Motueka lifestyle farmer fined $4200 for leaving cow to suffer cancer that had eaten away eye

Motueka horticulturalist and lifestyle farmer Kathryn Rona Saunders only needed to call a vet, but she didn’t and must now pay the almost $1000 it cost to have the animal put down, plus a $4200 fine.

Veterinarian Roger Bay said it was one of the worst cases of what is known as “cancer eye” he had seen in more than 30 years of practice.

He said the lesion was consistent with squamous cell carcinoma, or cancer eye which was a commonly identified cancer in farmed cattle in New Zealand.

Saunders had earlier admitted a Ministry for Primary Industries charge of recklessly ill-treating an animal, which carries a maximum penalty of a three-year prison term or a fine up to $75,000.

She was convicted in 2002 for failing to prevent or mitigate suffering in an animal, prompting Judge Tony Snell to say it was unusual that MPI was not seeking a disqualification from owning animals.

“I have a photo, and the growth was utterly obvious and would have been obvious to you,” he told Saunders, who stood in the dock in the Nelson District Court with her head hung.

“The cow suffered significant pain and it was all utterly unnecessary,” he said.

Saunders lived on a 20ha lifestyle block in Motueka, where at the time there were 29 beef cattle on the property, including nine animals owned by her son.

In November last year, an Animal Welfare Inspector visited Saunders’ property after a complaint about the state of one of the animals.

From the roadside, the inspector saw a Hereford cross cow with a large growth protruding from the side of its head.

The growth, which dripped pus and blood, covered the left side of the cow’s face and had completely enveloped the eye and surrounding facial tissue.

Bay was called to assess the animal, and the inspector contacted Saunders to let her know.

She confirmed the cow was hers and that she had removed a growth from its eye earlier that year.

She said she had removed the cancerous flesh with her hands and then applied an antiseptic wash before giving the cow a penicillin injection.

Saunders said she noticed the growth had returned weeks after the initial removal, but took no action to consult a vet or to have the animal euthanised.

Counsel for the prosecution, Julie Wotton said there was no dispute that Saunders had tried to treat the lesion on the cow’s face, but it wasn’t the appropriate treatment.

She outlined some difficult personal circumstances at that time and acknowledged that she may have “dropped the ball”.

Judge Snell said that did not minimise her culpability, and while she may have let herself down, she had let down the animal in her care.

“I’ve been a farmer and I know about these matters and this is a very large example – I’ve never seen one that big,” he said.

Judge Snell said it was also obvious the cow was in distress.

“Animals don’t have the ability to complain or call on someone else.

“People who look after them must be responsible,” he said.

Saunders met the inspector and the vet on site, who noted the growth had “completely overwhelmed” the eye and surrounding facial tissue on the left side of the cow’s head.

He also noted that the animal was highly agitated and that euthanasia was required as soon as possible, as the lesion was not treatable.

With Saunders’ agreement, the cow was immediately put down.

The vet found the lesion to be “highly advanced in size” and had destroyed the underlying eye and the tissues supporting the eye in the socket.

A festering cavity was in place of where the cow’s eye should have been.

The vet said there was a notable smell of decayed putrefied tissue and the associated bacterial infection.

MPI said cancer eye was treatable if caught early enough, but left untreated it almost always progressed.

In this case, the swelling of bone in the cow’s face suggested the cancer had spread.

Bay said the eye was a very sensitive organ; its degradation and collapse was a slow, and at times acutely painful, process.

He believed the growth had been present for more than six months causing the animal to suffer “prolonged, unreasonable and unnecessary pain and distress”.

Judge Snell said the reality was that Saunders should have phoned the vet in July when she tried to remove the growth herself or any time before November when authorities had to intervene.

“It was a very simple fix,” he said.

Defence lawyer Yvanca Clarisse said Saunders had since taken steps to ensure it didn’t happen again.

Judge Snell said if it did, she would be facing a “much more serious” penalty.

Jono Castano sparks romance rumours with Perth influencer after leaving VERY flirty comments on her Instagram… months after split from Simone Holtznagel

Jono Castano has sparked romance rumours with a Perth-based influencer months after splitting from his girlfriend Simone Holtznagel.

The 33-year-old celebrity personal trainer, who welcomed his first child earlier this year with Simone, confirmed the news of his breakup in July.

