  • For TikTok users, mourning, frustration and clinging to hope as TikTok ban looms

For TikTok users, mourning, frustration and clinging to hope as TikTok ban looms

NEW YORK — The U.S. is inching closer and closer to a potential TikTok ban — with the nation’s highest court upholding a law that’s set to halt new downloads of the app starting Sunday. But many questions around what exactly this ban will look like, and whether it will actually be enforced, remain.

That puts millions of users and content creators in limbo — particularly influencers and small business owners who have come to rely on the mega-popular social media platform as a source of income.

Among those individuals is Terrell Wade, a comedian, actor and content creator with 1.5 million followers on TikTok under the handle @TheWadeEmpire. Wade, who has turned his TikTok presence into a full-time job, said he expects “two days of chaos” as the Sunday deadline nears.

“At this point, I really don’t know what to believe,” Wade told The Associated Press.

In a unanimous decision on Friday, the Supreme Court upheld a federal law that will ban TikTok unless it’s sold by its China-based parent company before Jan. 19 — ruling that a risk to national security posed by the platform’s ties to China overcomes First Amendment concerns about limiting free speech on and by the app.

A sale does not appear imminent, meaning the ban should go into effect Sunday. But the ruling also arrives just days before the inauguration of a new president.

President Joe Biden’s administration has maintained that TikTok must change its ownership to address national security concerns, but signaled that it won’t enforce the law on Sunday, the Democrat’s final full day in office. On Friday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that actions to enforce the law will fall to the new administration due to “the sheer fact of timing.” Meanwhile, Republican President-elect Donald Trump, who once also tried to ban TikTok, has now vowed to preserve access to the platform. But what his options will be following Monday’s inauguration remains unclear.

Among other points of confusion is what a ban on TikTok will look like. Experts have said the app will not disappear from existing users’ devices once the law takes effect. But new users won’t be able to download it and updates will not be available. That will eventually render the app unworkable, the Justice Department said in court filings.

All of this is “a reminder to the creator community that social media platforms can come and go,” notes Kelsey Chickering, a principal analyst at Forrester, stressing the disruptions TikTok creators and influencers will feel if the ban takes effect. If access is lost, she adds, many will have to pivot and re-build their presence on other platforms.

While bracing for a potential Sunday ban, Wade is among creators who hope that something happens to avert the shutdown, although he thinks he has enough followers on other platforms to stay afloat.

“I’m still remaining optimistic,” he said.

Still, many continue to express fears over the potential of losing TikTok.

Janette Ok, a full-time content creator based in Los Angeles, says TikTok is the primary platform she uses today. As an influencer and also an artist, she says the platform has helped her make brand deals and promote her music — bringing “opportunities that I never believed I could experience in my lifetime.”

Ok was also among influencers who TikTok brought to Washington in 2023 to lobby for the preservation of the app, and remembers a ban being discussed as far back as 2020. And as someone who is Asian, the efforts to ban TikTok over the years have also felt “a little xenophobic,” she added.

“I hear all these different things, and I don’t know what to believe — so that’s where I’m very frustrated. I’m confused. I’m disappointed,” Ok said. “It’s a beautiful app, it’s brought so many people together, it’s changed a lot of people’s lives, and for it to just be taken away like that feels … so not American.”

Jordan Smith, a former WNBA player who operates The Elevated Closet in Austin, Texas — a clothing brand for tall women — depends on TikTok and TikTok Shop to find customers that fit her niche demographic that’s difficult to specifically market to otherwise.

“On TikTok I’ve just been able to find that audience so much easier,” she said.

She fears losing TikTok will hurt her business, and she’ll miss it personally, too. So she’s following what people are saying will happen on Sunday and hopes a ban might be diverted.

“It kind of seems like Biden’s kind of pushing it off to Trump,” she said. “So people have hopes that maybe we have a few more days and it won’t go dark on Sunday, but I don’t really know.”

Alejandro Flores-Munoz owns a catering business in the Denver area called Combi Taco, or @combicafe on TikTok. TikTok helped him reach customers without spending money on marketing, he said. He was optimistic that TikTok would stick around until he heard Friday’s Supreme Court decision.

“Up until today, I was extremely optimistic. And after today’s Supreme Court decision to uphold the ban or the sale of TikTok, I weigh my options,” he said. “But honestly, it’s very disheartening, specifically because I truly did rely on the app for my business and my growth of my business.”

