  • Long Island teen Connor Kasin dies after suffering medical episode during charity hockey game

Long Island teen Connor Kasin dies after suffering medical episode during charity hockey game

A Long Island teen has died after losing consciousness on the ice during a charity hockey game in honor of a fellow high school student who died in a car crash last year.

Connor Kasin, a 17-year-old senior at Massapequa High School, suffered a “medical event” and passed out on the ice during an intermission of the hockey game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage at around 9 p.m. on Saturday, according to News 12 Long Island.

Multiple “civilians” at the game rushed onto the ice and performed CPR on the teen while waiting for first responders, the Nassau County Police Department said in a press release.

Kasin was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the medical episode is still unknown.

Nassau police said they are still investigating the incident but noted that “no criminality suspected.”

Kasin played for the Sharks Elite Youth Hockey team when the medical episode occurred.

Massapequa High School announced the death of Kasin in a letter to students and families over the weekend.

“It is heartbreaking to report that Connor did not survive. His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor’s family and friends,” the letter said.

School officials said grief counseling will be available to students this week.

The teen collapsed during the charity match in honor of a Syosset graduate, Sabrina Navarett, who died in a car crash last year.

The game was held by a foundation in Navarett’s name to raise scholarship money and offer support to grieving parents whose children have passed.

Navaretta’s parents, John and Mara, released a statement on Kasin’s tragic death and offered their condolences to the hockey star’s family.

“There are no words to convey our heartbreak that we feel as last night was supposed to be a fun night. The community came together to celebrate Sabrina’s life and our family’s commitment to help with scholarship, dog rescue and assisting grieving parents,” John and Mara Navaretta said, according to CBS News.

“We would like the Kasin family to know our commitment to you. Connor was there to play for Sabrina and our family is here for you. Please take the time to grieve and be kind to yourself as the waves of grief can knock you over. John and I are here for you when you are ready.”

Kasin’s travel hockey team, the Sharks Elite Youth Hockey, also posted on Facebook Sunday confirming his death.

His coach, Jeff Tempone, called his player’s death “devastating.”

“He was a coach’s dream. You coach him and he loved the game. It’s missing someone. It’s missing someone very special,” Tempone told CBS News. “Probably in the best shape on the team, as far as being physical, and was just a great kid, highly coachable kid, always encouraging his teammates on the bench.”

“It was devastating. It’s a 17-year-old kid — has his whole life ahead of him,” Tempone said.

The South Island school representing New Zealand in flag football on the world stage

Her coach and teacher at St Andrew’s, Mason Shaw, has long been involved with American football in the Canterbury region.

“We started to get the ball rolling, but then we found out that the NFL competition was only going to be available to the North Island last year,” he told the Herald.

Last year’s inaugural event featured just Auckland and Wellington-based schools as part of its pilot programme, as Bader Intermediate took the crown.

Once the event was made available to other regions, it was all systems go for the St Andrew’s team.

Shaw said learning the sport as part of the curriculum and preparing for the regional and national tournaments spanned just over five months.

“The NFL provides you with a six-week curriculum to teach it, but you want to spend a little bit more time than that, so it was over a good couple of months,” he said.

“Then we prepared for the tournament in Christchurch for the regionals and then after we won regionals, it was another good month or so of preparation before nationals.”

St Andrew’s is one of 65 schools that has flag football as part of its curriculum, with the NFL doing its part to ensure accessibility isn’t an issue.

“We provide teachers with an online training course, which allows them in their own time to learn how to teach the game and we provide the equipment being flag belts and balls to the schools for free as well,” said NFL New Zealand and Australia general manager Charlotte Offord.

“We’ve tried to break down as many barriers to entering a new sport into their curriculum as possible and ultimately, having a prize at the end of the tunnel is obviously a good incentive for them to play the game.”

Quane shares her joy in adding another sporting feather to her cap – along with netball, basketball, touch, swimming and surf-lifesaving.

“I enjoy playing with the team and getting the opportunity to play the sport because I’ve never played before and it’s fun,” the Year 8 student said.

“At the start when I had my first few trials, it was confusing but now that I know the rules, it’s easy to understand and I know how to do it.”

While the ball skills involved in the sport are far from challenging, getting the students to understand teamwork has been the core teaching point for Shaw.

