    Superstar striker Sam Kerr is closing in on a return for Chelsea, almost a year after she tore her anterior cruciate ligament at a training camp in Morocco.

    Kerr, 31, subsequently missed the Paris Olympics following the injury last January – and admitted recently her recovery has been been frustrating at times.

    But if an Instagram story from Chelsea FCW on Tuesday is any guide, it appears the Matildas captain will soon be once again gracing the Blues’ team sheet.

    In the clip, Kerr can be seen joking around with her teammates as they prepared for a team photo shoot in London.

    Kerr is yet to feature in the Women’s Super League this season as she is nursed back to full fitness.

    It comes after Kerr announced on Instagram in November that she and long-time partner Kristie Mewis are expecting a baby in 2025.

    The pair posted a heart-warming set of pictures of themselves while holding up a picture of Mewis’ scans.

    The footballing duo – Mewis plays for West Ham and the USWNT – were all smiles as they celebrated the exciting news with their Instagram followers.

    Kerr’s Matildas team-mate and Manchester City star Mary Fowler was one of the first to comment on the post, writing: ‘Congratulations’ adding a ‘heart-eyes’ emoji.

    Meanwhile, Kerr’s trial on charges of alleged racial aggravated harassment of a police officer will take place in February next year.

    Kerr denies charges of intentionally causing ‘racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress to a police officer’ following a night out in Twickenham, London in January of 2023.

    The trial is scheduled to last four days from February 3.

    It is understood PC Stephen Lovell was called to the scene at Twickenham surrounding a dispute over a taxi fare after the superstar footballer had spent a night out celebrating a FA Cup win over Liverpool – where she scored a hat-trick for Chelsea.

    Kerr also reportedly vomited in the taxi and at the time was arrested and interviewed.

    Her legal team have since argued Kerr was subject to abuse of process after it took a year for her to be charged.

    Kerr will not be obliged to attend the hearing next February in person.

    If convicted, Kerr could face a maximum jail term of two years or be deported from the United Kingdom.

    Samantha Lewis has been following the Matildas since well before they were cool and has dug deep into her notebooks to pull out a close look at their history of clashes with Brazil. The blue touch paper was lit on the rivalry during the Women’s World Cup 2007 when Australia reached the quarter-finals for the first time (spoiler alert: Brazil were runners-up).

    Their first opponents in the knockout stage were Brazil: a team who have since become one of the Matildas’ longest-standing rivals, and who were led, back then, by the great Marta, who would go on to win the tournament’s Golden Boot and MVP awards.

    Australia lost that game 3-2 – not a boilover, by any stretch – with the core of that team going on to become the country’s first Asian Champions just three years later.

Winonah Heatley is very much at the other end of her career and will start after a debut against Germany last month amid a very defensive looking line up.

Clare Polkinghorne will line up for the national side for the 168th time – a record number of caps for an Australian footballer – since making her debut in 2006.

    Hello and welcome to live coverage of the women’s international friendly between the Matildas and Brazil at Suncorp Stadium. This is the beginning of a two-match series between the highly-ranked teams, with the second clash to come on Sunday, as Australia return to Brisbane for the first time since the Women’s World Cup last year.

    The Matildas and Brazil took different paths through the global showcase as the hosts reached the semi-finals and the visitors were knocked out at the group stage, though they have been heading in opposite directions since then. Brazil have risen to No 8 in the Fifa rankings after their silver medal at the Paris Games, while Australia have slumped to No 15 – their lowest ranking since 2007 – in part due to a disappointing Olympic campaign.

    Australia are taking tentative steps towards regeneration since the departure of coach Tony Gustavsson and are likely to field a dash of the old mixed with the new tonight, especially with several stars sitting out. Mary Fowler has joined Cortnee Vine in taking a break from the Matilda’s four-match home series, while captain Sam Kerr is of course still recovering from an ACL injury.

    Football Australia revealed about two hours ago that only 1,000 tickets remain for the friendly at Suncorp Stadium, so if you’re still intending to try your luck at the gate I suggest you run, don’t walk. The likely sell-out will make it the 15th home match in a row where the doors are shut behind the Matildas. A competitive showing, perhaps even a victory, feels increasingly critical to ensuring the sheen remains on the women’s team.

    World Cup hero Cortnee Vine is taking a break from football to focus on her mental health.

    On Friday, Vine was once again a notable absentee in interim coach Tom Sermanni’s extended squad for the Matildas’ upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Taiwan after making herself unavailable for selection.

    The dashing winger was a star of the A-League Women competition but catapulted into the national spotlight when she scored the winning spot-kick in Australia’s marathon penalty shootout win over France in the Cup quarter-final.

    Vine, 26, has missed multiple recent camps for personal reasons, while also attempting to settle into life at NWSL club North Carolina Courage, who she joined from Sydney FC in the off-season.

    ‘I’m sure many people can appreciate that my life has dramatically changed over the past two years,’ Vine said in a statement provided by her management.

    ‘Due to these very new and sometimes overwhelming experiences, l’ve discovered that identifying, managing and prioritising my mental health has become something I have needed to work very hard on.

    ‘Like many who face mental health challenges, I have my good days and my difficult ones, but every day is a lesson in learning to find the right balance.

    ‘For now, I need to focus on taking care of myself, which is why I am taking some time off.

    ‘I truly appreciate everyone’s support and concern, and I’m confident I’ll return stronger than ever.’

    Seven uncapped players and eight with 10 caps or less have been selected in the 36-strong squad for two games against Brazil, in Queensland on November 28 and December 1, and two against Taiwan in Victoria on December 4 and 7.

