    All football matches scheduled to take place in Wales on Saturday 7 have been postponed due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring destructive winds and heavy rain, the Football Association of Wales has announced. 

    In a statement, the body confirmed that it had taken the extraordinary measure after advice from the Met Office, which has issued rare red weather warnings in the country. 

    Storm Darragh is sweeping in across the Atlantic, bringing with it 90mph winds and torrential downpours set to spark flooding and travel chaos in parts of Britain.

    ‘The Met Office has issued red, amber, and yellow weather warnings for the vast majority of Wales due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring damaging winds and heavy rain, causing significant disruption and danger to life,’ the statement from the FAW began.

    ‘It is not safe to drive in such weather, including travelling to and from football matches. Being outside in high winds increases the risk of injury and The Met Office advises people to stay indoors if possible.

    ‘Clubs have been advised to check for and secure any loose items around their grounds if it can be done safely. This includes bins, furniture, goalposts, and fences etc.

    ‘Potential postponements of fixtures on Friday 6 December and Sunday 8 December will be considered on a case-by-case basis, in line with each individual league’s policy.’

    Meteorologists said a period of ‘extremely strong winds’ will develop during the early hours of Saturday morning as the low pressure system moves across the Irish Sea. 

    The ‘significant disruption’ warning from 3am until 11am covers most of the coast of Wales including Cardiff and Swansea, as well as parts of Bristol and North Somerset. 

    That could mean that various Football League and non-league fixtures could also be affected, though at this point there has been announcement from the FA. 

    Championship side Bristol City welcome QPR to Ashton Gate in the early fixture on Saturday, while in the National League Yeovil Town are set to entertain Braintree Town at 3pm. 

    Forecasters told residents to ‘stay indoors if you can’ and ‘avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions – it is not safe to drive in these conditions’.

    Homeowners were urged to secure loose items outside their properties such as Christmas decorations, bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.

    The red alert, issued just after 10am on Friday, also urged people to ‘consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items’.

    Red warnings are a rare event, with the last one issued by the Met Office just under a year ago on January 21, 2024 for 99mph Storm Isha – and Friday is only the 19th time in records dating back to 2011 that a red warning has been imposed.

    The Met Office has also issued a 39-hour yellow wind warning for the whole of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, from 3pm today until 6am on Sunday.

    And an 18-hour amber wind warning along the UK’s west coast from South Ayrshire down to Cornwall, as well as in Northern Ireland, will run on Saturday from 3am to 9pm.

    Taiwanese officials withdraw Lin from the event in the UK to ‘avoid further harm’ to the Paris 2024 gold medallist.

    Taiwan’s Olympic boxing gold medallist Lin Yu-ting has pulled out of an international competition in the United Kingdom after the organisers questioned her gender eligibility, Taiwanese sports officials have said.

    Lin, who along with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was the target of a gender row at the Paris Olympics, was due to compete in the World Boxing Cup Finals in Sheffield starting on Wednesday.

    The new competition was organised by World Boxing, which was founded in 2023 and boasts about 55 members, including Taiwan.

    It was to be Lin’s first international competition since Paris, but she withdrew after World Boxing questioned her eligibility, Taiwan’s Sports Administration said in a statement on Wednesday.

    “She is female, meets all eligibility criteria, and successfully participated in the women’s boxing event [in Paris], winning a gold medal,” the statement said.

    “Unfortunately, as World Boxing is newly established and still navigating the development of its operational mechanisms, it lacks the clear regulatory policies of the IOC that ensure the protection of athletes’ rights,” it said, referring to the International Olympic Committee.

    “Additionally, World Boxing’s medical committee has yet to establish robust confidentiality procedures to safeguard the medical information submitted by Taiwan regarding Lin Yu-ting.”

    Lin had offered to undergo a “comprehensive medical examination locally” in the UK but World Boxing did not agree, the statement said.

    To avoid further “harm” to Lin, her coach and Taiwanese sports officials “decided to withdraw from this event proactively”.

    Lin had arrived in the UK a few days ago and pulled out of the event on Tuesday, Hsieh Chi-ying from the Sports Administration told the AFP news agency.

    Lin and Khelif were thrown out of last year’s world championships – which was run by the Russian-led International Boxing Association (IBA) – but they were cleared by the IOC to compete in Paris.