Going viral on TikTok helped Ruben Trujillo market his Cafe Emporos Coffeegrams, a card that includes coffee, tea or hot chocolate. He said he’s growing frustrated with the ever-evolving politics surrounding the ban.

“It’s kind of like they keep putting the ball in each other’s court, but who’s going to make the decision?” he said. He said small business owners are told to “be creative, pull yourself up by the bootstraps,” he said. “And a lot of people did that, and it’s like those bootstraps are being cut now.”

  • What does Big Tech hope to gain from warming up to Trump?

What does Big Tech hope to gain from warming up to Trump?

NEW YORK — In a string of visits, dinners, calls, monetary pledges and social media overtures, big tech chiefs — including Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos — have joined a parade of business and world leaders in trying to improve their standing with President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office in January.

“The first term, everybody was fighting me,” Trump said in remarks at Mar-a-Lago. “In this term, everybody wants to be my friend.”

Tech companies and leaders have now poured millions into his inauguration fund, a sharp increase — in most cases — from past pledges to incoming presidents. But what does the tech industry expect to gain out of their renewed relationships with Trump?

A clue to what the industry is looking for came just days before the election when Microsoft executives — who’ve largely tried to show a neutral or bipartisan stance — joined with a close Trump ally, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, to publish a blog post outlining their approach to artificial intelligence policy.

“Regulation should be implemented only if its benefits outweigh its costs,” said the document signed by Andreessen, his business partner Ben Horowitz, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and the company’s president, Brad Smith.

They also urged the government to back off on any attempt to strengthen copyright laws that would make it harder for companies to use publicly available data to train their AI systems. And they said, “the government should examine its procurement practices to enable more startups to sell technology to the government.”

Trump has pledged to rescind President Joe Biden’s sweeping AI executive order, which sought to protect people’s rights and safety without stifling innovation. He hasn’t specified what he would do in its place, but his campaign said AI development should be “rooted in Free Speech and Human Flourishing.”

Trump’s choice to head the Interior Department, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, has spoken openly about the need to boost electricity production to meet increased demand from data centers and artificial intelligence.

“The AI battle affects everything from defense to healthcare to education to productivity as a country,″ Burgum said on Nov. 15, referring to artificial intelligence. “And the AI that’s coming in the next 18 months is going to be revolutionary. So there’s just a sense of urgency and a sense of understanding in the Trump administration″ to address it.

Demand for data centers ballooned in recent years due to the rapid growth of cloud computing and artificial intelligence, and local governments are competing for lucrative deals with big tech companies.

But as data centers begin to consume more resources, some residents are pushing back against the world’s most powerful corporations over concerns about the economic, social and environmental health of their communities.

“Maybe Big Tech should buy a copy of ‘The Art of The Deal’ to figure out how to best negotiate with this administration,” suggested Paul Swanson, an antitrust attorney for the law firm Holland & Hart. “I won’t be surprised if they find ways to reach some accommodations and we end up seeing more negotiated resolutions and consent decrees.”

Although federal regulators began cracking down on Google and Facebook during Trump’s first term as president — and flourished under Biden — most experts expect his second administration to ease up on antitrust enforcement and be more receptive to business mergers.

Google may benefit from Trump’s return after he made comments on the campaign trail suggesting a breakup of the company isn’t in the U.S. national interest, after a judge declared its search engine an illegal monopoly. But recent nominations put forward by his transition team have favored those who have been critical of Big Tech companies, suggesting Google won’t be entirely off the hook.

Cook’s notoriously rocky relationship with the EU can be traced back to a 2016 ruling from Brussels in a tax case targeting Apple. Cook slammed the bloc’s order for Apple to pay back up to 13 billion euros ($13.7 billion) in Irish back taxes as “total political crap.”

Trump, then in his first term as president, piled on, referring to the European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, who was spearheading a campaign on special tax deals and a crackdown on Big Tech companies, as the “tax lady” who “really hates the U.S.”

Brussels was eventually vindicated after the bloc’s top court rejected Apple’s appeal this year, though it didn’t stop Cook from calling Trump to complain, Trump recounted in a podcast in October.

Trump hosted Cook for a Friday evening dinner at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago resort, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to comment publicly. Neither Apple nor the Trump transition team has commented on the nature of their discussions.