    The first game, in Brisbane, is retiring veteran Clare Polkinghorne’s celebration match, while Emily van Egmond is due to earn her 150th cap.

    Tottenham winger Hayley Raso is back from a hamstring injury while goalkeeper Teagan Micah returns from an ankle issue. Chloe Logarzo, Emily Gielnik and Alex Chidiac have all been recalled.

    Not all players will assemble for the entire camp.

    Sermanni hopes to field teams with a mixture of established stars and less experienced counterparts.

    ‘There’ll be players playing in the initial two games and then there’ll be some going back, some staying on, and then players coming in for the second two games,’ Sermanni said.

    Sam Kerr won’t be involved as she continues her recovery from an ACL tear.

    ‘Things are getting a little bit better in rehab, but in reality it’s still probably a 12-month injury,’ Sermanni said.

    Kaitlyn Torpey (hamstring) is unavailable.

    Isabel Gomez, Leah Davidson, Natasha Prior and Hana Lowry are among those rewarded with maiden call-ups.

    Melbourne Victory captain Kayla Morrison isn’t included as her eligibility switch from the United States hasn’t gone through, with Football Australia waiting on FIFA.

    Sermanni again stressed he was prepared to be in the interim role for as long as needed as FA’s hunt for a permanent full-time coach continues.

    Sam Kerr didn’t feature in the Matildas’ impressive 2-1 win over Germany as she continues to recover from an ACL injury – but she made her presence felt on Instagram with a cutting remark about the TV coverage of the match.

    Kerr, 31, sarcastically posted on the Matildas official page ‘well done Keira’ after commentator Teo Pellizzeri mispronounced Kyra Cooney-Cross’ name while he was calling the match – and her wonder goal.

    It followed the midfielder’s epic long-range effort in Duisburg, which will be shown on repeat around the world.

    Predictably, many football fans sided with Kerr on social media when it came to Pellizzeri’s unfortunate faux pas.

    ‘Commentator needs to get it right,’ one posted in response.

    Another said: ‘Why am I not surprised.’

    A third weighed in with: ‘How do you mess up the name Kyra.’

    Germany dominated the early stages of the contest, taking the lead in just the fifth minute through Selina Cerci.

    Having been gifted possession by Cerci, Cooney-Cross was quick to spot German goalkeeper Stina Johannes off her line.

    She then unleashed a floating effort from almost 40 metres out that sailed over the back-pedalling custodian and into the back of the net, sparking euphoric celebrations.

    Tottenham defender Clare Hunt then headed home the winner from a pinpoint Steph Catley corner in the 77th minute.

    It completed an impressive comeback from the Matildas, who needed a confidence boost following a disappointing Paris Olympics campaign under former coach Tony Gustavsson.

    The Germans were hoping to celebrate retiring forward Alexandra Popp’s final appearance with a win – but the gritty Matildas spoiled the party.

    However, he believes he has found the love of his life. He was so sure that Matilda was the one that he proposed over the phone, even though they had never met in person.

    Like other stars from Before the 90 Days, they have not met yet, but the couple plans to get married during Niles’ trip to Ghana. Niles believes Matilda is his soulmate, but I am not fully convinced about their situation.

    My biggest concern is how quickly Matilda wants to rush into their wedding plans. They have been connected since Matilda randomly messaged Niles online, which makes their relationship feel rushed.

    Because of his autism, Niles struggled with social situations, was bullied as a child, and often avoided sharing his true thoughts.

    Still, his conversations with Matilda made him feel special, leading to his quick proposal. Matilda was excited and began planning their wedding right away after she accepted.

    Niles felt overwhelmed and anxious about getting married so soon. He was worried because his family did not support the relationship and his decisions.

    Therefore, Niles wanted to take more time to get to know Matilda and save up to give her the wedding of her dreams.

    Niles tried to be honest with Matilda about his feelings. But when he spoke up, she responded with a firm “don’t let me down.”

    This made him rethink his words and wait to talk more in person. I understand Matilda’s excitement about marriage, but I also see Niles’ perspective. If Matilda truly loved Niles, I think she would be more willing to wait for a wedding.

    Another worry is how openly Matilda has talked about her family’s need for money and her wish to live in America, which raises questions about her true motivations. Quick marriages are common in this franchise.

    For example, Tigerlily Taylor and Adnan Abdelfattah got married just after she arrived, mostly due to Adnan’s Muslim faith. However, I question Matilda’s reasons for wanting to rush into marriage.

    In her confessional, Matilda mentioned that her father was a carpenter but has passed away. Because of this, her family lost that income source.

    She helps her mother sell plantains at the market, but they do not earn enough money and are barely getting by. Additionally, she finds Offinso boring and wants to live in a place with fancy clubs and large restaurants.

    While many people on 90 Day Fiancé want to enjoy the benefits of living in America, they usually see these perks as extra bonuses that come with being with the one they love.

    It seems Matilda cares more about her lifestyle and living in a nice place than being truly happy with Niles.

    In the end, I feel Matilda might be taking advantage of Niles. Since Niles has autism and finds it hard to understand social cues, it is possible that he does not realize how Matilda may be manipulating him emotionally. I think Niles was right to postpone the wedding.

    Spending time with Matilda in person will help him better understand their relationship and see if she genuinely cares for him.

    If she truly cared and understood more about his autism, I hope she would be willing to wait patiently. I just hope Niles stays true to his plan and speaks up when he finally meets his Ghanaian queen. 90 Day Fiancé and its spin-offs air on TLC and are available to stream on Max in the U.S.
