    Kerala-based chocolate brand Paul And Mike recently made India proud on the world stage. It made history by becoming the first Indian brand to win a Gold at the International Chocolate Awards. In the category of ‘Milk chocolate enrobed whole fruit,’ Paul and Mike’s Milk Chocolate Coated Salted Capers came first. The brand also won a bronze in the category of ‘Milk chocolate bars with inclusions or pieces’ for its Pistachios & Idukki Cardamom Chocolate. The gold-winning chocolate represents an interesting convergence of the eastern and western regions of India.     How Was The Award-Winning Chocolate Crafted?

    The chocolate makers sourced freshly harvested organic capers of the smallest size (Lilliput capers). The company says that the capers “taste like olives but more lemony with notes of mustard and pepper.” These are sent to a factory to be placed in a salt solution. The salt used for the same is also special. It is sourced from the salt pans of Tuticorin. Paul and Mike’s collaborator, Ishka farms, uses a custom recipe for salted capers to nail the balance of tangy and salty notes. The salted capers are then coated with in-house milk chocolate. “As you bite into the crunchy caper and the chocolate melts on your tongue, you get a burst of flavours ranging from umami to salty to acidic to chocolatey and a long finish and aftertaste,” the company explains.

    What is the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program?

    On Monday, the NFL announced the Class of 2025 athletes who will be involved in the league’s International Player Pathway program.

    What is the NFL IPP program?

    The NFL established the IPP program in 2017 as a way for foreign athletes to have an opportunity to potentially play in the league. The athletes selected typically come from other sporting backgrounds like rugby, Gaelic football, basketball, and track and field. The program identifies global talent and places selected athletes in a 10-week training camp, which will take place in Florida at IMG Academy in January. There, they can develop their football skills through on-field and classroom sessions, and have a chance to earn a spot on an NFL roster.

    After the training camp, the athletes will showcase their skills in front of several NFL scouts as part of the University of South Florida’s Pro Day in March, ahead of the next year’s draft. Players will also be eligible to be selected as free agents if they are not selected in the draft.

    Each NFL team is given one roster exemption for a qualifying international player from the start of its offseason program through the 53-man roster cut deadline. After that, the qualifying players can be signed to a 17th practice squad roster spot reserved for international athletes across all teams.

    “Focusing on our global football development efforts and fostering international talent is crucial to growing our game globally,” said NFL executive vice president of international, events, and club business Peter O’Reilly. “The IPP program offers life-changing opportunities for international talent, and we look forward to following their progress in the weeks and months ahead.”

    Since its establishment in 2017, 41 international players have joined the NFL, with 23 currently on an NFL team and six on an active roster, including Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, from Australia, who started out as a rugby player.

    “The Class of 2025 is an exciting one, and we are delighted to welcome these talented athletes from around the world to the International Player Pathway program,” O’Reilly said.

    This year’s class includes Olympic discus throw champion Roje Stona, who won the gold medal in a throwing event in Paris this year for Jamaica, as well as rugby union players Jordan Petaia from Australia, Dante Barnett and Mapalo Mwansa from the UK, and Aaron Sexton from Ireland.

    Some international kickers and punters will also join the Class of 2025 in the coming weeks.

    IOC Rejects Idea of International Federations Paying Prize Money To Olympic Gold Medalists

    The International Olympic Committee (IOC) firmly let its stance be known regarding international federations paying Olympic prize money during the first of three days of its Executive Board meeting on Tuesday.

    For the 2024 Paris Olympics, World Athletics became the first global federation to award each of its gold medalists with prize money, offering $50,000 to each event winner.

    Normally, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and national federations award prize money to their athletes.

    The IOC Board made it clear their disapproval of the move, and the idea of it being something that’s carried forward, during the meeting.

    Another layer to this is the fact that World Athletics is led by President Sebastian Coe, who is one of seven candidates to succeed Thomas Bach as IOC President early next year.

    IOC spokesperson Mark Adams summed up the discussion during a post-meeting news conference:

    “There was a large amount of agreement on the topic, I might even say unanimity, and it was a question, it was said, of principle, efficiency and distribution within the Olympic Movement,” Adams said.

