    New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorin has explained why he simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity to manage the club.

    Amorim took charge at Old Trafford during the international break after signing a two-and-a-half-year deal, replacing Erik ten Hag and taking the reins from interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy. 

    The Portuguese has been in Manchester this week as he adapts to his new job, which is as head coach of the Red Devils following his departure from Sporting Lisbon in his homeland.

    Amorin, widely regarded as one of Europe’s top coaches, took charge of his first training session on Monday.

    The 39-year-old received some criticism in Portugal for ‘abandoning’ Sporting during the season and he has spoken about the decision in an interview with United legend Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

    ‘It was really hard but I had to do it, Amorin told Neville. I already had conversations with clubs so was quite normal but what I felt at the time, I felt that this is my place.’

    The comment drew a smile from Neville, who spent his entire playing career at United.

    ‘I think it was the right club in the right moment for me, Amorin continued. ‘I felt that this is my place. I think it was the right club in the right moment for me.   

    ‘It was very tough to leave Sporting. Because in the middle of the season, you can say everything, it’s Manchester United. It’s everything, it’s the moment, it’s the club that I want. 

    ‘But you are leaving your guys in middle of the season. It was really hard but I had to do it and I was so happy, of course. 

    ‘You can see it in every interaction that I have but I also felt in the first moment it was a little bit overwhelming. But after five minutes you start thinking about the club, the team, the players, how to play…. so it was quite fun.’

    Amorim has arrived as ‘head coach’, the first in United’s history, and it is part of an overhaul to the structure led by CEO Omar Berrada, director of football Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

    While he will, over time, have the chance to bring his own players in, internally the feeling at United is that there are players at the club that can produce far more than they have shown so far. 

    Amorin led Sporting to two domestic titles since taking charge in 2020 and left the club in the midst of what was on course to be another successful campaign.

    Sporting sit six points clear at the top of the Portuguese top flight and second in the 36-team Champions League table.

    Amorin will begin his tenure with a trip to Ipswich, who will have newfound confidence after their shock 2-1 win at Tottenham last time out. 

    United will start the weekend 13th in the Premier League table with just 15 points from their first 11 fixtures this season.

    After taking on Ipswich, the Red Devils will host Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League four days later.

    United have taken six points from a possible 12 in Europe so far this term, having drawn against Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce, before beating PAOK Salonika.

    Cocktail enthusiasts in Mumbai can get the chance to try its spectacular creations, as Handshake is popping up at Slink & Bardot for two nights only this week. Ahead of their trip, we caught up with two experts from the Handshake team: Javier Rodriguez (Head Bartender) and Daniela Jardon (Laboratory Manager at Handshake). The duo are set to dazzle the city with four signature cocktails and pair them with Slink & Bardot’s global flavours. Here are edited excerpts from our interview with them:

    1. How does Handshake’s cocktail menu celebrate Mexican spirits like tequila and mezcal?

    Our menu is all about honouring Mexican roots, especially with tequila and mezcal. We showcase these spirits’ unique flavours by pairing them with ingredients that highlight their character and using techniques that bring out their depth. Every cocktail tells a story, and it’s our way of sharing a taste of Mexico.

    2. There’s been a growing interest in agave-based spirits around the world. What do you think about this trend?

    It’s amazing to see agave spirits getting the recognition they deserve. They’re incredibly complex and versatile, and people around the world are starting to appreciate that. This trend is connecting drinkers globally to Mexican culture and the craftsmanship behind each bottle.

    3. Some of Handshake’s cocktails reportedly take up to 48 hours to prepare. What can you tell us about your processes and techniques?

    Yes, a few of our cocktails do take up to 48 hours to come together! It’s because we use techniques like infusions and clarifications, which take time but really elevate the flavours. The longer process allows the ingredients to meld perfectly, so when it reaches your glass, it’s a whole new experience.

    4. Can you share any unusual ingredients that you’ve recently experimented with in your cocktails?

    Lately, we’ve been having fun with ingredients like brown butter and mushrooms. They add depth and richness that you might not expect in a cocktail, but the response has been great! Guests are loving the bold flavours and unique twists.

    5. Your speakeasy has been ranked number one in the world. How do you plan to continue to push boundaries?

    We’re incredibly grateful for the recognition-it means a lot. But it also inspires us to keep innovating. We’re constantly experimenting with new techniques and flavour combinations, always with a nod to the classics. It’s about delivering a unique experience every time, for every guest.

    6. Looking ahead, how do you see the future of Mexican mixology evolving, both locally and on the international stage?

    Mexican mixology is definitely on the rise. The world’s interest in agave spirits and traditional Mexican techniques means we’ll see a lot more innovation and respect for our craft. I think it’ll bring Mexican bartending to new heights globally.

    Handshake will be popping up at Slink & Bardot on November 14 and 15, 9 pm onwards. Guests can taste some of their most celebrated creations, including the Olive Oil Gimlet, the Mexi-Thai, The Orange Blossom and The Jasmine cocktails.

    However, away from the conflict between the two Spanish teams, UFC legend and esteemed broadcaster Daniel Cormier has challenged Holloway to a soccer match after his fight.

    In response, Holloway said: “Can you run? Bro, you look like a soccer ball. You look tired, bro, you look like [you’re] 300 lbs.”

    And yet, with Topuria hoping for his next outing to land in Madrid, Spain, the Spaniard has ultimately refused to agree to the Australian’s terms.

    Holloway, too, is unlikely to face Volkanovski, with the fan-favorite instead looking set to jump back up to 155 lbs.

