  • Indian Women’s Hockey Team Arrives In Bihar For Asian Champions Trophy 2024

Indian Women’s Hockey Team Arrives In Bihar For Asian Champions Trophy 2024

Rajgir: The Indian women’s hockey Team has arrived in Gaya, marking the start of the first international hockey tournament hosted in the state.

The Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 will take place from November 11 to 20, featuring defending champions India alongside Paris Olympics silver medallists China, as well as Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand, all set against the mesmerising backdrop of the historic town of Rajgir.

Led by captain Salima Tete and vice-captain Navneet Kaur, India will commence their campaign against Malaysia on November 11, followed by a match against Korea on November 12. After a day of rest, India will face Thailand on November 14. On November 16, India will challenge Paris Olympics silver medallists China and conclude the pool stage with a match against Japan on November 17.

“We have been training rigorously at SAI Bengaluru for the Asian Champions Trophy. In previous matches, we faced challenges in the final third of the pitch, so we have focused significantly on improving in that area. We will take it match by match and aim to perform well in each one; every team poses a different challenge, and we won’t take any opponent lightly. This is the first time we’re playing international hockey in Bihar, and we hope to inspire all the girls in the region with our performances. We’ve prepared well, and we’re confident our hard work will show on the turf,” captain Salima Tete shared upon her arrival.

India must secure a top-four finish among the six teams to advance to the semi-finals on November 19. The winners will then progress to the final, scheduled for November 20. This tournament marks the Indian women’s team’s first Asian competition under chief coach Harendra Singh, who took charge earlier this year.

“For the first time, international matches will be held in Bihar at the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy. I would like to thank the Bihar government, Hockey India, and all hockey fans for helping bring international matches to the state. Each team will come with the goal of winning the trophy, and we have spent the last five months preparing with the Asian Champions Trophy in mind. We identified areas for improvement, such as combinations and decision-making in the shooting circle, and have worked on them. I am confident that hockey fans will witness a new side of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team this time, and they won’t be disappointed,” added Harendra Singh.

    Recipe – Kavuni Arisi Murukku

This is a unique twist (Murukku gets its name from the twists) on the classic murukku (chakli), which is made with black rice. Many experts consider black rice (or kavunni arisi in Tamil) a superfood because of the presence of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant. Black rice is also rich in fibre and is a source of phytonutrients that cleanse the body. This unique rice varietal adds a unique chocolate brown hue to this murukku:

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup black rice (Kavuni arisi)
    • 1/4 Cup gram flour
    • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
    • 2 tbsp ghee
    • 1/4 tbsp Asafoetida
    • 1 tbsp White sesame seeds
    • Oil for deep frying
    • Salt to taste
    • Water as required

    Method:

    • Wash the black rice. Soak the rice for at least two hours.
    • Drain water and spread it on a cloth; let it dry completely.
    • Grind the black rice to a fine powder in a mixer.
    • Add the powdered black rice, gram flour, asafoetida, sesame seeds, red chilli powder, salt and ghee in a bowl and mix well.
    • Add water as required, and knead it to make a soft dough; add oil and knead again.
    • Use a murukku mould, fill the prepared dough in and press to get the perfect shape as you squeeze it into hot oil.
    • Deep fry till crisp on medium hot oil and flip over to fry both sides evenly.
    •  Drain out the extra oil with tissue paper once it’s fried to perfection.Store in an airtight container once it cools down.

    Recipe – Ribbon Pakoda

Takes its name from the unique ribbon shape (that you can achieve with the right mould).

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup gram flour
    • 1 cup rice flour
    • 1 tsp asafoetida
    • 3/4 tbsp red chilli powder
    • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (white)
    • 1 tbsp melted butter
    • 1 tbsp oil
    • Salt and water – to taste
    • Oil For deep frying

    Method:

    • Mix the rice flour, gram flour, red chilli powder, melted butter, oil, asafoetida and salt in a bowl, and mix well.
    • Keep adding small quantities of water to make a non-sticky dough.
    • Use a ribbon pakoda mould. Fill the dough in the mould and press the dough into hot oil in a circular motion to form a single layer.
    • Flip the pakoda to fry both sides evenly.
    • Drain out the extra oil with tissue paper once it’s fried to perfection.
    • Store in an airtight container once it cools down.