“It’s realising that even though you may not get the ball, everything that you do within the game is playing a role, so making sure they understand that you may not see the ball for the entirety of the game, but just because you ran the way you’re supposed to run made us win the game.”

This year’s tournament featured a visit from several former NFL players, including Super Bowl champion running back Marshawn Lynch, who Shaw admits made him more excited than some of the kids.

“It’s cool to see that NFL atmosphere and them bringing it to life, giving the kids here in New Zealand an opportunity to see that. I think they were impressed at what New Zealand has to offer in terms of its youth talent.

“It was awesome to see Marshawn and see Beastmode in real life. He’s a big dude, so it was cool to meet some of those athletes.”

Shaw’s noticed the NFL’s boom in popularity has spread across St Andrew’s – with students expressing an interest in fantasy football, the Madden video game and college football.

That extends to the rapid growth of flag football in the country, with Offord sharing a clear vision of the sport’s participation numbers across schools.

“At the moment we’re currently at just under 65 schools across the country. We’re aiming to be at over 100 schools by the end of this year and then we’ll be looking to scale back to over 200 schools by the end of next year.”

St Andrew’s College Preparatory School, they’re reaping the rewards of finding success in a new sport. But there’s still plenty to do over the next few months to prepare for the trip of a lifetime.

“There’s lots of paperwork for the board at the moment,” he said.

“It’s just trying to give them as much opportunity as possible, having some day camps and training and getting them mentally prepared of what it’s like to represent New Zealand, play in stadiums and seeing the Pro Bowl athletes.”

    FOOTBALL

Cape Coral 27, Gateway 6: The Seahawks are riding a seven-game winning streak going into Thursday’s regular-season finale, a hurricane-delayed matchup with Ida Baker. That will be a District 5A-10 game. Against Gateway on Friday, the Seahawks defense pitched a shutout. The Eagles’ only score came on a scoop-and-score return of a Cape fumble. For the Seahawks, Almarian Thomas caught a touchdown pass from Derrick Hooker, and returned a punt 57 yards for a score. Jermaine Skinner had a 12-yard TD run, and Caleb Cobb ran for 38 yards for a touchdown. Cape, leading District 5A-10 with a 2-0 mark, will seek to finish unbeaten in the district in Thursday’s rivalry game with Ida Baker. The Seahawks already have the district title sewed up thanks to beating second-place Charlotte earlier this season.

Island Coast 34, Ida Baker 20: The Crosstown Showdown went to the Gators (4-6) as Ida Baker fell to 0-10 with the Cape Coral game remaining. Elias Vargas rushed for 126 yards and two Bulldogs touchdowns.

Oasis 19, Westminster Academy 7: Oasis will play for the South title next week in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. After spotting the visitors a 7-3 lead, the Sharks’ defense stifled Westminster. Mason Sargis not only kicked two Sharks field goals, but made one of four Oasis interceptions and made five sacks of the Lions quarterback. Oasis forced six turnovers in all. Parker Smith scored on a 7-yard quarterback keeper as Oasis led 9-7 at the half. Frederick Harley Jr. scored early in the fourth quarter, and the Oasis defense made the 19-7 lead hold up. Oasis will travel to Fort Lauderdale to play NSU University High School at 7 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that game takes on the SSAA North winner for the state championship.

Cypress Lake 40, Mariner 7: Terrell Pasley scored on a 55-yard catch and run of a pass from Kaelan Davidson for the Tritons (2-7). Cypress Lake (5-5) won its last five games.

Charlotte 14, North Fort Myers 10: After leading 7-0 at intermission, the Red Knights allowed two second-half Seven Bullock touchdown catches to fall out of the District 5A-11 title chase. With the score 14-10, the Red Knights reached the Charlotte 13 in the final minute but could not score. Christian Weber ran for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Red Knights. North (6-3) faces a 7-2 Dunbar squad on Thursday, trying to secure a region wild-card playoff berth. The Tigers will be coming off a 28-21 victory against Fort Myers.

Bishop Verot 19, Miami Palmetto 14: The Verot defense throttled Palmetto until the final four minutes of the game, with six sacks and three interceptions. With college prospect Vikings quarterback Parker Smith out due to a shoulder injury, running back Deshon Jenkins ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Jenkins moved past the 1,000-yard for the season, with 321 of those yards in the last two games. Bishop Verot (6-3) faces undefeated Glades Central on Thursday for the District 2A-10 title.
