  • Living the plant-based lifestyle at Yale

Living the plant-based lifestyle at Yale

    YuLin Zhen, Photography Editor

Yale University dining halls have garnered their fair share of online attention for their varied offerings. However, for vegetarian and vegan students at Yale, the dining hall experience is often a balancing act.

Young Americans, especially, have increasingly adopted plant-based diets. A 2023 study conducted by the Food for Climate League found that 83 percent of Generation Z expressed interest in consuming more plant-based foods. With vegetarianism on the rise, providing high-quality non-meat options is becoming more imperative for university dining halls.

Yale Dining has consistently taken steps toward enhancing its plant-based options, and these efforts have not gone unnoticed by students.

“There’s always something that’s vegan, which I appreciate. I do not take it for granted,” said vegan student Hila Tor ’28.

However, when asked whether or not she felt as though the dining halls’ vegan menu was entirely successful, Tor was more reserved. She told the News that the answer is not a “clear yes or no.”

A lack of protein-rich dishes is a universal concern brought up by the vegetarian and vegan students the News spoke with. Maintaining a healthy protein intake already requires additional attention for those on plant-based diets. Many voiced that unsatisfactory provisions in the dining halls were an obstacle to meeting their protein goals.

“I literally think there are no protein options. Other than the occasional tofu, which is like once every three days,” vegetarian student Divya Subramanian ’28 said.

Madeleine Loewen ’24.5, who keeps kosher, expressed similar grievances.

The numerous restrictions surrounding what can and cannot be served with meat in the kosher diet often force Loewen to opt for vegetarian dishes.

“They really only have pasta. There’s not many vegetarian options,” she said. “I do worry about getting enough protein.”

One major factor is the frequency with which non-meat hot entrees feature a fake meat substitute as their main ingredient.

Plant-based meat alternatives that mimic animal products are a rapidly growing industry, but many remain skeptical as to their nutritional value. Studies found that plant-based meat substitutes often do not contain the vitamins and minerals found in animal proteins. Furthermore, fake meats fall into the category of artificial foods that have been linked to various increased health risks.

Additionally, many choose a vegetarian lifestyle due to an aversion to the texture or taste of meat, which these products attempt to recreate. Dishes that incorporate meat substitutes thereby alienate this group and limit their options.

“No, I can’t do it. I don’t know why; it freaks me out. I can’t do it,” Loewen said when asked about artificial meats.

Tor echoed this sentiment, referring to Yale dining’s frequent “strange and artsy” vegan meals.

Subramanian voiced nutritional concerns about meat substitutes, worrying that they do not have “much protein.” She also stressed her ardent love for tofu tenders — Yale’s non-meat offering on the coveted “Chicken Tender Thursday.”

The focus on vegan options often comes at the expense of vegetarians, who can fall through the cracks. In Yale Hospitality’s push to provide more vegan-friendly dishes, the dining halls may have cut back on vegetarian meals that include dairy or eggs — key sources of protein for many vegetarians.

The News sampled a week’s worth of Stiles’ Residential Dining menus and found that only four of the 14 lunch and dinner menus included a vegetarian entree.

Outside of residential dining halls, Rooted, one of the venues in Schwartzman Center’s Commons Dining Hall serves entirely vegetarian meals and offers vegan and gluten-free options four lunches a week.

Yale Hospitality has also expanded its “Smart Meal” program which allows students to use the Yale Hospitality mobile app to order meals from any dining hall for both lunch and dinner. Two of the options on this menu are plant-based: a Caesar salad and a falafel wrap.

Yale Hospitality Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications Alexa Gotthardt told the News that changes to Yale’s residential dining hall menus for the 2024-25 academic year included an increased frequency of the most popular vegetables. Gotthardt stressed that student feedback played a crucial role in determining which vegetables would be available as side dishes.

Gotthardt emphasized that student well-being remains central to Yale Hospitality’s menu design philosophy. She told the News that specific attention to the soup offerings mandated one vegan, one vegetarian, and two animal-based options over the course of the four-week cycle.

Another new development in Yale’s dining halls is an increased offering of overnight oats at breakfast and brunch. Both Subramanian and Lowen expressed contentment with the breakfast offerings at Yale, which provide the greatest variety of non-meat foods.

“We strive to offer balanced, inclusive, and approachable menus so we can satisfy the diverse community on campus,” said Yale Hospitality’s culinary team, according to Gotthardt.

Yale Hospitality caters 14 residential dining halls and 16 additional dining locations.

