On Saturday, Manchester City confirmed that their director of football, Txiki Begiristain, would depart the club at the end of the season and be replaced by Hugo Viana. The former Newcastle player, who has been director of football at Portuguese giants Sporting since 2018, will “collaborate” with his predecessor at the Premier League club before assuming the role in the summer of 2025, according to a brief club statement.

While the statement was concise and to the point, Begiristain’s departure from Manchester City could have a significant impact on the future of English football. Since moving to Manchester in 2012 to join Pep Guardiola, following their successful tenure at Barcelona, Begiristain has helped steer City to seven league titles out of a possible twelve, alongside two FA Cup triumphs and the club’s first-ever Champions League trophy, when they defeated Inter Milan in 2023. Without doubt, Begiristain was Guardiola’s right-hand man, as the pair transformed City into the English powerhouse they are today. So, who is the man tasked with maintaining this success and preserving Begiristain’s legacy?

The Numbers Behind Hugo Viana’s Success at Sporting

Since his move to Sporting in September 2018, Viana has earned a reputation as one of European football’s most impressive directors of football, helping the Lisbon club not only regain parity with their domestic rivals but also surpass them in various ways. For instance, prior to Viana and his head coach Rúben Amorim guiding the club to domestic success, Sporting had not won the Portuguese league title in 19 years. They have since lifted the Liga Portugal title on two occasions—during the 2020/21 and 2023/24 seasons—while also sitting comfortably at the top of the league table at the time of writing. Furthermore, their second-place finish in the 2021/22 season marked the club’s third-highest points tally in the history of the Portuguese top-flight, highlighting the excellence now expected under Viana and Amorim’s leadership.

    Hugo Viana

Naturally, Amorim’s tactics and coaching have played a crucial role in Sporting’s resurgence. However, while the young head coach has outmanoeuvred the likes of Porto and Benfica on the pitch, it is Viana’s prowess off the pitch that has ultimately led him to Manchester City. When considering the overall market value of Sporting’s squad today, it shows a remarkable increase of €282 million. As illustrated in the graphic above, this means that Sporting’s rise under Viana represents the eighth-largest increase in squad value worldwide. Notably, this is more than double the increase seen in Porto’s squad (+€108 million) and over three times that of Benfica’s (+€92.1 million) during the same period.

What makes these numbers even more impressive is that Sporting have generated no less than €589 million from player sales during Viana’s tenure, with seven of the club’s top ten highest sales occurring under his leadership. While Benfica are the only Portuguese club to have made more from player sales in the same period (€972 million), what likely caught Manchester City’s attention is that Sporting’s cross-city rivals have also spent €185 million more on player signings than Sporting during this time. Additionally, when assessing the purchase value (the difference between transfer fees paid and the current market value of each player), Sporting boast the most impressive return in Liga Portugal, with +€276 million, compared to Porto’s +€217 million and Benfica’s +€164 million.

In short, since Viana’s arrival, Sporting have outperformed their main domestic rivals in the transfer market, and this success has been reflected on the pitch, as they continue their push for a third league title in seven seasons. While the 41-year-old administrator will need to prove he can replicate this success at a much bigger club in a far more competitive league, there is no denying that few have done as good a job in their role as Viana has at Sporting, across the entirety of European football.

Manchester City’s renowned sporting director Txiki Begiristain is leaving the club at the end of the season.

Begiristain was integral to the appointment of Pep Guardiola in 2016 and his working relationship with the manager has seen City dominate the Premier League and win the Treble.

Begiristain, who is expected to retire after turning 60 in August, has been the mastermind behind overwhelmingly positive transfer business since joining the club in 2012. Girona’s Quique Carcel is believed to be in the frame for the role as City embark on a new era.

Mail Sport revealed last summer that the former Barcelona winger’s time at the helm was coming to a close and that his departure would be linked to Guardiola’s own future.

Begiristain’s departure plan was to make sure not to directly coincide with Guardiola leaving – but to come at around the same time.