Altman, Amazon and Meta all pledged to donate $1 million each to Trump’s inaugural fund.

During his first term, Trump criticized Amazon and railed against the political coverage at The Washington Post, which billionaire Bezos owns. Meanwhile, Bezos had criticized some of Trump’s past rhetoric. In 2019, Amazon also argued in a court case that Trump’s bias against the company harmed its chances of winning a $10 billion Pentagon contract.

More recently, Bezos has struck a more conciliatory tone. He recently said at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit in New York that he was “optimistic” about Trump’s second term, while also endorsing president-elect’s plans to cut regulations.

The donation from Meta came just weeks after Zuckerberg met with Trump privately at Mar-a-Lago.

During the 2024 campaign, Zuckerberg did not endorse a candidate for president, but voiced a more positive stance toward Trump. Earlier this year, he praised Trump’s response to his first assassination attempt. Still, Trump in recent months had continued to attack Zuckerberg publicly.

And Altman, who is in a legal dispute with AI rival Elon Musk, has said he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence in the incoming administration. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging that the maker of ChatGPT betrayed its founding aims of benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits.

  • Apex the $45M stegosaurus is on display in New York. Here’s what scientists hope to learn about it

Apex the $45M stegosaurus is on display in New York. Here’s what scientists hope to learn about it

NEW YORK — The most expensive dinosaur fossil ever discovered will be on view in New York starting this weekend, American Museum of Natural History officials announced Wednesday.

The giant stegosaurus fossil, dubbed “Apex,” is 11 feet (3.3 meters) tall and 27 feet (8.2 meters) nose to tail. The display will start in a giant atrium at the museum’s entrance before being moved to the museum’s existing fossil halls next year.

The museum also confirmed the identity of the philanthropist who purchased Apex. Billionaire hedge fund manager and longtime museum donor Ken Griffin bought it at an auction in July for $45 million, the most ever paid for dinosaur remains. Sean Decatur, president of the American Museum of Natural History, said that Griffin approved a long-term loan of Apex, as well as allowing scientists to take samples from the fossil for analysis.

“This partnership allows Apex to have pride of place at a museum world-renowned for its dinosaur collection and for its longstanding leadership in paleontology and, even more exciting, enables us to pursue specialized Stegosaurus research centered around this extraordinary and scientifically important specimen,” Decatur said in a statement Wednesday.

Of the more than 80 stegosauri made available to scientific institutions, very few are substantially complete, the statement said. Apex is the most complete specimen ever found, Decatur said. With about 80% of its 320 bones preserved, it is miraculous for creature that has been dead for 150 million years. The specimen is also prized by scientists because it is estimated to have died at a relatively old age, and it could reveal insights into stegosaurus metabolism and bone growth.

Scientists will make CT scans of the internal structures of the dinosaur’s skull and analyze a small sample extracted from one of its giant thigh bones, the statement said.

“As exciting as is it is to have this dinosaur on display, it is even more exciting to have the opportunity to study it and make important scientific data available for research,” said Roger Benson, who curates the American Museum of Natural History’s fossil amphibians, reptiles, birds and plants.

The museum’s paleontologists have a long record of breaking ground in dinosaur research, including identifying the first dinosaur eggs and early evidence of dinosaur feathers, the statement said.

Commercial paleontologist Jason Cooper discovered in Apex on his land near Dinosaur, Colorado, on the Utah border near Dinosaur National Monument.

Griffin’s successful $44.6 million bid for Apex over the summer set a record for dinosaur remains, beating out the $31.8 million paid for “Stan,” the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex sold in 2020. Like Apex, the Stan fossils were purchased by a private individual with plans to make it available to the public. The T. rex has been slated to be on display in Abu Dhabi, in United Arab Emirates, at a museum that opens in late 2025.

  • Wigan Athletic will hope November snub can ease Man Utd and Arsenal transfer pressure

Wigan Athletic will hope November snub can ease Man Utd and Arsenal transfer pressure

Wigan Athletic’s League One form heading into the November international break is far from satisfactory, as the Latics have not won in the third tier since a 3-0 victory over Peterborough United on 1st October.

The Latics’ big win over the Posh last month arrived as part of an impressive run in which Shaun Maloney’s men enjoyed seven consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, with six of those shut-outs coming in League One.

