    Why are lone homes left standing after the fires? It’s not entirely luck

    Emails and videos of burned buildings in Los Angeles next to those left standing have been flying back and forth among architects, builders and fire safety specialists around the world.

    For many homeowners, like Enrique Balcazar, the sometimes scattershot nature of the carnage can seem like random chance. Balcazar, a real estate agent, posted video that showed little more than chimneys remaining of most homes on his block after fire leapt through his Altadena neighborhood. Balcazar stood on his neighbor’s destroyed classic Mustang to douse his smoldering roof, but his home was otherwise fine.

    “It’s an older house and it still has the old wood sidings,” Balcazar said. “To me there’s nothing explainable in logical or scientific reason of why my house would not have burned.”

    Many experts say luck does play a part. After all, wind can shift 180 degrees in a split second, pushing fire away from your house and towards a neighbor’s. But they also say there are many ways that homes can be made less vulnerable to fire.

    “Because there are, say, 50 ways a fire can burn your house,” said Greg Faulkner of Faulkner Architects in California, who has focused on less combustible home exteriors for more than a decade. “If you eliminate half of those, or three-quarters of them, that’s not luck, that’s increasing your odds.”

    People in fire country generally know that trees, landscaping and wood fences near homes can be a fire risk. Architects and contractors are going beyond that, using newer materials and techniques in roofing, walls and windows to keep buildings standing. The measures do add cost to the homes — around 3% to 6%, Faulkner said, or as much as 10% for the most robust protection.

    Many of these experts no longer use wood siding. Where it is used, or still allowed, it needs to have a fire-resistant barrier underneath, often made of gypsum, the same material used to make drywall. That way if the wood catches fire, it takes longer for the heat to reach inside the home

    But even with that, you’re still putting a combustible material on the building, said Richard Schuh, with Nielsen : Schuh Architects. “So that would be something we would avoid. Use of fire-resistant materials is critical.”

    Stucco, a cement material, is a common exterior for Southern California houses and it’s fire-resistant. Reviewing AP photographs showing buildings still standing, Arnold Tarling, who has four decades experience in fire protection and building inspection in Britain, said houses with stucco walls appeared to survive the Los Angeles fires better. Yet if more of them had had a layer of gypsum beneath the stucco, it would have given more protection from the heat, he said.

    Windows are a huge factor in whether a home burns down, because so much heat is transmitted through them. Double-pane windows significantly slow heat coming from the burning building next door.

    “The outside layer protects the inside layer until it fails,” said Schuh. Codes in many places require one of the two panes to be tempered, which is much more resistant to heat than conventional glass, he said.

    Tarling noted one intact Malibu beachfront home, surrounded by gutted buildings. He speculated that the fact that no windows faced a neighbor helped protect it because radiated heat couldn’t penetrate as easily.

    In his buildings, Faulkner builds in fire shutters that can slide closed and cover the windows.

    Then there’s the roof — a convenient landing pad for fire embers.

    Simpler roof lines can allow red-hot embers to slide off. Spanish Mission, for example, is an iconic Los Angeles style — part of what says “Hollywood” in movies about the city, for example, as well as a reminder of its Mexican and Spanish history. That style doesn’t always have simple roof lines — the knee walls that are common on Mission-style roofs create corners.

    “The embers could, just like snow, gather in that corner,” Faulkner said.

    Many roofs in the U.S. are covered in asphalt. Areas that are designated as wildfire-prone in California – an ever-growing area – are required to use roofing that delays the transfer of heat to the inside of the building, called one-hour or Class A.

    Still, asphalt is a petroleum product. Some building professionals prefer metal, which doesn’t burn. Metal has its own downside, though: It conducts heat. Putting a layer of gypsum under a metal roof is becoming a common practice in some areas.

    Maybe as important as which material is used on a roof is whether the roof offers fire a way to get in. Here, as in so many tradeoffs, one effort to do good conflicts with another: Contractors have been more careful over the years to make sure moisture doesn’t build up in attics by making sure air circulates, using those vents that are visible on many roofs or under eaves.

    But in a powerful fire, Schuh says, “if you’re on the side where the wind is putting pressure against the house, it’s also blowing the flames into the house like a blow torch,” and fire gets in through the vents.

    On the other side of the house, it can create a vacuum, several experts said, sucking fire in.

    But you can’t easily just eliminate roof ventilation because it will cause moisture problems, said Cesar Martin Gomez, an architect at the University of Navarra, Spain, who’s worked for 25 years in building services.

