WASHINGTON, DC — The University of Scranton field hockey team advanced to the Landmark Conference Championship after a 4-0 victory against Catholic University in Wednesday night’s Landmark Semifinal contest at Cardinal Stadium.
The Royals will return to the championship for the second consecutive year, facing Susquehanna in a rematch of the 2023 Landmark Conference Championship.
How it Happened
The Royals jumped on the board with 4:16 to go in the first quarter when graduate student Elle Collins sent a perfect pass through the Cardinals’ defense to graduate student Katie Redding who flicked it past goalie Ella Bowman to give the Royals an early 1-0 advantage.
Scranton added to their lead in the second quarter, converting on their fourth penalty corner attempt of the game with 11:38 to go in the half. Junior Maggie Keys received the insertion from senior Lauren Franco and shot it toward the cage, and it was Franco who was there to redirect Keys’ shot past Bowman to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
Catholic threatened with a penalty corner attempt two minutes into the fourth quarter, but junior Kiera Lamb made a brilliant defensive save, keeping the Cardinals off the board.
Redding struck again with 9:29 left in the fourth quarter. Junior Annie Shaw carried the ball to the corner of the circle, pulling Bowman out of the cage, before connecting with Redding who poked it in for her second goal of the night.
The Royals added one more goal in the final two minutes of the contest as senior Reagan Dolan fired a shot on a penalty stroke attempt into the top right corner of the cage to make it 4-0 Scranton.
Senior goalie Gianna Travia and the Royals’ defensive unit limited Catholic to just five shots in the game, and they defended all ten of Catholic’s penalty corner attempts to perfection. This shutout was the eighth of the year for Scranton.

Redding led the team with her two goals in the first multi-goal playoff game of her career.
Franco has now scored one goal in both playoff games in 2024.

STAPLETON, Ala. — Residents of rural south Alabama are campaigning for a local amendment to gain landmark district status.
Local amendments one, two and three in Baldwin County will define landmarks across Stapleton, Bon Secour and Whitehouse Fork — preserving residents’ rights to decide whether their land is incorporated into the surrounding city limits.
WEAR News visited multiple farms in Stapleton where property owners are working hard to encourage Baldwin County residents to vote yes on these amendments. Residents say they’ve fought for more than two years to add the amendment to their ballot.
A proposed constitutional amendment will prohibit the annexation of any property without property owners’ approval.
Michele White lives on several acres in Stapleton. She and others living nearby have worked for several years to prevent annexation, telling WEAR News she and her neighbors don’t want to be forced into a different lifestyle.
“It really became a mission because all of us who live in Stapleton moved out there on purpose,” said White. “We didn’t get thrown out to the country. We moved out there to lead a rural life in Baldwin County, and the area to do that is getting smaller and smaller and we want to preserve that in Stapleton.”
Along with Stapleton, Bon Secour and Whitehouse Fork are also being voted on. White says voting no on the amendment would be a disservice to property owners.
“Those are three small rural communities,” said White. “Granting landmark district status to us gives us identity to the map, but also protects us from neighboring annexing from nearby cities.”
“This landmark district status doesn’t change zoning, doesn’t change land use, taxation,” she said. “[It] doesn’t affect anything that hurts anyone else — yet gives the property owners the ability to choose whether they want to stay in the county, if a nearby city wanted to annex their property.”
Despite many landowners in the area against annexation, White says voting yes on the amendment doesn’t mean your property can’t be annexed. The amendment just secures your right to have the final say.
“It still preserves the right for those landowners from accepting an invitation to be annexed,” White said. “It prevents them from being forced into annexation.”
“We’re watching the cities get closer and closer on all sides,” she said. “I live in Stapleton and our area is bordered by Loxley, Spanish Fort and Bay Minette. And the growth is wonderful. We appreciate the municipalities and everything they do, but we’d like to see preservation of rural areas in Baldwin County.”
Stapleton residents are holding a town hall on Thursday to discuss the specifics of the amendments. It’ll be on Baldwin County residents’ ballots a week from Tuesday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Efforts in California to establish first-in-the-nation safety measures for the largest artificial intelligence systems cleared an important vote Wednesday that could pave the way for U.S. regulations on the technology evolving at warp speed.
The proposal, aiming to reduce potential risks created by AI, would require companies to test their models and publicly disclose their safety protocols to prevent the models from being manipulated to, for example, wipe out the state’s electric grid or help build chemical weapons — scenarios experts say could be possible in the future with such rapid advancements in the industry.
The bill is among hundreds lawmakers are voting on during its final week of session. Gov. Gavin Newsom then has until the end of September to decide whether to sign them into law, veto them or allow them to become law without his signature.
The measure squeaked by in the Assembly Wednesday and requires a final Senate vote before reaching the governor’s desk.
Supporters said it would set some of the first much-needed safety ground rules for large-scale AI models in the United States. The bill targets systems that require more than $100 million in data to train. No current AI models have hit that threshold.
“It’s time that Big Tech plays by some kind of a rule, not a lot, but something,” Republican Assemblymember Devon Mathis said in support of the bill Wednesday. “The last thing we need is for a power grid to go out, for water systems to go out.”
The proposal, authored by Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener, faced fierce opposition from venture capital firms and tech companies, including OpenAI, Google and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. They say safety regulations should be established by the federal government and that the California legislation takes aim at developers instead of targeting those who use and exploit the AI systems for harm.
A group of several California House members also opposed the bill, with Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling it “ well-intentioned but ill informed.”
Chamber of Progress, a left-leaning Silicon Valley-funded industry group, said the bill is “based on science fiction fantasies of what AI could look like.”
“This bill has more in common with Blade Runner or The Terminator than the real world,” Senior Tech Policy Director Todd O’Boyle said in a statement after the Wednesday vote. “We shouldn’t hamstring California’s leading economic sector over a theoretical scenario.”
The legislation is supported by Anthropic, an AI startup backed by Amazon and Google, after Wiener adjusted the bill earlier this month to include some of the company’s suggestions. The current bill removed the penalty of perjury provision, limited the state attorney general’s power to sue violators and narrowed the responsibilities of a new AI regulatory agency. Social media platform X owner Elon Musk also threw his support behind the proposal this week.
Anthropic said in a letter to Newsom that the bill is crucial to prevent catastrophic misuse of powerful AI systems and that “its benefits likely outweigh its costs.”
Wiener said his legislation took a “light touch” approach.
“Innovation and safety can go hand in hand—and California is leading the way,” Weiner said in a statement after the vote.
He also slammed critics earlier this week for dismissing potential catastrophic risks from powerful AI models as unrealistic: “If they really think the risks are fake, then the bill should present no issue whatsoever.”
Wiener’s proposal is among dozens of AI bills California lawmakers proposed this year to build public trust, fight algorithmic discrimination and outlaw deepfakes that involve elections or pornography. With AI increasingly affecting the daily lives of Americans, state legislators have tried to strike a balance of reigning in the technology and its potential risks without stifling the booming homegrown industry.
California, home of 35 of the world’s top 50 AI companies, has been an early adopter of AI technologies and could soon deploy generative AI tools to address highway congestion and road safety, among other things.
Newsom, who declined to weigh in on the measure earlier this summer, had warned against AI overregulation.
