Hybrid models, competitive prices: New Honda Freed and Civic Hybrid officially launched in Singapore, Lifestyle News

Singapore’s official Honda distributor, Kah Motor, is looking to boost its fortunes with the launch of two new models, the latest third-generation Freed MPV, as well as the hybrid-powered version of the Civic sedan.

The new cars come amidst a challenging year for the brand, in the face of high Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums, as well as the entry of several new Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands which have quickly gained market share at the expense of traditional mainstream Japanese marques like Honda.

Kah Motor sold 526 Hondas in the first half of this year, which puts it in 10th position on the charts. In contrast, Chinese carmaker BYD, which was the best-selling brand for the first half of 2024, shifted 2,587 units during the same period, nearly five times as many as Honda sold.

Nicholas Wong, CEO of Kah Motor, acknowledged that while the Chinese EV brands are making aggressive progress in Singapore, there remains a segment of the market that is not ready to embrace full electrification as of yet.

He told AsiaOne at the sidelines of the Freed and Civic Hybrid’s launch event that he hopes that Honda can help fill the gap with its new lineup of hybrid models that offer premium features at a competitive price.

What’s significant about the new Freed?

The latest third-generation Freed is one of the few compact seven-seater MPVs in the market that is eligible for a Category A COE. The car is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a hybrid drivetrain, and produces a total of 130hp and 253Nm of torque.

Fuel economy is rated at 5.1 litres per 100km, which is not far off from that of the Freed’s closest competitor in the market, the Toyota Sienta Hybrid, which has a claimed fuel economy figure of 4 litres per 100km. The only other Cat A seven-seater currently available in the market is the electric-powered BYD M6.

Two variants of the Freed are available, the HS7 and HE7, which retail for $161,099 and $166,099 respectively, both inclusive of COE as of December 2024. A Kah Motor spokesperson revealed that they have already sold “at least 100” units of the Freed before the car’s official launch on Nov 29.

Standard equipment for both include the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance systems, which comes with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, and collision mitigation and braking systems.

The higher-spec HE7 variant includes additional equipment such as automatic folding door mirrors, leather upholstery and steering wheel, rear air con vents, adaptive high beam headlamps, and LED cornering lights.

    What about the Civic Hybrid?

The Civic Hybrid, meanwhile, joins the regular petrol-powered Civic in the lineup, which incidentally has also been given a mid-life facelift to keep it refreshed.

Power for the Civic Hybrid comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine that is paired with two electric motors, for a combined power output of 141hp and 315Nm of torque.

Unfortunately, this means that the car gets bumped into COE Cat B, but the Civic Hybrid compensates for that with its excellent fuel economy figure of 4.6 litres per 100km.

The facelifted Civic models get a revised front end look, with a sportier grille design. In addition, both also get the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance systems as standard, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning with automatic braking.

The Civic Hybrid is priced at $218,099 inclusive of COE, while the regular Civic, which qualifies for a Cat A COE thanks to its 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 129hp, is retailing for $172,099 with COE.

Honda hopes that the new Freed and Civic Hybrid models will help it regain its competitiveness in the market, by appealing to those looking for hybrid-powered cars that are efficient, practical and fun to drive in the transition towards electrification.

  • All-new Bentley Continental GT Speed gets new plug-in hybrid drivetrain, Lifestyle News

All-new Bentley Continental GT Speed gets new plug-in hybrid drivetrain, Lifestyle News

The all-new fourth-generation Bentley Continental GT Speed has officially arrived in Singapore, and the car is Bentley’s most powerful production road car ever, thanks to its first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain.

What’s new on the Continental GT Speed?

    Everything, essentially.

The car has been completely redesigned from the ground up, although it shares a similar style and silhouette as its predecessors, with touches such as the muscular rear haunches and large imposing grille up front being familiar Bentley hallmarks.

The most distinctive styling difference relates to the headlights, and the new Continental GT Speed is the first mainstream Bentley to feature a single headlamp design since the 1950s. The lamps themselves feature a horizontal ‘eyebrow’ design with a deep crystal cut diamond effect and contain 120 different LEDs that are digitally controlled to offer a more seamless transition from lit to unlit areas.

