A sleek white aircraft became the first independently developed jet to break the sound barrier Tuesday, tearing through the air tens of thousands of feet above the Mojave Desert and a crowd of delighted onlookers.
The XB-1 aircraft accelerated to Mach 1.05 within about 11 minutes of taking off, according to Boom Supersonic and live video of the test flight.
The flight at the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave, California, took place as the company works to revive supersonic passenger travel, which died with the grounding of the Anglo-French Concorde more than two decades ago.
Boom plans to focus next on the Overture airliner, which it says will carry as many as 80 passengers while moving at about twice the speed of today’s subsonic airliners.
“XB-1’s supersonic flight demonstrates that the technology for passenger supersonic flight has arrived,” Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl said in a statement. “A small band of talented and dedicated engineers has accomplished what previously took governments and billions of dollars.”
The aircraft, which flew for the first time in March, is made almost completely from lightweight carbon fiber. It uses an augmented reality vision system to help with landing, since its long nose and high-angle approach can make it difficult for pilots to see.
“The future of aviation is here and now,” Amy Marino Spowart, president and CEO of the National Aeronautic Association, said in a statement. “Not only is there hope for faster and better commercial flight, but Boom proves that it can be done sustainably.”
Boom is one of several companies with an eye on supersonic passenger travel. Any new such service will likely face the same hurdles as the Concorde, which flew over the Atlantic and was barred from many overland routes because of the sonic booms it caused.
Sonic booms are heard on the ground when airplanes fly faster than the speed of sound — typically about 760 mph (1,223 kph) near sea level but varying depending on temperature, altitude and other conditions, according to the Congressional Research Service.
As a supersonic plane speeds through the air, it pushes molecules aside with great force, forming a shock wave “much like a boat creates a wake in water,” according to NASA.
Tuesday’s flight happened in the same airspace where in 1947 Charles “Chuck” Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier, piloting an orange, bullet-shaped Bell X-1 rocket plane.
A high-flying international lawyer whose firm ‘put Australian corporations on notice’ about a potential wave of class action lawsuits against miners and financial services companies has suddenly quit his post.
International class action specialists Pogust Goodhead set up shop in Australia last year and issued a warning that they were eyeing a series of business giants and planning to hold them to account over their responsibility to exhibit ‘basic decency and fairness’.
But the firm was this week hit with the surprise departure of jetsetting co-founder and global chairman Harris Pogust, who announced he was stepping down from his role after six years in order to ‘devote more time and energy to my philanthropic endeavours’.
In a statement this week, Mr Pogust wished his co-founder Mr Goodhead all the best and praised the firm for having ‘helped defend the rights of those who cannot defend themselves against the misdeeds of big business’.
Pogust Goodhead is currently taking action against BHP in the UK over the Samarco mine disaster in Brazil, which cost 19 people their lives and contaminated waterways and land spanning multiple villages in a case tipped to be worth up to $70billion in damages.
Last month, the class action specialist firm also shed up to 20 per cent of its staff – with jobs shed at its offices in both the UK and Brazil, the UK’s Law Society Gazette reported.
The New Jersey-born Mr Pogust has more than 25 years’ experience in litigation and class actions. Daily Mail Australia revealed an insight into Mr Pogust’s lavish lifestyle earlier this year.
Photographs show the crusading lawyer and his wife Carrie flying by private jet – including with their dog – sipping cocktails on luxury boats and travelling interstate for meals.
Jetsetting lawyer Harris Pogust’s family social media accounts offer an insight into the lavish lifestyle afforded to him on the back of his successful career. He’s now quit his firm
