    Bhojpur police unravel lavish lifestyle of cyber thugs, nab 2

    Ara: They did not toil in the heat or sweat through hard work. Yet, these cybercriminals lived lavishly, donning branded clothes, investing in betting apps and stockpiling gold and silver. But their ill-gotten wealth came at a cost as the Bhojpur cyber police brought their lavish dreams crashing down.
    On Saturday, two cybercriminals, Mukesh Kumar and Dheeraj Kumar, both residents of Jamira village under Mufassil police station, were arrested by the Ara cyber police. Their story is a reminder of how modern criminals exploit technology to prey on unsuspecting victims.
    Describing their tactics, DSP-cum-SHO of the Ara cyber police station, Abu Saifee Murtaza, said, “The arrested cybercriminals used to withdraw money by swapping ATM cards and then discarding them after fraudulently withdrawing funds from people’s accounts.”
    Mukesh Kumar, one of the arrested persons, confessed to stealing over Rs 5 lakh from one Wasil Ahmad, a resident of Milki Mohalla in Ara, just last week. Ahmad had lodged a complaint with the cyber police on December 6.
    Murtaza said, “Mukesh admitted to using the stolen money to invest in betting apps and buy gold, silver and branded clothes. Their greed fuelled their lifestyle, but it also left behind a trail that led us to them.”
    The investigation, aided by the technical team and the district intelligence unit, uncovered that the fraudsters had splurged on luxury items at shopping malls in Patna and Ara. The police traced Mukesh through bills and a phone number associated with the fraudulent purchases.
    The police seized 46 grams of gold worth Rs 2.5 lakh, 548 grams of silver worth Rs 20,000, over Rs 50,000 in cash, branded clothes, four ATM cards, eight passbooks, cheque books and eight cellphones from the possession of the arrested persons.
    “Altogether eight cases have been registered against Mukesh at different police stations in Bihar and Jharkhand. Besides Mukesh and Dheeraj, other gang members include Dheeraj Kumar (another man with the same name), Sonu Kumar and Vikash Kumar. Raids are ongoing to arrest them,” the SHO said.
    The glitz of their lifestyle came at the expense of innocent victims, like Ahmad, who lost his hard-earned money. But the net is tightening around this gang and their reckless indulgence has led them to ruin.
    “No matter how cleverly they try to cover their tracks, technology and vigilance will catch up to them. Let this be a lesson for those who think they can steal their way to luxury,” the SHO said.
