  • How to Naturally Manage Stress and Anxiety: Supplements and Lifestyle Tips

Stress and anxiety have become all too common to the average person today. Juggling work, family, and social commitments, along with the constant barrage of information from technology, can leave us feeling overwhelmed and on edge.

While modern medicine offers solutions, nature provides a treasure trove of remedies to help us manage stress and anxiety naturally. Let’s delve into some of the most effective supplements and lifestyle tips for finding calm and balance in our hectic lives.

Herbal Allies for Stress and Anxiety

    • Ashwagandha: This adaptogenic herb, revered in Ayurvedic medicine, helps the body cope with stress by regulating cortisol levels, the stress hormone. Studies suggest it can reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being.

    • Rhodiola Rosea: Another powerful adaptogen, Rhodiola, helps the body adapt to physical and mental stress. It can improve mood, reduce fatigue, and enhance cognitive function, making it a valuable tool for managing stress-related symptoms.

    • Passionflower: This beautiful flower has a long history of use for anxiety and insomnia. It contains compounds that interact with the brain’s GABA receptors, promoting relaxation and calmness.

    • Lavender: The soothing scent of lavender has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. Consider using lavender essential oil in a diffuser, adding it to a warm bath, or simply inhaling its aroma.

    • Chamomile: This gentle herb has calming properties that can help ease anxiety and promote relaxation. Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea before bed for a restful night’s sleep.

Vitamins and Minerals for Mental Well-being

    • Magnesium: Often referred to as the “relaxation mineral,” magnesium plays a vital role in regulating stress responses. It can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and support overall mental health.

    • B Vitamins: B vitamins, particularly B6 and B12, are essential for brain health and the production of neurotransmitters that regulate mood. A deficiency in these vitamins can contribute to anxiety and depression.

    • Vitamin D: Often called the “sunshine vitamin,” Vitamin D is crucial for mood regulation. Spending time outdoors in sunlight or taking a Vitamin D supplement can help improve mood and reduce anxiety symptoms.

If you’re looking for high-quality herbal supplements to support your stress and anxiety management journey, consider Herbal Pharm, a brand dedicated to providing natural solutions for health and wellness. Their products are made with premium ingredients, halal-certified, and formulated to promote optimal well-being.

    Lifestyle Tips for Stress Reduction

Beyond supplements, incorporating these lifestyle tips into your daily routine can significantly impact your stress levels:

    • Regular Exercise: Physical activity releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones, and helps reduce stress and anxiety.

    • Mindfulness and Meditation: Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help you cultivate inner peace and manage stress more effectively.

    • Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides your body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally and cope with stress.

    • Quality Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body and mind to recharge.

    • Social Connection: Nurturing strong relationships with friends and family can provide emotional support and buffer the effects of stress.

Take the First Step to a Lower-Stress Life

Stress and anxiety are inevitable parts of life, but they don’t have to control us. By incorporating natural remedies like herbal supplements, vitamins, and lifestyle modifications, we can empower ourselves to manage stress and anxiety effectively. Remember, you’re in control and you can choose to take the first step towards a calmer, more balanced life.

‘Craziest thing’: Family’s offer of $6,000 salary for live-in English tutor to 8-year-old goes viral, Lifestyle News

$6,000 a month — that’s the price one family in Singapore is willing to pay a live-in English tutor for their eight-year-old child.

And the salary comes with meals provided and the potential of up to three months’ paid leave too, according to several ads recently spotted online.

Plausible, or too good to be true?

The well-paid assignment appears to have left TikTok user Linglingd0ng in a state of disbelief, according to her viral post on Sunday (Sept 22).

The screenshot Linglingd0ng posted from Premium Tutors Assignments’ Telegram channel gave further details on the job requirements, which was for a female English tutor to the pupil, who lives in the Orchard area.

“The client is ‘looking for a tutor to support an eight-year-old child with homework, particularly in English. Tutor has to be bilingual in English and Chinese’,” stated the agency.