In November 2023, he shared details of his new property – a sprawling six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion boasting a pool, gym and wine cellar. A month prior he shared another photo of his laptop overlooking the ocean.
‘Nothing like flying down for dinner than back home. The fun never ends…’ he wrote, tagging his location at Philadelphia International Airport.
His wife has also shared photos of both Mr Pogust and the couple’s dog on a private jet, as well as luxurious snaps on yachts.
His firm, Pogust Goodhead, launched in 2018 and earned the title ‘the first legal unicorn’ after raising $300million in financial backing early on.
Co-founder Tom Goodhead visited Australia twice in 2023 to meet with MPs, unions and super funds over potential litigation. The firm set up an office in Sydney, headed by commercial disputes specialist Amie Crichton.
Ms Crichton cut her teeth on the other side of litigation, defending class actions on behalf of insurers for eight years. Speaking to law.com, she said that experience gives her a strategic advantage in prosecuting future class actions.
She said it had given her a much deeper understanding of how corporations seek to defend such matters – and how to counter that.
‘We are investigating a number of new cases against Australian multinational corporations, such as BHP, in which their commitment to this responsibility has been seriously thrown into question,’ said Mr Goodhead.
‘With the launch of our Sydney office, we are putting Australian corporations on notice that we are ready to hold them to account.
‘We are establishing a base in BHP’s backyard to ensure we explore every avenue in our fight for justice for victims.’
New Jersey-born Harris Pogust offers the greatest insight into their high-flying lives
The legal eagles said areas they’re targeting include the mining and resources sector, human rights issues, corporate misconduct, environmental issues and consumer law.
‘Specialists in the class action sector are becoming a little bit more creative and willing to attempt to find recourse through different channels,’ she said.
Mr Goodhead, who is both Oxford and Cambridge educated, spoke in February about the expansion and their current litigation portfolio.
He said winning one or more of the major litigations would see his team become ‘the highest-paid lawyers in the country by quiet some margin’.
And several months earlier in an interview with the Law Gazette in November 2023, Mr Goodhead spoke openly about his company’s capitalist ambitions.
‘We are here to make a profit,’ he said bluntly.
‘This isn’t an NGO though I know we look like one. We are here to make a profit… I’ve got trainee solicitors earning 150k.’
Cole Palmer traded the football pitch for the red carpet on Tuesday night, stepping out with his influencer girlfriend Connie Grace for the first time at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London.
The Chelsea midfielder, dressed sharply in a black suit and bowtie, attended the glamorous event at The Roof Gardens, with Connie, also from Manchester, who complemented Cole’s look in a sleek black dress that highlighted her toned midriff.
Making their relationship public with the debut appearance, the couple, who partied with the likes of Usain Bolt, have reportedly been together for around three months.
Connie is a nail technician but regularly travels, posting updates on her Instagram profile, which boasts over 17,000 followers despite having just 72 pictures.
Cole regularly likes her uploads, including sultry bikini snaps from her idyllic holidays to Ibiza and Bali. Her most recent glamorous photo was taken at Stamford Bridge – with the caption: ‘Fur season’.
The couple are said to have flown to Ibiza via private jet in August, where they enjoyed a ‘quick trip’ together, dining out on the harbour where they shared a romantic candlelit meal.
Connie was also seen posing alongside the Chelsea star after he picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in September. However, the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London was their first official outing.
The Chelsea footballer shared a tender embrace with Manchester-born Connie during the club’s clash against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in the autumn, hugging the beauty from the sidelines in front of thousands of fans.