    “As was said by the Executive Board in June, athletes are in teams of their National Olympic Committees and the NOCs prepare them, ands they should reward them – and, also a reminder, by the way, – this has been done for many decades. Many NOCs do this; the President [Thomas Bach], in fact, gave his own example. He received prize money when he won his gold medal in 1976, so it’s not new.”

    Adams went on to say that given the differences between countries and how they compensate their athletes for Olympic success, each National Olympic Committee knows “the best way to reward the athletes from their teams, in the national context.”

    He added that the biggest reason why the IOC is against international federations awarding prize money is the idea of “fairness,” detailing how, if everyone used the 2024 World Athletics model, it would “downgrade the Games to an elitist event.”

    “But perhaps, I think it was agreed by everyone, the best argument, the biggest argument is one of fairness. And here we have some quite good figures: the Olympic Games Paris overall, as you probably know, 91 NOCs won medals. If all the medalists – athletes and teams of all the sports – were rewarded, it would be about 1,000 athletes and teams who would benefit,” Adams said.

    “They mostly come from what you might call the well-funded, the privileged National Olympic Committees: 65% of the individual medalists and teams winning medals are from 15 NOCs who were on top of the medal tally.

    “And if you count the individual athletes who win medals in the team events as well, the percentage of athletes benefitting from such a prize money model would come from 15 privileged NOCs.

    “This means that the prize money for them would only increase the existing inequalities even further. And, of course, I need hardly say it was felt by the Executive Board that this goes against the mission of the International Olympic Committee, and it could very easily downgrade the Olympic Games to an elitist event with competition among only less than 10% of the 206 NOCs.”

    As noted by The Sports Examiner‘s Rich Perelman, the World Athletics model wouldn’t work for too many federations, as only a select few would be able to afford to pay Olympic prize money, with the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) among those who don’t even pay prize money for their own World Championships.

    This is among the issues Coe will have to tackle in late January when he makes his case for IOC President before the election in March.

    Samantha Lewis has been following the Matildas since well before they were cool and has dug deep into her notebooks to pull out a close look at their history of clashes with Brazil. The blue touch paper was lit on the rivalry during the Women’s World Cup 2007 when Australia reached the quarter-finals for the first time (spoiler alert: Brazil were runners-up).

    Their first opponents in the knockout stage were Brazil: a team who have since become one of the Matildas’ longest-standing rivals, and who were led, back then, by the great Marta, who would go on to win the tournament’s Golden Boot and MVP awards.

    Australia lost that game 3-2 – not a boilover, by any stretch – with the core of that team going on to become the country’s first Asian Champions just three years later.

    Emily Van Egmond becomes the fourth player to make 150 appearances for the Matildas, drawing equal with Lisa De Vanna and now one cap behind Cheryl Salisbury. Winonah Heatley is very much at the other end of her career and will start after a debut against Germany last month amid a very defensive looking line up.

Clare Polkinghorne will line up for the national side for the 168th time – a record number of caps for an Australian footballer – since making her debut in 2006.

    Hello and welcome to live coverage of the women’s international friendly between the Matildas and Brazil at Suncorp Stadium. This is the beginning of a two-match series between the highly-ranked teams, with the second clash to come on Sunday, as Australia return to Brisbane for the first time since the Women’s World Cup last year.

    The Matildas and Brazil took different paths through the global showcase as the hosts reached the semi-finals and the visitors were knocked out at the group stage, though they have been heading in opposite directions since then. Brazil have risen to No 8 in the Fifa rankings after their silver medal at the Paris Games, while Australia have slumped to No 15 – their lowest ranking since 2007 – in part due to a disappointing Olympic campaign.

    Australia are taking tentative steps towards regeneration since the departure of coach Tony Gustavsson and are likely to field a dash of the old mixed with the new tonight, especially with several stars sitting out. Mary Fowler has joined Cortnee Vine in taking a break from the Matilda’s four-match home series, while captain Sam Kerr is of course still recovering from an ACL injury.

