  • Automakers showcase their latest advances for in-vehicle experiences at CES

Automakers showcase their latest advances for in-vehicle experiences at CES

LAS VEGAS — Interior lighting aimed at reducing motion sickness. Shiny holographic dashboards displayed on windshields. And AI-powered voice assistants paired with infotainment systems to keep you company on long drives.

Automakers pulled out all the stops to showcase their latest advances for in-vehicle experiences at CES, the Consumer Technology Association’s annual trade show of all things tech, in Las Vegas this week. Hyundai Mobis unveiled a full-windshield holographic technology, while BMW spotlighted its new “iDrive” panoramic display. And Honda and Sony Honda Mobility showed what consumers can expect with their upcoming electric vehicles.

Many of these driving enhancements aim to “make life on board more comfortable,” explains Axel Maschka, executive vice president and head of the business division at Hyundai Mobis. And for some consumers today, he adds, “this ‘living space’” of a car’s interior has become a dominant part of a vehicle’s appeal.

Hyundai Mobis’ holographic windshield display provides a glimpse into that. The technology, which won’t be on the market for at least several more years, projects information ranging from driving speed to safety alerts across the entire windshield, and also provides some entertainment options for those who aren’t behind the wheel. To keep the driver’s eyes on the road, the panoramic display looks different depending on where you sit. A demo from the South Korean company show the front row passenger can watch a movie or play a video game projected ahead of them, for example, but it’s not visible to the driver.

Maschka claims the holographic windshield gives drivers an easier view of key information in their line of sight and keeps other distractions in the car out of sight.

And Hyundai Mobis isn’t the only one giving the view from cars’ front seats a makeover. BMW also showed off its new Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X this week.

BMW’s iDrive will soon be featured in all of new models that will hit the market starting at the end of this year. The system projects a panoramic display onto the vehicles’ lower windscreen — controlled by a touchscreen below and voice commands — and can be personalized by different colors, apps and other preferences.

Honda and Sony Honda Mobility also spotlighted in-cabin features that drivers will soon encounter in their new EV lineup.

Sony Honda Mobility says “Afeela 1″ will include an interactive AI-powered voice agent. In Monday’s remarks, CEO Yasuhide Mizuno said that “customers can be entertained by communicating with Afeela 1” — noting that Afeela’s agent is “focused on conversation” and “proactively talks to you” to provide useful information as you drive.

The Afeela 1, scheduled to go on sale later this year with deliveries anticipated for mid-2026, also touts a panoramic screen and infotainment system filled with a variety of entertainment apps. Online reservations for the car opened in California this week.

Meanwhile, Honda spotlighted “ultra-personal optimization” for customers of its upcoming 0 series of election vehicles — the first two models of which are set to launch in North America next year. The Japanese car giant unveiled the operating system that it plans to use in all 0 series models, “AISMO OS,” which it says will be integrated into vehicle operations ranging from automated driving and advanced driver assistance to in-car infotainment.

In-vehicle software functions will also continue to be updated after purchase. “The more it is used, the more personalized it will become,” Katsushi Inoue, global head of electrification business development at Honda, said in Tuesday remarks.

While there’s ample excitement around the latest bells and whistles announced from car companies like those on display at CES this week, questions also emerged about how many new features are too many features.

“It’s definitely easy to get a little bit overwhelmed by the amount of technology in cars … especially when you have cars that have three, four, five (or) six different touchscreens that offer different interfaces,” said Tim Stevens, an automotive analyst and freelance journalist who attended CES this week.

But, Stevens added, this also shows how promising the integration of technology like AI can be — such as with in-car voice assistants. If you can “have a conversation with your car” to ask for detailed directions or restaurant suggestions, he explains, that can reduce distractions like trying to reach for your phone.

In addition to in-vehicle experiences, EVs showcased at CES this week also put a spotlight on the state of sustainable energy in the car industry today — and the need to expand access sources for consumers. In addition to a previously-announced venture with seven other automakers to create the “IONNA” charging network in North America, Honda on Tuesday said it plans to expand such efforts “to ensure that Honda 0 Series owners will have access to more than 100,000 charging stations by 2030.”