But since then, the Greater Manchester side have won just one of their last five games, which came in the form of a 2-0 triumph over League Two Carlisle United in the FA Cup first round, and even then Maloney’s side did require extra time to get the job done at Brunton Park against inferior opposition.

The majority of the Latics squad will look to utilise the international break as an opportunity to put in the hard yards on the training ground in an effort to address their poor league form.

Meanwhile, the likes of Dale Taylor and Thelo Aasgaard, who represent the Northern Ireland Under-21s, and Norway Under-21s respectively, will be in action for their nations over the course of the next week.

Latics goalkeeper Sam Tickle has also become used to international call-ups since keeping a clean sheet on debut for the England Under-21s last season, but did not receive a call-up this time around.

Tickle’s England Under-21 snub will ease Latics transfer pressure amid Manchester United and Arsenal interest

Sam Tickle - Wigan Athletic GK

While the talented shot-stopper has not received an international call-up for November, there is no doubting his impressive ability between the sticks.

He was instrumental towards the Latics’ previously mentioned run of six consecutive clean sheets in League One earlier this term, and produced a stunning save to keep his side in the lead during their recent FA Cup win at Carlisle.

Following Tickle’s exploits at Brunton Park, Maloney said: “Sam has made two unbelievable saves at the end, and he’s just an unbelievable talent.

“And I still don’t think people realise how good this guy is.

“If there is a shot to be saved and my job depends on it, or my life depends on it, there isn’t another English goalkeeper in all four leagues I’d choose over him.”

But contrary to Maloney’s comments when heaping heavy praise on his goalkeeper, Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal are seemingly very aware of the 22-year-old’s abilities between the sticks, as they are both tracking his progress, according to TeamTalk.

However, Tickle’s recent omission from the England Under-21 squad will mean that the youngster will not have another chance to display his ability on the international stage ahead of the January transfer window, which could be enough to stave off interest for now.

There is no doubt that the Latics will have to eventually sell their academy graduate due to the increasingly high profile interest in his services, but the fact that he is not in the Young Lions team this month could give the Greater Manchester club the transfer respite they need.

Amid a potential relegation battle, the Tics simply have to retain their star man come January, as he has kept an impressive total of seven clean sheets in 14 League One outings.

Maloney was surprised at Tickle’s England snub

    Shaun Maloney

After the Young Lions chose to leave Tickle out of their squad on this occasion, the Latics boss told Wigan Today: “I was really surprised, I have to say.

“I’ve been on the other side, when you’re involved with an international team, and you have to make decisions that will leave some club managers happy and some unhappy.

“Honestly, I don’t know the reasons, I’ve had absolutely no feedback from the manager or goalkeeping coach.

“But this game is about opinions, and my opinion, and I’m sure time will back me up, is that this guy is going to be a top, top goalkeeper.

“It’s a privilege to have him at this club.”

But while Maloney is surprised by England’s decision not to include Tickle in their Under-21 squad this time around, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Tics, who could do without being forced into a sale this January.

  • Haroon Malik’s vision sparks hope for a new era in Pakistan football

Haroon Malik’s vision sparks hope for a new era in Pakistan football

LAHORE  –  Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalisation Committee Chairman Haroon Ahmed Malik highlighted the longstanding challenges and fresh initiatives aimed at transforming Pakistan’s football landscape. Malik said this during his address at the 2024 AFC Member Associations Conference in Seoul. He emphasized that Pakistan’s football potential has been restricted by frequent leadership changes and governance inconsistencies, but expressed optimism that new reforms could drive lasting progress.

Addressing global football leaders, the PFF NC Chairman shared that one of the committee’s primary goals is to establish stable management within the PFF, creating a foundation for sustainable growth. Recognizing the need for an independent and effective governance model, he emphasized the importance of reducing political influence in decision-making – a move crucial for securing football’s future in Pakistan.

Since his appointment in 2021, Malik has led a concerted effort to rebuild the PFF with transparency and accountability. “One of my first initiatives was implementing strict financial controls to ensure all transactions are clear and accountable. This shift has not only restored confidence in the PFF’s financial operations but has also opened new opportunities for the sport’s development.”

Under Malik’s leadership, the Normalisation Committee has also focused on nurturing youth talent through grassroots programs and supporting football academies across the country. By investing in these foundational areas, Malik aims to create a strong pipeline of emerging players who can elevate Pakistan’s performance on the international stage.