That City are looking at quickly appointing a new sporting director to work alongside him for a handover period offers a potential buffer to that possibility and the chance for the successor to learn the ropes.

Guardiola’s contract expires at the end of the season and the Catalan usually communicates a decision on his future during the November international break.

Sources have expected him to bid farewell next summer but he is yet to confirm his next steps.

He is a close friend of Pep Guardiola, having been the sporting director who appointed him at Barcelona after the sacking of Frank Rijkaard. They first met as team-mates at Barca.

‘Txiki is the key to all of this,’ Guardiola said years later on his appointment at City in 2016. ‘When nobody else would take a risk on me, when maybe 3 per cent of the people at Barca believed in me, he was the one who insisted on my appointment to the first team. None of this would have been possible without him.’

He also said: ‘If Txiki worked for Chelsea, I would probably have called Chelsea,’ Guardiola said in 2016.’

He has been instrumental in bringing in some of their most iconic players, such as Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Ederson.

Mail Sport exclusively reported in May that Guardiola is expected to leave the 2023 Treble winners.

City will give Guardiola space to make a final decision on his future – and want the most successful boss in their history to extend his stay after 15 major trophies, including delivering a first Champions League.

Asked recently about leaving, he said: ‘I’m not going to talk about this subject. When it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen.’

During Begiristain’s time at the club, they have won six Premier League titles, a Champions League, two FA Cups, six EFL Cups, and the Club World Cup.

While other senior figures such as former chief football operations officer Omar Berrada have come and gone – in his case taking up the CEO role at City, Begiristain has been part of the club’s fabric for over a decade.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to kick him out of the club after the pair got into a heated dressing room row.

Schmeichel was an integral part of United’s winning machine during his seven years at the club between 1991 and 1999.

He won five league titles and finished on the ultimate high of a Champions League triumph to complete a historic Treble in his final season.

But it was not all plain sailing for the giant Dane at Old Trafford, as Schmeichel has claimed Ferguson wanted to sack him following a 2-0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield in 1995, and he only saved his Old Trafford career by apologising to his manager and team-mates.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, Schmeichel explained: ‘Sir Alex Ferguson picked on me after a game and the second half was so bad, but I made a lot of saves and I felt like I kept the team in. He blamed me for my goal kicks.

‘I felt really hard done by for him picking on me. My head went and that was probably my biggest regret in football and I’m not repeating that.

‘On a Monday morning, he called me into his office and said that he was going to sack me and that we can’t have a player doing this. I accepted that and I apologised to him.

‘He had a meeting in the changing room after and it was the worst I’ve ever seen him. He was so angry. He never done that in training before. He left and then I apologised to the team. My behaviour was so out of order. There are certain things you can do and certain things you can’t do.

‘In the 90 minutes, I feel like you can say whatever because it’s all about winning. Before the game and after the game, you can’t say anything. It’s up to the manager or the coach to talk about what happened. You can’t go in and say you played bad, but I did that. I shouldn’t have done that. But he never brought it up again.’

Former United players and staff have often talked about Ferguson’s infamous ‘hairdryer treatment’ where he would turn on his team to get a reaction from them.

Addressing Ferguson’s man-management style at United, Schmeichel insisted the Scot would often pick on certain players and enjoyed confrontation as he felt it would get the best out of the group.

Schmeichel conceded that the exchanges between Ferguson and his senior stars would often be ‘brutal to watch’, but it clearly worked as United went on to win 13 title in the first 21 years of the Premier League.

‘What I learned very quickly was that Sir Alex Ferguson needed an out,’ Schmeichel added.

‘Very often it was in games where things were going well, or he needed something off his chest. He had certain players that he would do that to.

‘I was one of them, Gary Pallister was one of them and Roy Keane was one of them. Ryan [Giggs] was also one of them. It would have been brutal to watch but you were allowed to talk back as a player. He wanted that confrontation because it was shaking things up. He wanted that.