And in case the job title of “live-in tutor” wasn’t clear enough, under a section on the “duration and timing” of the assignment, the response given was “as required”.

However, the job posting could no longer be found when AsiaOne tried to search for it on the Telegram channel on Wednesday.

But when we dug further, we uncovered a similar ad posted to the My Careers Future job portal, which was also posted on Sept 22.

The employer, identified on the ad as Jie Shun Jia, is registered as an employment agency incorporated in June this year.

The post, written in both Chinese and English, gave more detailed requirements, including for the candidate to have prior work experience as an English tutor and the ability to “start work as soon as possible”.

Moreover, it stipulated that the salary would be “$6,000 to $8,000 monthly”.

The ad also gave more information on the home environment, stating that the child is a girl and that only the mother and her children live in the home.

In addition, the post stated that if the family were to head overseas during the three-month school holidays, the tutor would be free to “have a holiday” while still being paid her regular salary.

In its last line, Jie Shun Jia also indicated that graduates from Nanyang Technological University “or other good university graduates” with or without experience may apply, and that “not having a good academic background will be okay”.

User Linglingd0ng wrote in her TikTok post referencing the Telegram and the $6,000 salary offer: “Craziest thing I saw this weekend.”

“Exactly why Singapore is so competitive,” she added.

And it seems she’s not alone in her sentiments.

In the comments section to her video, which has garnered more than 300,000 views as of Wednesday, some wondered if it would mean that the tutor would be at the family’s beck and call, 24/7.

But it seems that didn’t bother everyone.

Responded a user: “For $6,000 I will drown myself with caffeine and be on hot standby 24/7, 365 days in a year, man.”

Wrote another: “Meals and holidays provided? Sign me up.”

However, others were more than sceptical, with comments such as “Sounds sus and dangerous” and “No way this isn’t a scam”.

AsiaOne has reached out to Linglingd0ng and the Premium Tutors Assignments for more information.

But in case the job offer has been snapped up, a scroll through the agency’s Telegram channel uncovered yet another $6,000 job offer, this time, for an “educational tutor/caretaker” to a nine-year-old child living in Bukit Timah.

The ad indicated that their client is “looking for a dedicated bilingual” in English and Mandarin “to support a nine-year-old child with homework, particularly in English and Math”.

The candidate must also “be able to drive and transport the child safely to and from various locations”.

In addition, the tutor should also have a diploma at minimum, with the duration of the assignment stipulated as “Mondays to Saturdays, 10.30am to 9pm”.

Or if all else fails, one could also try their luck at Haidilao.

    Editor’s Note:

Fifty years ago, not only the archaeological community but also ordinary people were stunned by the excavation of the Mawangdui Han Tombs. Among the findings was a remarkable discovery known as China’s “Sleeping Beauty” (Lady Xin Zhui), an over 2,100-year-old lady who looks nearly as good as she did when she was buried after her death at the age of about 50, during China’s Western Han Dynasty (206BC-AD25). The world has marveled at the mystery behind her body, as well as the numerous precious treasures unearthed from the tombs, including textiles, bamboo and silk manuscripts.

In this Mawangdui trilogy, the Global Times Culture Desk explores how digital technologies have brought the public closer to the heritage and how the “Mawangdui IP” was revived by the creative industries. This is the third installment.

Although there are many sites in China that can embody the country’s Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220) history, Mawangdui is the most exceptional one mainly due to its mysterious finds like the 2,100-year-old mummified aristocrat that is known as Lady Xin Zhui.

Three excavations on the site were carried out from 1972 to 1974. At that time, such excavations brought a research craze to the academic field worldwide. Thanks to new means such as the digital technology, such a scholarly craze in the past 50 years has been extended to the public, especially among the young people.

    Decoding mystery

Lady Xin Zhui’s silk garments are Mawangdui Han Tombs’ stellar artifacts. Due to their brittle and fragile nature, many original pieces are now only stored as archives at the Hunan Museum in Changsha, Central China’s Hunan Province. To connect the heritage with people, making replication for public display was a crucial task. The task engages both technological tools and the ingenuity of textile experts like Yang Jiyuan.

