    The controversy surrounding Olympic gold medalist boxer Imane Khelif has escalated as tennis legend Martina Navratilova has voiced strong objections, based on reports alleging Khelif’s gender as “biologically male.”

    This revelation, first brought to light in the German tabloid Bild, has reignited public debate over gender and eligibility in women’s sports.

    Navratilova, known for her outspoken views on the topic, took to social media platform X to criticize the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to allow Khelif to compete at the Paris Games.

    Navratilova, addressing her followers, stated, “Imane might have been raised as a woman but Imane is a biological male and should not have been allowed to box at the Olympics.”

    Her remarks come on the heels of a purported medical report indicating that Khelif may have male biological characteristics.

    The authenticity of the report remains unverified, but it allegedly involves evaluations by expert endocrinologists from both France and Algeria.

    A growing debate and public backlash

    This controversy first began in the summer when both Khelif, representing Algeria, and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting faced allegations over their gender, despite winning Olympic gold as women.

    Navratilova’s response has been echoed by other public figures, with British journalist Piers Morgan joining the debate, demanding that Khelif be stripped of her gold medal.

    Morgan declared, “Khelif is a biological man… The gold medal should now be stripped and awarded to the best actual woman.”

    Khelif’s competitive history has included prior controversy; last year, she was disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) mid-competition due to what were called “failed eligibility tests.”

    Levels To This with Sheryl Swoopes and Terrika Foster-Brasby is part of the newly formed Women’s Sports Audio Network (WSAN), which is the first-ever audio platform exclusively dedicated to women’s sports. Earlier this year, iHeartMedia and Deep Blue Sports + Entertainment formed a strategic partnership to create WSAN with the goal of leveraging the iHeartMedia network to scale women’s sports coverage across broadcast radio, podcasts, streaming and events. The commitment to women’s sports is part of iHeartMedia’s strategy to both capitalize on and support the growth of women’s sports. Other shows in the WSAN include Good Game with Sarah Spain and In Case You Missed It with Khristina Williams.

    IHeartMedia’s investment in women’s sports comes at a time when the popularity of women’s sports is at an all-time high. According to Deloitte, elite women’s sports are currently expected to become a $1 billion industry in 2024, representing a 300% increase in just three years.

    “It’s wise to invest in women’s sports because it’s just quite naturally what any good business person would do,” said Foster-Brasby. “You want to appeal to what’s popular, but you also want to just invest in humans that are really doing amazing things? No one’s doing more amazing things right now than women athletes.”

    So far, Capital One, e.l.f Cosmetics, and e.l.f SKIN have all been announced as financial sponsors of the Women’s Sports Audio Network.

    Closing The Gender Gap In Sports Coverage

    Terrika Foster-Brasby has been covering women’s sports for over a decade. Best known as the co-host and co-creator of ESPN’s WNBA show Around the Rim, Foster-Brasby has worked to provide coverage, especially of women’s basketball, even before mainstream media recognized leagues like the WNBA as newsworthy.

    For decades, women’s sports have received just 4% of total sports media coverage. Last year, a new study conducted by The Collective at Wasserman revealed that the percentage of total women’s sports media coverage has grown to 15% – however, traditional and linear media still remains at just 5%.

    “From a media perspective, the coverage is still unbalanced, the investment is still unequal,” said Foster-Brasby. “I think that with women’s sports, you have to be willing to take that chance and take that risk. Because as we’re seeing here most recently, that return on investment is absolutely happening.”

    Foster-Brasby and Swoopes hope that Levels To This will help fill in some of the gender gaps that exist in sports media coverage.

    “We laugh, we cry, we curse, we share tears, we joke. It’s a safe space, and a good space for anyone who’s looking for real conversations,” said Swoopes.

    Parents of children attending Sydney Grammar School have found a way around the institution’s ban on former Socceroos captain Craig Foster giving a lecture to students.

    Foster was scheduled to give a guest lecture to students at Sydney Grammar, but the $45,000-a-year institution decided to can the football great turned human rights activist.

    Exactly why he was cancelled isn’t clear, but there is speculation the move was prompted by Foster’s strident criticism of Israel and his recent snubbing of an invitation to meet King Charles.

