  • How Regular Checkups Can Prevent Major Health Issues

How Regular Checkups Can Prevent Major Health Issues

Regular health checkups are often underestimated in terms of their ability to prevent serious conditions from developing. Many people only visit the doctor when they feel unwell, or experience symptoms, but routine medical examinations are key to identifying potential health risks before they become major concerns.

By detecting problems early, healthcare providers can help individuals maintain their well-being and avoid more significant health challenges in the future.

The Role of Regular Checkups in Preventive Healthcare

Routine medical checkups are not just about addressing current health concerns but also about preventing future issues. During these visits, healthcare providers assess vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate, and review medical history.

This process allows doctors to identify potential red flags that may not yet be causing symptoms. For instance, high blood pressure is a silent condition that can lead to heart disease if left untreated, but regular monitoring can catch it before it escalates.

In addition to monitoring blood pressure, routine checkups often include screenings for cholesterol levels, diabetes, and other common risk factors. These screenings provide a comprehensive picture of a patient’s overall health and can help guide lifestyle changes or treatments that may reduce the risk of more severe conditions.

By addressing these issues early, patients can avoid the long-term consequences of unmanaged health risks.

Moreover, regular checkups provide an opportunity to discuss preventive measures tailored to individual needs. For example, for those at risk of cardiovascular issues, doctors may recommend specific lifestyle adjustments, such as changes in diet or exercise routines, to protect heart health.

This is where preventive care for heart disease plays a crucial role, as it focuses on early detection and interventions that can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing serious heart conditions.

Detecting and Managing Chronic Conditions Early

One of the most significant advantages of regular health checkups is the early detection of chronic conditions. Many chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory disorders, develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Without regular screenings, these conditions can go undiagnosed until they become severe and harder to manage.

For instance, diabetes is a condition that can cause significant health complications if not managed properly. However, through routine blood sugar tests and other screenings, healthcare providers can detect prediabetes or early-stage diabetes. With early intervention, patients can adopt lifestyle changes or medications to control their blood sugar levels and prevent the condition from worsening.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is another chronic condition that can be detected early through regular checkups. If left unmanaged, hypertension can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage. Fortunately, consistent monitoring and treatment can keep blood pressure under control, preventing these life-threatening complications.

Addressing Mental Health Through Regular Checkups

Mental health is an integral part of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked. Regular checkups provide a platform for discussing mental health concerns, which may go unnoticed or be dismissed in daily life.

With the rising awareness of mental health issues, many healthcare providers now incorporate mental health assessments into routine checkups, ensuring that individuals receive the support they need.

Mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders, can have far-reaching effects on physical health. Chronic stress, for example, has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, digestive issues, and immune system suppression.

By addressing these concerns during regular checkups, individuals can receive guidance on managing stress, coping strategies, and, if necessary, referrals to mental health professionals for further treatment.

In addition, regular checkups encourage open communication between patients and healthcare providers, creating a safe space for individuals to express any emotional or psychological concerns. This proactive approach to mental health can prevent minor issues from developing into more serious conditions that require more intensive interventions.

The Importance of Regular Cancer Screenings

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, but many types of cancer are treatable when detected early. Regular checkups often include cancer screenings, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and skin exams, which can identify cancer in its earliest stages. Early detection dramatically increases the chances of successful treatment and survival.

For example, breast cancer screenings through mammograms can detect tumors long before they are physically noticeable. Similarly, colonoscopies can identify precancerous polyps in the colon, allowing doctors to remove them before they develop into cancer.

Skin exams can reveal early signs of skin cancer, such as unusual moles or growths, which can be treated promptly if caught early.

Building a Relationship with Healthcare Providers

One often overlooked benefit of regular checkups is the relationship that develops between patients and their healthcare providers. A strong doctor-patient relationship is built on trust and open communication, which allows for more personalized and effective healthcare.

When patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and sharing their health history, healthcare providers can tailor treatments and preventive measures to suit each individual’s needs.

Over time, this relationship also makes it easier for doctors to spot subtle changes in a patient’s health, which may indicate the onset of a serious condition. Regular visits create a consistent health record, making it easier to identify patterns or trends that may signal potential problems. This proactive approach leads to more effective care and better overall health outcomes.

Furthermore, the familiarity that comes with regular visits can alleviate anxiety or apprehension that some patients may feel about going to the doctor. As patients become more comfortable with their healthcare providers, they are more likely to seek medical attention promptly when new symptoms arise, leading to faster diagnosis and treatment.

