    Liraglutide with Lifestyle Interventions Decreased BMI for Children 6 to 11

    An intervention combining liraglutide with a lifestyle intervention was more effective for children with obesity aged 6 to 11 years old compared with the study placebo. With most literature surrounding weight-loss medications focusing on adults or children 12 years or older, recent findings that liraglutide can help children with obesity aged 6 to 11 speaks further to the overall efficacy of weight-loss medications for the management of obesity.

    “The glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues liraglutide and semaglutide are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency for long-term weight management in adolescents 12 years of age or older with obesity, as adjunct treatments to lifestyle interventions,” wrote authors of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.1

    GLP-1s have taken the pharmaceutical industry by storm both because of their efficacy in treating weight-loss as well as other comorbidities like cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. Indeed, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists 2024 report, weight-loss drugs have overtaken the prescription drug market and were key drivers of the 13.5% increase in drug expenditures in 2023.2

    However, when it comes to nonmonogenic, nonsyndromic weight-loss drugs, there has not yet been a GLP-1 approved for use amongst children with obesity under 12 years old.1 Instead, lifestyle interventions, including a healthy amount of nutritious food and physical activity, have been the primary modes of managing obesity for children under 12. But as GLP-1s become more popular and effective for weight-loss—and lifestyle interventions continue to show modest results—researchers are now exploring the use of GLP-1s for younger age groups.

    “In this phase 3a trial, which consisted of a 56-week treatment period and a 26-week follow-up period, we randomly assigned children (6 to <12 years of age) with obesity, in a 2:1 ratio, to receive either once-daily subcutaneous liraglutide at a dose of 3.0 mg (or the maximum tolerated dose) or placebo, plus lifestyle interventions. The primary end point was the percentage change in the body-mass index (BMI; the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters),” wrote authors of the study.1

    A total of 82 participants were included in the randomized trial, with 56 receiving liraglutide and 26 placed into a placebo group. Participants were monitored throughout a 56-week period, with a 5% reduction in BMI as the marker for liraglutide to be considered effective.

    For individuals in the liraglutide group, the mean percentage change in BMI was a 5.8% decrease, while individuals in the placebo group experienced a mean BMI increase of 1.6%. Furthermore, 46% of the liraglutide group saw a BMI reduction of at least 5%, with only 9% of the placebo group achieving a 5% BMI reduction.

    “At week 56, the difference between the liraglutide and placebo groups was −7.4 percentage points for the change from baseline in BMI and −8.4 percentage points for the change from baseline in body weight,” wrote the authors.1 “This phase 3a trial adds to the base of evidence for the management of pediatric obesity. The superiority of liraglutide over placebo was shown with respect to the primary end point.”

    Researchers mentioned that results of this phase 3a clinical trial will advise future studies regarding GLP-1 use among children under 12. A previous study analyzing BMI in youth populations found that, on average, the most extreme changes in weight occur between the years of 2 and 6. While the use of GLP-1s are gradually being considered for younger populations, it wouldn’t be unlikely for researchers to begin exploring the use of weight-loss drugs for children under the age of 6.

    In line with other studies regarding GLP-1 use for treating CVD and diabetes, researchers also found that liraglutide helped improve diastolic blood pressure and glycated hemoglobin level.1 Indeed, previous trials have highlighted the efficacy of semaglutide to treat CVD and patients with diabetes experiencing chronic kidney disease.3

    However, as researchers explore the use of GLP-1s for treating conditions aside from obesity, they too will continue to study GLP-1s among younger populations that are overweight. “I definitely think this is a realization that diet and exercise is not going to do it for a number of teens who are struggling with this—maybe the majority,” Stephanie Byrne, MD, a pediatrician in Los Angeles, told STAT News.4

    With adult and childhood obesity persisting as a major health concern within the US, researchers and patients alike are looking toward medications to expedite weight-loss across the country. The results of this study should serve as yet another page in the story of GLP-1s and their rise to popularity among older adults, adolescents, and now children.

