  • Ingebrigtsen and Kerr left trailing by Nuguse’s sprint in Olympic rematch | Athletics

Over the past 18 months, we have become used to seeing Josh Kerr slugging it out for gold and glory in the world’s biggest 1500m races. But when the Scot squeezed hard on the trigger over the final 200m at Zurich’s Weltklasse on Thursday night he found nothing left in the barrel.

Kerr wasn’t the only one struggling to keep up with the searing pace. The Olympic champion Cole Hocker of the US was also too far back when the pacemaker Elliot Giles dropped out with 400m to go and Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen kicked for home.

Suddenly a race that had been billed as the rematch of the big four in the Paris Games boiled down to two men: Ingebrigtsen and US star Yared Nuguse.

Ingebrigtsen was the fastest man in the field, and broke the longstanding 3,000m world record last week. But he has been sick ever since. It meant that his kick for home lacked drive and conviction. Gradually Nuguse, who won bronze in Paris, moved alongside him before kicking clear for a shock win in 3 mins 29.21 sec.

Ingebrigtsen was second in 3:29.52, with Hocker nearly a second back in third. Kerr, who had talked a good game, faded to finish fifth in 3:31.46.

“This race was so highly anticipated and I knew that it was going to be quick,” said Nuguse. “Everyone could have got this race. I am glad I was able to win.”

Ingebrigtsen was not too disappointed with his performance. “My race was better than I expected it to be yesterday,” he said. “I still haven’t recovered. It was worth it to come here and race.”

It was so cold and wet in Zurich that the high jumpers had blankets on to keep themselves warm in between attempts and there was surface water on the track. However that did not stop the Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo putting in the performance of the night.

The 21-year-old from Botswana looked to be beaten by American Kenny Bednarek, but in the final 10 metres he got up to win in 19.55, less than a tenth of a second slower than his time in Paris. Bednarek earned a PB in second in 19.57.

Elsewhere, Dina Asher-Smith’s fine post-Olympic form continued as she finished third in a high-quality 100m. Asher-Smith had a dream start, but she slowed with 15 metres to go as she was overtaken by the world champion Sha’Carri Richardson, who came through to win in 10.84, with Olympic champion Julien Alfred second in 10.88. Asher-Smith was third, a hundredth of a second further back.

Britain’s Georgia Bell continued her good form by finishing second in the 800m in 1:57.94. But she had no answer when the Olympic silver medallist Mary Moraa kicked for home to win by about five metres in 1:57.08. Jemma Reekie faded to finish fourth in 1:58.49.

In the 5,000m, Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet was on target for a world record at halfway but drifted to finish eight seconds off the 14:00.21 set by Gudaf Tsegay last year.

  • Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo left off list of contenders for Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo left off list of contenders for Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi may be considered by many as the greatest football player of all time, but the Argentina star was omitted from the list of nominations to win this year’s Ballon d’Or award — the sport’s most prized individual honour.

The record eight-time winner and holder of the trophy did not feature in a list of 30 players in the running for the award, which will be presented October 29 (AEST).

Also excluded was Messi’s great rival, five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo. It was the first time since 2003 that neither player made the list.

Vinicius Junior, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane are among the names nominated.

Messi, who left European soccer behind when moving from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami last year, is still delivering at a high level and helped Argentina win the Copa America in July.

The 37-year-old beat Manchester City striker Haaland to the award last year, but will not defend his title.

Messi won his first Ballon d’Or in 2009 — the start of a four-year streak of taking the top prize.

He was first nominated in 2006.

Messi and Ronaldo turned the competition into a near-two-way contest during the peak of their careers — winning it a combined 13 times from 2008.

    Ronaldo’s first nomination was 2004.

Their omission from the list of nominations is likely due to leaving top-flight European club football, with Ronaldo having moved to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

A new generation of talent has emerged in the form of Mbappé, Vinicius Junior, Bellingham and Haaland. Emerging teenage star Lamine Yamal of Spain was also nominated.

While City striker Haaland was runner-up to Messi last year, the favourites to be crowned Ballon d’Or winner this time around include Real Madrid pair Vinicius Junior and Bellingham, as well as City and Spain midfielder Rodri.

Messi was also left off the list in 2022, but powered back to inspire Argentina to the World Cup title later that year and won his eighth Ballon d’Or in 2023.

However, at the latter end of his career and now playing in MLS, he may find it harder to hold off the challenge of his younger rivals for the title of the game’s best.

It is also notable that he was omitted despite winning a major international honour with Argentina this year.

Aitana Bonmati, who won the women’s award last year is nominated again. US stars Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, Alyssa Naeher and Lindsey Horan were also on the 30-long list of contenders.

The awards are voted for by a jury of men’s and women’s football journalists.

Created by France Football magazine, the Ballon d’Or was first awarded to England great Stanley Matthews in 1956.

Legends of the game including Eusébio, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane have all won it in the past.

  • Hockey sticks, Gatorade left in tribute on NJ road where NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, brother Matthew were killed

Hockey sticks, Gatorade left in tribute on NJ road where NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, brother Matthew were killed

Grieving hockey fans erected a memorial Saturday on the New Jersey corner where an alleged drunk driver claimed the lives of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew.

A cross crafted from old hockey sticks bearing the names of the brothers and their respective player numbers was plunged into the ground alongside County Route 551 in Oldmans Township, where the duo had been cycling together Thursday evening.

Several other sticks were arranged on the grass peppered between dozens of flower bouquets, balloons and a sign promising that the brothers will be “forever in our hearts.”

“What makes this so sad is that it could have been preventable. If he drank, why didn’t he just take an Uber?” one grieving visitor said.

Odes to the Gaudreaus’ respective hockey careers were also offered up at the memorial — including two bottles of Gatorade, which served as a nod to Johnny Gaudreau’s tradition of sharing a bottle of the sports drink with his old Calgary Flames teammates after scoring a goal.

One man who laid down flowers told The Post that the offerings were left by “the entire hockey community across the country.”

They even left behind flowers, hockey sticks and even jerseys front of the home of their surviving family members — who were meant to be celebrating a wedding rather than the loss of both brothers.

“What makes this so sad is that it could have been preventable. If he drank, why didn’t he just take an Uber?” one grieving visitor, who declined to share their name, said of the alleged drunk driver.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were biking in their New Jersey hometown when they were struck and killed by a motorist who allegedly told a state trooper he guzzled “five to six” beers” before the crash.

The driver, Sean Higgins, reportedly attempted to pass an SUV in front of him, which had moved into the middle of the roadway to give the brothers plenty of room, just after 8 p.m.

Follow the NY Post’s coverage on NHL star Johnny Gaudreau’s tragic death at 31:

The US Army Major tried to pass the SUV on the right, striking the Gaudreaus from behind. The county road is rural, with crops on either side. There are no shoulders or street lights.

The tragedy struck one day before the Gaudreau brothers were set to take part as groomsmen in their sister Katie’s wedding to hockey player Devin Joyce in Gloucester City, NJ. The family had even celebrated the wedding rehearsal just hours before the tragedy.

Johnny, who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.

Matthew’s wife is pregnant and is expecting their first child in December.

Higgins — who appeared to sigh with exasperation in court upon learning he would be held in jail through next week — faces two counts of vehicular homicide.