‘What I learned from him was that 95% of everything he said was by the sign and he was thinking about it and was waiting for the opportunity to say that. He would pick those moments and once it happened, gone.’

Man Claims He Was Scammed By Online Date In Delhi Cafe, Shares Story On Reddit

A Delhi man claimed he was scammed by a woman he connected with online and took to Reddit to share his experience. “On a dating app, I matched with a girl. She insisted on meeting at a public place and then sent Hudson Lane location outside Bagheera cafe. I met this girl outside the Bagheera Cafe on Hudson Lane, and she encouraged me to go in. However, as soon as I walked in, I had a bad feeling,” he wrote in the post.

Upon entering the establishment, the waiter gave them menus and the woman placed her order. After a few minutes, she excused herself to use the restroom, which was actually the fire escape area, the man came to know. When the waiter brought her order, she did not touch the food. She had the vodka shots and the man claims that he later discovered that they were water shots.

The man was left with a huge bill at the end of the date. In the Reddit post, he explains, “She pretended to be getting calls from home, that she would have a headache in less than ten minutes, and to want to leave. Without touching any food or beverages, she wants me to pay the bill and depart as well. But before I could do anything, she left the cafe, and the waiter quickly brought me a bill for Rs 17170. When I ask for a discount, they say they only give 10% off food items, but they force me to pay Rs 16000. When I give them my card, they say there will be an additional 4% charge, which is how they got me to pay with cash.”

He adds, “This seems to be a large-scale scam because a few hours later when my friend and I went there, we noticed the same girl at another table. When we attempted to enter the cafe, security stopped us and refused to let us in because they knew the girl was defrauding other patrons”.

The Reddit user also alleged that local police had a part to play in this scam. “I lost Rs 16000 and don’t know how to recover my money,” he wrote. He cautioned other people against visiting this “gloomy location”. In the comments, many people criticised the man for falling for what they consider a very “common” scam. Check out some of the reactions below:

“How’s it that this scam is going on and on and on for at least a couple of years and one or other man happens to fall for the same.”

“This is a very common scam in Delhi and you still fell for it. Sigh!”

“This is a well-known scam in Delhi, posted in mainstream news channels and so many other forums. You could have escaped this one.”

“Babe wake up there’s another dating scam post on Reddit.”

“Bro, were you living under a rock? This scam has been all over the internet.”

“At this point, we need a Reddit sub-sidebar of restaurants to avoid.”

Before this, a Reddit post explaining how a Thane man fell for a “Tinder scam” had gone viral. He reportedly received a staggering bill of Rs 44,000 at a restaurant. The incident was shared by his friend, who warned others and posted a picture of the bill. The man’s date ordered a large number of items, including 18 Jagerbombs, two Red Bulls, French fries, salted peanuts, four chocolate truffle cakes, and a special mix. • Montana man to be sentenced for cloning giant sheep to breed large sheep for captive trophy hunts

Montana man to be sentenced for cloning giant sheep to breed large sheep for captive trophy hunts

HELENA, Mont. — An 81-year-old Montana man faces sentencing in federal court Monday in Great Falls for illegally using tissue and testicles from large sheep hunted in Central Asia and the U.S. to illegally create hybrid sheep for captive trophy hunting in Texas and Minnesota.

Prosecutors are not seeking prison time for Arthur “Jack” Schubarth of Vaughn, Montana, according to court records. He is asking for a one-year probationary sentence for violating the federal wildlife trafficking laws. The maximum punishment for the two Lacey Act violations is five years in prison. The fine can be up to $250,000 or twice the defendant’s financial gain.

In his request for the probationary sentence, Schubarth’s attorney said cloning the giant Marco Polo sheep hunted in Kyrgyzstan has ruined his client’s “life, reputation and family.”

However, the sentencing memorandum also congratulates Schubarth for successfully cloning the endangered sheep, which he named Montana Mountain King. The animal has been confiscated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.

