Why identifying lifestyle changes and treatments that reduce dementia risk is complicated | Media Centre

Studies that find a reduction in dementia risk through lifestyle changes and treatments are frequently reported in the news.

While such findings are important and should be shared with the public, they must be communicated with care, says Professor Eef Hogervorst, a neuropsychologist and epidemiologist specialising in dementia research.

In this expert comment piece, Professor Hogervorst discusses the complex factors that influence dementia risk and why we must not oversimplify research findings by presenting lifestyle changes and treatments as straightforward solutions that will work for everyone.

Why is it difficult to identify which lifestyle changes and treatments reduce dementia risk?

“Dementia prevention in public messaging is sometimes presented as a simple checklist: fix your vision, maintain your hearing, exercise regularly, and you’ll lower your risk,” says Professor Hogervorst.

“But this kind of narrative is an oversimplification and overlooks the complex web of socio-economic, genetic, and health factors that influence dementia, which aren’t easily addressed by individual actions alone.

“While many studies indicate that specific treatments or lifestyle changes are associated with a lower dementia risk, it’s important to communicate findings with care and consider the broader context in which the research is conducted. This includes examining the study conditions, the participants involved, and other influencing factors.

“The benefits observed in studies may not apply equally to everyone and can be influenced by participants’ socio-economic status, overall health, or other variables beyond the treatment or lifestyle change itself.

“For instance, if a study examining the impact of a specific treatment draws its findings from a group primarily composed of affluent individuals, any observed reduction in dementia risk might reflect their broader socio-economic advantages rather than the effectiveness of the treatment being studied.

“Affluent individuals generally have better access to healthcare and healthier lifestyles, including better diets, more exercise, and lower stress levels – all of which are associated with lower dementia risk.

“This can make it difficult to disentangle the effects of a treatment from the broader benefits of a higher socio-economic status.”

Professor Hogervorst continued: “Health factors also make it hard to conclude if lifestyle changes and treatments are having a direct impact on dementia risk.

“Heath conditions can be complex and interconnected. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol use, can impact the brain and overall health through mechanisms like reduced oxygen supply, high blood glucose levels, and plaque formation.

“It could be that a lifestyle change or treatment addresses an underlying condition that in turn impacts dementia risk.

“For instance, let’s say treating hearing loss appears to reduce dementia risk. It’s possible that someone who has their hearing loss treated may start engaging in activities they previously avoided, like exercising, which improves their cardiovascular health.

“This improvement in cardiovascular health, rather than the treatment of hearing loss alone, could be what lowers their dementia risk.

“So, it’s important to recognise that the benefit might come from addressing broader, interconnected health problems rather than treating one specific condition.

“In addition, it is unclear how genetics that increase risk for dementia – such as having an APOE ε4 gene – interact with lifestyles, with many studies showing opposing results.”

Is there anything that can be done to reduce dementia risk?

Professor Hogervorst said: “Without robust long-term treatment studies, the idea of preventing dementia with certain lifestyle changes or treatments remains, in many cases, more theoretical than practical.

“Instead of presenting lifestyle changes and treatments as guaranteed solutions, it is perhaps more realistic to say, ‘this looks promising, you might want to consider trying it,’ while being careful not to place the burden solely on individuals.

“By promoting the idea that certain treatments will reduce dementia risk for everyone, we risk reverting to a damaging 1980s mindset, where failing to take the ‘right’ preventive steps implies it’s somehow your fault if you develop a condition.

“This narrative not only oversimplifies the complexities of dementia, but also unfairly blames individuals for factors largely outside their control.”

“That said, there are reasonable evidence-backed steps that can help prevent or impact the progression of a range of age-related conditions, including dementia, vision loss, cancer, and heart disease”, says Professor Hogervorst.

“This includes a healthy Mediterranean-type diet, engaging in regular exercise, staying socially active, and avoiding smoking.

“But ultimately, the key to reducing dementia risk lies in public health strategies that address health inequalities.

“It’s not just about advising people to eat better, exercise more, and go to health checks; it’s about ensuring these options are realistically available and accessible to everyone.”

This aspect of Neanderthals’ lifestyle may have led to extinction

A new study supports the idea that Neanderthals likely went extinct because of how they lived — in isolation.

The early human species were antisocial, which could be what led to their demise, according to the study by researchers at the University of Copenhagen’s Globe Institute. It was published in the science journal Cell Genomics on Sept. 11.