Cole was named PFA Young Player of the Year following his breakthrough season at Chelsea. The England midfielder scored 22 goals and made 11 assists during what was a disappointing campaign for his club, who finished sixth in the Premier League.
But the footballer’s performances on the pitch proved to be the big positive for his side.
The couple’s sweet moment while he proudly showed off his PFA Young Player of the Year award came after the pair were spotted on holiday together in Ibiza at the start of August following reports of their ‘growing friendship.’
Cole’s summer break gave him the chance to spend quality time with Connie, 22, after he scored in the Euros final against Spain, which England went on to lose 2-1.
A source previously told MailOnline: ‘Cole and Connie have grown increasingly close over the summer.
‘They were able to spend quality time together during Cole’s time off and their friendship has blossomed.
‘Cole even invited Connie to his game on Sunday, cementing their closeness and the trust between them.
‘They maybe young but their relationship is serious now and Cole wants Connie to be part of his world, on and off the pitch.’

Meanwhile, Cole was interviewed on the red carpet on Tuesday night for a range of hilarious social media videos which were released on GQ’s TikTok page.
When asked whether he would rather score an own goal or be subbed off in the first half, the footballer said: ‘Own goal. When you get subbed in the first half, it’s bad. It just damages your reputation. It’s never happened to me touch wood.’
The interviewer went on to ask whether he would rather score a goal from the half way line or net a bicycle kick – to which Palmer responded: ‘That’s tough, I don’t know. I feel like a bicycle kick is harder. I can’t really do a bicycle. I can practice though.’
Earlier this month, England stars Cole and Kobbie Mainoo posed as cover stars for GQ’s magazine’s Men of the Year edition.
The publication said the edition aims to celebrate men who are ‘breaking the rules, changing the game, and taking their slice of the culture to another level’.
Palmer and Mainoo feature after the pair enjoyed stunning seasons at club level and played a role in England reaching the Euro 2024 final.
The pair were jointly interviewed by the magazine for the December issue, with the headline ‘Kobbie Mainoo & Cole Palmer Are Just Getting Started’.
The magazine highlighted Mainoo and Palmer as being two players who ‘grabbed the nation’s attention’ on England’s route to the Euro 2024 final.

Palmer made a stunning impact during his debut season at Chelsea after his summer move from Man City.
Despite his limited game time at Euro 2024, Palmer was last month named as England men’s player of the year.
Palmer has continued his stunning form this season for Chelsea by scoring seven goals in 13 matches, while Mainoo’s progress has been set back by injury.
The duo are expected to be a key part of new England manager Thomas Tuchel’s plans when he officially takes charge from January.

Paris Hilton took to social media on Sunday to share a peek inside her private plane, called Sliv Air.
The 43-year-old socialite — who performed at the Hollywood Palladium last week — uploaded several videos on Instagram Stories as she traveled from Los Angeles to New York City.
‘Taking off to N.Y.C. on #SlivAir ✈️,’ she captioned an initial clip as she recorded her walk from the runway to the aircraft.
The mother-of-two highlighted a welcome mat with ‘Sliv Air’ printed in pink letters, an iteration of her ‘sliving’ catchphrase.
‘Loves it #SlivAir ✨,’ Paris added before taking her followers inside the jet which flies above 40K feet.

The footage continued as Hilton walked through the cabin and she soundtracked Jay-Z’s 2009 hit Empire State of Mind featuring Alicia Keys.
She once again wrote, ‘#SlivAir ✨✈️✨’ adding, ‘LA to NYC,’ over the clip.
One area of the cabin had two side-by-side beds covered in fluffy pillow and pink blankets, and there was a pink sleep mask set to the side.
Hilton’s tour continued as she showed off the plane’s plush, brown, leather seats and a bounty of snacks arranged on a shiny wood counter.
There was also a cake featuring a photo of Paris and best friend Nicole Richie from their 2003 show The Simple Life.
Referring to their inside joke nicknames, the heiress wrote, ‘Sill & Bill 4eva @nicolerichie Sanasaaaa.’
She added her song BBA with Megan Thee Stallion to the snippet.
Once the star landed in the Big Apple, she filmed the inside of her luxurious penthouse and cooed, ‘I’m excited to be back home.’

TOKYO — The defense ministers of Japan, the U.K. and Italy agreed to accelerate the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet, and announced that a trilateral government organization would be established to work with the parties producing the craft, Japanese officials said Sunday.
The three countries agreed in 2022 to jointly produce a new combat aircraft that will be ready for deployment in 2035, under the Global Combat Air Program, or GCAP, to strengthen cooperation in the face of growing threats from China, Russia and North Korea.
The next generation fighter jet would replace Japan’s retiring F-2s that it jointly developed with the U.S. and Britain’s Tempest.
On Sunday, Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, after meeting with his U.K. and Italian counterparts, John Healey and Guido Crosett, said a joint body called the GCAP International Government Organization, or GIGO, will be set up by the end of this year to oversee the aircraft’s development.
The ministers met on the sidelines of the Group of Seven defense ministers meeting in Naples, Italy.
Several private sector companies, including Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Britain’s BAE Systems PLC and Italy’s Leonardo, are taking part in the project.
GIGO, to be based in the U.K. and headed by a Japanese official, will oversee the aircraft’s development.
“We now see the launch of GIGO and a joint venture on track” toward signing their first contract next year, Nakatani said.
Sunday’s agreement addresses concerns over the progress of the project despite changes of leadership in both Japan and the U.K.
In Tokyo, Mitsubishi Heavy had a 1/10th model of the joint fighter jet on display for the first time and attracted visitors at a major aerospace exhibit last week.
Akira Sugimoto, MHI’s Japan program senior representative for GCAP, said that the joint fighter jet development will be meaningful for Japanese suppliers and for the country’s industrial base.
“Our basic position is to bring our strengths together to develop a high quality fighter jet. I believe Japanese suppliers have outstanding technologies and I do hope as many of them as possible would join (GCAP),” Sugimoto said.
“I think it will also help Japanese suppliers to enhance their capacity to develop equipment and contribute to provide a better outlook and business environment and stability,” he said.
Japan, which is rapidly building up its military, hopes to have greater capability to counter China’s rising assertiveness, and the joint fighter jet project would help strengthen Japan’s mostly domestic and underdeveloped defense industry.
Japan has significantly eased its arms export restrictions to allow foreign sales of the future fighter jet and licensing back of weapons, such as surface-to-air PAC-3 missile interceptors produced in Japan to complement U.S. inventory, which has decreased because of its support for Ukraine.