“Jack did something no one else could, or has ever done,” the memo said. “On a ranch, in a barn in Montana, he created Montana Mountain King. MMK is an extraordinary animal, born of science, and from a man who, if he could re-write history, would have left the challenge of cloning a Marco Polo only to the imagination of Michael Crichton,” who is the author of the science fiction novel Jurassic Park.

Schubarth owns Sun River Enterprises LLC, a 215-acre (87-hectare) alternative livestock ranch, which buys, sells and breeds “alternative livestock” such as mountain sheep, mountain goats and ungulates, primarily for private hunting preserves, where people shoot captive trophy game animals for a fee, prosecutors said. He had been in the game farm business since 1987, Schubarth said.

Schubarth pleaded guilty in March to charges that he and five other people conspired to use tissue from a Marco Polo sheep illegally brought into the U.S. to clone that animal and then use the clone and its descendants to create a larger, hybrid species of sheep that would be more valuable for captive hunting operations.

Marco Polo sheep are the largest in the world, can weigh 300 pounds (136 kilograms) and have curled horns up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long, court records said.

Schubarth sold semen from MMK along with hybrid sheep to three people in Texas, while a Minnesota resident brought 74 sheep to Schubarth’s ranch for them to be inseminated at various times during the conspiracy, court records said. Schubarth sold one direct offspring from MMK for $10,000 and other sheep with lesser MMK genetics for smaller amounts.

In October 2019, court records said, Schubarth paid a hunting guide $400 for the testicles of a trophy-sized Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep that had been harvested in Montana and then extracted and sold the semen, court records said.

Sheep breeds that are not allowed in Montana were brought into the state as part of the conspiracy, including 43 sheep from Texas, prosecutors said.

The five co-conspirators were not named in court records, but Schubarth’s plea agreement requires him to cooperate fully with prosecutors and testify if called to do so. The case is still being investigated, Montana wildlife officials said.

Schubarth, in a letter attached to the sentencing memo, said he becomes extremely passionate about any project he takes on, including his “sheep project,” and is ashamed of his actions.

“I got my normal mindset clouded by my enthusiasm and looked for any grey area in the law to make the best sheep I could for this sheep industry,” he wrote. “My family has never been broke, but we are now.”

Blue Man Group made its long-awaited return to the capital with a premiere at the London Palladium, bringing its Bluevolution World Tour to the UK for the first time.

The show continues at the Palladium until Sunday September 29, before continuing to Salford, Edinburgh and finally Bristol.

It comes after earlier this month Laura admitted she feels ‘more happy and secure about herself’ after facing cruel trolls – as the presenter opened up about her blossoming romance with a married CEO.

She is well known for delighting fans with her stunning looks across her social media pages.

But the mother-of-two has admitted her success has come with a cost and she’s been forced to grow a thick skin to face cruel online trolls.

In July, MailOnline reported that Laura has been dating CEO James Pettigrew, 44, since January, and the star has now admitted how secure she has felt recently, despite dealing with trolling about her looks.

‘It’s really hard when you read comments like, ”Oh, she’s done too much of this to her face”,’ she told The Sun, adding she thought it was because of her cheekbones.

‘That’s my face, and unfortunately, that’s the way it is. Or people say, ‘Oh, she’s got fake boobs’. And I’m like, I haven’t, actually. But if that’s what people want to believe.

‘It’s kind of a bit laughable that people make statements and they don’t know the facts.’

But Laura has ultimately found her balance and it’s mainly thanks to getting older, as she admitted ‘the older you get, I think you generally feel more well’ and added she now feels ‘more happy in myself and secure’ in herself and who she is.

She paid a special tribute to her loved ones including her mum, dad and her children – calling herself ‘very lucky’ for having such ‘supportive’ people around her ‘who accept and love each other’.

Laura shares son Rocco and daughter Tahlia with her broker ex-husband Alex Goward, who she married in 2012 and divorced in 2022.