  • AbdulRazaq cautions LG chairmen against lavish lifestyle

AbdulRazaq cautions LG chairmen against lavish lifestyle

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on Monday, swore in the newly-elected chairpersons and vice chairpersons of the 16 local government areas of the state, cautioning them against a lavish lifestyle at the expense of the people.

The governor, during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House, Ilorin, urged the new officials to be prudent with power and work with the people in the interest of all.

The new council executives emerged at the local government elections conducted by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission on Saturday.

“Our country is in a transitive phase as our economy undergoes reforms, which have brought some inconveniences for the people. Please be sensitive to the realities of the time. Don’t indulge yourselves while the people struggle to meet basic needs.

  • Term Insurance for the Self-Employed-Tailoring Coverage to Fit Your Lifestyle

Term Insurance for the Self-Employed-Tailoring Coverage to Fit Your Lifestyle

These are trying times. Diseases turn into pandemics. Accidents happen every 2 hours. While most people are engrossed in their phone screens and social media, disabilities and untimely demise have become commonplace due to overlooking safety standards.

Everything is now a safety hazard, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up on your way of life, business, or family’s lifestyle. That is why there are term insurance plans, a boon that helps protect your interests during your life and takes care of your family in case of your untimely death.

What are the different types of advantageous term insurance for self-employed?

Term insurance comes in many forms. Here are the selections you need to keep in mind to make an informed decision:

    1. Endowment Plans:
These are beneficial term insurance for self employed people as the premium paid earns interest. In case of early death, the family receives the sum assured, but if you survive the tenure, you get your premiums with a rate of interest.
    1. ULIPs:
With ULIPs, your premiums are invested in the market. That way, you receive a certain amount of interest from your investments monthly, quarterly, or yearly. It is a life insurance plan that pays death benefits to your family and allows you to enjoy your money during the tenure of your term insurance policy.
    1. Increasing Term Insurance:
In this term insurance for self-employed, the sum assured increases every year. You need to determine the percentage increase as well as if your rate of premium will remain the same with every increment.
    1. Decreasing Term Insurance:
These policies usually offer loan benefits. Every year, a certain sum of money is set aside from your sum insured to repay the loans. That way, in case of an unfortunate death, your family will have fewer loans and mortgages to pay with the death benefit that they receive.
    1. Money-back plans:
These term insurance for self-employed are highly beneficial as they pay you a predetermined sum of money at regular intervals during the tenure of your policy. The remaining sum from your premium is settled if you survive the tenure. However, in cases of untimely death, the family still receives the entire sum assured.
    1. Term Insurance with Return of Premium:
If you survive the tenure of your term insurance plan, then all the premiums you paid over the years are returned to you.

How to choose the best term insurance plan for you and your family

There is a myriad of options to choose from, and sometimes it can be overwhelming to decide which term insurance for self employed individuals best suits your needs and that of your family. Here are a few easy steps to follow:

    1. Start by determining your family’s financial needs. Factoring in an average rate of inflation, how much sum assured do you believe they would need to pay the bills, mortgages, loans, etc., as well as maintain the household for a couple of years at least? You need to plan for a little extra time because it would take a while for them to find a different source of income.
    1. Next, you need to consider the tenure terms.  If you don’t see an immediate danger, then you can fix term insurance for self-employed with a longer tenure. However, if you are boggled by the uncertainties of life and the dangers of accidents, diseases, etc., you can choose a shorter tenure. After all, the beauty of term insurance is that you can insure yourself anywhere from 10-100 years at a reasonable premium rate. You can use a term insurance calculator to determine the tenure based on your sum assured and the rate of premium you find feasible.
    1. Speaking of the premium rate, if the tenure and sum assured are your priorities, feed those into the term insurance calculator to determine the premium you will need to pay.
    1. Now, consider your lifestyle and habits. How likely is it that you may develop a chronic illness? If you feel that the threats of chronic diseases are looming over your head, look into add-ons or riders that offer relief in such cases. You can add the clauses to the term insurance calculator for a revised premium rate.
    1. After taking care of the necessities, consider if you want to keep earning money from your term insurance plans. Yes, that is a feasible mode of income and a real possibility. All you need to do is consider the available types of plans and opt for ULIPs, money-back plans, or endowment plans. These offer real-time returns on your premium investments. Therefore, you get to enjoy the money you put aside during your life.
    1. You can also opt for increasing or decreasing term insurance plans for self-employed. These either help your family in case of early, unfortunate death, or they help you relieve yourself and them of loans.
    1. One of the best term insurance for self-employed is the return of premium. If you survive the tenure of your term insurance plan, you get back the entire money you invested in premiums. You can use the funds to reinvest in another term insurance plan, opt for market investments, pay your loans and mortgages, or start a fund for your children’s higher education or wedding. You can do whatever you need to to relieve financial stress.

