Spanish La Liga: Athletic Club defeats Real Madrid | Ratopati

BBC Sport, December 5 — Jude Bellingham’s fourth goal in four games was not enough to prevent Real Madrid falling to their second La Liga loss in an enthralling encounter at Athletic Club.

The England midfielder put Carlo Ancelotti’s side on level terms in the 78th minute after he reacted first to a poor save from Julen Agirrezabala.

However, Athletic Club surged upfield and an uncharacteristic mistake from Federico Valverde sent Gorka Guruzeta through on goal and he coolly slotted past Thibaut Courtois.

Before Bellingham’s equaliser, Kylian Mbappe was given the chance to level from the spot after Agirrezabala fouled Antonio Rudiger but the Frenchman’s penalty was well saved – as happened in last week’s loss at Liverpool in the Champions League.

“He is not at his best level, but you have to give him time to adapt. He has scored 10 goals and is working to do better,” said Ancelotti after Wednesday’s defeat.

“I haven’t spoken to him. It was a complicated match – even, competitive. When we equalised we could think of having control and small details penalised us tonight.

“We missed the penalty. I don’t have to evaluate a player’s game because of a penalty that is sometimes scored and sometimes missed. Obviously he is disappointed but we have to continue.”

It was a tough moment for Mbappe to endure at Anfield where his side fell to a 2-0 defeat, but a goal on Sunday was the Frenchman’s eighth in the league and provided a platform to build from after a shaky start to life in Spain.

However, his display at the San Mames showed there is still plenty of work for Real’s coaching staff to do if they are to fully integrate Mbappe into the European champions’ way of working.

Despite the absence of Vinicius Junior on the left, Mbappe started in his unfavoured central role and often found himself drifting wide – leaving huge gaps in Real’s attacking play.

There have been glimpses of Mbappe in full flow but they have been few and far between since his summer move from Paris St-Germain.

The hosts had taken the lead eight minutes into the second half through a tidy Alex Berenguer finish from a sumptuous cross by Nico Williams.

Real pushed hard in the final minutes for an equaliser with Mbappe coming close, but Ernesto Valverde’s side held on to send San Mames Stadium wild.

Their second defeat of the La Liga season means Ancelotti’s team remain four points adrift of leaders Barcelona with a game in hand.

Athletic Club’s first league win over Real since March 2015 moves them three points behind third-placed Atletico Madrid.

Mbappé enduring ‘difficult moment’ as he misses another penalty kick and Madrid loses to Athletic

MADRID (AP) — Kylian Mbappé admitted he is going through a difficult moment as he missed another penalty kick and Real Madrid lost ground to Barcelona in the Spanish league after a 2-1 loss at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.

Mbappé had his penalty saved by Athletic goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala in the 68th minute, and later Federico Valverde gifted a late goal by losing possession on defense to allow an easy winner by Gorka Guruzeta in the 80th.

“Bad result,” Mbappé posted on Instagram. “A big mistake in a match where every detail counts. I take full responsibility for it. A difficult moment but it’s the best time to change this situation and show who I am.”

Mbappé sent the penalty shot to his right and Agirrezabala dived that way to make the stop.

“We knew that he is a good penalty taker,” Agirrezabala said. “He missed the last one and I believed that he was going to choose the same side and luckily that’s what happened.”

Mbappé, who had a goal disallowed for offside in the 13th, had also missed a penalty in Madrid’s 2-0 loss at Liverpool in the Champions League last week. He didn’t take the one for the club in a Spanish league match on Sunday, but he scored in the 2-0 win over Getafe to ease some of the pressure on him and the club.

But it was another lackluster outing for the France star, who continues to struggle in his first season since finally joining the Spanish powerhouse.

“I won’t evaluate the performance of a player because of a missed penalty. Obviously he is sad and disappointed, but you have to move on,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said about Mbappé. “He is not at his best level, but you have to give him time to adapt. You have to give him time to be able to do better.”

Ancelotti also downplayed the bad play by Valverde, saying that mistakes can happen to anyone.

Valverde had control of the ball but gave it away while trying to get past a couple of Athletic players instead of passing it to a teammate, leaving Guruzeta with an easy run into the area for his goal.

Álex Berenguer had put the hosts ahead in the 53td and Jude Bellingham equalized for Madrid in the 78th.

The defeat left Madrid four points behind Barcelona, which on Tuesday ended a three-match winless streak in the league with a 5-1 rout at Mallorca. Madrid, which has a game in hand, had won three consecutive league games since a 4-0 loss at home in the “clasico” against Barcelona.

Madrid has lost five of its last 11 matches in all competitions.

Athletic moved to fourth place with the victory, its fourth consecutive across all competitions.

Both matches on Tuesday and Wednesday were moved forward in the schedule because the clubs will be playing in the Spanish Super Cup in January.