    Faulkner said in some buildings he’s eliminating the need for ventilation in the roof structure by sealing the spaces. Schuh is using a cover on roof vents that can actually respond to fire with a mesh that closes.

    Martin Gomez noted that in some parts of Australia, new homes are required to have water tanks. “If each home has the ability to protect itself, fire won’t be able to spread as much,” he said.

    And some homes in the U.S. are now built with sprinkler systems for the outside of the house, not just the inside. It sprays water with a soapy solution to make it flow over the surface of the building, Schuh said.

    “You’re adding one more layer of protection to your building, and that’s more of a priority now than ever because your insurance company may or not be around for you,” he said.

    Will TikTok be banned this month?

    That’s the pressing question keeping creators and small business owners in anxious limbo as they await a decision that could upend their livelihoods. The fate of the popular app will be decided by the Supreme Court, which will hear arguments on Jan. 10 over a law requiring TikTok to break ties with its Chinese-based parent company, ByteDance, or face a U.S. ban.

    At the heart of the case is whether the law violates the First Amendment with TikTok and its creator allies arguing that it does. The U.S. government, which sees the platform as a national security risk, says it does not.

    For creators, the TikTok doomsday scenarios are nothing new since President-elect Donald Trump first tried to ban the platform through executive order during his first term. But despite Trump’s recent statements indicating he now wants TikTok to stick around, the prospect of a ban has never been as immediate as it is now with the Supreme Court serving as the final arbiter.

    If the government prevails as it did in a lower court, TikTok says it would shut down its U.S. platform by Jan. 19, leaving creators scrambling to redefine their futures.

    “A lot of my other creative friends, we’re all like freaking out. But I’m staying calm,” said Gillian Johnson, who benefited financially from TikTok’s live feature and rewards program, which helped creators generate higher revenue potential by posting high-quality original content. The 22-year-old filmmaker and recent college graduate uses her TikTok earnings to help fund her equipment for projects such as camera lens and editing software for her short films “Gambit” and “Awaken! My Neighbor.”

    Johnson said the idea of TikTok going away is “hard to accept.”

    Many creators have taken to TikTok to voice their frustrations, grappling with the possibility that the platform they’ve invested so much in could soon disappear. Online communities risk being disrupted, and the economic fallout could especially be devastating for those who mainly depend on TikTok and have left full-time jobs to build careers and incomes around their content.

    For some, the uncertainty has led them to question whether to continue creating content at all, according to Johnson, who says she knows creators who have been thinking about quitting. But Nicla Bartoli, the vice president of sales at The Influencer Marketing Factory, said the creators she has interreacted with have not been too worried since news about a potential TikTok ban has come up repeatedly over the years, and then died down.

    “I believe a good chunk think it is not going to happen,” said Bartoli, whose agency works to pair influencers and brands.

    It’s unclear how quickly the Supreme Court will issue a decision. But the court could act swiftly to block the law from going into effect if at least five of the nine justices deem it unconstitutional.

    Trump, for his part, has already asked the justices to put a pause on the ban so he could weigh in after he takes office. In a brief — written by his pick for solicitor general — Trump called the First Amendment implications of a TikTok ban “sweeping and troubling” and said he wants a “negotiated resolution” to the issue, something the Biden administration had pursued to no avail.

    While waiting for the dust to settle in Washington, some creators are exploring alternatives ways to promote themselves or their business, encouraging users to follow them on other social media platforms or are investing more time producing non-TikTok content.

    Johnson says she is already strategizing her next move and exploring alternative opportunities. While she hasn’t found a place quite like TikTok, she’s begun to spend more of her time on other platforms, such as Instagram and YouTube, both of whom are expected to benefit financially if TikTok vanishes.

    According to a report by Goldman Sachs, the so-called creator economy, which has been fueled in part by TikTok, could be worth $480 billion by 2027.

    Because the opportunity to monetize content exists across a range of platforms, a vast amount of creators have already diversified their social media presence. However, many TikTok creators have credited the platform — and its algorithm — with giving them a type of exposure they did not receive on other platforms. Some say it has also boosted and provided opportunities for creators of color and those from other marginalized groups.

    Despite fears about the fate of TikTok, industry analysts note creators are generally avoiding making any big changes, like abandoning platform, until something actually happens.

    “I’m anxious but also trying to be hopeful in a weird way,” said Brandon Hurst, who credits TikTok with rescuing his business from obscurity and propelling it into rapid growth.