He has since sent tongues wagging after liking and leaving very flirty comments on Nilofar Khirzad’s recent Instagram posts.

Nilofar is a Perth-based influencer born in Afghanistan, and is the founder of fashion labels Khirzad and Khirzad Femme.

In one post, shared on October 11, the designer flaunted her own pieces from her brand — wearing a $290 burgundy blouse and $389 orange skirt.

Jono commented on her photo with a flirty fire emoji.

In a post from September, the Acero Gym owner commented ‘Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkk’ on a series of busty photos of Nilofar at a restaurant in Melbourne, to which she replied with three love heart emojis.

In the snaps, the influencer wore a black maxi skirt, a black cropped lace top worth $635 and a $680 jacket.

Jono has also rocked Nilofar’s menswear brand and featured on the label’s Instragram page on October 5.

The personal trainer and Simone, 31, quietly split around nine weeks after they welcomed their baby daughter Gia on Easter Sunday.

Jono finally confirmed news of their break-up in July, and Simone has since said she is raising Gia alone and cryptically remarked that she ‘couldn’t change’ her partner.

Simone later broke her silence on their split by saying she ‘couldn’t change’ the man that she loved as she hinted at the reasons behind their break-up.

‘I wanted to set an example for my daughter; that’s something that shifted for me. One day I was like, ‘What am I doing? This isn’t right.’ And I would hate if she was ever in this situation,’ she told Stellar.

‘You have to do what is right for you at the end of the day. No matter the number of promises or anything else that people make, when they show you who they are, believe them. Because you can’t change people.’

Simone also said she is content raising her baby Gia, six months, alone and that she is confident she made the right choice.

‘I’ve never felt more sure of anything, and I know I can do it by myself. It’s unfortunate that I’m mostly having to do it by myself, but I couldn’t think of it any other way, really,’ she said.

‘What I’m doing just feels very right for me, the most important thing to me is that Gia is happy and healthy, and that I’m happy too.’

In another swipe, Simone recently addressed the positives and negatives of doing motherhood ‘alone’, despite seemingly sharing parenting duties with Jono.

In a recent interview, Simone notably failed to mention Jono in an apparent swipe as she thanked her family and friends for supporting her.

When asked about the aspect of motherhood that surprised her, Simone told Women’s Health: ‘Positive: I can do this alone. Negative: I am doing this alone.

‘My family and friends have gone absolutely above and beyond for me, and I am lucky that the negatives feel a lot easier with them by my side.’

Simone welcomed her daughter Gia with Jono on Easter Sunday, but the couple went their separate ways just nine weeks later, with Jono confirming the news at the end of July.

‘Who knows what the future holds, our idea is just to be the best parents for Gia at this stage,’ he told Daily Mail Australia in a statement at the time.

A close friend of the couple then revealed the writing was on the wall for the end of Simone and Jono’s relationship for quite some time.

A source told The Daily Telegraph that several friends and family members warned Simone her model lifestyle was not compatible with Jono’s fitness influencer career.

Recently, Klopp’s fortune has been estimated at around £42m

Instead of locking horns with Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta, Klopp, 57, is looking healthier than ever with a glowing tan.

He has settled in his stunning Mallorca home he splashed £3.4million on and is enjoying time with wife, Ulla.

Klopp, who joined Instagram back in May, has been sharing his lifestyle with his fans.

His plans for his lavish villa create “an ecological family paradise” there.

That’s certainly more relaxing for the man who gave his all to the Reds and walked away because he was “running out of energy”.

Revealing why Mallorca caught his eye, he told the podcast Willipedia via Bild: “I’ve dreamed of having a house in the south all my life. I like the weather, the climate, I like the people.

“There are lots of things I like here and also people I already know. It’s not like I’m looking for new friends. I already have friends for life, and if some of them are here too, that’s cool.”

However, he made it clear he wasn’t going to stay in Mallorca all year round.

“I don’t want to emigrate. We go on holiday here every now and then,” Klopp added.

“But when I’m here, I want everything to be as I know it.

“That’s totally boring but the point is that I want to get to know a different life, but not somewhere in the jungle or on the mountain.”

Klopp has even found himself a new hobby – playing padel tennis while on the Balearic Island.