Copa del Rey

In the Copa del Rey, first-division clubs Rayo Vallecano, Valencia and Real Betis all advanced over lower-division teams in the second round, but Villarreal lost 1-0 to fourth-division club Pontevedra and Girona fell on penalties to fourth-tier team Logrones.

Struggling Real Madrid has blocked one of its first team players, who has at least two potential suitors, from leaving the club in the upcoming January transfer window according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.

Dani Ceballos joined Los Blancos in 2017, and, with a loan spell at Arsenal wedged between, renewed his contract until 2027 when it was approaching expiry in summer last year.

This warded off several clubs interested in signing the 28-year-old for free. But the arrival of Jude Bellingham in mid-2023 from Borussia Dortmund resulted in the Andalusian having even less prominence than before.

During the current campaign, Ceballos has managed just 110 minutes spread across six appearances – one as a starter and five as a substitute – and there are reportedly at least two outfits willing to give him more playing time.

These are namely his boyhood club Real Betis and Real Sociedad. Yet according to SPORT, Madrid will block any potential exit and doesn’t even want to listen to proposals that come its way regarding the former Premier League star.

Though used sparingly by the Italian, Ceballos is considered a useful resource for head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who offers something different to most of his midfielders – especially in terms of physicality.

Ancelotti is struggling to find the right balance in his side which hasn’t managed to compensate for the loss of Toni Kroos after the German announced his shock retirement leading up to a 15th Champions League win at Wembley achieved against Borussia Dortmund back in June.

Any January reinforcements greenlit by President Florentino Perez are likely to be made in defence, where Ancelotti needs another center back and perhaps a right back with Dani Carvajal out injured for the rest of the season.

It wouldn’t make sense to further deplete midfield, where Aurelien Tchouameni is struggling with injuries and Ancelotti can’t currently get the best out of Bellingham and Fede Valverde because of the ripple effect that Kylian Mbappe’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain has caused.

Notching his 153rd appearance during the 3-1 UCL loss to AC Milan on Tuesday, Ceballos might be rewarded playing time at home to Osasuna in La Liga this weekend.

Emotional Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti said that he “doesn’t feel like talking about football” with respect to a flooding tragedy in the Valencia region.

The flood has claimed over 200 lives thus far, and resulted in Los Blancos’ La Liga fixture against Valencia at the Mestalla on Saturday being postponed.

Addressing the media in a prematch press conference to preview Tuesday’s Champions League encounter with former club AC Milan, Ancelotti said he and his squad “have sadness” because of the tragedy.

“This is the emotion we have, we are very close to all the people who have been affected. Hopefully this can be resolved soon and in this sense, I hope you can understand, talking about football is very complicated.

“We are part of this country and all this affects us a lot. Out of respect for you and also not to disrespect people, I will try to make it easy because I don’t feel like talking about football. For me, tomorrow’s game is a very special one… but I will try to talk as little as possible.” Ancelotti added.

Asked how difficult it is to prepare for a match in such circumstances, Ancelotti responded by saying: “This affects everyone because you listen, you read… And what has happened is something terrible. We have prepared for it because we are professionals and we will try to win it obviously. This is what we have to do.”

Amid FC Barcelona rival Hansi Flick voicing a preference for Sunday’s 3-1 win over Espanyol to be called off, Ancelotti also backed the decision to stop his side from taking on Valencia.

“Everyone has been clear. Nobody wanted to play. It seemed like the right decision to me, but we are not the ones in charge. Those who are at the top make that decision,” he stated on this.

“There are many ways to help, I think this is different. Football had to stop and then football can and should help.”

Reflecting again on the tragedy, Ancelotti quipped that, “What I think is that football is a party, but you can [only] do it when you’re well.

“If your family is well, then you have a party. But when people are not well, there is no need to have parties. Football has to stop because football is the most important thing… of the least important things in life.”

While Ancelotti was pushed to reveal how the group has handled the past week, he admitted that it had “been a difficult week because the atmosphere is not normal”.

“But it’s nothing that has to do with the Ballon d’Or. [It’s because of] the sadness and the different atmosphere of what is happening in Spain,” he concluded on this.

Real Madrid have opened an investigation to identify a perpetrator who allegedly aimed racist abuse at Lamine Yamal during El Clasico.

Madrid suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday night, going down 4-0 against arch rivals Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the campaign at the Bernabeu.

With the game 0-0 at half time, Robert Lewandowski scored two second half goals before Yamal scored the third of the game. Raphinha wrapped up the scoring soon after.

Yamal broke another record with his strike, becoming the youngest-ever Clasico scorer, but was allegedly subject to racist abuse from the stands during the match.

Madrid have now released a statement condemning racial abuse and revealing they have opened an investigation.