    A year after joining TikTok, the 30-year-old Hurst, who sells plants, said his sales doubled, outpacing the traction he’d struggled to gain on Instagram. He built his clientele through the live feature on TikTok, which has helped him sell more than 77,000 plants. The business has thrived so much that he says he now employs five people, including his husband and mom.

    “For me, this has been my sole way of doing business,” Hurst said.

    Billion Dollar Boy, a New York-based influencer marketing agency, has advised creators to download all of their TikTok content into a personal portfolio, which is especially important for those who post primarily on the platform, said Edward East, the agency’s founder and group CEO. This can help them quickly build their audiences elsewhere. Plus it can serve as a resume for brands who might want to partner with them for product advertisements, East said.

    But until the deadline of Jan. 19 comes around, East said creators should continue to post regularly on TikTok, which has 170 million monthly U.S. users and remains highly effective in reaching audiences.

    If the Supreme Court does not delay the ban, as Trump is asking them to do, app stores and internet service providers would be required to stop providing service to TikTok by Jan. 19. That means anyone who doesn’t have TikTok on their phone would be unable to download it. TikTok users would continue to have access, but the prohibitions — which will prevent them from updating the app — will eventually make the app “unworkable,” the Justice Department has said.

    TikTok said in court documents that it estimates a one-month shutdown would cause the platform to lose approximately a third of its daily users in the U.S. The company argues a shutdown, even if temporary, will cause it irreparable harm, a legal bar used by judges to determine whether to put the brakes on a law facing a challenge. In under three weeks, Americans will know if the Supreme Court agrees.

    Dan Ashworth left his job as the sporting director of Manchester United after just five months as both parties agreed he was not a good ‘fit’ for the club.

    Ashworth officially began work at Old Trafford on July 1 after a lengthy period of gardening leave at his former club Newcastle United.

    However, his shock departure today is said to have been finalised in a meeting with United CEO Omar Berrada after last night’s defeat by Nottingham Forest. 

    There is not believed to have been a row but it was clear to all parties that the relationship was not working and Ashworth was not the fit club chiefs had hoped it would be.

    Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s part-owner, was reportedly pivotal in the decision.

    United are not thought to be searching for a replacement at this stage.

    United say the agreement to rip up Ashworth’s contract was mutual – sharing the following statement: ‘Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.

    ‘We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.’

    Ashworth, 53, was appointed to oversee football performance and recruitment at the club and reported to Berrada, a recent arrival from Manchester City.

    In turn, Jason Wilcox, United’s technical director, worked under Ashworth as part of the new-look hierarchy implemented by Ratcliffe. 

    Ashworth was involved in the Red Devils’ £200million spending spree during the summer with Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee also recruited as part of the substantial outlay.

    He was subsequently quoted in the statements confirming each signing.

    Ashworth was also part of the executive team that made the decision to hand Erik ten Hag a new contract and then sack him just a matter of months later.

    His appointment at United came at the end of painstaking negotiations with Newcastle. Ashworth informed the Tyneside club that he wanted to move to Old Trafford in February and was reportedly open to taking them to arbitration.

    Ashworth joined Newcastle after resigning from his technical director role at Brighton in February 2022. He previously held the same post with the Football Association. 

    Ratcliffe brutally described United as a ‘mediocre’ club paying the price for ‘very poor’ recruitment in a bombshell interview with fanzine United We Stand. 

    ‘The club has drifted for a long period of time, a decade or so. Manchester United has become mediocre,’ Ratcliffe said.

    In a banner year for women’s professional sports, athletes who dominate their game are reaping the financial benefits.

    The WNBA is a leading example. Last month, it wrapped up a historic season that notched all-time viewership and attendance records while racking up brand deals and corporate sponsorships for its players along the way. On Sunday, the league will hold its draft lottery for the 2025 season.

    Many of the WNBA’s young stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese brought deals with them from their playing days in college, including name, image and likeness agreements that became endorsements with such companies as Nike, Reebok and Gatorade. Players of different backgrounds landed a variety of other endorsement deals with companies like CarMax and State Farm.

    But for all those enjoying their newfound riches, there are still some players who are being left out. The WNBA recently partnered with Kim Kardashian’s underwear brand SKIMS, which featured women of color as well as LGBTQ+ players in its ads. The company received pushback, however, for excluding masculine-presenting athletes in its May campaign.

    “Not the papis of the league being forgotten again,” Phoenix Mercury’s Natasha Cloud posted on X after SKIMS’ “Fits Everybody” campaign dropped.