    Eddie Howe has hit back at Paul Mitchell’s claims about Newcastle’s transfer strategy ‘not being fit for purpose’, as the head coach declared: ‘We can hold our heads up very high.’

    During his first press conference since Mitchell’s controversial interview last week, Howe revealed the pair have not spoken in the nine days since and there have been no discussions ahead of the January window. He also said it would not help the current situation if he was to comment on other aspects of Mitchell’s interview.

    But Howe was prepared to respond to the claims made by the new sporting director about the club overpaying for players and the remark about their approach not being fit for purpose, and he gave a strenuous defence.

    ‘I think a few things on that,’ began Howe. ‘I’m very, very proud of every single player that we signed in that period. It is very easy to look back at any transfer window and make a judgement on the players you have signed three years down the line. But you have to go back to the situation when we were in those moments, in the relegation zone and trying to recruit players. That is not an easy thing to do.

    ‘You’re also recruiting not just for the short term, but for the long term. When you look back, that work was good. Our objective was to stay in the league. I’m very, very proud of the body of work that we did and the players that we have now from the legacy of those transfer windows. We love them to bits. So I think it’s about when you’re in that moment and the decisions that you made. I think everyone can hold their heads up very high.’

    He added: ‘Those signings, obviously I played a huge part in, and I took ownership of all those signings. I said that even if they’re good or bad, I will take ownership of that because, ultimately, I was always the final decision-maker on those signings, and I was very proud to sign those players.

    ‘I think they have been brilliant signings for the where we were and the long-term future of the club, and I really believe in them and I still do. You’ve asked me a question and I’ll always try and answer it if I can openly and honestly. I’d certainly like to find a few more of them if I could.’

    What did Mitchell mean when he said there was no clear transfer strategy at the club?

    ‘I think that is for Paul to answer,’ said Howe. ‘I don’t think I can answer for him. The scouting structure was there, and whatever you think about the structures, I thought the results were very good.’

    When pressed on Mitchell’s claims that he only played a ‘supporting role’ during the summer transfer window after arriving in early July, Howe said: ‘I don’t think it’s right for me to make individual comments in reply to Paul’s press conference. I don’t think that will help our current situation. It’s best for me to focus on the future.’

    Has Howe spoken to Mitchell since?

    ‘No, I’ve had no contact from Paul,’ he said. ‘But I don’t think that’s unusual. We’ve got different jobs to do. I’m focusing on the football and the team, and he’s obviously focusing on his role.’

    But Howe did revisit the subject of his and the club’s transfer dealings and the need to react to the team’s situation at that particular time.

    ‘We were in a relegation battle, so yes a couple of those signings were more short term in that moment, because you needed instant results,’ he added. ‘Relegation was not something we could contemplate but always in the back of my mind, with every signing I tried to make, it’s always about yes, can they impact the team now, but will they impact the team in the right way in the future?

    ‘Sometimes, there’s a big positional need for the here and now and sometimes you’re buying a player and thinking in a year’s time he could be a regular starter for us. Those are things that go onto it. 

    ‘It’s never as clear or as easy as everyone thinks, but the key thing now is the future and making sure we get future windows right, because ultimately that is the most important thing at any club, for you to be successful you have to recruit well.’

    In recent years, Packer has said he is now the ‘happiest’ he’s been, after shedding 25kg in 75 days and ditching the seven mood-altering drugs he was taking to help with his mental health. 

    ‘I’m roughly 130kg now and want to be back to 100kg by the end of 2022. I want to swim with my kids at Bondi when we’re all in Sydney together next year and be 100kg,’ he told The Weekend Australian from his home in in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at the time. 

    The businessman said he quit the antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs he was prescribed in March, and is now looking to ‘rehabilitate’ his reputation in Australia.

    The book also outlines some of the darkest moments of his life and how he went from inheriting a fortune to battling anxiety and depression; three times, he has come back from nervous breakdowns.

    There were multiple contributing factors that combined to his downward spiral. 

    Scandals marred his jet-set lifestyle, from a deal that saw him under scrutiny based on his political ties in Israel to a legal quagmire in China when officials from Crown Resorts, where he served as director, were detained in relation to illegal gambling charges.

    Even his Tinseltown dreams were tainted – with the $100 million collapse of his production company RatPac with Hollywood producer Brett Ratner.

    In the midst of his despair, Packer reveals he turned to old friend Warren Beatty, and spent years living in the Hollywood star’s guest house, eventually calling him ‘Dad’ – though he’s keen to point out that means no disrespect to his later father, Kerry, who engineered so much of the family’s runaway business success.

    Packer counts numerous household names among his friends – from Robert de Niro to Leonardo DiCaprio – and since his youth was firmly entrenched in the celebrity set, even flirting with Scientology for a time before distancing himself from the church, in the vein of so many box-office actors and actresses.

    The book describes Packer’s personal torment, drink and mental issues, which the billionaire describes as ‘very scary.’ 

    He says he came to the realization his problems were only ‘getting worse’ – causing him to be ‘desperately worried,’ according to the extract in The Australian.

    Beatty is notorious for avoiding media interviews but he chose to sit down and talk about Packer for the book, a sign of how much he values and cares for the man. 

    The actor would be the one who helped Packer finally seek help, referring him to a top psychiatrist who immediately asked him: ‘Are you trying to kill yourself?’

    ‘I don’t know if I started crying, but I thought to myself, “I don’t want to have $1.4 billion of debt any more. Why am I doing this?”‘ Packer said at the time. 

    The father-of-three said he is now excited to begin his ‘third act’ and plans to ease back into public life in Australia.