In an emotional five minute clip on social media, the 22-time Grand Slam winner announced his plans.
He said: “I am here to let you know I am retiring from professional tennis.
“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, the last two especially.
“I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations.”

In recent years, Nadal has struggled with injuries and his playing time has been restricted.
However, he retires as king of The French Open, which he won a record 14 times.
Off the court, Nadal lives a life of luxury generated by the wads of money he has earned from being an ace on it.
Rafael has made a whopping £170million during his illustrious career, as the curtain comes down on it.
He lives in a stunning beachfront Majorcan mansion, which he paid around £3million for in 2013.

The Real Madrid super fan splashed the cash on a private jet – a Cessna Citation CJ2+ that flew him to tournaments around the globe that cost £5million.
Nadal also travels by sea in his stunning £4.5million 80 Sunreef Power catamaran, a super yacht he had custom-made.
He has had insurance worker Maria Francisca Perello by his side throughout his success, with the pair finally marrying in 2019 after 14 years together.
A home with a view
Although Nadal likes to remain private, like many professional athletes he gave us a glimpse into his amazing home in the Balearic Islands during lockdown in 2020.
Found in Porto Cristo, Manacor, he paid £3million for the stunning beach property that spans just over 1,000 square metres.
It was reported that Nadal spent seven years renovating the mansion, and pulled down some of the buildings before it became a dream place to live.
The design, from what we’ve seen on Instagram, is minimalist with all the essentials Nadal needs.
He has a fully-equipped gym to keep on top of his fitness.
While in his downtime, he can enjoy views of the Mediterranean sea and idyllic coves from his window.

Time to fly
It’s amazing to think that in 2010, Nadal tried to get on an economy flight to the Match for Africa until rival Roger Federer gave him a lift in his private jet.
Not wanting to get stuck again, the 14-time French Open winner decided to buy his own plane – a Cessna Citation CJ2+ worth £5million.
Only 223 of the jets were made, and it costs around £220,000-per-year to maintain.
The Cessna Citation CJ2+ can accommodate eight passengers in luxury.
Not forgetting what Federer did for him, Nadal gave Viktor Troicki a lift to London in his jet after beating him in the Mercedes Cup final the day before.
18
Troicki later thanked Nadal for allowing him to fly with him and shared a snap with the former World No1 and a pilot on Twitter.
“Thanks to great champion @RafaelNadal for giving us lift to London!” he said.

By land and by sea
Back in 2019, Nadal traded in what yacht for another. He sold his 76-foot Italian-built MCY 76 motor yacht he called Beethoven for a cool £2million.
Then, he put that money towards buying an amazing customised 80 Sunreef Power catamaran for £4.5million.
Built for long cruises and not skimping on full comfort, the 80 Sunreef Power is powered by two 1,200 hp engines.
It has a personal jet-ski garage and a 39-foot beam with a superyacht-style flybridge that offers a vast living space big enough to house a hot tub, a wet bar and the waterfall-fed pool.
The main deck can be set up in a variety of ways, dependent on your dining needs with different seating, an open plan kitchen and a bar.
The master suite, which is also on the main deck, offers sea views, as well as natural light thanks to the skylight overhead.
It has an en-suite bathroom with a shower, a spacious closet and a desk.
There are four guest cabins and two crew cabins, with up to 12 guests able to be accommodated at one time.