In the meantime, after recharging his batteries, Klopp has accepted a return to football with the Red Bull group.

He will take on an advisory role, worth a reported £10million-per-year, offering his insight into teams including RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg and New York Red Bulls.

SunSport takes a look at his epic Spanish existence.

Klopp earned a packet from football.

It’s believed his fortune stands at around the £42million mark, with Liverpool paying him handsomely and endorsement deals with brands such as Opel, Erdinger, VR-Bank, Snickers, Deutsche Vermogensberatung, Puma and Adidas adding to his bank balance.

Back in 2022, the German icon paid £3.4million for his Mallorcan villa – buying it off Swiss businessmen and artist Rolf Knie.

His first job was to completely renovate the 5,000-square metre property property.

As reported by German outlet Bild, Klopp turned the villa into a low-energy house with a unique interconnected heating and air conditioning system.

The systems work with a computer to make sure the temperature in the house stays the same, regardless of the weather conditions outside.

Futuristically, all electrical devices and appliances are controlled by using an app.

The idea behind the changes is to use less electricity, and the transformation is believed to reduce consumption by up to 75 per cent.

    Spending his time wisely

Being a former footballer who thrives on competition, Jurgen wasn’t going to completely give up on sport.

In his later years at Liverpool, he insisted on installing a padel court at the club’s Melwood training ground.

Wayne Rooney’s been belting out Ed Sheeran at karaoke, crashing the local pub quiz and living off takeaways as he enjoys ‘bachelor’ lifestyle in Plymouth – leaving wife Coleen ‘concerned’

Wayne Rooney is throwing himself into his new life in Plymouth.

The football star turned manager, 38, has had a tough start in the Devon city, with The Pilgrims sitting 18th in the Championship table with just two wins so far this season.

And photos of Wayne sat in the stands at Old Trafford last weekend has worried some of his fans, who remarked on his appearance and weight.

But the Manchester United and England legend’s ‘lonely bachelor lifestyle’ hundreds of miles from home has also reportedly been causing concern to those close to him, including his wife Coleen.

Father-of-four Rooney, whose team is playing Blackburn Rovers at Home Park today, is said to have been living a booze and takeaway-fuelled lifestyle since taking over as manager of Championship side Plymouth this summer.

And when he’s not in his flat planning for the next match or unwinding on his games console, he is known to go for a walk with friends and pop into one of his local drinking establishments.

One customer in a bar close to Wayne’s rented home in the city told MailOnline today that ‘he comes in quite often for a few drinks’, adding: ‘He’s definitely put on some weight since he’s been down here, maybe he’s getting stuck into the pasties.’

Shortly after being appointed as Plymouth's manager, Wayne Rooney was spotted belting out Ed Sheeran tunes on a late-night karaoke event at the Cider Press bar in the city's Barbican area

Wayne Rooney pictured watching his old club lose to Tottenham last Sunday – the former England and Manchester United striker’s appearance left some fans concerned

Isolated from his roots in Merseyside and after making a slow start to the high-pressure job, Rooney has been regularly spotted enjoying nights out in the city’s bars and nightclubs including quiz nights and karaoke nights belting out his favourite Ed Sheeran hits including Shape of You.

And while he is served healthy lunches at work, he is said to spend many evenings alone eating fast food, drinking and playing video games.

One source said recently: ‘Coleen’s told him no more takeaways, so she’s sorting out meal plans as well as making sure he’s busy when he’s not at work’.

After signing a three-year contract with the club, Rooney made the move 260 miles from his family home in Cheshire to a rented seaside flat in the Devon city.

When the move was first announced Wayne, Coleen and their kids Kai, 14, Klay. 10, Kit, eight, and Cass, five had been rumoured to be house hunting in the South West and particularly Salcombe, Britain’s most expensive seaside town nicknamed Chelsea-on-Sea, which is just under an hour’s drive from his new job.

But he and Coleen, also 38, ultimately decided moving the family to Devon would be too disruptive to the kids’ education and eldest son Kai’s promising football career in the Man Utd academy.

In a recent interview, Coleen said: ‘We thought long and hard about it (moving to Devon) but with the kids it didn’t work.

‘Kai’s now in year 10 and just starting GCSE prep and everything’s going well with football, and the other boys are all settled at school, so it didn’t seem fair on the children to pick them up and take them away, and start in a whole new place.’

