  • Family’s healthy lifestyle changes inspire new business in Oberlin

Family’s healthy lifestyle changes inspire new business in Oberlin

Dave Fetter is an unexpected champion of natural handmade soaps.

From the outset, you’ll notice his calloused hands and well-worn work boots, earned over nearly 30 years on the factory floor, according to a news release.

Fetter’s boots continue to earn their patina as he manages the construction of the 1,200-square-foot warehouse he’s opening next year in Oberlin with his wife, Michelle, the release said.

The couple’s business, Elegant of Essence, sells a curated range of natural, organic and zero-waste personal care and household products, according to the release.

“It’s hardly the type of product you’d expect Dave to sell, but he isn’t ashamed to promote the benefits of natural soap and biodegradable cleaning products at flea markets and craft fairs where they routinely sell out,” the release said.

Michelle Fetter, in search of a remedy for their daughter’s eczema, first came up with the idea to start Elegant of Essence in 2011.

She found that natural and organic soaps and personal care products helped her daughter, so she dedicated herself to learning more and educating others, according to the release.

“We lived in Florida at the time,”  Michelle Fetter said in the release. “The plastic waste and debris that collects on beaches and in the ocean is shocking.

“It hit me that the same products that improved our daughter’s skin condition, made with natural ingredients and without plastic packaging, also benefited wildlife and the environment.”

Dave Fetter’s kidney cancer diagnosis in 2020 underscored the importance of choosing personal care products and household cleaning products that do not contain hazardous ingredients, according to the release.

The Fetters adjusted their lifestyle and buying habits to keep their family safer and reduce exposure to chemicals that could impede Dave Fetter’s recovery, the release said.

Dave Fetter credits choosing natural and organic products for slowing the progression of his cancer.

Now in recovery, he and his wife are taking Elegant of Essence to the next stage with the opening of their Oberlin store.

They said in the release they are excited to help other families make simple, healthy lifestyle changes and avoid the harsh and potentially harmful chemicals in conventional personal care and household products.

“I’ve definitely seen a shift in recent years as consumers make healthier choices for their homes and bodies,” Michelle Fetter said. “Each person’s choices can make a difference.”

You can find Elegant of Essence at the Christmas Craft Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 at the New Russia Township Lodge, 46300 Butternut Ridge Road in New Russia Township.

Elegant of Essence also recently launched its online store nationwide at https://www.ElegantofEssence.com.

The Jewish Sport Report: Orthodox college football player Sam Salz is on a mission to inspire

This article was sent as a newsletter. Sign up for our weekly Jewish sports newsletter here.

Happy Friday! In this week’s Jewish Sport Report, we profile Orthodox college football player Sam Salz, invite you to an exciting Jewish sports event next month and share hall of fame updates across multiple sports.

    Let’s dive right in.

Inside Orthodox player Sam Salz’s historic college football debut — and his improbable path to the SEC

    Sam Salz

Sam Salz is in his third season with the Texas A&M football team after walking on in 2022. (Rob Havens/Aggieland Illustrated)

Before Nov. 16, Sam Salz had never played a snap of organized football. The 5-foot-6, 160-pound wide receiver grew up attending an Orthodox day school in Philadelphia that didn’t have a football team.

But last Saturday night, Salz took the field for the first time with the Texas A&M Aggies, the No. 15-ranked team in Division I and a decorated program that plays in the elite Southeastern Conference.

Salz walked me through his first taste of football, and what it meant to hear his name called for a play as the Aggies routed New Mexico State 38-3.

“There’s probably a Jewish kid, and maybe even especially an Orthodox kid, who wants to play football, or wants to play sports, and is sitting somewhere confused about what he should do, or who’s told that he’ll never be able to do it,” Salz said. “Even getting to see me run down on that field, successful play or not, could have given him all the hope that he wanted.”

    Halftime report

COOPERSTOWN CALLING? Longtime second baseman and former Team Israel player-turned-manager Ian Kinsler is on the 2025 MLB Hall of Fame ballot, making him the first Jewish player to make the ballot since Kevin Youkilis in 2019. Kinsler is a 4-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner and 2018 World Series champion. Getting on the ballot is itself an accomplishment — even if his chances at making it to Cooperstown alongside the likes of fellow first-balloteer Ichiro Suzuki appear slim.