All in all, regular checkups are an essential component of preventive healthcare, offering numerous benefits that help individuals maintain their well-being and avoid major health issues. From detecting chronic conditions early to addressing mental health and providing cancer screenings, routine checkups empower patients to take control of their health.

By fostering a strong relationship with healthcare providers and staying proactive about health, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of serious conditions and lead healthier lives. Taking the time for regular checkups may seem like a small effort, but its impact on long-term health is profound, ensuring that potential issues are identified and addressed before they become major concerns.

  • With A’s last game, Oakland says goodbye to major professional sports

With A’s last game, Oakland says goodbye to major professional sports

The Raiders left for Los Angeles in 1982, came back to Oakland in 1995 and then uprooted for Las Vegas 2020.

The Golden State Warriors moved across the bay to San Francisco’s Chase Center starting in the 2019-20 season after having played in Oakland since 1971.

Oakland even briefly had an NHL team: the California Golden Seals, which entered as an expansion franchise in 1967 and played nine seasons in Oakland before moving to become the Cleveland Barons, which ceased operations after two seasons.

Oakland native and former MLB player Bip Roberts, now a real estate investor in the East Bay, said he doesn’t buy the argument that his hometown lacks the audience or money to support a major-league team.

“Everything is in place for you to be successful” in Oakland, Roberts said. “When you think about those of us who have grown here, those of us who live here, we can afford to go to any sporting event regardless to the ticket price, right? To leave a large market such as this one and you go to a smaller market [Sacramento] and then to even a smaller market [Las Vegas], it’s not a great business deal, in my opinion.”

    More Sports from NBC News

Oakland’s median household income, $96,828, and that of Alameda County, $119,931, both top state ($95,521) and national ($80,610) figures, according to the most recent census data. They are lower, however, than San Francisco’s median household income, $126,730, and those of nearby Marin ($139,644) and San Mateo counties ($151,485).

However, Las Vegas has evolved into a kind of sports capital in recent years. The city — which will have the A’s, the Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights — hosted its first Super Bowl seven months ago, and last year it hosted the Stanley Cup Final and a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Vegas is also seen as a future destination for an expansion NBA franchise.

The A’s departure hands the San Francisco Giants full run of the Bay Area market, leaving New York, Chicago, the Washington D.C./Baltimore area and greater Los Angeles as the only remaining markets with two MLB clubs.

By on-the-field metrics, the A’s have historically been at least equal to the Giants. Through Tuesday night’s action, the Oakland A’s were 4,613-4,383 (.513), while the San Francisco Giants were 5,473-5,118 (.517).

The A’s have won six American League pennants and four World Series, while the Giants have captured six National League pennants and three World Series. The A’s swept the Giants in the 1989 Fall Classic.

Yet it’s the Giants — potentially on their way to finishing .500 or worse in their seventh season out of eight — who are staying put. The fifth most valuable club in baseball with an estimated worth of $3.8 billion, the Giants play in one of MLB’s most beloved ballparks, which has helped the team blow the A’s out of the bay in attendance since Oracle Park opened in 2000.

A’s fans, repulsed by Fisher’s move, have stayed away in droves this season. The franchise is dead last in attendance across MLB, averaging just 10,635 fans per game.

Roberts pinned the blame on A’s management. Even before Fisher and real estate developer Lewis Wolff bought the team in 2005, the franchise had a well-earned reputation for focusing on its bottom line at the expense of keeping talent long-term.

Prime examples of stars lost include Reggie Jackson in the ’70s, Mark McGwire in the ’90s and Jason Giambi in the early 2000s. More recently, East Bay native Marcus Semien left as a free agent in 2021, then won a World Series ring with the Texas Rangers last year.

“That was something that’s been ingrained in the organization, to get these players to have such a following and backing in the city, and then they’re gone,” Roberts said. “And I think it just wore on people.”

As the final A’s game approaches and fans share memories of the Oakland Coliseum across social media and elsewhere, the depth of the loss is setting in, he added.

“I’m starting to get saddened about what’s about to happen,” Roberts said. “I’ve been putting off emotions for a long time.”