Instead, Wayne cut short his BBC punditry role at the Euros in Germany and just days after returning home he moved alone to Devon to begin pre-season training on July 3.

Since then, Rooney is believed to be living in an upmarket apartment in the city’s luxurious Royal William Yard development.

Neighbours declined to comment when approached by MailOnline this week.

While a loft-style waterfront flat there is luxurious and comfortable, it is a far cry from Rooney’s £20 million six-bedroom Cheshire mansion which boasts a snooker room, a home cinema, indoor swimming pool, an underground spa, wine cellar, a stable area with space for 14 horses and a football pitch.

Another flat in the development is currently listed for almost £5,000 per month.

The family-loving star appears to be struggling to adapt to life away from Coleen, his partner since secondary school, and their children.

Alone in the flat much of the time, has been spotted out drinking regularly in Plymouth including joining pub quiz nights at the Seco Lounge, a cafe-bar a few minutes walk from his flat, as well as several other nearby bars.

One customer told MailOnline this week: ‘I last saw him a few weeks back but I think he comes in quite often for a few drinks. I heard he’s come in for the quiz before too but I’m not sure how well he did.

‘Judging by the number of selfies posted on Facebook groups he’s going out to bars a lot’.

In August, Rooney was spotted belting out Ed Sheeran tunes on a late-night karaoke event at the Cider Press bar in the city’s Barbican area.

Jarrod Styles, assistant manager, said: ‘He was definitely a better footballer than he is a singer.

‘He was an ideal customer, he was just chatting to people then he got up and sang Shape of You. He was working the crowd telling everybody to join in.’

The nearby Rakuda Bar also shared photos of two different visits from Rooney on Facebook, describing him as ‘Rakuda’s new regular’

Even before the latest pictures emerged, Wayne’s unhealthy lifestyle was causing concern back at home, during a visit with the kids early last month, Coleen is said to have been so shocked by her husband’s lifestyle she banned him from eating any more takeaways.

A source told Heat magazine: ‘Coleen got a bit of a shock when she saw Wayne recently. She’s worried he’s not taking enough care of himself now that he’s living on his own.

‘It was always going to be a big adjustment for him when he gave up playing football professionally. He was at the peak of his fitness during that time – Coleen made sure he ate healthily and he was always running about and playing footie with the boys. Now, she feels he’s not putting himself first, and worries that he’s struggling to cope without her looking after him.

‘She knows what Wayne can be like when he’s away – although the club has staff making the team healthy food for lunch, Wayne will be at home by himself in the evenings.

‘He’s not the best cook, so he’ll always take the easy option’.

Revealing that Coleen has already put plans in place to get her husband’s fitness back on track, the source added: ‘She’s decided to put him on a bit of health and fitness kick ahead of his 39th birthday next month, as she wants him to look and feel his best when they go away for a few days to celebrate.’

Representatives for Wayne and Coleen were contacted for comment.

Following a disastrous three-month spell managing Birmingham last season, Rooney endured a tough start to life in the South West where he failed to win any of Argyle’s first five league games. Recent wins against Sunderland and Luton have boosted morale, however.

Rooney is also known to be an avid gamer, playing hours of Fifa online to relieve stress. Before taking over at Plymouth, Rooney spoke about passing the time gaming with a team of YouTubers named Girth N Turf,

He told former teammate Gary Neville: ‘I know the rapper Aitch and they have got this team. I’d nothing else to do so I joined the team, it’s hilarious.’

The photo of Rooney watching United lose 3-0 to Tottenham while clad in a black coat was shared by Sky Sports on X and several users were quick to urge him to take care of himself.

‘He looks really bad’, one account posted in response.

‘Hang in there, Wayne,’ another said, perhaps in a tongue-in-cheek fashion.

‘Rooney looks older than his age,’ a third added. ‘He needs to take care of himself.’

A fourth account wrote ‘He looks too old’, accompanied by a crying emoji.

‘Is he suffocating, he’s all red?’ a fifth asked. ‘Asking out of concern.’

Rooney confessed in 2022 that he only had one suit that still fit him after being ribbed over his appearance by Jamie Carragher on Sky’s Monday Night Football.