Honda is also exploring ways to provide “personalized” charging experiences for its EV customers down the road. The company said it’s considering incorporating AI technology from Amazon Web Services to help individuals find nearby charging facilities, for example, or simplify payments.

  • Apple’s latest iPhones get the gift of more AI as holiday shopping season heats up

Apple’s latest iPhones get the gift of more AI as holiday shopping season heats up

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is pumping more artificial intelligence into the latest iPhones during the holiday shopping season with a free software update that includes a feature that enables users to create customized emojis within a matter of seconds.

The Wednesday release of the iPhone’s upgraded operating system, iOS 18.2, extends Apple’s expansion into AI months after rivals such as Samsung and Google began implanting the revolutionary technology on their devices. The update builds upon another one that came out in late October to usher in the AI era for Apple and the iPhone, as well as for the iPad and Mac.

The latest round of AI tricks includes “Genmojis,” Apple’s description for emojis that iPhone users will be able to ask the technology to create and then share. Apple says it is placing some limits its AI’s emoji artistry to prevent the distribution of violent or hateful imagery. Other features include an “Image Playground” for a variety of AI-styled illustrations, writing tools and options for summarizing emails.

The technology won’t work on iPhones that Apple made before 2023 because it requires a special processor that isn’t in older models. The AI will work on the iPhone 16 line-up that came out in September and the premium iPhone 15 models released last year.

That exclusivity is expected to propel a cycle of iPhone upgrades during the current holiday shopping season into next year, driving up Apple’s profit even higher from the $94 billion that the Cupertino, California, company pocketed in its last fiscal year ending in September. That expectation is the main reason Apple’s stock price has climbed by about 30% so far this year to push the company’s market value closer to the $4 trillion threshold for the first time.

Apple is broadening the AI suite’s appeal by including English versions tailored for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. that are included in the latest software update.

Although the iPhone’s AI is similar to many of the features that have already been available from other companies, Apple is taking a slightly different approach to the technology in an effort to stand out from the rest of pack. It is emphasizing its ongoing commitment to protecting iPhone users’ privacy by processing most of its AI on the device itself or corralling it in a secured data center. Users seeking more AI wizardry than the device or the special data center can handle will have the option to reach out to the popular ChatGPT technology made by OpenAI, which has forged a partnership with Apple.

  • Black Plastic Kitchenware May Look Nice But Could Be Harming Your Health: Latest Study Finds

Black Plastic Kitchenware May Look Nice But Could Be Harming Your Health: Latest Study Finds

Do you use black plastic items such as spatulas or sushi trays in your kitchen? While black plastic items may look more appealing than other colours, a new study has found several potential health risks associated with the use of most black plastics in the kitchen. Conducted in the US, scientists from Toxic-Free Future (a non-profit organization) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam found high levels of cancer-causing, hormone-disrupting, flame-retardant chemicals in a variety of household products made with black plastics. This includes everyday items such as food service ware (containers, bowls, plates, cups, and other items used for one-time use), kitchen utensils, and even black plastic toys.

The study found that plastics used in electronics, such as televisions, often contain toxic chemicals. These plastics, typically containing high concentrations of toxic flame retardants, may be recycled to make household items such as kitchen utensils. Recycled electronic components that use flame retardants tend to be black, which is why black plastic utensils are more likely to contain such toxic chemicals.

“Flame-retardant-containing electronics, such as the outer casings of large TVs, are being recycled into food storage containers and utensils,” said Heather Stapleton, the Ronie-Richele Garcia-Johnson Distinguished Professor at Duke University.

Also Read:Celebrity Nutritionist Asks Swiggy And Zomato To Stop Using Plastic Containers, Zomato Responds

Megan Liu, study co-author and science and policy manager at Toxic-Free Future explained, “These cancer-causing chemicals shouldn’t be used, to begin with, but with recycling, they are entering our environment and our homes in more ways than one. The high levels we found are concerning.”

