weekends) will certainly add up extra fat deposits around the abdomen as your energy expenditure does not match the super-sized indulgence.

    2.Cut down on carbonated drinks, sugary beverages and many other processed foods which have sugar hidden under several names. Refined carbohydrates are one of the main causes leading to all lifestyle diseases.

    3.After cutting down on all the ‘excesses’, start working on the portion size of the regular meals. When it is more than needed, try starting meals with salads, raitas or soups and then go to the main course of chapatis or rice. Vegetable salads can be steamed, grilled or boiled if there is intolerance towards raw salads. Salads consisting of vegetables and sprouts add fibre to the diet, give you a feeling of fullness and will stop you from overloading your plate. This has to be practised for every meal of the day consistently.

    4.Sodium plays a pivotal role in cardiac health. Excess intake of salt, salted products, and processed foods containing sodium must be curbed.

    5.Add food from all food groups that is less processed cereals, pulses, sprouts, dry fruits and nuts, vegetables and fruits, skimmed versions of dairy foods and lean meat. Take care of the portion size. Avoid ultra-processed foods.

    6. Keep your gut healthy because good gut microbiota helps in overall well-being and also boosts immunity.

    7. Get guidance from a qualified dietitian and follow consistently rather than getting carried away with fad diet information from various unprofessional sources because diet is not about only calorie restriction but rather a comprehensive approach which considers all the facets of health.

    These are all required to ensure an intake of all the macro and micronutrients needed for the human body. Combine a clean eating habit with exercise and stress management to reduce the risk factor for heart disease.