    ‘We are very mindful that our Ithaka Lecture series must also acknowledge and be respectful of the impact it may have on the wellbeing of members of our community,’ said headmaster Richard Malpass in an email to parents.

    ‘We believe it is not in the best interests of our community at this time for the lecture scheduled for 23 October to proceed.’

    But it seems Grammar students will get to hear from Foster after parents organised a room at the State Library for the lecture. 

    ‘In light of the cancellation of last week’s Sydney Grammar lecture, which was full, parents of the boys, particularly mothers, asked if I would still take the time to speak to their sons,’ Foster announced on social media.

    The event has proved very popular, with organisers having to double the capacity of the space and now offering a live-stream option to those who can’t attend in person.

    Foster made headlines in May when he stepped down as co-chair of the ARM along with Aussie Olympics great Nova Peris.

    Ms Peris said her decision to step down was due to her belief Mr Foster’s decision to write to Football Australia, the International Federation of Association Football and the West Asian Football Federation asking them asking them to suspend Israel from an upcoming FIFA conference ‘had created division’.

    The former Socceroos star published his letter online, which explained that the International Court of Justice had deemed Israel’s actions as ‘plausible genocide’.

    ‘Every member of the football community and your governing body, Football Australia has a duty of care to do everything possible to stop genocide wherever, and whenever it occurs,’ he said.

    But Ms Peris said his comments had created division within not only ARM but also across the country.

    Lawn bowls great Karen Murphy was elated after recently being elevated to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame – but it was a day also tinged with tragedy on a personal level.

    Murphy received a call from yachting legend and Sport Australia Hall of Fame chairman John Bertrand informing her of the coveted honour – just hours after her mother Lorraine had died.

    ‘Mum had battled brain cancer and I’d been looking after her for a few years and she passed away at 5.57am that day and then John called me at about 11am and told me, and I just burst into tears,’ she told News Corp.

    ‘I was extremely honoured when I heard the news, to be joining such a wonderful list of athletes across all sports is truly special. 

    ‘I feel incredibly grateful to all those who have been on my journey with me. This award is one which I share with our whole bowls community.’

    Murphy is a two-time singles world champion and 2006 Commonwealth Games Gold medallist – and widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest ever female bowlers. 

    She joins the likes of Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson and surfing legend Mick Fanning as fellow Sport Australia Hall of Fame recipients.

    Other 2024 inductees include motorsport great Mark Skaife, former Kookaburras’ hockey captain Mark Knowles and dual-sport Paralympics champion Liesl Tesch.

    Pearson is one of only nine Australian women ever to win an Olympic track and field gold medal, netting gold in London in 2012 and silver in 2008 in the 100m hurdles as well as World Championship success in 2011 and 2017 as two Commonwealth Games titles.

    The first Australian to be named World Athlete of the Year, and already twice a winner of the SAHOF’s ‘The Don’ Award, Pearson said it was ‘surreal’ to be included in such esteemed company, including the likes of Cathy Freeman, a childhood hero.

    ‘I don’t think it’s really sunk in. It’s so surreal. It feels like it just happens to people you see on TV,’ she said.

    ‘I still feel like I’m watching the Sydney Olympics and watching Cathy Freeman run. When Steve Hooker won gold in Beijing I was sitting on the sidelines.

    ‘Even though I won silver, I was thinking, this is really cool. I’m watching this person, this athlete, just doing amazing things. It’s a bizarre feeling that I’m one of those people now.’

    Fanning enters as a three-time world champion as part of an illustrious surfing career headlined by his encounter with a shark at J-Bay in South Africa in 2015.

    Despite the shock incident, Fanning returned to the same ocean the very next year and secured a famous victory to etch his name in Australian sporting folklore.

    Fanning is already a member of the World Surfers’ Hall of Fame and Australian Surfing Hall of Fame and said he was pretty ‘flabbergasted’ to be told of his elevation in to the SAHOF.

    ‘Australia produces so many incredible sporting stars and to be honoured as one of those, among the greats, I’m pretty flabbergasted, to be honest,’ he said.

    ‘It’s not something that we ever look for when we are doing our sport, but to be acknowledged later in life is very special and I’m very honoured to be able to share it with people who have supported me.