The study, published in the journal Chemosphere, tested 203 household products made of black plastic, and 85% of them had toxic flame-retardant chemicals. Although they did not disclose the specific brands or manufacturers, the study found the highest levels of toxic flame retardants in a sushi tray, spatula, and a beaded necklace.

According to the study, health concerns related to flame retardants include:

    1. Carcinogenicity: The ability or tendency of a chemical to induce tumours (benign or malignant).
    2. Endocrine Disruption: Changes in the activity or production of hormones due to chemicals.
    3. Neurotoxicity: Damage to the brain or peripheral nervous system caused by exposure to natural or man-made toxic substances.
    4. Reproductive Toxicity: Adverse effects on sexual function and fertility in adult males and females, as well as developmental toxicity in offspring.
    5. Developmental Toxicity: Any structural or functional alteration caused by the environmental insult that interferes with normal growth, differentiation, development, and/or behaviour.

According to experts, it is advised to replace your concerning kitchenware or use black-coated ones less.

“I’ve spent over half of my life with the Club as a player and administrator and will cherish the many memories we have created together at the Western Bulldogs,” Grant said in a club statement on Friday.

  • 2 cities, 1 fare: We tried this latest travel trend of doing a ‘free stopover’, which allowed us to visit more countries for less, Lifestyle News

2 cities, 1 fare: We tried this latest travel trend of doing a ‘free stopover’, which allowed us to visit more countries for less, Lifestyle News

A new travel trend has taken flight – literally.

More and more travellers are embracing the concept of ‘free stopovers,’ allowing them to explore additional destinations at one fare. Yet, despite the growing popularity of this travel ‘hack’, many still don’t quite understand how it can work for them.

Intrigued by the idea, we decided to put this trend to the test by booking a flight with EVA Air that would take us on a whirlwind adventure through Taipei, Taiwan and Fukuoka, Japan.

EVA Air, a Skytrax-certified five-star airline, serves 10 cities in Japan (such as Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka) and Seoul, Korea with over 130 weekly flights from Taipei – perfect for those looking for a vacation within a vacation.

Best part of EVA Air’s free stopover

    Free food

If you’re flying with EVA Air, don’t toss away your boarding pass when you land – instead, use it to exchange for a complimentary bowl of Danzai Noodles at Du Hsiao Yueh, a popular chain specialising in classic Taiwanese food.

We weren’t particularly hungry because EVA Air fed us so well on board, but when the Danzai Noodles were served, its umami broth and meat sauce paired with chewy wheat noodles just made us slurp till the very last strand.

This offer is only available till Jan 31, 2025, at:

    Tainan Original Store

No. 16, Zhongzheng Rd, West Central District, Tainan City

    Taipei Dihua Store

No. 112, Section 1, Dihua Street, Datong District, Taipei City

    Free guided tour

Maximise and enjoy your time in Taiwan with a free half-day tour. Be sure to book early, as each tour is limited to just 18 people.

    A mini vacation in Taiwan

We chose to stay in different hotels in Taoyuan and Taipei respectively when we were flying to and fro Fukuoka, Japan from Singapore so we could explore a different side of Taiwan each time.

If you’re into laidback vibes and affordable eats, Taoyuan is a great option for your stopover – plus, it’s less than 30 minutes from the airport!

For the Taoyuan leg of our trip, we chose to stay at Century Hotel Taoyuan. It was all we needed to rest, relax, pig out at a nearby night market, get a foot reflexology just five minutes away and get a good night’s sleep before our week-long adventure in Japan.

Head to Rong Ji Dou Jiang for some traditional Taiwanese breakfast like green onion pancakes and soybean milk before exploring Taoyuan 77 Art Zone – a former police station turned arts and cultural district. Good coffee and cute trinkets are aplenty there.

However, if you’re more interested in what the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, has got to offer – like, Pop Mart’s Taiwan flagship store which is right smack in the middle of the vibrant Ximending district – then just take a 45-minute taxi ride or hop on the Taoyuan Metro to Taipei Main Station.