Neanderthals went extinct roughly 40,000 years ago and many scientists have tried to pinpoint why. A widely accepted theory is that they remained isolated; however, evidence was lacking to confirm the theory for Western European Neanderthals until now.

The results from the recently published study suggested there were multiple isolated Neanderthal communities in Europe around the time they went extinct. They had “limited, if any, level of interactions between different Neanderthal populations in their last millennia, even though these populations were geographically very close to each other.”

The study is based on the discovery of the remains of a male Neanderthal, nicknamed Thorin, in a cave in southern France in 2015. Thorin is the most complete Neanderthal individual found in France since 1979, researchers said. Thorin was part of a small group living at the Grotte Mandrin, a French rock shelter overhanging the Rhône River Valley. The group did not have any genetic crossover with other known European Neanderthals, despite their proximity, according to the study.

“When we look at these genomes (a complete set of DNA) from Neanderthals, we see that they are quite inbred and therefore don’t have much genetic diversity. They have been living in small groups for many generations,” said Globe Institute associate professor Martin Sikora in a news release. He was one of the researchers of the study.

“We know that inbreeding reduces genetic diversity in a population, which can be detrimental to their ability to survive if it occurs over a longer term.”

Unlike modern humans, who are more connected, the results from analyzing Thorin “supports the notion that social organization of Neanderthals was different to early modern humans,” said Sikora.

There is evidence of early modern humans in Siberia “forming so-called mating networks to avoid issues with inbreeding, while living in small communities,” said another researcher from the University of Copenhagen Tharsika Vimala.

But that behaviour was not found among Neanderthals.

“This is some of the evidence that we were looking for and needed to figure out how likely this hypothesis of them going extinct because of their isolated lifestyle is,” said Vimala, adding that more genomic data is needed to “paint a better picture of their history.”

Mariah Carey’s penthouse might be sitting pretty in Manhattan, but her financials? Not so much.

The diva has stacked up mortgages totaling $18.6 million on her posh Tribeca pad — most of which was cashed out in loans. Seems like the “We Belong Together” singer’s lifestyle requires a little more than the holiday royalties from “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

The 55-year-old music legend reportedly has a taste for the finer things, blowing a shocking $1 million a month on designer clothes, gifts and extravagant expenses.

Insiders tell the Daily Mail her split from billionaire James Packer back in 2016 wasn’t just because of their personal differences, but had a lot to do with her obsession with “money, money, money.”

Think $45,000 spa treatments for her dogs, $100,000 a month on exotic flowers, and $10,000 per session for hair and makeup.

Mariah scooped up her Tribeca penthouse for $9 million cash in 1999, merging it with the apartment below.

Since then, it’s been a financial roller coaster. In 2009, she borrowed $8 million from JPMorgan Chase Bank, followed by a $2.6 million loan from City National Bank — known as the “Bank to the Stars” — in 2015.

In 2016, just before her divorce from Nick Cannon was finalized, Carey refinanced her JPMorgan mortgage to a whopping $17.6 million, pocketing a cool $9.6 million in the process, the outlet reports. Then, in 2018, the loan was bumped up again to $18.6 million with an extra $1 million thrown her way.

Despite her reported $350 million net worth, Mariah has been shedding property too. She recently offloaded her nine-bedroom Atlanta mansion for $3.92 million — a loss of $1.73 million in just 18 months after buying it for $5.65 million.

Why all the cash grabs? Well, experts have some theories. “Mariah don’t step out of the house, it cost her $150,000, $200,000 just to walk out of the house,” said ex-husband Nick Cannon in 2022, highlighting just how much it takes to keep up with her high-maintenance lifestyle.

Doug Perry, a financing advisor, thinks her earnings may be more seasonal than year-round.

“She generates more of her music royalties, endorsements and appearance fees during the holidays,” Perry told the Daily Mail. “If I was underwriting her as a borrower, I would average her income over a multi-year period.”

But with her Tribeca penthouse now worth between $30 and $35 million, according to Perry, Mariah still has some serious equity left in her property empire to borrow against. “Mariah has cashed in on the equity created by that appreciation by taking out a series of larger and larger loans,” he added.

Neanderthals’ isolated lifestyle may have contributed to their extinction

A newly discovered Neanderthal skeleton found in a French cave has provided further evidence supporting the theory that Neanderthals became extinct due to their isolated and inbred communities, according to researchers from the University of Copenhagen’s Globe Institute.