“A notable milestone has been the revitalization of women’s football, which had long been overlooked. The Committee has organized dedicated leagues for women and provided training facilities to encourage female participation in the sport – a development widely celebrated among fans and players alike,” he added.

“One of my enduring challenges remains Pakistan’s outdated football infrastructure. To address this, the Committee has actively pursued plans for new stadiums and training facilities. Additionally, I have sought partnerships with corporate sponsors and international organizations to secure financial support, helping to overcome the federation’s longstanding budget constraints,” he asserted.  Despite these hurdles, the Normalisation Committee’s efforts have begun to yield promising results. The national team has shown steady improvement, while the domestic league is gradually regaining its fan base. Malik’s vision and dedication have breathed new life into Pakistan football, instilling hope among players, fans, and officials. As the Normalisation Committee’s work nears completion, the next steps for Pakistan football hinge on continuity. Malik has laid the groundwork for a more structured and independent federation, and the nation now looks to future leaders to carry this progress forward, bringing Pakistan’s football dreams closer to reality.

  • After David Taylor’s Heartbreaking Loss, Fans Hope For Last Chance to Witness Olympic Champion on the Mat: “Gets Pulled Back”

After David Taylor’s Heartbreaking Loss, Fans Hope For Last Chance to Witness Olympic Champion on the Mat: “Gets Pulled Back”

David Taylor’s most anticipated wrestling quest has left him and his fans in dismay. For years, Taylor’s journey in wrestling has been an emblem of prowess and a fierce drive for competition. His unanticipated return to the mat at the 2024 World Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania, left fans worldwide in suspense – they waited for his face-off against the renowned ‘Russian Tank’ Abdulrashid Sadulaev.

Moreover, this bout wasn’t merely a wrestling match for Taylor, he had been manifesting for quite some time, and when fate positioned them against each other in the opening round, it set the stage for a historic showdown. However, the ‘Magic Man’ of the wrestling realm put the tournament at stake by losing to a formidable competitor. After his retirement, Taylor took up coaching as his next step. But he did not take long to return to the competitive mat.

David Taylor tried to go from retirement to readiness, motivated by the goal of finally testing himself against Sadulaev on the global stage. However, his optimism met a formidable wall as Sadulaev blanked him 7-0. For Taylor, every point lost in the bout echoed louder due to the months of preparation, such a disappointing loss in the opening round put Taylor’s entire tournament at risk.

This also would mean that Taylor’s future in the championships is hinged on Sadulaev’s journey to the finals. As Sadulaev continued to advance, Taylor found himself back in the running for a repechage chance, sparking hope for a final World medal. However, Taylor displayed the same composure in his match against Abdulrashid Sadulaev that has defined his career. Reflecting on his missed opportunities in the match, Taylor acknowledged the critical need to convert his few scoring chances, especially two shots that he couldn’t capitalize on.

“I did not score on the two times I shot and he did. That was the difference,” Taylor stated while speaking to United World Wrestling understanding just how small margins can be deciding factors in elite wrestling. Fans cherishing his journey at the Tokyo Olympics were disheartened at his defeat at the U.S. Olympic Trials, and they treated this match as the last opportunity to witness Taylor on the mat. This tournament, after all, was supposed to be a curtain call for one of wrestling’s brightest stars, against the toughest opponents in his weight class.

Disheartened yet hopeful fans share two cents on David Taylor’s last dance hinges on Sadulaev’s final run

As Sadulaev inches closer to the finals, Taylor’s supporters stay hopeful for one final bout. A recent Reddit post, too, shared the news of the Russian Tank taking over Taylor, with netizens taking the opportunity to share their thoughts on the electrifying fight. One fan tried to analyze the match, highlighting that although David Taylor (DT) resorted to taking an aggressive approach against Sadulaev, he struggled to break through his defenses. They wrote, “DT took all the shots but never really got close to scoring at all. Really hoping Sadulaev goes all the way and DT gets pulled back. It would be really disappointing if that’s the last we see DT wrestle.” The commenter also seemed dissatisfied that this might be the last match of Taylor’s and that his career could unfortunately end with a loss.