    ‘I wasn’t the most talented person, I wasn’t the most gifted, I didn’t have the most money or anything like that, but I just gave it my all.’

    Skaife was one of Australian motorsport’s most successful drivers, winning the Bathurst 1000 six times from 1991-2010 with five touring car titles, including a stunning hat-trick of V8 Supercars championship crowns from 2002-04.

    Four-time Olympian Knowles was the was the youngest member of the Kookaburras team that ended decades of Olympic heartache by winning gold in Athens in 2004.

    He won Olympics bronze medals in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, along with two World Cups, four Champions Trophies and four Commonwealth Games gold medals before his retirement in 2018 after more than 300 international caps.

    Sir Bobby Charlton died exactly one year ago and the Manchester United legend left behind a strong legacy.

    The former England star – who won the World Cup in 1966 – left thousands of pounds to good causes when he passed away at the age of 86.

    One of his donations helped to set up a football academy for youngsters in Manchester.

    Street Reds was launched by the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation along with the Manchester United Foundation and it offers free football and alternative activities for people between the ages of eight and 18.

    As well as helping youngsters develop their football skills, it also provides opportunities to gain new qualifications.

    Street Reds sessions are free and aim to help some of the most underprivileged young people, including many refugees and victims of conflict.

    Head coach Mike Dugdale told The Mirror: ‘We had a huge donation [from Sir Bobby] that allows this to happen, and the turnout every week is brilliant.

    ‘What’s great is we have a lot of kids who are 14 and over which is a critical age – we get them off the streets and engaged in football. 

    ‘The primary purpose is football engagement and getting kids onto the pitch – but we do see some special players who we can signpost to the academies.’

    Street Reds, which launched in August, is very similar to the famous Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools that first opened in the 1970s.

    ‘It is a very natural intersection of the elements, and we are delighted to team up with Manchester United Foundation to bring this to a reality.’

    During his life, Charlton also raised money for cancer hospitals and founded his own charity to fund research into improved civilian landmine clearance.

    Frank Bruno, one of the most celebrated names in British boxing history, is undergoing brain scans amid fears his ‘brain might be on a slow decline’.

    Bruno was one of the biggest names in British sport in the late 1980s and 90s, a ferocious and endearing heavyweight with 38 of his 40 victories in the ring coming via knockout.

    His crowning moment came in 1995 when he beat Oliver McCall at Wembley to win the WBC heavyweight title on home soil.

    The Londoner also twice shared the ring with Mike Tyson in 1989 and 1996 with that second meeting proving to be his last fight before retirement.

    Bruno provided unforgettable moments in the ring, retiring with 40 wins from 45 fights with his five career defeats all coming via knockout.

    His career, along with those of fellow British greats Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Lennox Lewis, has been chronicled in the new Amazon documentary Four Kings.

    During the series, Bruno’s daughter Rachel explained doctors are trying to establish whether blows to the head during his gruelling 14-year career in the ring have caused long-term damage.

    ‘We have learned recently that his brain might be on a slow decline,’ she said.

    ‘They are just doing scans and tests at the moment. With the impact of his career and constant knocks to the head, it’s obviously probably not helped.

    ‘We don’t know how fast his brain is going to decline. It’s sad but we’re a strong family and we want to cherish these moments.’

    Bruno added: ‘I fulfilled my dream. ‘I won the world championship. I’ve got some beautiful kids. What more do you need?’

    Bruno is involved in a number of mental health initiatives and tweeted last week he is in good health.

    ‘Can I confirm my health is fine I am doing speaking events every week and audiences who see & hear me up and down the country will testify to that. People are booking me all the time in fact the diary is looking good.’

    A source close to Bruno also explained the 62-year-old’s checks are a routine process for any retired fighter with the former world champion ‘healthier than he has been in years’.

    ‘Frank’s in a great place at the moment and feeling fitter and healthier than he has in years,’ a source told The Sun.

    ‘Each week he will be at three or four events talking about his career and working.

    ‘All retired boxers have regular checks, and Frank is no different.’

But Twila Kilgore, the interim head coach prior to me coming a board has been implementing a lot of things. So we’re as ready as we can be at this moment.”
