Men’s Soccer: Deacons eliminate Cavaliers in ACC semifinals, 5-1 : Jerry Ratcliffe

CARY, N.C. — After a massive result against highly ranked and top-seeded Pitt last Sunday in Pittsburgh, it allowed ninth-seeded Virginia to clinch a chance to play in the ACC Semifinals against fifth-seeded Wake Forest.

The Cavaliers (10-5-4, 3-3-3 ACC) battled tough under the lights at WakeMed Soccerplex on Thursday. A rainy, cold night didn’t stop either team from fighting for the entire 90 minutes, but it just didn’t go the way of the Hoos. Wake (10-4-6, 5-2-2) was able to capitalize on its opportunities early, which forced the Cavaliers to chase for the majority of the match.

The Cavaliers opened the match on the defensive, as Wake controlled most of the possession. The Hoos were looking to win the ball and play a counter attack, similar to the style they implemented at Pitt.

Wake took advantage of this and had the majority of the ball and opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, which they were able to capitalize on.

The Hoos had an early opportunity when Hayes Wood found the ball on the right flank in Wake’s defensive third.

Wood was able to hold up the ball and find Daniel Mangarov in the middle of the field, where he spun two defenders before getting his head up and playing a dangerous ball to the back post towards Parker Sloan. Sloan won the header and deflected the ball in front of the Demon Deacons’ goal before trickling just over the line on the opposite post.

Wake got on the scoring sheet in the 18th minute from a corner kick. The ball was played towards the near post, where Dylan Borso attempted to shoot the ball, but UVA’s Paul Wiese blocked the shot. Unfortunately for him, the ball ricocheted back to Borso, where he played a great ball to the back post to the head of Julien Kennedy. Kennedy was able to head the ball past Virginia keeper Tom Miles.

Minutes later, Wake scored again in the run of play. This time, the ball found the foot of Kennedy inside the box, where he was able to lay the ball back to Basit Umar just inside the box. Umar fired a great one-time shot just under Miles’ crossbar for the Demon Deacons’ second goal of the match.

“There is no doubt 25 minutes into that game where I could see that the three road trips have taken a toll on this team with the three long bus trips,” said UVA head coach George Gelnovatch.

In the second half, the Cavaliers made three substitutions and a formation change in an attempt to change the outcome of this great match. Triton Bouvous and AJ Smith came on as a striker combo, while Joey Batruoni came on in goal as well.

The Cavaliers came out of the locker room pressing Wake forcing a few early mistakes and turnovers. Gashi was able to take a shot very early, but sailed it high. Later, Joey Batrouni made a huge 1v1 save, diving full stretch to his right and denying the best scoring chance of the night while keeping the deficit at only three.

Wake Forest got another goal just eight minutes into the half after back-to-back Demon Deacon corners. The ball was recycled after the second corner and found Joel Torbic on the right flank, who shot and crossed the ball simultaneously that skipped under Batrouni and perfectly into the corner of the goal.

The Hoos got on the score sheet in the 55th minute from a goal from Beauvois. Wiese found the ball on the right side of the field with time and space, took his space and played a great ball into the box to a sliding Beauvois, who managed to direct the ball into the back of the Deacon net.

The Cavaliers were able to gradually build and create more chances with the personnel and formation change. Triton had another near chance where a Wake defender was able to slide in and make the block.

The Deacons had the last real chance from a penalty kick in the 75th minute from an errant UVA tackle. Cooper Flax was able to beat Batrouni for his second goal of the match (both PKs).

“We took the same approach tonight as we did on Sunday against Pitt, and when you take that approach, you want to make sure you don’t get scored on the right,” said Gelnovatch. “Unfortunately, tonight we were leggy. I’m not really sure what else to say.”

Virginia failed to claim another ACC Tournament championship, but the season is far from over, as Gelnovatch effaced post-match. The Hoos have to recover and prepare mentally, as they should be seeded for the NCAA Tournament, which is quickly approaching. The team will await the details during the Selection Show on Monday at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Memphis men’s soccer hosting AAC tournament after midseason turnaround

A year after a record-breaking season, Memphis men’s soccer was stuck in a rut.