Another user reflected both admiration and realistic expectations for Sadulaev’s skill. They anticipated Sadulaev’s dominance over Taylor, acknowledging his elite status and ability to perform exceptionally in high-stakes matches. The netizen commented, “Can’t wait to watch it. Not surprised about the result though, even though I was wrong on it. Sadulaev is an elite wrestler and when he shows up, he shows up. Hopefully he can stay injury free and it’ll be interesting how he does in this tournament.” However, as it appears, despite this outcome being predictable to some extent, the fan still held some uncertainty, hoping for a different result.

    Article continues below this ad

When Taylor attempted his initial shot, Sadulaev quickly adjusted his approach, effectively controlling the pace and neutralizing Taylor’s offense. Moreover, Abdulrashid’s defense played a strong role in nullifying the constant attacks that Taylor tried to make. “Sadulaev completely shut him down. It took one shot from Taylor at the beginning of the match for him to completely adjust to his pace.” With Taylor’s loss in the opening round, his only path to continue competing, and potentially end his career with a medal depends on Sadulaev reaching the finals. And that would pull Taylor back into the repechage.

Taylor took an unexpected retirement and chose to take up a coaching career. But then again he made a comeback to the competitive mat. However, managing both ends together probably turned out to be challenging for the athlete. One Instagram user highlighted the same: “I don’t think you can be a full-time coach and a top-level athlete at the same time. Like a lot of things in life, it’s either one or the other, you have to choose.” The commenter’s opinion threw light on the fact that elite-level wrestling demands intense training, strategic preparation, and mental focus. These commitments might clash with the time, energy, and attention required to coach effectively.

    Article continues below this ad

Another wrestling enthusiast after witnessing the showdown added that Taylor’s struggled to land effective offensive moves during his match against Sadulaev. More so because his attempted shots probably lacked the force or precision to disrupt Sadulaev’s defense. “Bunch of relatively weak shots from Taylor, which led to multiple go behinds from Sadulaev, who looked very fit”, read the fan’s comment.

However, fans and global viewers would now wait again to see if Taylor’s fate will deliver one more chance to showcase his prowess. His tenacity, even in the face of defeat, has reminded fans of the reasons they rally behind him. While the dream of gold at this championship might be over, the chance for a bronze still looms, and that bronze might light up his farewell journey.

  • Charlton Athletic will hope Cardiff City look away from Nathan Jones

Charlton Athletic will hope Cardiff City look away from Nathan Jones

Charlton Athletic will be hoping that Cardiff City conclude their managerial search as soon as possible, with a concerning trend emerging following Nathan Jones’ admission on the vacant hot-seat.

The Bluebirds are on the hunt for their 12th permanent manager in the last 14 years after the dismissal of Erol Bulut, who had failed to win any of his first six matches of the new season and was handed his marching orders over a week ago.

Indeed, Cardiff have finally claimed their first victory of the new season by edging out Millwall at home on Tuesday evening but they still remain rooted to the foot of the division with just four points to their name, and they are seemingly no closer to appointing a new permanent manager.

According to a report from WalesOnline, the Bluebirds have called upon the support of two former unnamed managers alongside one of the largest footballing agencies in Europe to assist their search for a new manager, an appointment which they are not expected to make until the international break with interim boss Omer Riza standing in until then.

However, Charlton will surely hope that they fill the vacancy sooner rather than later. Popular manager Jones, who hails from the Rhondda Valley, is invariably linked with the job whenever it becomes available and has made little secret of his desire to manage his boyhood club one day.

    Nathan Jones’ Cardiff City admission

Jones admitted in 2022 that he would “never turn down” the opportunity to manage Cardiff while with Luton Town. The Welshman took over Charlton in February, a year after a brief and ill-fated stint in the Premier League with Southampton, and admitted that he is enjoying the club’s trajectory although there is every chance that he could be swayed by an offer.

    Nathan Jones

According to reports, the Addicks would require significant compensation to allow the former Stoke City and Luton boss to move elsewhere and are yet to receive contact from Cardiff regarding Jones.

Just days after Cardiff elected to part ways with Bulut, Jones was quizzed on the vacant managerial job back in Wales by the South London Press.

He said: “When this kind of stuff comes up I’m very flattered to be linked with that. One day – I’ve made no secret and been totally open – I would like to manage Cardiff. It is my hometown club. My dad lives close.

“But, right now, I have got a fantastic job and I’m at a wonderful club where I’m really, really looking to build something.