“Make Us Proud”: Rebeca Andrade Fans Flood Gymnast with Love After Major Career Announcement After Paris Olympics

Wow, 2024 has been a magical year for Rebeca Andrade! Well, just after coming back from three ACL injuries in four years, this 25 years old athlete made history. In doing so, she became the first Brazilian woman to win four Olympic medals at the Paris Olympics, which is such a big deal! Recently, she added another win by taking gold on the uneven bars at the Brazilian Artistic Gymnastics Championship! And on a related note, just hours ago, Andrade shared on what she thought about retiring after the Paris Games, which made her fans emotional.

On Instagram, Rebeca Andrade recently shared a vulnerable post, delving into her personal journey filled with triumphs and setbacks. She remembers on March 16, 2024; she wrote a farewell letter to gymnastics on the phone, convinced that this would be her last Olympic cycle. In that letter, she opened up about the hurtful things people said like being called “ungrateful” and “selfish.”

It really affected Rebeca Andrade, but she also emphasized the importance of thinking about herself: “Sometimes I need to think about myself, and it’s not so wrong!” Through all the challenges, she found strength in hugs, conversations, and moments of caution that helped her keep going. Like when Simone Biles hugged her at the Paris Olympics after Rebeca won!

Fast forward to September 22, 2024, and Rebeca Andrade’s outlook has shifted. Instead of closing the door on her gymnastics career, she’s filled with pride as she reflects on everything she’s achieved. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would become the greatest Olympian in the history of my country,” she admitted.

It’s incredible to think that during the Paris Olympics, she outscored Simone Biles, the GOAT, on the floor exercise! This achievement made her the most decorated gymnast in Brazilian history. The journey, filled with tears, pain, and joy, has taken her further than she ever expected, and she’s embracing it all.

Andrade also talked about the responsibility of being a role model, saying it’s an honor that comes naturally to her. At just 25, she knows she has so much more to learn, but she carries a treasure trove of experiences—both good and tough—that she’s eager to share. She wants everyone to know that behind the medals and accolades, she’s just a person who deals with challenges but keeps rising to the occasion with courage. And this message of hers was inspirational for everyone over there. When her fans saw this post, they shared their views too.

    Rebeca Andrade steals hearts everywhere!

One fan captured the excitement perfectly, commenting, “You are a GIANT, little fox! SO PROUD to know that you are BRAZILIAN and a WARRIOR. I want to CHEER FOR you even MORE, JUMP TIC, JUMP ❤️🔥🔥” This really sums up Rebeca Andrade’s amazing journey as the most decorated Brazilian gymnast, boasting six Olympic and nine world medals!

Rebeca Andrade was instrumental in helping Brazil secure its first Olympic team medal—a bronze—while also snagging individual silvers in the all-around and vault, and a gold on the floor exercise, even outshining Simone Biles in the process. But at the same time, Andrade wanted that and stated, “I really wanted a gold medal. I was really fighting hard to make it happen, and I wanted to hear the Brazilian national anthem play again at the Olympics. I was very proud of myself; it wasn’t an easy Olympics.”

Another fan added., “Rebecca so young, so mature, so girly, so woman, so champion and so warrior. You are light and wherever you go, you shine. God bless you on this well-deserved vacation. What an incredible year! But God still has beautiful dreams for you. Believe that. All my love, care, respect, and admiration.”

Since the Tokyo Olympics, Andrade has truly stood out, especially after making her Olympic debut in Rio 2016, as the teenager who caught everyone’s attention by qualifying for the all-around final. Despite finishing 11th, she set the stage for her future. Her journey hasn’t been easy; after withdrawing from the 2017 world championships due to an ACL tear. Many feared she might retire. But she persevered through three ACL injuries, eventually making history in Tokyo by becoming the first Brazilian woman to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics, claiming silver in the all-around and gold in vault.

Rebeca Andrade followed this with gold in vault and silver on uneven bars at the 2021 World Championships. By 2022, she was crowned the first South American World All-Around Champion. She was the silver medalist in 2023 after Biles returned, and beat Biles for the world vault title.

One more fan beautifully expressed, “Rest and come back even stronger to make us proud, just like you did this cycle! 🫶🏻😍🙌🏼💨” Another echoed the sentiment, saying, “May God grant you a long life and many blessings in your journey. PARADISE loves you!” And one more chimed in, “Rebeca, the woman who has conquered the world and continues to do so. You’re amazing, and you are the pride of the Brazilian people! 🥹❤️”

Rosana Marques, the center’s coordinator, said demand tripled since her success. Erika Martins, a mom of two aspiring gymnasts, called Andrade an “immense motivation.