    “This trial showed that among children 6 to younger than 12 years of age with obesity, liraglutide at a dose of 3.0 mg plus lifestyle interventions resulted in a greater reduction in BMI than placebo plus lifestyle interventions,” concluded the authors.1

    New Balance Embracing Lifestyle Tennis With T500 Shoe And Ganni Collaboration

    After a roughly six-year break, New Balance again has a tennis sneaker in its lifestyle collection. And the T500 has taken a pinnacle spot, debuting with an Aime Leon Dore collaboration, offering mainline styles and now introducing a Ganni collaboration.

    As tennis represents a growing element of today’s style trends and holds a key place in the New Balance performance culture, the brand expects the T500 to accentuate those elements in its lifestyle lineup for a long time coming.

    “This is a style that very much our ambition is to build into the next New Balance icon,” Lauren Fitzsimmons, New Balance global lifestyle marketing manager, tells me. “We have a tactical, strategic approach. The positioning is really important and will set it up for long-term success.”

    The fact that New Balance is aligning the T500 has a premium lifestyle sneaker isn’t just about its history in tennis, but about the silhouette itself. A near exact remake of a 1982 tennis performance shoe, Brian Lynn, New Balance global vice president of lifestyle, tells me the design is timeless and wearable. “It came out in 1982, but still has that sleekness and sharpness we are kind of known for,” he says. “We were very clear that we liked the look and aesthetic but had a lot of back and forth trying to get [the comfort] right. For us it was important to get as close to the original, but also update it so it is comfortable.”

    Lynn says he found a pristine 1980s pair on Ebay in his size. He loved the look and materials, but knew the brand had to update the fit after trying it on. “As much as it is a simple shoe, we were trying to get that shape and all the little details we had from back in those days right,” he says. “It is a lot of hard work making something look so simple.”

    Dialing in the feel came alongside embracing the premium materials of the original. That’s why the T500 fills with suede and leather, giving New Balance what Fitzsimmons calls a “premium and considered court shoe” and opening the chance to highlight differing materials and emphasize the classic design in a variety of colors and styles. “As a brand,” Lynn says, “we do those materials better than anyone else. We do see ourselves as the most premium sports brand in the world. At every level, we want to make sure it can be the best it can be.”

    Dipping back into tennis with the T500 was in part a reaction to trends, an embrace of the brand’s current growth and the desire to have a low-profile silhouette in a court style. The T500 fit the bill.

    Lynn says the success of the New Balance 550, a remake of an archival basketball shoe, was one of the first lifestyle court offerings from a brand known for both performance and lifestyle running. Once the 550 took off, that opened the door for a additional court lifestyle offerings. “The T500 just has that timeless appeal to it,” he says, “it is almost classic New Balance but done on a cupsole. For us it was nice it has that heritage, but this shoe is timeless, well made, features premium materials. It is not meant to be a hype shoe, just look good with any outfit.”

    And with so much similarity in the brand’s retro basketball styles, the T500 offers a fresh perspective. “Just given the landscape and marketplace at the moment and what the consumer is gravitating toward, it made sense to tap into our tennis archive,” Fitzsimmons says.

    With the brand’s performance tennis continuing to grow—New Balance launched a second signature shoe for American star Coco Gauff in August, adding to a mix of popular on-court models from the Boston-based brand—having a lifestyle option in the sport “sits nicely with who we are as a brand,” Lynn says. “Let’s make sure we have a lifestyle component to compliment what we are doing in the performance space.”

    Fitzsimmons says tennis is having a “thing at the minute,” both on court and in fashion off the court. “It is important to have a well-rounded view on what our tennis offering is,” she says. “Having a shoe like the T500 sitting alongside signature performance product makes a lot of sense, it just gives the consumer another alternative. It is not just performance tennis, but we do have lifestyle.”