Carragher noticed Rooney was wearing the same suit, shirt and tie combination from his Premier League Hall of Fame induction a fortnight before the show.

Rooney responded: ‘Do you know what? There’s a reason behind that.

‘Obviously, over the last year, I’ve put a little bit of weight on. So it’s actually the only suit what’ll fit me at the minute – I’ve got to get the most out of it.’

Rooney has previously opened up on his fight to avoid piling on the pounds during his trophy-laden playing career, writing in his 2012 book My Decade In The Premier League: ‘I’m like most blokes, I put on a few pounds after a holiday.

‘Even if I don’t train for a week, I put on two or three.’

  • The 3 Charlton Athletic players we can see leaving in January

The 3 Charlton Athletic players we can see leaving in January

Charlton Athletic lost a few of their key players from last season, and there may be more departures during the January transfer window, especially if a new contract cannot be agreed for one of their most promising youngsters.

Charlton Athletic‘s three most influential players last season were arguably Golden Boot winning striker Alfie May, captain George Dobson, and rapid winger Corey Blackett-Taylor.

Now, less than a year since all three were playing for the Addicks, May is scoring goals for fun in League One with Birmingham City, Dobson is impressing for Wrexham as they make their mark in the third tier, and Blackett-Taylor has scored his first goal in the Championship for Derby County.

Meanwhile, Charlton have been in a difficult run of form which has seen them drop into the bottom half of the League One table, following an excellent start to the season that had seen them among the promotion contenders.

Manager Nathan Jones is likely to want to strengthen his squad during the next transfer window, and that could mean that a couple of players are allowed to depart, although there may also be interest in someone that the Addicks would much rather keep hold of.

Let’s take a look at three players who could leave SE7 in January as things stand.

    3 Terry Taylor

    Terry Taylor

Midfielder Terry Taylor signed for Charlton from Burton Albion last summer, before an injury limited him to just five league appearances during his debut season.

The 23-year-old was linked with a move away during the summer transfer window, with fellow League One sides Rotherham United and Barnsley reportedly interested in taking the former Wales youth international on loan, as per Football Insider.

Despite Taylor returning to fitness, it seems as though he is surplus to requirements under Jones, a suggestion which is backed up by the fact that he has yet to make an appearance in the league so far this term.

Therefore, it would be no surprise to see him leave the club during the January transfer window.

    2 Tayo Edun

Tayo Edun featured 26 times for Charlton in the third tier last season, although he is another player who has yet to make a league appearance so far during this campaign.

The left-back did score during the Addicks’ EFL Trophy victory over Cambridge United last month, but that was seemingly not enough to force himself back into Jones’ immediate plans.

With Josh Edwards and Thierry Small ahead of Edun in the pecking order at left wing-back, there is every chance that the 26-year-old will depart during the January transfer window.

    1 Miles Leaburn

    Miles Leaburn

Charlton supporters will not want to think about the possibility of Miles Leaburn leaving so soon after he has returned to first team action, especially amid the Addicks’ lack of threat in the final third, but there is a chance that the striker will move on at the start of next year.

The 20-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, which is likely to alert a number of clubs, as there has previously been interest from the likes of Chelsea and Brentford in his services.

Charlton will hope that they can convince Leaburn to continue his development at a club where he will be a key player, although if he does not sign a new contract, they may well decide to cash in on the forward in January to avoid losing him when his contract comes to an end in 2025.

Fears Home and Away veteran is leaving the show after they notice bombshell detail in racy photos

Home and Away fans have been whipped into a frenzy after discovering a worrying photo posted to social media, leading them to believe a series veteran is leaving.

Fans recently noticed that actress Emily Weir, who has played Mackenzie Booth on the show since 2019, is currently on a big US holiday with former co-stars Sarah Roberts and Tim Franklin.

It recently emerged that Emily’s three-year contract on the series is soon to expire, leading fans to speculate her ‘holiday’ may actually be a farewell party.

Alongside a happy snap of Emily sunbaking by a hotel pool, one fan wrote: ‘Emily’s contract is up and she has been travelling with Sarah Roberts and Tim Franklin.’

Meanwhile, Sarah shared a bikini snap to her Instagram account which captured Emily rocking her best angles on the California holiday in a very skimpy two-piece while having fun in a pool with Tim.