‘Real Madrid strongly condemns any type of behaviour involving racism, xenophobia or violence in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults uttered by a few fans last night in one of the corners of the stadium,’ the shared in a club statement.

‘Real Madrid has opened an investigation to locate and identify the perpetrators of these regrettable and despicable insults, in order to adopt the appropriate disciplinary and judicial measures.’

Mundo Deportivo, meanwhile, report that a fan in the front row abused the 17-year-old as he celebrated scoring his goal in the 77th minute.

It is reported that slurs such as ‘f***ing black’, ‘f***ing moor’ and ‘go to the traffic lights to sell handkerchiefs’ were heard from the stands, all in Spanish.

A video has been circulating on social media, where the alleged abuse can seemingly be heard.

In another video, meanwhile, which sees Barcelona taking a corner, more alleged abuse can seemingly be made out.

The incident is just the latest in a long line of racist issues in Spain, many of which have involved Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jnr.

Earlier this year, a court handed down six-month prison sentences for each incident after a fan was found to have racially abused Vinicius Jnr and another LaLiga star in two separate incidents and also took the decision to implement a three-year stadium ban on the supporter.

The Brazilian has also opened up on how he feels ‘targeted’ by discriminatory abuse from rival fans.

It signifies the latest racism storm that Spanish football has suffered, with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jnr also at the centre of abuse earlier this year

Yamal, meanwhile, netted his first Clasico goal on the night in his fourth appearance in the fixture to add another record to his ever-growing list.

He is the youngest player to have started a LaLiga game, which came when he lined up for Barca in the 2023-24 season against Cadiz at 16 years and 38 days old. And just a few days later, he became the youngest player to provide an assist in LaLiga.

He is also the youngest Barca player to debut in the Champions League, the youngest starter in the history of the Champions League, the youngest player to register a Champions League assist and the youngest player to win a major international trophy.

There are a number of other records that Yamal has broken listed on Barcelona’s club website, including being the youngest-ever player to play in the Champions League knockouts and being the youngest player to feature in a European Championship final.

Understandably unhappy at his situation, Simonsen sought a move away from the Nou Camp. There was interest from Barcelona’s eternal La Liga rivals Real Madrid, as well as English top-flight outfit Tottenham Hotspur – yet the striker opted to move to Charlton, who were in the English Second Division, instead. It was a move that shocked the footballing world and seemed like the unlikeliest of coups for the Addicks.

In an interview in 2013, Simonsen explained his decision to choose Charlton over the more illustrious clubs that expressed interest, saying:

“I was very stressed in my time at Barcelona, so I needed to calm down with my family and have more time with them.

Charlton’s financial irresponsibility had further repercussions as the club’s debts continued to mount, preventing them from paying for the refurbishment works necessary on their stadium after it had to be closed due to safety concerns. They were not allowed to re-open without renovating and were subsequently forced to ground-share with West Ham United and Crystal Palace for the best part of a decade before eventually returning home to The Valley in 1992.

Raphael Varane announces his shock retirement from football, aged just 31 – after the former Man United and Real Madrid star suffered a serious knee injury on his Como debut last month

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France star Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football.

Varane, 31, has struggled to stay fit in recent years and suffered a serious knee injury just 20 minutes into his debut for Como last month.

Varane was subsequently left out of Como’s Serie A squad given he’s expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time.

As a result, Le Parisien had previously reported that the 31-year-old was considering a shock retirement.

And now, Varane has called time on his glittering career, revealing the decision via a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning.

Alongside a series of photos from his career, Varane wrote in a statement: ‘They say all good things must come to an end.

‘In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.

‘I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.

‘I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates and the supporters of every team I have played for. From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey. The game at the highest level is a thrilling experience. It tests every level of your body and your mind. The emotions we experience you cannot find anywhere else. As athletes, we are never satisfied, never accepting of success. It is our nature and what fuels us.

The World Cup winner had joined Como as a free agent over the summer after his contract with Manchester United expired at the end of last season.

He made the move to Italy on a two-year deal – where he linked up with Cesc Fabregas’ side – and joined fellow former Premier League stars Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno in Como’s squad.

But now, Varane has terminated his contract with the Serie A outfit as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

Varane, who came through the youth ranks at Lens, played at the top level for 14 years.

After one season in the first team with the Ligue 1 side, the central defender joined Real Madrid in 2011 aged 18.

He went on to make 360 appearances for the Spanish giants, winning three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey, among several other trophies over a decade.

His last game in a United shirt saw him lift the FA Cup as he started the 2-1 victory over Man City at Wembley in May, while he also won the Carabao Cup with the club.

Varane also shone for France in their 2018 World Cup triumph, with the defender racking up 93 caps in total for Les Bleus before he retired from international duty at the age of 29 in February 2023.