Andrade’s journey from a single-parent home to Olympic champion has inspired many.

  • The exploding device attacks dealt a major but not crippling blow to Hezbollah, analysts say

The exploding device attacks dealt a major but not crippling blow to Hezbollah, analysts say

BEIRUT — The waves of remotely triggered explosions that hit pagers and walkie-talkies carried by Hezbollah members in grocery stores, on streets and at a funeral procession this week made for an eerie and shocking spectacle.

Analysts said Hezbollah will be able to regroup militarily and find communications workarounds after the attack, but the psychological effects will likely run deep.

The explosions — widely blamed on Israel, which has neither confirmed nor denied involvement — killed at least 37 people, including two children, wounded more than 3,000 and deeply unsettled even Lebanese who have no Hezbollah affiliation.

The detonating devices hit workers in Hezbollah’s civilian institutions, including its health care and media operations, as well as fighters, dealing a blow to the militant group’s operations beyond the battlefield. It is not clear how many civilians with no link to Hezbollah were injured.

The attacks also exposed the weaknesses in the low-tech communications system the group had turned to in an attempt to avoid Israeli surveillance of cellphones.

Retired Lebanese army Gen. Elias Hanna described the attacks as the “Pearl Harbor or 9/11 of Hezbollah.”

Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center think tank who researches Hezbollah, said that because the blasts hit people across the group’s institutions, the attack was “like a sword in the guts of the organization.” Hundreds of people were severely wounded, including many who lost eyes or hands.

“It will require time to heal and replace those who were targeted,” he said.

But Hage Ali and other analysts agreed that the loss of manpower is not a crippling blow. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has said the group’s fighting force numbers more than 100,000, meaning that the attack — as dramatic as it was — would have put only a small percentage of its militants out of commission even if all those wounded and killed were fighters.

Qassim Qassir, a Lebanese analyst close to Hezbollah, said the detonating devices actually struck mostly civilian workers within the group and not military or security officials, which has allowed it to contain the impacts on its war effort.

Hezbollah, which is Lebanon’s strongest armed force, has exchanged fire with Israel’s military almost daily since Oct. 8, the day after a deadly Hamas-led assault in southern Israel triggered a massive Israeli counteroffensive and the ongoing war in Gaza.

Since then, hundreds have been killed in strikes in Lebanon and dozens in Israel, while tens of thousands on each side of the border have been displaced. Hezbollah said its strikes are in support of its ally, Hamas, and that it will halt its attacks if a cease-fire is implemented in Gaza.

Hezbollah continued to launch rockets over the border Wednesday and Thursday after the pager and walkie-talkie attacks, though at a slower pace than usual.

The impacts on Hezbollah’s communications network are likely to be more disruptive than the human loss.

“Telecommunications is the nerve of military operations and communications,” said retired Lebanese army Gen. Naji Malaeb, an expert on security affairs. A delay in communication could spell disaster, he said.

During a speech in February, Hezbollah’s leader, Nasrallah, warned members against carrying cellphones, which he said could be used to track them and monitor their communications.

But long before that, Hezbollah relied on pagers and its own private fiber-optic landline network to avoid the monitoring of its communications.

The pagers that detonated Tuesday were a new model the group recently began using. It appears that small quantities of explosives had been implanted in the devices at some stage in the manufacturing or shipping process and then remotely detonated.

Hanna said the group might rely more heavily on its landline network — which Israel has attempted to tap into on multiple occasions — going forward, or on even lower-tech solutions such as hand-delivered letters.

“Maybe you have to go back to human communication, the postman,” he said. “This is what is really helping (Hamas leader) Yahya Sinwar not to be targeted” in his hiding spot in Gaza.

Orna Mizrahi, a senior researcher at the Tel Aviv-based think tank Institute for National Security Studies and former intelligence analyst for the Israeli military and prime minister’s office, said losing the ability to communicate through pagers is a “dramatic blow,” but the militant group has other communication methods and will rebuild their communication network.

The bigger damage to Hezbollah was psychological, she said.

“It’s the humiliation of having such an operation, it shows how much the organization is exposed to the Israeli intelligence,” she said.

Amal Saad, a lecturer in politics and international relations at Cardiff University in Wales who researches Hezbollah, said much of the attack’s impact was the “demoralization and the fear” it sowed.