Spilling some of her beauty secrets, the Channel 4 star once again proved is all product of a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, rather than botox or surgery.

She takes gold collagen shots on a daily basis and her love for fitness and activity led her to ran the London Marathon for WellChild in April.

The blonde beauty revealed she has ‘never smoked’ and only has ‘an occasional drink’, while also recently losing a stone following a low-carb diet.

Sources close to the couple say CEO James has been ‘spending all his time’ with Laura.

But the pair’s relationship has ‘upset’ James’ estranged wife, with a friend telling MailOnline Jackie was ‘unaware’ her husband was dating Laura at the beginning of their relationship, and is now going through a painful divorce.

Laura and James, who shares two daughters with Jackie, were pictured smiling together at the Scottish FA Cup Final in May while enjoying corporate tickets to the match between Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers.

In August, Laura told The Sun‘s Fabulous Magazine: ‘I’m dating. I’m having fun. No, I don’t have the apps. I’ve tried those in the past three years. I went on Raya and thought: “This is not for me.” I like to meet people organically.’

The TV star also admitted that her fame often strikes up a conversation with her potential suitors.

She said: ‘People do look at me and say: ‘I know you from somewhere…’ and that starts a conversation.’

But the television host was taken aback when one man she went on a date with started asking her for property advice and had to tell him that was not what she was there for.

The blonde beauty did acknowledge that the idea of dating could be tricky because she is always abroad filming.

She then joked that really she should have a ‘man in every country’ before insisting that monogamy is the only thing she would settle for.

Laura said: ‘Really, I should have a man in every country. That would be a more interesting story [laughs].

‘Oh, she’s got one in Ibiza, she’s got one in Ibiza, one on Mallorca. No, that’s not who I am.’

John Higgins admitted killing Amanda McAlear at the flat in Glasgow

A delivery driver who admitted murdering his partner after returning home from a football match has been jailed for 19 years.

John Higgins, 63, attacked Amanda McAlear at her flat in the Barmulloch area of Glasgow on 7 May 2022.

The 50-year-old’s body was found by her son when he visited her home the next day.

Judge Lady Haldane reduced the minimum term of Higgins’ life sentence from 20 years due to his guilty plea.

Lady Haldane told the High Court in Glasgow she had read a number of emotional victim impact statements from Ms McAlear’s family describing how she is “evidently irreplaceable”.

The court previously heard Higgins had attended a match and gone to a pub before getting a taxi to Ms McAlear’s flat.

The exact details of the attack are unknown, but prosecutors stated he grabbed her and repeatedly punched her in the head and body before strangling her.

Amanda McAlear was discovered by her son and pronounced dead at the scene

Ms McAlear’s “badly injured” body was discovered by her son. He called 999 but his mother was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.

Higgins did not make any mention of Ms McAlear being hurt when he visited his sister. Istead, the court heard he said he had a “fight” with Ms McAlear after she unplugged the TV as he was watching it.

He went to a police station the following day with a lawyer and was charged in connection with the killing.

    ‘Deplorable conduct’

The court heard Ms McAlear had a “close and loving relationship with her family,” but her death meant she missed the birth of her youngest grandchild.

During sentencing, Lady Haldane said: “To lose her at all is a tragedy, but to lose her in the manner she did, having murderous violence inflicted upon her by someone who was her partner, is, I am sure, unbearable for them.”

She remarked on the “very limited insight and remorse” Higgins had shown in the compiling of a pre-sentencing report.

The judge continued: “You seemed to have focused more on Miss McAlear’s actions which you suggest, on your account, were provocative rather than the numerous opportunities to pull back from what was a murderous assault.

“You left the property without knowing if Miss McAlear was alive or dead.

“This conduct is deplorable. A direct consequence of this is that her son had the unimaginable experience of discovering his deceased mother.”

Raphael Varane announces his shock retirement from football, aged just 31 – after the former Man United and Real Madrid star suffered a serious knee injury on his Como debut last month

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France star Raphael Varane has  announced his retirement from football.