Use a term insurance calculator to determine the premium you will be able to pay and modify the nuances of your policy accordingly. If paying the premium isn’t such a big headache, opt for as much coverage as possible. You will be surprised at how many benefits you and your family can get from thorough financial planning with term insurance for self-employed.

    Conclusion

Self-employed individuals have massive responsibilities without a fixed and steady source of income from jobs. It is not a disadvantage, but rather an opportunity to plan your life and that of your family’s with returns on investment.

Choosing the right kind of term insurance plan enables you to increase your monthly income with ULIPs or periodic income with money-back plans and endowment plans. Even the decreasing term insurance for self-employed inadvertently increases your income by reducing your debt. On the other hand, increasing term insurance helps secure your family’s lifestyle. And let’s not forget that if you live a healthy and careful life, you could get all your investments back if you have term insurance with a return of premium.

So, consider your finances, use a term insurance calculator, and determine the best term insurance for self-employed individuals to maximize your benefits.

  • Preventing excessive hair loss – Lifestyle

Preventing excessive hair loss – Lifestyle

Hair loss can be a distressing experience that can impact self-esteem and overall confidence.

While some degree of hair shedding is normal, excessive hair loss can be concerning and may signal underlying health issues or lifestyle factors.

Fortunately, there are effective strategies you can adopt to prevent hair loss and promote healthy hair growth.

    Maintain a balanced diet

Nutrition plays a significant role in hair health and a well-balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals can help prevent hair loss.

These are the key nutrients needed:

    • Protein: Hair is primarily made of protein (keratin). Ensure adequate intake by consuming lean meats, fish, eggs, beans and nuts.
    • Iron: Iron deficiency can lead to hair thinning. Include iron-rich foods such as spinach, lentils and red meat in your diet.
    • Omega-3 fatty acids: These healthy fats nourish hair follicles and promote scalp health. Incorporate fatty fish, flaxseeds and walnuts into your meals.
    • Vitamins: Pay attention to vitamins A, C, D and E, as well as biotin and zinc, which are crucial for hair growth.

    Stay hydrated

Proper hydration is vital for overall health, including hair health.

Dehydration can lead to dry, brittle hair that is more prone to breakage.

    Practise gentle hair care

How you treat your hair can significantly affect its health. Implement these gentle hair care practices:

    • Avoid excessive heat: Minimise the use of heat styling tools like blow dryers, curling irons and straighteners. When necessary, use a heat protective spray.
    • Choose the right products: Opt for sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners that suit your hair type. Avoid products with harsh chemicals that can strip the hair of its natural oils.
    • Limit washing: Washing your hair too frequently can lead to dryness. Depending on your hair type, aim to wash every two to three days.
    • Use a wide-toothed comb: After washing, gently detangle your hair with a wide-toothed comb to prevent breakage.

    Avoid tight hairstyles

Tight hairstyles, such as braids, ponytails or buns, can cause traction alopecia, a condition resulting from constantly pulling your hair.

Give your hair regular breaks from tight styles to allow your scalp and follicles to recover.

    Consider scalp health

A healthy scalp is crucial for optimal hair growth.

Maintain good scalp hygiene by regularly cleansing and exfoliating to remove dead skin cells and excess oil.

Essential oils, such as peppermint and rosemary, can also stimulate blood flow to the scalp when diluted and massaged in.

    Consult a professional

If you notice significant hair loss, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist.

They can help identify any underlying health conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies.

Although her 97-year-old grandmother could not make it to the ceremony as she had caught a cold, Charlotte’s mother – her biggest cheerleader that night – made her presence known to all as she celebrated her daughter’s win.

Speaking to AsiaOne that evening, Charlotte shared that she had not expected the win at all as she felt everyone in the top 5 was deserving of it.

She admitted that when her name was called, she completely blacked out.

“My ears have been blocked lately, so initially I thought I heard it wrong. But I saw my mum jumping up and down, she was [like a] disco ball,” she said.

“I was so touched by all the support from the crowd. When the presenter came and asked me ‘how are you feeling?’, I was like: ‘I can’t even express [it]’. I was just trying not to burst into tears at that point.”