Yang, a restorer of ancient silk textile in Nanjing, East China’s Jiangsu Province, has replicated seven Lady Xin Zhui’s garments since 2016. She told the Global Times that the printed and painted floss silk-padded gauze robe was one of the most challenging tasks.

Through examination using a microscope and creating 3D modeling of the original “printed and painted gauze robe,” Yang revealed to the Global Times that the piece’s air-like fabric actually consists of seven sheerest silk layers, and the thickness of each one of them is like “one-third of the tissue’s thickness.”

Matching such almost disappearing silk textiles together was not the most challenging task. Yang told the Global Times that the “painting” process was even harder since the colors should keep looking “not too vibrant and new.”

She said the gauze needs to be “1:1 the same to the original one” that has more than 2,000 years of history. Thanks to advanced technologies that can decode the ingredients and composition of ancient fabrics, Yang discovered that Lady Xin Zhui’s garment was painted in natural mineral dye and was covered with an extra “glue-like substance” to make it look understated while in a good shape. She said that she was only one of the heritage protectors in China, who has “felt the responsibility to show the public a legacy’s authentic aesthetics and story.”

“Technological tools are our assistants. They ensure the history we deliver to the public is correct,” Xiang Benshan, a restorer of underwater ceramic relics, told the Global Times.

    Cross-field collaborations

Other than the research sector, technological innovations are now diversely applied on shows that relate to the Mawangdui Han Tombs.

Currently, a blockbuster show called The Art of Life: Multimedia Exhibition of Mawangdui Han Culture is ongoing at the Hunan Museum. The immersive digital project, a collaboration between the Hunan Museum, Digital Library of China, and the Harvard FAS CAMLab, presents a new model for showcasing the Mawangdui Han Tombs through multimedia installations.

The show includes three thematic sections such as “Time and Space.” They highlight the artistic grandeur and spiritual reflections of ancient Chinese, giving insight into their concepts of life, death and afterlife.

Lü Chenchen, associate director of Harvard FAS CAMLab, told the Global Times that the future of Mawangdui-themed exhibitions lies in global academic collaboration and the integration of advanced technologies such as VR tools and interactive animations.

“By partnering internationally, institutions can leverage cultural IPs like the Mawangdui Han Tombs and digital tools to broaden access to historical knowledge from different perspectives and different disciplines,” Lü told the Global Times.

If the research lab and the museum are where the Mawangdui IP provides intellectual inspirations to people, then the site’s cross-field collaborations with the cultural and creative industries have made the heritage a joy of people’s everyday lives.

The Hunan Museum recently collaborated with a food brand to launch a “Mawangdui spicy strip,” one of the favorite snacks by young people that is also known as La Tiao.

At the museum’s “digital Han lifestyle experiencing center,” symbols of relics like the round lacquer plate and Lady Xin Zhui’s garments have been printed on products like scarves, fans and cakes.

Lifestyle interventions can slow or reverse some illnesses | Health

HAVE YOU ever gone to the doctor and spent more time talking about how to treat your symptoms, rather than what is causing them? Have you been prescribed medications that merely mask your symptoms, or even make them worse?

Addressing the root cause of your symptoms is at the heart of understanding your ailments, and this can be a game changer in achieving lasting health and wellness.

According to Dr Orlando Thomas, medical doctor and functional medicine practitioner at Thomas Medical and Shockwave Centre, understanding the root cause of a disease is like unravelling a mystery. Symptoms are often manifestations of an underlying imbalance or dysfunction within the body.

“For instance, chronic conditions like diabetes, autoimmune diseases, or digestive disorders may have multifaceted origins. Addressing the root cause involves identifying these origins – be it genetic, environmental, or lifestyle-related – and developing a personalised strategy to restore balance,” he said.

Dr Thomas, who was the main speaker at the ‘Transforming Lives Through Healthy Living’ series of presentations held at the Portmore Seventh-day Adventist Church, said the human body is a complex system, and illness often arises from imbalances within this system.