Over the past few years, scientists have debated the reasons behind the extinction of Neanderthals, while modern humans thrived around 40,000 years ago. The new study, led by the Globe Institute, reinforces the idea that Neanderthals’ social isolation and limited genetic diversity may have played a key role in their demise.

“When we look at these genomes from Neanderthals, we see that they are quite inbred and therefore don’t have much genetic diversity. They have been living in small groups for many generations. We know that inbreeding reduces genetic diversity in a population, which can be detrimental to their ability to survive if it occurs over a longer term,” explained Associate Professor Martin Sikora from the Globe Institute.

The recently discovered male Neanderthal genome in southern France belongs to a different lineage than those previously studied, further supporting the theory that Neanderthals lived in smaller, more isolated groups compared to early modern humans.

“The newly found Neanderthal genome is from a different lineage than the other late Neanderthals previously studied. This supports the notion that social organization of Neanderthals was different to early modern humans who seemed to have been more connected,” Sikora added.

In contrast, early modern humans are believed to have maintained broader social networks, which could have helped them survive by allowing for the exchange of knowledge and genes between groups. “This is in the more speculative end, but even just the notion of being able to communicate more and exchange knowledge is something humans do that Neanderthals to some extent might not have done, due to their isolated lifestyles by organizing themselves in smaller groups. And that is an important skill to have,” noted Postdoc Tharsika Vimala. She pointed to evidence of early humans in Siberia creating mating networks to avoid inbreeding, a practice that hasn’t been observed among Neanderthals.

DNA Insights into Neanderthal History

Despite the abundance of Neanderthal remains found across Europe and Asia, researchers have extracted relatively few DNA samples from them. Some of the oldest Neanderthal DNA, dating back 120,000 years, has been found in caves such as Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains, Scladina in Belgium, and Hohlenstein-Stadel in Germany.

The recently discovered genome from France is only the fifth Neanderthal genome of its kind found in Western Europe that’s younger than 50,000 years. “Our team in Copenhagen extracted DNA from his tooth, sequenced the DNA and analyzed his nuclear genome, which is the DNA found within the core of the cells. The DNA was analysed along with other known Neanderthal genomes to understand their shared history,” Sikora stated.

Further analysis of another late Neanderthal from France revealed that this individual also carried ancestry from a separate Neanderthal lineage, suggesting that multiple isolated groups may have coexisted in Western Europe shortly before their extinction.

While the concept of isolated Neanderthal communities contributing to their extinction is not new – having been proposed in relation to Neanderthals from the Altai Mountains – this latest discovery marks the first genomic evidence to support the theory in Western Europe.

“It is something that we have talked about for a while. But we needed more evidence, and this is some of the evidence that we were looking for and needed to figure out how likely this hypothesis of them going extinct because of their isolated lifestyle is. We do, however, need much more genomic data to paint a better picture of their history,” added Vimala.

Ways to stay active in State College during chilly weather | Lifestyle

Battling the cold and seasonal depression can be difficult, but having a plan and a good mindset can help you stay on task and motivated.

Here are some options you can look into to stay healthy and happy as fall begins and schedules get busy.

Take a hike

Savoring the last of the summer warmth doesn’t have to end as we drift into autumn. Hiking offers the tranquility of the outdoors during most seasons of the year and an escape from campus life.

Mount Nittany offers a moderate five-mile trail loop up to the top and back, which is open to the public. If you’re looking for something a little easier, Walnut Springs Park has a two-mile flat route that’s accessible as well.

As long as you dress according to the weather, hiking can be a fun and grounding experience as the first chill of the season rolls around. It’s even a great activity to bring friends and pets along.

Go for a walk or jog around State College

Although it may seem crowded, Penn State’s University Park campus has 7,958 acres to go gallivanting through. The hundreds of paths and walkways are sure to get you moving as long as you’re bundled up.

You can even go off campus through downtown for a more secluded option. Become a connoisseur of the Greek alphabet as you jog past frat row.

Work out at the White and Intramural Building

Students are free to use the gyms and workout facilities on campus during the year. The Intramural Building and White Building gyms are great for a full workout at no cost.

We’re aware of the hold all of the at-home workouts had on us during the pandemic, but now school has started and the air is cooler. Leaving your dorm or apartment is only going to become harder as the weather shifts.