Aside from getting free noodles at Du Hsiao Yueh along Dihua Street, you should also take a stroll to Dadaocheng Wharf Container Market for some drinks, snacks and vibes along the Insta-worthy pier. The nearby Ningxia Night Market and Ximending are also great for picking up some salt and pepper popcorn chicken and bubble tea – both must-haves when visiting Taiwan!

    Double the adventure

Our experience with EVA Air’s multi-destination adventure was nothing short of fantastic. The opportunity to explore both Taipei and Fukuoka enriched our trip and showcased how a short stopover can transform a standard flight into an unforgettable vacation.

If you’re looking to maximise your travel experience without stretching your budget, consider taking advantage of free stopovers. With EVA Air’s extensive flight network, your next trip could turn into a two-in-one holiday that you won’t soon forget.

Whether you’re captivated by the neon lights of Taipei or the serene temples and castles of Fukuoka, this travel trend is well worth exploring.

This article is brought to you in partnership with EVA Air.

  • College Football World Sounds Alarm on Powerhouse Program’s Latest Commit After Spotting Red Flags

College Football World Sounds Alarm on Powerhouse Program’s Latest Commit After Spotting Red Flags

Grabbing another victory, the head coach of the Buffs, Deion Sanders, is working to live up to the title of “Coach of the Year.” Colorado (6-2) defeated Cincinnati (5-3) to earn bowl qualification for the very first time after 2016, thanks to a late field goal and a missed chance on downs before halftime. Buffs received more excellent news prior to the game, so it appears that the celebration of winning will be doubled this time. Yes, a four-star wide receiver has committed.

Deion Sanders and Co. have acquired a valuable player who will aid the squad in the years after Travis Hunter, as 2024 is his last year in CFB. And they got it. According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Adrian Wilson, the 4-star WR, announced his commitment to Colorado on Saturday. However, before his de-commitment on October 23, Wilson was pledged to Arizona State. He has previously stated that he is committed to TCU and Oregon. But this time after committing to Buffs, Wilson mentioned to On3, “It took me a minute to find but, I’M HOME🦬.

Plus, Wilson said to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, “What excites me the most is the opportunity to go somewhere in the air-raid offense and start.” However, given his inconsistent behavior, it is still unclear if he will ever recommit to a different program. Basically, the wide receiver has taken his pledge for the fourth time. Therefore, the CFB fans were incensed by this contradiction, and one fan wrote, “I wouldn’t believe bruh til week 1 😂.”

Safe to say, while Colorado was pleased with Wilson’s commitment, the whole college football community was mocking the 4-star wide receiver’s unstable decision.

Fans’ amusing responses to the 4-star commit

Wilson has so far this season hauled in 26 passes for 601 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging more than 23 yards per catch, which is among his outstanding high school stats. His 1,003 catches and 14 touchdowns from the previous season solidified his status as a superb playmaker. But it is unacceptable for a high school athlete to change his pledge multiple times and one fan remarked, “I’m a buff and happy he committed to Colorado but bruh… High schoolers shouldn’t be allowed to switch up 4 times 😭😭 NIL needs some regulation.” Having the same concern in mind, another fan commented, “Bro’s on his 4th school before entering CFB. He finna be a transfer portal wizard 🧙🏾‍♂️

According to the On3, Wilson is the 267th-best player in the nation for the 2025 season. “Re-opening my recruitment was not an easy decision, as I hold a great deal of respect for the coaching staff and the vision you have for the program,” the top athlete informed On3 prior to de-committing to Arizona. A fan ridiculed his assertion by writing, “Bros goin to Nebraska next week😂.” Echoing the same sentiment, another fan wrote, “🦬🦬🦬 Love the honesty😂😂😂.

The last word from a fan, expressing uncertainty over Wilson’s final destination for the 2025 class, read, “Wonder what school he gonna be at next week.” Therefore, the fog surrounding his commitment won’t go away until the WR makes his final decision. We’ll see whether he stays with the Buffs. What do you think?