    New Balance kicked off the T500 launch in late 2023 with the Aime Leon Dore collaboration and then created a “Quiet Please” campaign tied to the luxury positioning and materials of the mainline sneaker for early 2024. Next up comes the collaboration with Ganni, launching Sept. 20, all before a future leather version and additional color and material makeups.

    “It was important for us to get a different lens on it,” Fitzsimmons says about the Ganni collaboration. “Obviously we have our view, but bringing Ganni and adding their perspective on how the T500 can show up in the market is another fun twist.”

    Ditte Reffstrup, creative director at Ganni, tells me it’s no coincidence that Ganni chose the T500 when it came time to work with New Balance, but it isn’t just about the tennis, rather the “timeless appeal and versatility of the silhouette” that can be styled across a range of moods, adding that the minimalist roots allow it to fit everyday wear. Giving it a Ganni twist also allows the shoe to serve as a statement piece to contrast dressier looks. “Whether you’re pairing it with a relaxed sporty ensemble or using it to add contrast to a more polished suiting look, the T500 offers a freedom of styling,” Reffstrup says. “It’s all about expressing individuality, which is core to both our brands.”

    The Ganni x New Balance T500 release will give the sneaker bold leopard prints and “unexpected twists that bring new energy to the silhouette,” he says, while focusing on high-quality materials.

    “The T500’s simplicity allows for creative exploration, and its iconic status makes it a silhouette that resonates with both the past and the future,” Reffstrup says. “I really think this silhouette and shoe has a timeless appeal of a true evergreen.”

    Working with collaborative partners is a process that helps New Balance give products a fresh perspective, all while bringing a different audience to the brand, exposing consumers to a new silhouette.

    The roughly six-year gap without a tennis lifestyle model—the last silhouette, the New Balance Court 300, wasn’t a true archival model but an amalgamation of heritage designs—meant, Lynn says, that when it came time to bring tennis back, they knew they had to be in love with the shoe. “If we are going to do this again,” he says, “let’s do it correctly and properly.”

    That means the T500 will remain a key focus for the next couple of years. As lifestyle offerings continue to grow in 2025 and 2026, New Balance will feature additional court-inspired designs even if there aren’t going to be direct tennis archival pieces returning, allowing the T500 to hold a pinnacle position for both New Balance and lifestyle tennis sneakers.

    Located at the Singapore Art Museum, the store is set to cease operations on Jan 26, 2025.


    In a press release shared on the same day, publisher at Epigram Books Edmund Wee said: “We tried everything to make this work.”

    A combination of low foot traffic and sales “made it impossible” for Epigram Coffee Bookshop to continue running.

    “Thank you for all the love and support over the years,” the local business said, showing appreciation to their customers.

    Distraught fans headed to the comments section to share their immediate reaction.

    Author Yeo Chuen Chuen mentioned how sad she was to learn of Epigram Coffee Bookshop’s imminent closure, before thanking them for hosting her book launch.

    She added: “You’ll always be a part of this beautiful memory.”

    Another Instagram user described the news as “devastating” and hoped all is well for the local business.

    Epigram Books mentioned it remains uncertain when it comes to the possibility of opening another physical store.

    It added: “Unless rent prices relent, it’s unlikely we’ll move into another space.”

    Customers can expect a closing down sale in due time.

A near exact remake of a 1982 tennis performance shoe, Brian Lynn, New Balance global vice president of lifestyle, tells me the design is timeless and wearable. “It came out in 1982, but still has that sleekness and sharpness we are kind of known for,” he says. “We were very clear that we liked the look and aesthetic but had a lot of back and forth trying to get [the comfort] right. For us it was important to get as close to the original, but also update it so it is comfortable.”

    Lynn says he found a pristine 1980s pair on Ebay in his size. He loved the look and materials, but knew the brand had to update the fit after trying it on. “As much as it is a simple shoe, we were trying to get that shape and all the little details we had from back in those days right,” he says. “It is a lot of hard work making something look so simple.”