DEFLATED. One prominent Jew who will definitely not be enshrined in a hall of fame in 2025 is New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who, according to ESPN, was not selected for the 2025 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Kraft, one of the league’s most influential owners and a six-time Super Bowl winner, failed to advance out of the hall’s nomination committee for the 13th time. Ralph Hay, a co-founder of the NFL, was chosen instead.

HONORED. More on halls of fame! Former NHL star Mathieu Schneider was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in New York last weekend. Schneider, who scored 223 goals across 21 seasons in the league, said being a Jewish pro athlete “meant an awful lot to me.”

LISTEN TO THIS. U.S. rugby bronze medalist Sarah Levy appeared on the Women of Reform Judaim’s “Just For This” podcast, which highlights women in leadership positions. Check out the interview here, and for a refresher, here’s our profile of Levy from this past summer.

HOLDING COURT. The Israel Tennis and Education Centers Foundation raised half a million dollars at a fundraiser Tuesday in New York City to benefit the organization’s work supporting Israeli children across socioeconomic and religious backgrounds. The ITEC, which has more than 200 courts across Israel, has expanded its work since Oct. 7, 2023.

Join us for an online event to mark the 75th anniversary of a remarkable Jewish basketball championship

    Event graphic

On Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. ET, I will sit down (virtually) with Matthew Goodman, author of “The City Game: Triumph, Scandal, and a Legendary Basketball Team,” to discuss the 75th anniversary of the City College of New York’s extraordinary 1949-50 basketball championship — and the point-shaving scandal that rocked the sport in its aftermath.

The CUNY Beavers, a team made up entirely of Jewish and African-American players at a time when the NBA was still segregated, became the only team in history to win the NIT and NCAA tournaments in the same year.

Dubai Fitness Challenge unveils vibrant 30-day calendar designed to inspire the community to pursue an active lifestyle – Sports – Other

The eighth edition of the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) will kick off on 26 October 2024 with a stunning array of fitness activities and experiences around the city designed to widen public participation and motivate more people to switch to an active lifestyle. Launched in 2017 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, the hugely popular initiative showcases Dubai’s sustained efforts to be recognised as the world’s most active city.

The DFC seeks to inspire the community as one to aim for incremental fitness goals and a healthier lifestyle by committing to 30 minutes of daily physical activity over a period of 30 days.  Starting Saturday, 26 October 2024, Dubai will transform into one sprawling gym hosting 30 action-packed days of fitness, fun and community activities and events to enable everyone to realise the 30×30 goals.

Running until Sunday, 24 November, DFC 2024 promises an unparalleled experience for everyone, regardless of age or ability. This year’s programme features an expanded range of workout options at fitness villages and community hubs across the city, in-person classes combining classic fitness trends as well as the latest fads, and mega events at iconic Dubai locations to inspire and get people moving. As always, the Dubai Run, presented by Mai Dubai, is among the major highlights this year too. Registrations are now open for this monumental event that turns Sheikh Zayed Road into a massive running track. Dubai Run participants can opt for a 10-km challenge or a more relaxed 5-km route catering to all fitness levels. The event marks the grand finale of the DFC.

His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC), said: “Dubai Fitness Challenge embodies our city’s deep-rooted commitment to fostering a healthier, more vibrant community. It goes beyond the daily 30 minutes of exercise – it’s about inspiring a lifelong pursuit of well-being. Each year, we turn Dubai into a vast fitness arena, where residents and visitors alike unite with energy and determination to reach new heights in their personal fitness journeys. This initiative encourages everyone – from individuals to families and entire communities – to break boundaries, discover new passions, and redefine what it means to live an active life. Our mission is to ensure that every person, regardless of age or ability, has access to opportunities that promote health, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment. We look forward to seeing this year’s challenge set new milestones, bringing us closer to our goal of a healthier and more active Dubai.”

Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE) said: “Since its inception in 2017, Dubai Fitness Challenge has impacted millions by encouraging a healthier, more active lifestyle. Each edition, we see the incredible energy of Dubai come alive, with people from all walks of life uniting around a common goal: to make fitness and wellness an everyday priority. This year promises to be the most community-focused yet, with an even broader array of fitness experiences and events designed to bring families, friends, and colleagues together in a collective movement towards improved health and wellness.