Charlotte also shared that she was going to video call her grandmother afterwards to convey the good news and her gratitude.

“The person I am today is because of her influence, this win is hers,” she said with tears in her eyes.

When asked what message she would like to put out there as Miss Universe Singapore 2024, Charlotte said: “I acknowledge that this isn’t just a crown, it’s not just a title. This is a job, it’s a role, it’s a responsibility.”

“So, I would like to… keep myself accountable by putting it out there that while I’m grateful for this title, I’m going to work hard for it, and I’m going to definitely use my voice to make an impact for what I believe in.”

    ‘I won my people’s hearts’

During the gala, an overwhelming majority of attendees could be seen holding LED signs and chanting one name: Qatrisha.

Many of them were friends and supporters from the queer community, including drag queens dressed to the nines.

Qatrisha Zairyah, 33, has been garnering online attention for being Miss Universe Singapore’s first transgender finalist.

An experienced pageant queen who has taken part in various pageants for transgender women, she exuded poise and elegance throughout the gala and while speaking with AsiaOne.

“Regardless [if I] won or not, at least I won my people’s hearts and was a great representation for them, even [getting into] the top five,” she said.

“It’s a tremendous success for me to be up there for a women’s pageant, I would say.”

The fashion advisor also thanked her supporters for standing by her throughout her pageant journey.

“I am here because of their support and motivational words,” she said.

“I felt so emotional [hearing them cheer] that I teared up backstage… these are my real supporters who followed me throughout my journey.”

Qatrisha added that she is hoping to pursue a career in modelling overseas and further represent Singapore in various ways.

    Role models for the youth

First runner-up Adelene Stanley, who is the founder of local dance academy The Dance Circus, and second runner-up, TV anchor and entrepreneur Olivia Dewi Cinta Higgins, also expressed their gratitude for their supporters and shared their hopes for the future.

Adelene, 29, a single mother to a two-year-old girl, told AsiaOne that she wishes to be a role model for her daughter as well as her students.

“I always tell my baby girl that she’s strong and fearless. She’s why I decided to join this competition.”

“I teach so many young girls in schools… I know they see me as their teacher, but I really want them to learn not just dance from me, but also life lessons,” she added.

Olivia, who is also 29, said that she aims to bring fitness and education to more people around the world.

“I’m going to keep advocating every single day with my small actions… for people to take control of their lives again,” she told AsiaOne.

“I want to start off in my home ground, Singapore, and then go overseas to keep advocating for the spread of knowledge, books and education.”

For now, Olivia plans on indulging in some post-pageant coffee and ice cream before training for her third Hyrox competition this year, which will be held in Hong Kong in November.

Her first career win came in wire-to-wire fashion at the Four Winds Invitational in 2022. She also won the 2022 Redtail Women’s Championship that year, making it her first American win. She claimed that the win helped build her confidence and made her realize she could be successful on the LPGA Tour. She was elated after the win, as she said, “My first American win means a lot. I’m really proud of myself. This Tour and this tournament really help build my confidence so I can know I can make it to the LPGA Tour.”

While playing on the Epson Tour in 2022, Liu managed four top-10 finishes. She also made 17 cuts in 21 starts, which established her as a rising star. This helped her secure an LPGA Tour Card for the 2023 season. She is ranked 94th in the CME Globe rankings in 2024. In 2023, Liu had a standout performance at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, where she finished solo in third place. This was the best result of the season for her.

Although her first season was tumultuous, she did finish in the top 25 multiple times. Her season highlight has to be her hole-in-one that she shot during the 2024 Kroger Queen City Championship. This event also raised donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by donating $20,000 for every ace. The initiative raised close to $300,000 for the hospital this year alone.

Her quiet yet confident demeanor on the course and her interviews show her mental strength. During her win at the 2022 Four Winds Invitational, Liu was in a three-way playoff after she lost her lead with bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes. She overcame a pressure situation by birdieing the 18th hole, forcing a playoff that she ultimately won. While discussing her journey in the LPGA in 2023, Liu made a statement saying, “I’m a generally shy person. [My coach] was able to show me how I could be expressive and outgoing on the course.

It is also important to note that Liu has also had to go through drastic cultural differences she must have had to face when making the switch to the LPGA. Calling it a “24-hour job,” she explained that her rigorous training, extensive travel, and strict diet were making her feel like she was “on her own in a new environment.” By overcoming such challenges early in her career, she seems to have developed a resilient mind and also gained the ability to adapt to changes. This is an important skill to have given how dynamic golf is as a sport.