Varane, 31, has struggled to stay fit in recent years and suffered a serious knee injury just 20 minutes into his debut for Como last month.

Varane was subsequently left out of Como’s Serie A squad given he’s expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time.

As a result, Le Parisien had previously reported that the 31-year-old was considering a shock retirement.

And now, Varane has called time on his glittering career, revealing the decision via a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning.

Alongside a series of photos from his career, Varane wrote in a statement: ‘They say all good things must come to an end.

‘In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.

‘I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.

‘I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates and the supporters of every team I have played for. From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey. The game at the highest level is a thrilling experience. It tests every level of your body and your mind. The emotions we experience you cannot find anywhere else. As athletes, we are never satisfied, never accepting of success. It is our nature and what fuels us.

‘I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it. I hope I have made you all proud.

‘And so, a new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.

‘For now, to the supporters of every club I played for, to my teammates, coaches and staff… from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this journey more special than my wildest dreams could ever foresee.

‘Thank you, football. With love, Rapha.’

Several of Varane’s former team-mates and clubs were quick to pay tribute to the Frenchman, while the France national team also passed on their well-wishes.

Posting on X, they said: ‘Damn dust in the eye. Thanks for the work Raph. We all wish you a good retirement. #ProudtobeBlue.’

The World Cup winner had joined Como  as a free agent over the summer after his contract with Manchester United expired at the end of last season.

He made the move to Italy on a two-year deal – where he linked up with Cesc Fabregas’ side – and joined fellow former Premier League stars Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno in Como’s squad.

But now, Varane has terminated his contract with the Serie A outfit as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

Varane, who came through the youth ranks at Lens, played at the top level for 14 years.

After one season in the first team with the Ligue 1 side, the central defender joined Real Madrid in 2011 aged 18.

He went on to make 360 appearances for the Spanish giants, winning three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey, among several other trophies over a decade.

The Frenchman moved to United in 2021 and displayed his quality despite being hampered by injuries during his three years at Old Trafford, racking up 95 appearances for the Red Devils.

His last game in a United shirt saw him lift the FA Cup as he started the 2-1 victory over Man City at Wembley in May, while he also won the Carabao Cup with the club.

Varane also shone for France in their 2018 World Cup triumph, with the defender racking up 93 caps in total for Les Bleus before he retired from international duty at the age of 29 in February 2023.

Watch: After Sanjeev Kapoor, A Man Slams Air India Food; Finds Insect In Meal

Airline food is under the radar of travellers after numerous reports of substandard in-flight meals surfaced in the recent past. It’s only natural to expect hygienic food on flights that come with the costly airline tickets. And thus, it leads to more disappointment when the expectations are not met. On Monday (February 27, 2023), chef Sanjeev Kapoor complained about his meal on an Air India flight from Nagpur to Mumbai. The same day, another Air India passenger found an insect in his meal and shared a video of it on Twitter.

The passenger, Mahavir Jain, was flying business class in an Air India flight from Mumbai to Chennai. “@airindiain insect in the meal served in business class. Doesn’t look like hygiene was taken. My flight was AI671 -Mumbai to Chennai Seat 2C,” Mahavir Jain wrote in his Twitter post with a video of his meal. The video shows a plate of cornflakes and oats with the side of strawberry compote, yogurt and lemon water. And then a small black insect is seen crawling all over the food!

Air India noticed the post and was quick to reply with: “Dear Mr. Jain, we’re sorry to note your experience while flying with us. This is not something good to hear. We strictly follow measures to ensure hygiene at every step of the process.”

The airline also promised to review and take appropriate action. “Could you please DM your date of travel, and flight details along with the seat number? We’ll highlight this to our catering team for immediate review and action,” Air India added in another tweet.

All these instances of contaminated food on flights and even trains are quite worrisome. Have you encountered such tainted meals on your travels too?