“It’s not just a security breach against the military,” she said. “Hezbollah’s entire society is going to be extremely concerned because everything is liable now to being hacked and rigged.”

The group will “be rethinking many things now, not just the pagers,” Saad said.

  • Understanding The 5 Major Tastes That Make Up Our Food Experience: Food Expert Explains

Understanding The 5 Major Tastes That Make Up Our Food Experience: Food Expert Explains

Have you ever wondered why some people like the taste of karela, while others don’t? Likewise, you will find a group enjoying spice in their foods, and then some prefer their meals light and bland. Taste preferences are unique to each; in fact, it tops the list of what consumers care about when deciding what to eat or drink. Our genetic makeup and life experiences also have a lot to do with which tastes we find appealing and which ones our senses forbid. In this article, we plan to decode the science of our taste buds and understand why different types of foods taste different. Let’s elucidate further.
Also Read: The Secret To Umami’s Magic Chemistry On Our Taste Buds

Taste Vs Flavours: What Is The Difference Between The Two:

Food expert Krish Ashok, who goes by the name ‘masalalab’ on Instagram, shared a post explaining the difference between flavours and taste. According to him, we often use the terms ‘flavours’ and ‘taste’ interchangeably. But, if you dive in deep, you will find a striking difference between the two.

Flavour is a multi-dimensional experience, made up of taste, aroma, visual, sound and sensations. In fact, 80 percent of our perception of flavours is the smell. On the other hand, taste is a sense organ that contributes to less than 20% of the overall perception of flavours. “We can smell more than 10,000 aromas, but we can taste only five things – sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami,” explains Krish Ashok.

He further explains that when a person says, “biryani tastes wonderful”, what he/she means is the look of the food, the aroma of the garam masala (in the dish) and the umami in the meat have made the dish flavourful.

The Science Of Taste: What Are The 5 Taste Sensations?

According to the Collins Dictionary, the taste of something is the individual quality, which a food has when you put it in your mouth. “It also helps distinguish one food from the other,” reads the definition. In other words, taste is the result of a substance landing on the receptors of your tongue, activating the taste sensation and signals in the brain.

Food expert Krish Ashok says that there are five specific types of tastes that our brain identifies – “sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami”.
Also Read: Author Krish Ashok Explains “Indian Food Terms” In An Oh-So-Relatable Manner

    Taste 1. Sweet:

Sweet tastebuds detect sugar and sugar substitutes like aspartame and sucralose, which are artificial sweetening agents you find in different foods.

    Taste 2. Salty:

Salt tastebuds detect sodium. They also respond to potassium, which is why you will find low sodium salt for high blood pressure containing potassium chloride.

    Taste 3. Bitter:

Bitter tastebuds detect alkaloids, many of which, as per the food expert, could be poisonous. For instance, caffeine is an alkaloid, which makes coffee or tea taste bitter.

    Taste 4. Sour:

Sour tastebuds detect protons. So, acidic things are sour. Take the citric acid in lime and amla and tartaric acid in tamarind for instance.

    Taste 5. Umami:

Umami tastebuds detect glutamates, a type of amino acid. Foods like soy sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes, cheese, meat, seafood and Ajinomoto or MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) contain glutamates, consumption of which activates both your salt and umami tastebuds.

Why Do Certain Bitter Foods Taste Sweet After Consumption?

If you drink water after eating amla, it leaves a sweet aftertaste in your mouth. Ever wondered why? Krish Ashok explains that amla is citric acid, which is water soluble in nature. So, when you drink water after having amla the acid is diluted and the sour tastebuds turn off, activating our sweet tastebuds. “So it turns out, acidic foods also help trigger sweet tastebuds,” he adds.

The science of taste is amazing. Understanding it well helps evolve your overall food experience; or as Krish Ashok says, “Your tongue is like the boss at work”. Enjoy your meal!

Kirby Smart’s officiating comments underline major college football issue

Player safety concerns continue to be points of emphasis across college football with this season’s rules changes. After a series of questionable calls from officials during Week 3, coaches sounded off on faulty flags. Hours after Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi ripped officials following his team’s 34-24 win over West Virginia, Georgia’s Kirby Smart questioned why he saw so much yellow on the field during the Bulldogs’ victory at Kentucky.

Narduzzi received a fine, while Smart’s comments were light in nature and encompassed a college football-wide point of view. Georgia received nine penalties for 85 yards against the Wildcats, the second time they reached that total and the most in a single game since 2018.