“These imbalances can be triggered by various factors, including poor nutrition, stress and environmental toxins. By identifying and addressing these root causes, we can alleviate symptoms that also promote long-term health and well-being,” Dr Thomas said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the world’s biggest killer is ischaemic heart disease, responsible for 13 per cent of the world’s total deaths. Since 2000, the largest increase in deaths has been caused by this disease, rising by 2.7 million to 9.1 million deaths in 2021.

As a newly emerged cause of deaths, COVID-19 was directly responsible for 8.8 million deaths in 2021, and consequently, largely pushed down other leading causes of death by one place. Instead of being the second- and third-leading causes of death as in 2019, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease became the third and fourth in 2021, responsible for approximately 10 per cent and five per cent of total deaths, respectively.

Lower respiratory infections remained the world’s most deadly communicable disease other than COVID-19, ranked as the fifth-leading cause of death. However, the number of deaths has gone down substantially: in 2021 it claimed 2.5 million lives, 370,000 fewer than in 2000.

Deaths from other non-communicable diseases were also on the rise. Trachea, bronchus and lung cancers deaths have risen from 1.2 million in 2000 to 1.9 million in 2021 and are now ranked sixth among leading causes of death.

According to Dr Thomas, in conventional medicine, medical practitioners tend to treat these diseases individually, but most people that have one of these illnesses also have three or more that are referred to as comorbidities.

“They all go together. Most diabetics have hypertension and poor circulation, and may be at the risk of getting a stroke or a heart attack. The question is, why do many of these diseases go together? Because the root causes are the same, and as such, reversing these diseases also takes the same or similar strategies,” he said.

Addressing the root causes of illnesses, he said, represents a paradigm shift in our approach to health and wellness. By focusing on the underlying imbalances that give rise to disease, we can move beyond symptom management to truly promote health and vitality.

Many people suffer from different factors, including chronic stress, poor diet, and the lack of sleep. By addressing these underlying issues, he said, we can enhance our body’s natural ability to fight off illness. “As we continue to face new health challenges, this holistic approach will be critical in supporting our collective well-being,” Dr Thomas said.

    COMMON THINGS TO LIVE LONGER:

    • Good nutrition: What you eat has a direct impact on the cells in your body, which in turn has an impact on longevity. A healthy diet provides cells with vital sources of energy and keeps them stable and working as they should. Healthy foods support your immune cells, which defend against infections and other health threats, protect other cells from damage, and help the body repair or replace damaged cells.

    • Role of exercise: Many studies show that physical activity contributes to greater longevity, due to the many positive effects it has on the body. These effects include stronger heart and lung function, improved health of blood vessels, stronger muscles, better balance, and a healthier weight.

OTHER LIFESTYLE CHOICES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO LONGEVITY:

In addition to healthy eating and being more active, the following lifestyle choices can have an enormous impact on longevity and quality of life:

    • Do not smoke: Smoking has been proven to shorten lifespan. Smoking damages lung function, hearth, skin and oral health, and it increases the risk of cancer.

    • Limit alcohol: Excessive alcohol use increases your risk of liver damage, cancer, and serious accidents. It can impair your immune system and result in depression. Drinking alcohol in moderation means one drink or less per day for women, and two drinks or less per day for men.

    • Get enough sleep: Getting quality sleep is vital to good health and well-being throughout your life and may even extend it. Over time, inadequate sleep can raise your risk for chronic health problems, affecting your heart, brain, lungs, immune system, and more.

    • Hydrate: Those who stay well hydrated appear to be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions like heart and lung disease, and live longer than those who do not.

    • Socialise: More frequent social activity was associated with significantly longer survival. In fact, the greater the frequency of socialisation, the greater the likelihood of living longer.

    • Think positive: You may be surprised that your outlook on life can contribute to longevity. Two recent studies found that optimism is linked to a longer lifespan in women from diverse racial and ethnic groups, and to better emotional health in older men.