The interior is a blend of high-quality craftsmanship and modern technology. It features precision sculpted quilting throughout the interior, and selectable mood lighting with 30 choices to give the cabin a cocooning effect for the ultimate luxury experience.

There are also three different sound systems to choose from. The standard system comes with 10 speakers and 650 watts, while there is also a Bang & Olufsen system with 16 speakers and 1,500 watts. The top-end system comes from Naim, with 18 speakers and 2,200 watts, complete with active bass transducers built into the front seats, and eight different sound modes.

The biggest changes to the Continental GT Speed lie under the bonnet. For the first time, the car comes with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and Bentley also adds that the latest model is its fastest production road car ever.

The new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 584hp and 800Nm of torque and is mated to an electric motor that produces 187hp and 450Nm of torque. When combined, the drivetrain has a total output of 771hp and 1,000Nm of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and an electronic limited slip differential. This allows the car to go from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 335km/h.

The electric motor itself is powered by a 25.9kWh battery, and when fully charged, the Continental GT Speed can travel on electric power alone for a distance of up to 80km. Plugging it into an 11kW AC charger will top up the battery in slightly under three hours.

    How much is it?

The new Bentley Continental GT Speed starts from $1,538,000 without COE and options. But despite the hefty price tag, Bentley’s official dealer here, Wearnes Automotive, said that it has already received a ‘handful’ of orders from customers.

A convertible version of the Continental GT Speed is expected to be launched sometime next year, but Wearnes did not reveal detailed information about when the car is expected to arrive in Singapore.

The car’s platform has been developed by ZF Chassis Modules, which Foxconn acquired a 50% share of earlier this year.

“We are incredibly proud to showcase a new model that embodies the best of Pininfarina’s design expertise, further cementing our strategic collaboration with Foxconn,” said Silvio Angori, CEO of Pininfarina. “For nearly 95 years, Pininfarina has been at the forefront of merging art and technology, and this partnership with Foxconn represents a natural alignment of our shared culture of perfection and innovation. Foxconn excels in every aspect of its product portfolio, and we are excited to contribute to its growing range of electric vehicles.”

    Multifunctional hybrid model
The Model D is based on the design concept of LMUV (Lifestyle Multipurpose Utility Vehicle) and combines the advantages found in SUV and MPV segments. It is a multifunctional hybrid model, equipped with an 800V powertrain, and adopts Foxconn’s latest generation platform technology.

Inside, the Foxtron Model D is designed to make the most of other products manufactured by Foxconn: the armchairs in the six-seat version have charging pads that fit an iPhone and each front seatback has a slot for an iPad.

The active suspension allows the height to be adjusted by 15 mm to 25 mm. The body design incorporates S-ducts and air curtains specially designed to reduce wind resistance, bringing the drag coefficient to a low 0.23. The Model D’ is the latest in the family of electric vehicles that have been a collaborative work of between Foxconn and Pininfarina.

Foxconn and Pininfarina’s collaboration dates back to 2021, with the introduction of the electric Model E, a luxury sedan featuring cutting-edge technology. This was followed by the Model B in 2022, a stylish urban crossover that combines beauty with high performance. All vehicles, including the new Model D, have been meticulously crafted at Pininfarina’s atelier in Cambiano, Italy, where the team has a long tradition of building bespoke models, small series, and prototypes for some of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands.

“Our design team took great care in creating the Model D from the inside out, focusing on maximizing interior space while maintaining a sleek, aerodynamic exterior,” explained Felix Kilbertus, Chief Creative Officer of Pininfarina. “This approach provides exceptional visibility and a modern, athletic feel that appeals to today’s drivers. The Model D is a significant evolution from traditional SUVs, offering a spacious cabin wrapped in a monolithic, aerodynamic body. We are thrilled with the deep collaboration we’ve had with Foxconn, enabling us to create a cohesive family of electric vehicles that includes the Model E, Model B, and now the Model D.”