“I watched games today and it was like, crazy, we’re higher than we’ve been (with penalties), I watch all these games and they’re higher than they’ve ever been,” Smart said, via Dawgs247. “I’m like what’s going on? We’ve been a low-penalty, smart team and I can’t figure out. I don’t know if it’s the wya it’s being called higher, Is it being Calle brighter, because everybody’s got more. We’ve got to reel it in some.”

Late Kick host Josh Pate speculated Sunday night that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s injury last week that resulted in a concussion against the Buffalo Bills created an unnecessary uproar, leading college football decision-makers to engage in conference calls before Week 3 games in hopes of emphasizing hits on quarterbacks and protecting players.

Tagovailoa’s injury did not come as a result of late hit, by the way, he simply lowered his head on a routine tackle by Buffalo’s Damar Hamlin. As noted by Pate, among Saturday’s worst whistles, targeting was called on an Indiana defender after making a form tackle on UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers resulting in a roughing the passer flag. Oregon was called for a similar clean hit at Oregon State.

Officials whistled Florida’s Trikweze Bridges for targeting after he tackled a Texas A&M receiver who left his feet to make a catch. Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker received a personal foul against Kentucky after he took quarterback Brock Vandagriff to the ground following a pass. It was not a dirty or vicious hit, rather a textbook tackle and take down.

And lastly, South Carolina saw penalties nullify both of its defensive touchdowns against LSU, the second coming on Nick Emmanwori’s 100-yard interception return in the fourth quarter when defensive end Kyle Kennard pushed Garrett Nussmeier to the ground during the return.

“Nussmeier, no longer a quarterback because once the ball is picked he’s not a quarterback, gets sought out and knocked down with someone’s hands on his shoulder and because he does a great job of acting on the ground, he’s flagged,” Pate said. “The interception counts, but the points don’t. It was a horrific day yesterday.”

Earlier in the game, officials called back O’Donnell Fortune’s interception return Kennard committed a horse-collar on Nussmeier, a play outlawed this offseason and can now occur within the tackle box, as what happened with the Gamecocks.

Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Sunday he and South Carolina’s Ray Tanner called the SEC office asking for explanations on “several calls” that took place against the Tigers. Beamer mentioned that South Carolina rarely submits plays for review. This comes after LSU’s Brian Kelly sought answers from the SEC after a punt block in the game was deemed legal when it should not have counted, he said.

South Carolina and LSU combined for 52 total penalties this season, the most in the SEC, after 22 referees threw flags inside Williams Brice Stadium.

How major sports stadiums changed America

“The stadium,” writes Frank Andre Guridy in ‘The Stadium – An American History of Politics, Protest, and Play’ (Basic Books), “has never been a merely a sports facility.”

From the first wooden ballparks, through the huge concrete edifices of the 1950s and 1960s and on to today’s vast, state-of-the-art arenas, Guridy reveals just what the stadia means to American life — extending beyond staging sports events to fulfilling a far wider civic role.

“Americans have gathered at these facilities for more than a century,” he explains. “Like cathedrals, these places are where rituals take place on and off the field.”

But, says Guridy, who is a professor of history and African American studies at Columbia University, stadiums have also become public squares, used often as much by activists as athletes, by politicians as pop stars.

In the not-so-distant past, for example, stadiums were guilty of entrenching division and discrimination.

Women were banned from locker rooms and press boxes and racial segregation was commonplace in the all-White leagues of the Jim Crow era.

But as Guridy contends, they have also been at the forefront of American activism.

In New York, for example, stadia became “one of America’s battlegrounds for democracy” with European immigrant communities in the 1930s making Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden (MSG) focal points for the fight against fascism.

In the 1940s, meanwhile, MSG staged the ‘Negro Freedom Rallies’, making it what Guridy calls “a platform for claims-making.”

While corporatization and the shift toward private rather than municipal ownership has seen the role of stadia change, athletes such as Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinhoe have demonstrated the enduring power of stadiums as protest points.

Or, as the Presidential race hots up, the place where intense political battles are fought.

Moreover, stadia still fulfill their primary purpose – bringing people together.

“Investing in a stadium is best understood as a commitment to a public good, akin to budgeting for public parks and other public institutions that facilitate community cohesion,” writes Guridy.

“Ultimately, the stadium needs to be recognized, and perhaps actively cultivated, as the multifaceted institution that it has always been in American life.” –David C. Kaufman