    Recipe – Karuvapellai Murukku

I first came across this interesting twist to the murukku at Anandas in Coimbatore, one of the city’s most popular vegetarian restaurants and sweet shops. Anandas has an array of interesting savouries including a beetroot murukku with its red velvet hues and the karuvapellai (curry leaf) version that incorporates the flavours and goodness of curry leaf.

  • Study Reveals Over 77 Percent Of Indian Children Lack WHO-Suggested Dietary Diversity

Study Reveals Over 77 Percent Of Indian Children Lack WHO-Suggested Dietary Diversity

About 77 per cent of children in India aged 6-23 months lack diversity in diet as suggested by the WHO, with the country’s central region showing the highest prevalence of minimum dietary failure, a study has found. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh reported the highest levels of inadequate diversity in children’s diets — all above 80 per cent — while Sikkim and Meghalaya were the only two to report an under-50 per cent prevalence. The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests using the Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD) score to evaluate the quality of a child’s diet — it is considered to be diverse if it contains five or more food groups, including breastmilk, eggs, legumes and nuts, and fruits and vegetables.
Analysing National Family and Health Survey data from 2019-21 (NFHS-5), researchers, including those from the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, found that the country’s overall rate of minimum dietary diversity failure has dropped from 87.4 per cent, which was calculated using data from 2005-06 (NFHS-3). However, “our study shows that the prevalence of minimum dietary diversity failure remains high (above 75 per cent) in India,” the authors wrote in the study published in the National Medical Journal of India.
The team also looked at children’s dietary habits across various food groups like proteins and vitamins, comparing data from 2019-21 with that from 2005-06. The consumption of eggs registered an “impressive” rise, from around 5 per cent in NFHS-3 to over 17 per cent in NFHS-5 while that of legumes and nuts increased from nearly 14 per cent during 2005-06 to over 17 per cent during 2019-21. “The consumption of vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables increased by 7.3 percentage points, whereas the consumption of fruits and vegetables increased by 13 percentage points over the same time. For flesh foods, the consumption increased by 4 percentage points,” the authors wrote.
However, the consumption of breastmilk and dairy products was found to drop from 87 per cent in NFHS-3 to 85 per cent in NFHS-5 and 54 per cent to 52 per cent, respectively. The authors also found that the children of illiterate and rural-residing mothers having no exposure to mass media, those born first and not exposed to counselling and health check-ups at Anganwadi or Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centres were more likely to be consuming diets deficient in diversity. Anaemic children and those having a low birth weight were also found to have a higher chance of consuming a non-diverse diet.
To tackle the issue of inadequate diversity in children’s diets, the authors called for a holistic approach from the government, including an improved public distribution system, intensified ICDS programme, use of social media and nutrition counselling through local self-governance. • Report Suggests Indian Dietary Practices Could Hold Key To Mitigating Climate Change

Report Suggests Indian Dietary Practices Could Hold Key To Mitigating Climate Change

Indian sustainable eating habits such as limiting food waste, prioritising vegetarian diets, and consuming locally sourced foods can help address global climate change, a pressing issue worldwide, according to a report. A recent Living Planet Report by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) showed that food consumption patterns followed by Indians are the most climate-friendly among the G20 nations. It stated that if people in other countries adopt the Indian diet, the world would need 0.84 per cent of the Earth to support food production by 2050. The food system is one of the major contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Shravani Mali, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, a data analytics company, said India has intensified the vegan movement, especially in metropolitan cities in recent years. “The country’s current food consumption practices, emphasise plant-based diets and climate-resilient crops such as millets, which require fewer resources and generate lower emissions compared to meat-heavy diets,” Mali said, adding that, “The transition is also connected to a wider focus on sustainability”.

Citing a recent consumer survey by GlobalData, Mali said that 79 per cent of Indians said that the sustainable or environmentally friendly feature is essential while purchasing food and drinks. “Traditional Indian diets primarily consist of lentils, grains, and vegetables. These traditional diets, which place an emphasis on seasonal and local produce, are becoming more popular as environmental issues gain more attention. Consequently, with increasing awareness, consumers will look forward to curtailing environmental burdens by adopting traditional dietary practices that prioritise plant-based foods,” Mali said.

Deepak Nautiyal, Consumer and Retail Commercial Director, APAC and Middle East at GlobalData,  lauded the government for introducing several initiatives to promote environmentally sustainable practices in the country. He cited the National Millet Campaign and the International Year of Millets (2023) campaigns rolled out by the government to boost the production and consumption of millets. Millets are an environmentally sustainable source of food and nutrition. In addition, the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) also aims to improve climate-resilient farming. Mali said adopting climate-friendly diets, especially Indian sustainable eating habits can be key to address critical global environmental and health challenges.