    Two-time all star Natasha Howard of the Dallas Wings also criticized the campaign, saying it felt “like a smack” for the league’s more masculine presenting players, and that it is “absolutely” harder for Black LGBTQ+ athletes to get brand deals.

    “I feel like a lot of people don’t want to see queer or lesbian people on the face of anything,” Howard told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

    Cloud and Howard decided to forge their own path. Both women scored partnerships with Woxer, a Latina and LGBTQ+-owned women’s boxer brand that offers a line designed for gender nonconforming customers.

    Miami-based Alexandra Fuente, Woxer’s founder, said that working with Howard, Cloud, and Las Vegas Aces’ Kierstan Bell “was just a great match,” and the company is planning to collaborate with many more female athletes in the future.

    “I think the major brands give deals to people that fit the box, and that is a great thing because it leaves opportunity for brands like us,” Fuente said. “For us … everybody’s in the box.”

    But for mainstream brands, partnering with athletes who don’t fit the traditional mold in today’s increasingly polarized cultural landscape fraught with anti-diversity backlash creates “this collective risk that some brands are unwilling to take,” according to Ketra Armstrong, University of Michigan professor of Sport Management and director of the Center for Race & Ethnicity in Sport.

    Many brands are ”middle of the road, and want to be safe, and don’t want to offend other pockets of their consumers,” Armstrong said.

    Risa Isard, assistant professor of sport management at the University of Connecticut, analyzed online articles from ESPN, CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated from the 2020 WNBA season and her peer-reviewed study found that Black WNBA athletes received less media attention than white WNBA athletes. Additionally, Black athletes who did not present in traditionally feminine ways “receive the least amount of media attention, while white athletes have the freedom to express their gender in a variety of ways and still capture media interest.”

    Media attention matters because it shapes athletes’ perceived advertising value for brand deals, and is especially important for WNBA players since their salaries are much lower than NBA players and they instead depend on endorsements and playing abroad offseason despite safety concerns to pay the bills, Isard said.

    But brands are missing the mark when they overlook Black LGBTQ+ women, said University of Massachusetts Amherst sport management professor Ajhanai Keaton, who studies the intersection of race and gender identity.

    Like some of its players, the WNBA’s fan base also holds fluid gender identities, plus companies may underestimate how much consumers with different identities admire and relate to LGBTQ+ players, Keaton said. “Sponsors and brands are way behind the curve on this.”

    Nonetheless, there has been progress, including in other women’s sports like soccer.

    Briana Scurry, goalkeeper for the legendary squad that won the 1999 World Cup, was one of the only openly gay “out” players of her time. Scurry, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, said sponsorship opportunities in women’s soccer have improved significantly since her time playing.

    After making a crucial penalty kick save that helped clinch her team’s World Cup win, Scurry said she “thought for sure that I would have a landslide of sponsorship deals,” but “I just didn’t.”

    At first she thought it was because she was a goalkeeper. “And then it dawned on me, sadly, that it may have to do with my color and/or my sexual orientation,” she said. “I didn’t have any other explanation for it.”

    Today, women’s soccer “has come a long way,” according to the former Washington Spirit assistant coach. When Scurry played, she was the only player of color with a starting role. Now, Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson make up the U.S. Olympic team’s formidable front three, and Scurry said she saw several advertising and marketing campaigns reflect that star power.

    “That made me very happy,” she said.

    And endorsement opportunities that evaded Scurry 25 years ago? They’re now beginning to surface.

    “I am having quite a bit of success now that I didn’t have then,” she said, which makes her hopeful that sponsorship opportunities for Black LGBTQ+ female athletes also will continue to grow.

    “Women’s sports is now seen as a business proposition,” Scurry said. “No longer is it a charity.”

    For anyone who questions the marketing potential and social capital of Black LGBTQ+ athletes, Keaton added, they need only glance at the comment sections of their Instagram posts, which are filled with fire emojis, heart eyes emojis, and, “‘Where’d you get those shoes?’”

    Just as the frustrations with the first College Football Playoff rankings were settling in, the sport went on its usual path of chaos — completely changing the landscape of the projected playoff field.

    The rankings got flipped upside down when Georgia fell flat against Mississippi and Miami couldn’t stay perfect when it faced Georgia Tech. Consequently, some teams saw their playoff chances boosted while others are feeling uncertainty in qualifying for the 12-team field.