    Football Australia revealed about two hours ago that only 1,000 tickets remain for the friendly at Suncorp Stadium, so if you’re still intending to try your luck at the gate I suggest you run, don’t walk. The likely sell-out will make it the 15th home match in a row where the doors are shut behind the Matildas. A competitive showing, perhaps even a victory, feels increasingly critical to ensuring the sheen remains on the women’s team.

    United States women’s goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher has announced her retirement from international soccer at the age of 36, ending an 11-year career in which she won two World Cups and the Olympic gold medal.

    Naeher’s final trip with the USWNT will see her participate in the upcoming friendlies against England in London on November 30 followed by a match against the Netherlands in The Hague on December 3.

    Naeher, who made her senior debut in December 2014 and has 113 caps so far, will retire as the only goalkeeper in women’s soccer history to earn a shutout in a World Cup final and an Olympic gold medal game.

    The goalkeeper, who won the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the 2024 Olympics with USWNT, said playing for the national side has been the “greatest honor”.

    “When I began this journey, I never could have imagined where it would take me, and now I find myself so grateful for all the incredible teammates that I have shared the field with; teammates that have turned into lifelong friends,” Naeher said in a statement shared by U.S. Soccer.

    “This has been a special team to be a part of and I am beyond proud of what we have achieved both on and off the field,” she added.

    “The memories I have made over the years will last me a lifetime. I know one chapter is ending, but I am so excited to continue to see the growth of this team going forward and what more they can accomplish.”

    One Of The Greatest Goalkeepers

    U.S. Soccer applauded Naeher for her contribution to the team, describing her as one of the greatest keepers of all time after she recorded 12 clean sheets and allowed only a dozen goals in 22 starts at the World Cup and Olympics.

    “Naeher’s performances in the last four world championships – the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2021 and 2024 Olympics — firmly sealed her status as one of the greatest ever to play the position,” the statement said.

    “Her surreal calmness under pressure, distribution from the back, overall consistency in the net and a litany of epic saves in the biggest of moments have cemented her forever in USWNT lore.”

    U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher announced her retirement from international soccer Monday, ahead of the team’s two European friendlies against England and the Netherlands. She said the European matches will be her last.

    A 2019 World Cup winner and gold medalist at this summer’s Paris Olympics, she will continue playing for the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL. She re-signed with Chicago in September to play through the 2025 season, which will be her 10th season with the club.

    For the USWNT, however, it’s the end of a major goalkeeping era. Naeher’s career stands comfortably in the top three amongst other World Cup winners Briana Scurry and Hope Solo.

    “Every tear shed in the challenging times and disappointments made every smile and celebration in the moments of success that much more joyful,” Naeher wrote Monday in her announcement on social media. “This has been a special team to be a part of and I am beyond proud of what we have achieved both on and off the field.”

    Naeher made her debut a decade ago in December 2014, and after stints as the primary backup goalkeeper for the 2015 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, she took over the no. 1 spot following that quarterfinal exit. Ahead of what could be her two final games for the United States, she holds a record 88 wins, 14 draws and only six losses through 113 appearances.

    “Having the opportunity to be a part of the USWNT for the last 15 years has been the greatest honor,” she wrote. “When I began this journey, I never could have imagined where it would take me.”

    She earned her 100th cap earlier this year during the W Gold Cup and cemented her status not just as someone who could save penalty kicks, but convert them as well. In the W Gold Cup semifinal against Canada, she buried her attempt from the spot but also saved three of Canada’s attempts — marking her as the only USWNT goalkeeper to make three saves in a PK shootout. She’d repeat the same double later that spring, against Canada, during the SheBelieves Cup.

    At the Olympics this summer, she once again stepped up to help propel the USWNT to their gold medal victory, including a poster-worthy save against Brazil in the closing moments of the gold cup game at Parc des Princes. Off the field, she bonded with the forward line of Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith and Mal Swanson (also known as “Triple Espresso”) who pulled her out of her shell.
