Federal judge temporarily blocks Utah social media laws aimed to protect children

A federal judge in Utah has temporarily blocked social media access laws that leaders said were meant to protect the mental health and personal privacy of children, saying they are unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby on Tuesday issued the preliminary injunction against laws that would have required social media companies to verify the ages of their users, disable certain features and limit the use of accounts owned by Utah children.

The laws were set to take effect on Oct. 1, but will be blocked pending the outcome of the case filed by NetChoice, a nonprofit trade association for internet companies such as Google, Meta — the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — Snap and X.

The Utah legislature passed the Utah Minor Protection in Social Media Act to replace laws that were passed in 2023 and were challenged as unconstitutional. State officials believed the 2024 act would hold up in court.

    But Shelby disagreed.

“The court recognizes the State’s earnest desire to protect young people from the novel challenges associated with social media use,” Shelby wrote in his order. However, the state has not articulated a compelling state interest in violating the First Amendment rights of the social media companies, he wrote.

Republican Gov. Spencer Cox said he was disappointed in the court’s decision and was aware it could be a long battle, but said it “is a battle worth waging,” due to the harm that social media is causing children.

“Let’s be clear: social media companies could voluntarily, at this very moment, do everything that the law put in place to protect our children. But they refuse to do so. Instead, they continue to prioritize their profits over our children’s wellbeing. This must stop, and Utah will continue to lead the fight.”

NetChoice argues Utah residents would have to supply additional information to verify their age than social media companies usually collect, putting more information at risk of a data breach.

Several months after Utah became the first state to pass laws regulating children’s social media use in 2023, it sued TikTok and Meta for allegedly luring in children with addictive features.

Under the 2024 Utah laws, default privacy settings for minor accounts would have been required to restrict access to direct messages and sharing features and disable elements such as autoplay and push notifications that lawmakers argue could lead to excessive use.

Parents could obtain access to their children’s accounts and would have grounds to sue a social media company if their child’s mental health worsens from excessive use of an algorithmically curated app. Social media companies must comply with a long list of demands — including a three-hour daily limit and a blackout from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. — to help avoid liability.

The laws sought to shift the burden of proof from the families onto the social media companies, requiring them to demonstrate that their curated content did not fully or partially cause a child’s depression, anxiety or self-harm behaviors. Companies would have to pay at least $10,000 in damages for each case of an adverse mental health outcome.

NetChoice has obtained injunctions temporarily halting similar social media limitation laws in California, Arkansas, Ohio, Mississippi and Texas, the organization said.

“With this now sixth injunction against these overreaching laws, we hope policymakers will focus on meaningful and constitutional solutions for the digital age,” said Chris Marchese, director of litigation for NetChoice.

  • Gatorwine: A Bizarre Drink Trend Making Waves On Social Media

Gatorwine: A Bizarre Drink Trend Making Waves On Social Media

From roasted milk tea to rice paper croissants, various types of unusual recipes have taken social media by storm in the past year. Foodies are often curious to try making these viral creations at home and deciding for themselves if they’re worth the hype. While some experimental recipes attract appreciation, others are slammed for destroying beloved flavours. One of the unique drinks going viral at present is something called “Gatorwine”. As the name suggests, it is a combination of Gatorade and cheap red wine (trends suggest it should cost less than $12 a bottle).

Light blue Gatorade has been called the “ideal” choice for this viral drink. One of the videos featuring Gatorwine that has attracted a lot of attention was shared by YouTuber and cook, Andrew Rea (also known as “Binging with Babish). During a special tasting segment on his YouTube channel, he is seen ranking some of the “strangest recipes” suggested by his followers. One of them is Gatorwine, which is made by mixing equal parts of the two-component liquids.

After taking a sip, he declares, “It’s not like anything I’ve ever tasted, ever. I don’t know what to do about it. Because if I’m being honest, I’d rather drink this than Barefoot or Yellowtail. Does that make me a snob or does that make me cool? I don’t know,” he laughs and adds that he would drink Gatorwine “on the rocks”. He clarifies, “The more I’m drinking it the more I like it.” He also compares it to a Sangria, due to the so-called ‘fruity’ notes of the Gatorade. He says, “I definitely don’t like it as much as Sangria, but I don’t like it any less than that.” He initially ranks it 6/10. He has the drink along with other foods in the episode and later upgrades its ranking to a 7.