    There’s three weeks left in the regular season − and conference championship week − thus there’s still plenty of chances for the rankings to drastically change. The moves in the second rankings were mostly justified, but still, some teams got the short end of the stick.

    MARQUETTE — Negaunee and Munising slipped a bit while Marquette was able to maintain its position in Upper Peninsula high school football polls after all three area teams lost last week.

    And Ishpeming made a move back into the top five after the Hematites posted a rather convincing win.

    All this is included in the weekly rankings among U.P. teams conducted each week by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

    Ishpeming blew out Sturgeon Bay Sevastopol, Wisconsin, 54-0 on Friday to move back into the No. 5 position in the eight-player ratings, but just barely.

    The Hematites (4-2) drew two votes as previous fifth-place Munising (5-2), along with Bessemer (4-3) and Rudyard (4-3), each garnered a single vote and just missed the top five.

    Munising lost a narrow 29-28 decision to Rudyard to slip in the rankings.

    The top four teams in eight-player had minimal changes after each won last week. No. 1 Forest Park (7-0) remains one vote ahead of No. 2 Pickford (7-0) as the Trojans bounced Ironwood 58-8 and the Panthers pulled off an almost identical 58-0 shellacking of St. Ignace.

    No. 3 North Central (6-1) switched spots with No. 4 Norway (6-1), with the Jets outscoring Ontonagon 78-43 and Knights sneaking by Newberry 36-30.

    In 11-player, Negaunee (5-2) slipped a position to No. 5 after the Miners lost 34-19 after hosting unanimous No. 1 Menominee. This was easily the Maroons closest game so far this season.

    Marquette (5-2) held onto No. 3 despite falling to Petoskey 28-23.

    Iron Mountain (7-0) remained unbeaten and bumped past Negaunee into the No. 4 spot after the Mountaineers flew past Bark River-Harris 40-7.

    Kingsford (7-0) remained a consensus No. 2 after handling Westwood 34-6, while Calumet (4-3) picked up a single vote after downing Hancock 47-18.

    The Associated Press also releases statewide rankings for each MHSAA division, but those weren’t available by early Tuesday evening.

    In area games this week, there are a quintet of contests scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday — Gwinn at L’Anse, Hancock at Westwood, Houghton at Negaunee, St. Ignace at Munising and Iron Mountain at Manistique. The Mid Peninsula at Ishpeming game also scheduled for that night was previously canceled.

    On Saturday, Superior Central hosts Carney-Nadeau at 4 p.m., while Marquette entertains Cadillac at 6 p.m.

    Meta’s Oversight Board says viral video left on Facebook threatened LGBTQ+ people in Nigeria

    ABUJA, Nigeria — Meta’s oversight board expressed serious concern Tuesday over the company’s failure to take down a viral graphic video showing two men bleeding after they were apparently beaten up for being allegedly gay.

    The video was posted in Nigeria, one of more than 30 of Africa’s 54 countries where homosexuality is criminalized by laws that garner broad public support despite constitutional guarantees of freedoms. Such laws are often used to target and illegally arrest people suspected of being gay, with abuses against them often ignored.

    The report said the damage done by the video, which was viewed more than 3.6 million times between December 2023 and February this year, was “immediate and impossible to undo.”

    The board said the content “shared and mocked violence and discrimination” and though reported multiple times and reviewed by three human moderators, it stayed on Facebook for about five months despite breaking four different rules.

    “With the video left up, the odds of someone identifying the men and of the post encouraging users to harm other LGBTQIA+ people in Nigeria increased,” the panel said. “Even after it was removed, the Board’s research shows there were still sequences of the same video remaining on Facebook.”

    In the video, two men were seen bleeding as a crowd of people interrogated them about their identity and sexual orientation.

    Meta couldn’t be reached for immediate comment.

    The company admitted two errors regarding the said video, the panel said, in that its automated systems identified the language spoken in the video as English while it was the Igbo language spoken in southeastern Nigeria “but not supported by Meta for content moderation at-scale,” and that Meta’s human review teams also misidentified the language as Swahili.

    “This raises concerns about how content in unsupported languages is treated, the choice of languages the company supports for at-scale review and the accuracy of translations provided to reviewers working across multiple languages,” the panel said.

    In its report, the board recommended Meta update its Coordinating Harm and Promoting Crime Community Standard to include clear examples of “outing-risk groups,” conduct an assessment of enforcement accuracy of the prohibition on exposing the identity or locations of those alleged to be a member of such groups, ensure language detection systems identify content in unsupported languages and provide accurate translations while routing content for review.