Sharing his life
Despite spending most of his time travelling around the world, the one constant in his life is his one true love, Maria.
Better known as Xisca Perello, she has never been one to hog the limelight or a celebrity lifestyle, though Nadal himself enjoyed hanging out with Spain’s World Cup stars in 2010 with the trophy.
“It’s not a world I want to be part of, nor do I think Rafa would have chosen to be with a woman who looked for that in life,” she once said.
They met in the early 2000s, and were firm friends before they started dating in 2005.
They married in 2019 in a star-studded ceremony in front of around 350 guests at the La Fortaleza castle in Majorca.
Celebrities in tow to watch the couple’s nuptials included actors Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie.
But, she was hardly seen on the circuit cheering Rafael on.
“He needs his space when he is competing, and just the idea of me hanging around and waiting on his needs all day tires me out,” she told the Telegraph in 2011.

“It would asphyxiate me. And then he would have to be worrying about me… No. If I followed him everywhere, I think there’s a risk we might stop getting along.”
Rafa, enjoy your retirement.

Once celebrated as a billionaire, Kanye West’s net worth has taken a sharp decline, falling from $2 billion to $400 million according to Forbes. The significant drop in Kanye West’s net worth was largely due to his broken partnership with Adidas, a deal that had previously been a major source of his wealth. His controversial opinions led Adidas to sever ties with him, drastically reducing Kanye West’s income. Despite the setbacks, Kanye West continues to pursue various business ventures.
Kanye West’s Career and Recent Challenges
Even though Kanye West has been a leading figure in the music world for many years, recent events have affected his career. His latest album, Donda 2, was released exclusively on the Stem player, but it did not perform as well as expected. Along with financial troubles, Kanye West has also faced legal issues. He was ordered by a court to pay $200,000 per month in child support for his four children with ex-wife Kim Kardashian. Additionally, he is facing lawsuits from former employees who allege they were not paid their due wages.

One of his most notable properties is the sprawling Hidden Hills estate in California, where he lived with Kim Kardashian during their marriage. This property was acquired in multiple transactions starting in 2014, and over $28.5 million has been spent on acquiring and developing it. After their divorce, Kim Kardashian purchased Kanye’s share of the estate for $23 million, including $3 million for interior furnishings.
In 2021, Kanye West bought a beachfront property in Malibu for $57.3 million, but he later put it on the market in 2023 for $53 million. Other properties in his portfolio include a 320-acre estate in Calabasas worth $16 million and several ranches in Wyoming, including one he sold in June 2024.

Kanye West’s private jet
Kanye West, now called Ye, still enjoys his luxury items, including large mansions, expensive cars, and possibly a private jet. His plane is a Boeing 747, a massive two-deck aircraft usually designed to carry 660 passengers. It’s the same type of plane used by the U.S. president, known as Air Force One.
Ye’s jet, the largest owned by any celebrity, is called the “Yeezy floating office.” It comes with luxury features like a double-bed suite, marble bathrooms, a lounge, guest rooms, and a dining area.
Some reports say Adidas gave Ye the jet in 2018 for the success of his Yeezy brand. However, a Forbes report from 2018 suggests it might actually belong to Las Vegas Sands Corp., owned by billionaire Sheldon Adelson before he passed away in 2021. His wife, Miriam Adelson, inherited part of his wealth.
The plane is a Boeing 747SP, a smaller but longer-range version of the Boeing 747-100. Even if it was a gift from Adidas, its value would be less than $10 million.
Kanye West’s personal life has always been in the public eye. He was in a long-term relationship with designer Alexis Phifer from 2002 to 2008 and dated model Amber Rose from 2008 to 2010. Kanye began dating reality TV star Kim Kardashian in 2012, and they married in 2014. The couple had four children together before divorcing in 2022. Shortly after, Kanye briefly dated actress Julia Fox.
In 2023, Kanye West reportedly married Bianca Censori, an Australian architect, in a private ceremony. In 2021, Kanye successfully changed his legal name to “Ye,” a reflection of his evolving identity.
Despite all his challenges, Kanye West continues to remain a significant figure in the worlds of music, fashion, and business. Whether he will regain his former financial glory remains to be seen, but his influence and impact on culture are undeniable.