Sarah, 39, and Tim, 34, appeared on the long-running Channel Seven soap opera alongside Emily, but they both left in 2021.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Channel Seven for comment.

Last month, Emily and her co-star Tristan Gorey made the bombshell admission they considered leaving the series following a recent shock death on the show.

The pair, who play lovebirds Mackenzie and Levi on the series, admitted they were affected by the recent character death of Felicity Newman, played by Jacqui Purvis.

‘I don’t ever want Mackenzie to die. I want her to leave the Bay, so there’s always a place where I can come back to,’ Emily, 33, told Yahoo Lifestyle.

The brunette bombshell added if her character had to die she would like it to be in a very dramatic and memorable manner.

‘If I had to, I’d love to be in a gunfight or something really left of field. Really do some martial arts, like a fight scene or something.’

However, it has recently emerged that Emily's three-year contract on the series is soon to expire, leading fans to speculate her 'holiday' may be a farewell party for her, as she leaves the show for good

In August, fans were left devastated when fan-favourite character Felicity Newman, played by Jacqui Purvis, collapsed in shock scenes.

In the clip which had fans in tears, Felicity suddenly fell to the ground when her vision went blurry during an emotional conversation with ex-husband Tane Parata.

The character was then rushed to hospital in critical condition, as promos confirmed she will die and actress Jacqui will move on from Summer Bay.

A football match in Colombia had to be suspended after mass violence broke out in the stands, reportedly leaving 20 people injured.

Atletico Nacional and Atletico Junior were in the second half of their Prima A clash when fights between the two sets of fans caused the match to be halted.

After Marino Hinestroza netted to make it 2-0 to the hosts, away supporters appeared to break into the home section.

Once it became clear that a mass brawl had broken out, referee Nolberto Ararat decided to pause the match with 55 minutes on the clock, and it did not restart.

Reports have suggested that several of the 20 fans who had been harmed were taken to medical centres near the Atanasio Girardot Stadium.

Many of the injured were also treated in the lower tier of the stadium by the Red Cross, according to El Colombiano.

Following the horrific scenes of violence, Medellin’s Secretary of Security, Manuel Villa, chastised the fans involved.

‘Football should be a celebration of peace,’ said Villa. The culture of football is a collective commitment.

‘But if someone doesn’t understand that, they have no place in this celebration: those masquerading as fans who create these situations and act outside the law are not fans, but criminals and should be treated as such. Irresponsible!

‘There will be sanctions, and measures will be taken as necessary.’

Footage of the brawl captured from the stands suggests that one visiting fan wielded a knife on Nacional supporters.

As the chaotic scenes worsened, fans in the area could be seen dashing away from the melee in the upper tier, attempting to make their way down to the stand below.

The brawl even caused some fans to take to the pitch in fear before riot police intervened in an attempt to halt the fights.

Colombian media outlet El Heraldo, have since reported that stun grenades could be heard going off in an attempt to disperse crowds.

The stadium was eventually evacuated by the police with a new date for the fixture unknown at this time.

  • Freddie Flintoff met Tony Blair after night on booze and partied until 6am with Oasis before leaving party lifestyle behind

Freddie Flintoff met Tony Blair after night on booze and partied until 6am with Oasis before leaving party lifestyle behind

Andrew Flintoff, affectionately known as Freddie, had quite the career on and off the cricket field, with many of his stories legendary.

However, as he prepares to start life as the England Lions coach, those days of partying are over for a variety of reasons.

Flintoff epitomised everything great about English cricket

As a player, the Preston-born all-rounder was captivating and could deliver moments of magic from nowhere.

He became a modern-day icon, and he used to enjoy his fair share of partying and celebrating.

Flintoff displayed great promise as a cricketer early into his career, but drinking was with him from very young.

In his autobiography, Ashes to Ashes, he admitted that one day he turned up to practice ‘smelling of booze’.

Then, when on tour at the age of 17, Flintoff consumed ten pints of Guinness.

Gradually, as his senior career progressed, Flintoff mainly only drank to celebrate, with a few evenings going down in legend.

One in particular will always be fondly remembered by England fans because it was the night Flintoff and co won the 2005 Ashes.

That series, which England won 2-1, is widely regarded as the greatest ever.