The YouTube user @GoatsNowhere, who submitted the Gatorwine idea for the tasting session, commented below, “I am the Gatorwine maker! I have been ridiculed for almost a decade, and I will have this video playing on my gravestone.”

Influenced by the trend, social media users are also making Gatorwine and sharing their thoughts on it. Rea’s reaction to Gatorwine has also grabbed eyeballs on other platforms. His reel on Instagram has clocked over 3 million views so far. Check out some of the reactions from Instagram below:

“Sooooo I made this last night. Is it awful trash…yes. Did I have 3 glasses also yes. It’s like the Gatorade turns the wine back into grape juice, but not good grape juice like artificially flavoured Capri Sun grape juice.”

“Kendall pouring the initial batch with a measuring cup is really offering the Gatorwine a degree of dignity that it does not deserve.”

“I like how technically the flavours of both drinks are only identified by their colours.”

“Enthusiasm for Gatorwine is suspicious behaviour.”

“Sauvignon blanc and cucumber lime Gatorade is the better combo.”

“Try Coca-Cola and wine next, it’s called poor man’s sangria… tried it once not too bad.”

  • NBA Media Vet Chris Broussard Breaks Silence on Fox Sports Shocker as 8-Year-Old Stint Ends

NBA Media Vet Chris Broussard Breaks Silence on Fox Sports Shocker as 8-Year-Old Stint Ends

“Chris Broussard leaving Fox Sports Radio after eight years.” The New York Post published an exclusive on media veteran Chris Broussard about a week ago with this headline. The 55-year-old is leaving his co-host, Rob Parker, and their beloved podcast, The Odd Couple With Chris Broussard & Rob Parker. Needless to say, there was a flurry of frantic messages from fans of the show questioning the truth of the matter. And now, the man in question himself came forward with satisfying answers and much-needed closure.

In the latest episode of their pod, Broussard confirmed the news. He was indeed leaving the show, but not because of any beef with Parker or any of the far-fetched narratives out there. So, what exactly is the reason? Let’s hear it from Broussard himself. “I’m just leaving to focus on television people,” Chris stated, simply.

“I’m one of the co-hosts along with Nick Wright and Kevin Wilds of First Things First on FS1. And I’ve been doing that and the Odd Couple for the past two or three years. It’s a long grind. It’s not undoable, of course, but it’s a long grind. Basically been working from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, so it’s a complete lifestyle move,” Chris further explained on the pod.

The former point guard (Oberlin College, Ohio) just put an end to all the stories circulating around with his detailing. In fact, both Parker and Broussard have been friends for 32 years, and Rob was one of the first people who knew that his close friend and co-host would be leaving the Odd Couple for quite a while. “We were able to keep it quiet, Rob. That’s a testament to us,” Chris pointed out.

But is that all the reason for his move?

Chris Broussard plans to spend more time with wife and “have fun”

As mentioned above, Chris has been completely dedicated to his craft. But now with fewer responsibilities, the popular sports analyst prefers to spend more time with his wife of 29 years, Crystal Naii Collins. “My daughters [Alexis and Noelle] are adults now. They’re out of the house. My wife and I are empty nesters and we just want to have more time to hang out together, Rob, and have fun,” he said, more for the benefit of the viewers.

Aside from that, he also runs a national Christian men’s organization called The K.I.N.G. Movement. It helps men who follow the Christian faith and lifestyle by providing support, accountability, teaching, fellowship, and brotherhood. Chris Broussard mentioned that the extra time will help him spend more time on the org as well as some individual things he has planned.

But Chris Broussard did not forget to give credit to Don Martin, the Executive VP of iHeartRadio, and Scott Shapiro, the senior VP of iHeart and Fox Sports Radio. “They discovered us,” he stated emphatically. After leaving ESPN, Broussard did not have a permanent fixture anywhere. He kept flitting in and out of different shows with multiple hosts. But one fine day, everything changed.

“I had a podcast at the time for FS1 called ‘In The Zone’ and I had you on as a guest. And Don Martin heard it and loved it and was like ‘Why aren’t you two doing radio together?’ He was like, ‘I think you guys would be great on radio!’” And after a test run six years ago, Parker and Broussard became a show.

In fact, they became “the first two African-American men to have a nationally syndicated radio show.”

Broussard’s final appearance on the show will be next Friday, September 13. So, stay tuned! As will we.

Social media users seem to love Logan’s videos and his ‘commitment’ to the cool gourd. In some places, the trend is also being cited as one of the reasons for cucumber shortages.