World News | Continue Promoting Yoga Globally for Healthy Lifestyle, Says Indian Diplomat

Singapore, Oct 19 (PTI) India has been a steadfast promoter of yoga globally and individual and institutional efforts should continue to promote yoga worldwide as a healthy form of living, a top Indian diplomat said here on Saturday.

Addressing an international conference on ‘Comprehensive Wellness Strategy’ by a Singapore-based Indian-origin yoga institute, Deputy High Commissioner of India Pooja Tillu called on the delegates to “continue embracing yoga practice as a guiding light that will bring us together as a global family.”

The government of India has been a steadfast promoter of yoga globally and this was evidenced with the United Nations declaring International Day of Yoga on June 21, a proposal that won the support of 177 countries, Tillu said at the conference attended by some 300 delegates from the region.

“The conference theme, ‘Comprehensive Wellness Strategy’ resonates deeply with our shared mission to integrate holistic practices into a moral lifestyle as we navigate an increasingly face-paced world,” the diplomat said.

The two-day conference is organised by a leading yoga institute in Singapore, Vyasa Yoga SG, as part of its Silver Jubilee celebration this month.

Founded in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana or S-VYASA of Bangalore, Vyasa Yoga SG has been conducting yoga and holistic health practices for over two decades here.

“It has been a remarkable 25-year journey in Singapore. Empowering thousands, the institute offers scientific, research-based yoga training and therapy, boasting a family of 3,000 certified yoga instructors and 500 yogi health therapists,” said Vyasa Yoga SG’s founder Manoj Thakur, who leads a growing number of yoga-hosting schools in Singapore and around the region.

Elaborating on sharing yoga practices across the region, Thakur shared that Vyasa Yoga SG was collaborating with a number of institutions out of Singapore, one such being the Vietnam Yoga Academy which trains about 1,000 yoga teachers and coaches every year.

The Academy’s Hanoi-based academy lead, Dang Hung, added that yoga was becoming popular among Vietnamese people especially for its health benefits and stress-free lifestyle.

There are about five million yoga enthusiasts in Vietnam with an estimated 5,00,000 people taking on this healthcare practice every year, according to 42-year-old Academy teacher said.

This Indian man runs Rs 1.10 lakh crore business empire, leads a humble lifestyle, has no mobile phone, owns a car worth only Rs…, not Jimmy Tata
    Rama Murthy Thyagarajan

New Delhi: The founder of the Shriram Group Rama Murthy Thyagarajan is a billionaire who heads a whopping Rs 1.10 lakh crore business empire. Despite being filthy rich, Rama leads a very simple and normal life. He lives in a modest house, drives a simple car worth Rs 6 lakh, and also avoids using a mobile phone. Today, in this article, we will delve into his lifestyle and understand how one can lead a simple lifestyle despite being super wealthy.

    Rama Murthy Thyagarajan Journey:

Rama Murthy Thyagarajan founded the Shriram Group in the 1960s. The group which started as a small chit fund company slowly became of the biggest financial giants, with Shriram Finance alone reaching a market valuation of Rs 1.10 lakh crores. Rama, who earlier used to work in an insurance company, put all his expertise in shaping his new business. He avoided making the same mistakes that other traditional banks were making for a long period. He noticed that traditional banks were often unwilling to serve certain groups, such as truck drivers and low-income earners.

Rama bridged this gap and decided to concentrate on offering loans to these overlooked communities, especially financing commercial vehicles. Soon, his strategy paid off, and the company quickly expanded by meeting the needs of people who had few other options for financial assistance. His business mantra was not to serve the rich but to understand the problems of common man and also provide solutions.

    Rama Murthy Thyagarajan Lifestyle:

Rama Murthy Thyagarajan leads a very simple and modest lifestyle. Even after having so much wealth, he prefers to stay away from limelight. People close to him state that he keeps him away from all forms of luxury. He once sold his stake in a USD 750 million company, choosing to donate the money to a trust. This decision highlighted his commitment to philanthropy and his dedication to keeping his life grounded in simplicity rather than luxury.

Rama’s story shows that success is not always the material wealth you own but also the positive impact you are making. His life is a testament to humility, integrity, and the importance of thinking beyond traditional boundaries, offering an inspiring example for others to follow.