    IBA’s Kremlin-linked president, Umar Kremlev, claimed in a chaotic news conference that the two women had undergone “genetic testing that show that these are men”.

    The IOC leapt to the defence of both boxers, with president Thomas Bach saying they were born and raised as women, and have passports saying that. Neither is known to identify as transgender.

    Lin, who went on to win the gold in her women’s final, was dubbed “Taiwan’s daughter” by both local media and President William Lai Ching-te.

    Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai said the government would “actively strive to protect and secure” Lin’s rights to take part in future international competitions.

    In the lead-up to the Paris Olympics, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reportedly lost track of over 900 potential doping results, with at least 2,000 cases possibly impacted by flawed, missing, or erroneous data in the organization’s database, according to a report by the New York Times.

    Despite top WADA officials being alerted to these issues back in May, the situation has been shrouded in secrecy, remaining hidden even from the agency’s executive board members until NYT reporters uncovered photographic evidence of the presentation presented at a meeting.

    Database error rocks WADA

    The presentation urged immediate action after WADA’s legal team discovered the data problems and found themselves unable to confirm whether staff were adequately monitoring cases involving athletes potentially bound for the Olympics.

    While WADA has faced persistent challenges with its computer systems since its inception, the situation has worsened in the lead-up to the Paris Games. According to two officials and the PowerPoint presentation, a new internal database has been causing escalating issues, impacting a growing number of cases.

    Over 900 test results showing banned substances failed to appear in WADA’s database, which is used to track cases. An additional 1,700 cases had incomplete information, missing critical codes that link them to specific athletes’ samples. Furthermore, 750 cases lacked sufficient details to identify the athletes involved.

    WADA downplays the situation

    WADA has since acknowledged the meeting but downplayed the situation, describing it as a discussion about “temporary technical issues” due to a data migration. The organization maintained that the so-called “missing” results were the result of these technical challenges and asserted that the problems had “no negative impact whatsoever” on the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, pointing out that multiple databases were used to track cases.

    However, a former anti-doping official briefed on the matter told the New York Times that the database problems were still unresolved when the Games started. This revelation adds to the scrutiny WADA faces, especially after it was discovered that 23 Chinese swimmers competed in the Tokyo Olympics despite failing anti-doping tests.

    Player safety concerns continue to be points of emphasis across college football with this season’s rules changes. After a series of questionable calls from officials during Week 3, coaches sounded off on faulty flags. Hours after Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi ripped officials following his team’s 34-24 win over West Virginia, Georgia’s Kirby Smart questioned why he saw so much yellow on the field during the Bulldogs’ victory at Kentucky.

    Narduzzi received a fine, while Smart’s comments were light in nature and encompassed a college football-wide point of view. Georgia received nine penalties for 85 yards against the Wildcats, the second time they reached that total and the most in a single game since 2018.

    “I watched games today and it was like, crazy, we’re higher than we’ve been (with penalties), I watch all these games and they’re higher than they’ve ever been,” Smart said, via Dawgs247. “I’m like what’s going on? We’ve been a low-penalty, smart team and I can’t figure out. I don’t know if it’s the wya it’s being called higher, Is it being Calle brighter, because everybody’s got more. We’ve got to reel it in some.”

    “Nussmeier, no longer a quarterback because once the ball is picked he’s not a quarterback, gets sought out and knocked down with someone’s hands on his shoulder and because he does a great job of acting on the ground, he’s flagged,” Pate said. “The interception counts, but the points don’t. It was a horrific day yesterday.”

    Earlier in the game, officials called back O’Donnell Fortune’s interception return Kennard committed a horse-collar on Nussmeier, a play outlawed this offseason and can now occur within the tackle box, as what happened with the Gamecocks.

    Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Sunday he and South Carolina’s Ray Tanner called the SEC office asking for explanations on “several calls” that took place against the Tigers. Beamer mentioned that South Carolina rarely submits plays for review. This comes after LSU’s Brian Kelly sought answers from the SEC after a punt block in the game was deemed legal when it should not have counted, he said.

    South Carolina and LSU combined for 52 total penalties this season, the most in the SEC, after 22 referees threw flags inside Williams Brice Stadium.