After sealing the win at The Oval, the England players partied all night before heading off to Downing Street the day after for a meeting with the Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

Then, a rooftop bus parade through the centre of London culminated in a huge celebration in Trafalgar Square with 250,000 fans.

Speaking to talkSPORT in 2023 about those celebrations, former England bowler Steve Harmison recalled the team’s boozing.

He said: “Freddie and I didn’t leave the hotel bar.

“Freddie was one of the only ones who kept drinking all the way through. I think I left at 6:45am, but nobody slept.

“It was a great celebration. Freddie tried to sing Suspicious Minds in front of 250,000 people. He got the first line out before they cut the microphone, which is a shame because the big lad can sing, but not after a night-and-a-half on the sauce.”

Inspiring Andrew Flintoff speech has fans tipping him for future England Cricket role

Along with those legendary 2005 scenes, Flintoff also enjoyed a wild night with Oasis and Kasabian in 2009 after delaying an operation to take part in the Ashes.

England won the first Test in Cardiff, and Flintoff headed to London for a quiet drink in The Landmark hotel, but it turned into carnage.

Flintoff stayed up all evening with the two British bands.

Speaking about that experience to The Sun, he said: “The night was certainly wild, like something you would imagine in the early Seventies with the Rolling Stones.

“Everyone was hammered, the staff were trying to calm it down, guests were complaining. Looking back, part of me was celebrating a great Test match and part wanted to forget about my knee and let off steam.”

Flintoff went to bed at 6am before heading to see a specialist at 8am, where he was told he would need an operation, and that marked the end of his Test career after four years of constant injuries.

Adding to his initial story, he said: “I was hammered and my career was ending.”

Flintoff enjoyed a great night with the Gallagher brothers before finding out some crushing news

It also marked a turning point in Flintoff’s relationship with drinking.

With no more reasons to celebrate with his teammates, the all-rounder realised that he was drinking to hide his real feelings.

He said: “When I was drinking, the problem lay in the cover-up.

“I was boozing to try to change the way I felt and that’s when it became a problem. If I latched on, I would get into drinking, and not just for one session. It would go on for weeks and that couldn’t continue.”

So, he quit and has been sober for years, and despite enjoying some great nights, he’s happier to be off the booze.

‘Why am I in tears?’ Father-daughter duo dance at competition together, leaving the internet emotional, Lifestyle News

When children perform on the big stage, their parents would often come down to watch and show their love.

But Jay Sng didn’t want to just be supportive by sitting in the audience — he wanted to join his daughter, 7-year-old Jaylee, on stage.

So, he practised hard with her and together, they competed in the 25th Singapore Regional Competition on Sept 5.

This was organised by The Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing Singapore and held at Anglo-Chinese Junior College’s Faith Centre for Performing Arts.

Jay shared their performance on TikTok on Sept 7.

“Our first competition as father and daughter!” he captioned proudly.

In the viral video, which at the time of writing has more than 891,000 views and 111,000 likes, Jay and Jaylee danced to the song A Whole New World from Disney movie Aladdin.

Jay himself was decked out in a costume to look like Aladdin while little Jaylee wore a beautiful red outfit, similar to something Princess Jasmine wore in the show.

Apart from prancing around on stage, the pair shocked the audience with several tricky dance moves.

Near the start of the performance, Jaylee did a cartwheel on her father’s back.

And later on, Jay joined his daughter and did several cartwheels across the stage — an impressive feat.

Needless to say, the crowd went wild and cheered the father-daughter duo on.

Other impressive moves include Jay flipping Jaylee onto his shoulders and swinging her around as she held a dance pose.

In the comments, several emotional netizens shared that the dance performance had left them with tears in their eyes.

“Oh my gosh, why am I in tears?” one said.

Several others said that Jaylee was a lucky girl to have a father like Jay.

One netizen said that the performance was a “huge core memory” for Jaylee.

To that, Jay replied saying he had told Jaylee before that if he were to “leave this world suddenly”, she can remember that “daddy will always be dancing with [her] in [her] heart”.

In response to another comment, Jay revealed that he was actually the oldest contestant on stage in the history of their dance competition.

There was also one netizen who urged Jay to recreate this when Jaylee was older and married.

To that, he jokingly said: “But my back!”

AsiaOne has reached out to Jay for more details.