“So that is where we are. I won’t be disrespectful to anyone in any way. So for me it is nothing, I get on with my job day to day and I love my job here and the people I work with. I’ve asked a lot of people to buy-in to that. There is nothing to say really.

When asked if he had received direct contact, Jones added: “If I had I’m not going to suddenly turn around and say it here, am I! There is nothing really to worry about.

“I’ve got a wonderful job here and I took this job for a certain reason – because I believe we can build something special.

“I make no secret about the Cardiff job, because it is my hometown club and all the affiliations I have there. One day I really, really would love to manage the football club.

“Right now I’m Charlton manager and I’m thoroughly enjoying the project we are building.”

Charlton Athletic’s form has tailed off following Nathan Jones, Cardiff City talk

Jones, who steadied the ship after coming in late last season, had taken Charlton up to fifth place after five games of the new campaign. However, Charlton’s run of form following the sacking of Bulut may just invite the inevitable questions.

Bulut’s situation at Cardiff was precarious long before he was eventually sacked, and Charlton lost 2-1 at home to Blackpool on the same day which proved to be the Turk’s last in the dugout.

    Erol Bulut

After Jones spoke about his desire to manage the Bluebirds one day, Charlton have gone on to lose their last two games against Stevenage and most recently, Bristol Rovers.

With that in mind, you do have to wonder whether the strong links to Cardiff have had an impact. Cardiff is widely viewed as a big job and it would represent the fulfillment of a long-term dream for Jones, so it would come as no real surprise if it has indeed turned his head somewhat.

It may be too early to rush to such conclusions just yet, but Charlton will hope that Cardiff bring a new face into the dugout as soon as they can to hand them some much-needed security and breathing room on Jones’ future.

  • Samantha Armytage reportedly on the move to Nine to host network’s next big reality TV hope

Samantha Armytage reportedly on the move to Nine to host network’s next big reality TV hope

Speculation about who could potentially host Channel Nine’s forthcoming The Golden Bachelor is reaching fever pitch.

Entertainment journalist Peter Ford weighed into the debate this week, tipping that the host of the Nine version of the ABC US smash hit will be none other than Samantha Armytage.

The popular presenter, 47, announced her departure from Seven in August after 21 years with the network.

Taking to X, Peter responded to a report on Inside Media about the likely host, claiming it would be almost certainly be the former Farmer Wants A Wife helmer.

‘If I were a betting man, I’d put money on @samarmytage,’ Peter suggested.

‘She’s now a free agent after leaving 7 and has been clear she was interested in new opportunities.’

The report itself scuttled rumours that previous Bachelor host Osher Gunsberg would make a return to the franchise.

‘For those wondering whether original Bachelor host Osher Gunsberg will be returning to the franchise I have some very bad news,’ presenter Rob McKnight began.

‘My sources say Osher has missed out on a Red Rose.’

Rob added that he will be replaced by a ‘popular, but surprising’ TV presenter.

‘And I can confirm, despite media speculation, that it is not Sonia Kruger,’ he said.

Yahoo Lifestyle reported last week that Sonia could be getting ready to jump ship from Seven to host the latest iteration of the Bachelor franchise.

“The word on the street is that Sonia could reboot The Golden Bachelor on Channel Nine in 2025,’ a source told the publication.

Rob said that while he couldn’t spill the beans just yet, that Osher’s replacement would ‘blow your mind.’

TV Blackbox reported in August that Nine will be formally announcing an Australian version of The Golden Bachelor at its yearly Upfronts event in October.

The original series, which screened on ABC in the US, starred 72-year-old Gerry Turner, a retired restauranteur and widower.

Gerry chose to propose to 70-year-old Theresa Nist and the network aired their wedding as a live special.

Despite the fanfare, the couple divorced three months later.

The series proved to be a ratings juggernaut for ABC, with the finale hitting 6.1 million American screens, giving the franchise its highest numbers in three years.

Its premiere episode also set ratings records for ABC, as reported by Deadline , debuting as the highest-rated premiere on Hulu for any series in the franchise, and as ABC’s number one series premiere ever on the streaming platform Live+3.

The publication also reported that the strength of the Golden Bachelor has seen the franchise expand again with ABC announcing The Golden Bachelorette.

When contacted by Daily Mail Australia, a spokesperson for Channel Nine said they wouldn’t be confirming their programming lineup for 2025 until the Upfronts event in October.