    Dialing in the feel came alongside embracing the premium materials of the original. That’s why the T500 fills with suede and leather, giving New Balance what Fitzsimmons calls a “premium and considered court shoe” and opening the chance to highlight differing materials and emphasize the classic design in a variety of colors and styles. “As a brand,” Lynn says, “we do those materials better than anyone else. We do see ourselves as the most premium sports brand in the world. At every level, we want to make sure it can be the best it can be.”

    Dipping back into tennis with the T500 was in part a reaction to trends, an embrace of the brand’s current growth and the desire to have a low-profile silhouette in a court style. The T500 fit the bill.

    Lynn says the success of the New Balance 550, a remake of an archival basketball shoe, was one of the first lifestyle court offerings from a brand known for both performance and lifestyle running. Once the 550 took off, that opened the door for a additional court lifestyle offerings. “The T500 just has that timeless appeal to it,” he says, “it is almost classic New Balance but done on a cupsole. For us it was nice it has that heritage, but this shoe is timeless, well made, features premium materials. It is not meant to be a hype shoe, just look good with any outfit.”

    And with so much similarity in the brand’s retro basketball styles, the T500 offers a fresh perspective. “Just given the landscape and marketplace at the moment and what the consumer is gravitating toward, it made sense to tap into our tennis archive,” Fitzsimmons says.

    With the brand’s performance tennis continuing to grow—New Balance launched a second signature shoe for American star Coco Gauff in August, adding to a mix of popular on-court models from the Boston-based brand—having a lifestyle option in the sport “sits nicely with who we are as a brand,” Lynn says. “Let’s make sure we have a lifestyle component to compliment what we are doing in the performance space.”

    Fitzsimmons says tennis is having a “thing at the minute,” both on court and in fashion off the court. “It is important to have a well-rounded view on what our tennis offering is,” she says. “Having a shoe like the T500 sitting alongside signature performance product makes a lot of sense, it just gives the consumer another alternative. It is not just performance tennis, but we do have lifestyle.”

    New Balance kicked off the T500 launch in late 2023 with the Aime Leon Dore collaboration and then created a “Quiet Please” campaign tied to the luxury positioning and materials of the mainline sneaker for early 2024. Next up comes the collaboration with Ganni, launching Sept. 20, all before a future leather version and additional color and material makeups.

    “It was important for us to get a different lens on it,” Fitzsimmons says about the Ganni collaboration. “Obviously we have our view, but bringing Ganni and adding their perspective on how the T500 can show up in the market is another fun twist.”

    Ditte Reffstrup, creative director at Ganni, tells me it’s no coincidence that Ganni chose the T500 when it came time to work with New Balance, but it isn’t just about the tennis, rather the “timeless appeal and versatility of the silhouette” that can be styled across a range of moods, adding that the minimalist roots allow it to fit everyday wear. Giving it a Ganni twist also allows the shoe to serve as a statement piece to contrast dressier looks. “Whether you’re pairing it with a relaxed sporty ensemble or using it to add contrast to a more polished suiting look, the T500 offers a freedom of styling,” Reffstrup says. “It’s all about expressing individuality, which is core to both our brands.”

    The Ganni x New Balance T500 release will give the sneaker bold leopard prints and “unexpected twists that bring new energy to the silhouette,” he says, while focusing on high-quality materials.

    “The T500’s simplicity allows for creative exploration, and its iconic status makes it a silhouette that resonates with both the past and the future,” Reffstrup says. “I really think this silhouette and shoe has a timeless appeal of a true evergreen.”

    Working with collaborative partners is a process that helps New Balance give products a fresh perspective, all while bringing a different audience to the brand, exposing consumers to a new silhouette.

    The roughly six-year gap without a tennis lifestyle model—the last silhouette, the New Balance Court 300, wasn’t a true archival model but an amalgamation of heritage designs—meant, Lynn says, that when it came time to bring tennis back, they knew they had to be in love with the shoe. “If we are going to do this again,” he says, “let’s do it correctly and properly.”

    That means the T500 will remain a key focus for the next couple of years. As lifestyle offerings continue to grow in 2025 and 2026, New Balance will feature additional court-inspired designs even if there aren’t going to be direct tennis archival pieces returning, allowing the T500 to hold a pinnacle position for both New Balance and lifestyle tennis sneakers.

    Back in July, I got a phone call from Live Nation Concerts at Ruoff Music Center. They wanted to know if the Animal Protection League would be interested in bringing some of our adoptable kittens and puppies to the concerts so the band members, staff and crew could relax and get some puppy and kitten love before their shows.

    I couldn’t believe they called us; I was practically giddy. This would give us great exposure, and of course I said yes. I asked how they found us; they had Googled us. Thank you, Google.

    A small group of dedicated volunteers committed to make this happen for our animals. It has been a lot of work, but so worth the effort. So far, they have gone to 18 concerts with our animals. They leave with our animals before the concerts start and head home.

    Our first concert was the Red Hot Chili Peppers; we have pictures of them holding our puppies that have gone viral. How cool is that? So far because of this exposure we have had 14 puppies and one kitten adopted. There are four more concerts left and we are excited for more wonderful adoptions.

    Cali — now Noodle — has started her incredible journey. Noodle was in a litter of our first puppies we used for “Puppy Time at Ruoff.” She’s been in the company of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette, Joan Jett, Morgan Wade, Creed, 3 Doors Down, Finger Eleven and 30 Seconds to Mars.

    Noodle found her forever home when we took her sisters and her to the Creed concert. The crew and band loved her! The manager, Jamie, took her backstage for the entire show, and was heartbroken at the end when she had to go back home. Jamie got the foster’s contact information and immediately started getting the logistics worked out to bring her on the road with her and the band.

    Jamie flew in from Colorado from a show to get Noodle and take her to Arkansas to catch up to her new people. One of our puppies is on tour with Creed and another, Colt, will be going on tour with Luke Bryan.

    Who would have thought that some of our shelter babies would be living the life with rock stars? As a side note, all of these adopters have gone through our normal adoption process.

    I would like to thank Noodle’s foster mom Natalie (who committed to going to all the concerts) and to all of our other amazing fosters who do such an overwhelming job taking our animals into their homes time and time again. We have wonderful, dedicated staff and volunteers at the Animal Protection League.

    • Stretch. Encourage team members to take short breaks together for a rejuvenating stretch session. This wellness activity promotes physical health, reduces muscle tension, and increases focus and productivity.
    • Stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you to work to refill as needed. It is a good habit to have to help you stay hydrated.

    Nutrition

    • Plan and cook your lunches. If you can prepare your lunches and snacks beforehand you will feel more prepared and more inclined to make healthier choices.
    • Eat foods that are high in protein and fiber- Having some carbs during your day is OK, just be mindful of the intake. Too many carbs will make you feel sluggish and may cause you to crash, you can avoid that by eating healthy fats and lean proteins to keep you full longer and give you more energy.
    • Avoid unhealthy sugary food and drinks. Working for long hours can cause you to feel hungry all the time, and hunger can cause low productivity. Instead of opting for fast foods and unhealthy snacks in such situations, eating healthy snacks can significantly benefit you.
    • Healthy snacks can keep you energized and productive throughout your day at work. Stash some of your favorite healthy snacks in your desk drawer and munch on them whenever you feel hungry.

    A few ideas for your workplace:

    • Wellness challenge. Inspire healthy behaviors among employees with a wellness challenge. From step and sleep challenges to sustainability and mindfulness challenges, provide various options that encourage the adoption of healthy habits.
    • Healthy potluck. Plan a potluck where employees can share nutritious homemade dishes. This fosters a sense of community, promotes a culture of health, and offers a chance for colleagues to discover new favorite recipes to recreate themselves.