Put simply, the Tigers were going backward. They opened the 2024 season 1-4, struggling to replace star striker Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos as they piled up nonconference losses.

“It’s tough,” coach Richard Mulrooney said. “At the end of the day, when you’re 1-4, as much as I want to say, ‘Guys, we’re better than this,’ records don’t lie.”

The problem, defender Logan Longo said, was that Memphis had no identity. After a loss to Mercer, at the lowest point of the season, they finally found it.

“I think it was just hard work and grinding,” Longo said. “We’re not the most technical team. We’re not the best soccer players. But it was just, we kind of built into the mantra of Memphis. It’s the grit and grind city. It’s just kind of buying into that and realizing, if we outwork our opponents, we’re never going to lose. We always have a chance.”

Longo, a Memphis native who played at Briarcrest, spent the first two seasons of his career at Mercer before transferring to his hometown team. He’s part of a group of seniors who helped Mulrooney bring this team out of the rut and turn the season around.

That new identity worked. Memphis started grinding out results, winning its first three AAC games and ultimately using a draw at Florida International to win the AAC regular-season title. That means the Tigers get to host the conference tournament, and they’ll face the Panthers in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“I think that pressure of winning has already been on us,” Mulrooney said. “It’s win or go home. We know that. I think everybody involved in this is in that same boat. But we’ve already been living that life for the last month and a half, so we don’t know any different.”

The Tigers started the season knowing they’d need to craft a new identity after losing dos Santos, who transferred to Marshall. He won AAC offensive player of the year and was named a third-team All-American after scoring 14 goals and netting two more in Memphis’ 2-1 win over SIUE in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

It has been an approach by committee. Though the Tigers are the top seed in the AAC, they don’t have anyone at the top of any major conference statistic. Jackson Kim was named AAC defensive player of the year, however, while Filip Sabatti was named goalkeeper of the year and Lleyton Imparato won co-midfielder of the year.

Memphis has lost only one conference game this season. Don’t get it twisted, though — the No. 1 next to Memphis doesn’t mean it is the favorite to win this tournament. Charlotte, FIU and Florida Atlantic — the other three teams remaining — all have higher RPI numbers than Memphis.

That makes it a simple equation for the Tigers: Win the AAC title, or miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022.

“I love a good win-or-go-home situation,” Longo said. “It’s one of those things where everyone’s going to be fighting for their lives. They’re fighting for their season.”

UWS Men’s, Women’s soccer NCAA tournament opponents revealed
The soccer scene in the UMAC has been dominated by the UWS Yellowjackets, with the men’s team claiming their 8th straight title on Saturday, and the women claiming their 4th straight.

Both teams learned of their NCAA tournament opponents on Monday afternoon. UWS men’s soccer was full of celebration and cheers when they found out their opponent, North Park. North Park was 13-2-5 this season, the Yellowjackets 17-3-2. UWS won’t take no for an answer this year.

“Obviously there are no bad teams and there’s only 64 teams left right now out of, you know, over 400 that start the season, so it’s only down to the best teams and North Park is certainly one of them,” said head coach Joe Mooney. “We’ve seen them in the past at different points and so in some ways it’s kind of similar teams that’ll be facing each other. I think it’ll be a really good first test and obviously we’re going to spend the next week preparing for that.”

“I mean if we want to go win the national championship we got to be able to beat any team, so I mean that’s the way we’re looking at it,” said Jake Kidd, a junior forward. “Just playing who we have to play, focusing on ourselves and trying to get to the next round. Get the first one down.”

UWS men’s soccer takes on North Park on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Olaf.

As for the women’s squad, they too learned their fate today, they’ll take on a Carleton College team that went 14-2-5 to UWS’ 14-7-2, but this group of seniors isn’t scared of anything in what could be their last game together.

“I think it’ll be a tough group to say goodbye to. Like I said, they’ve been committed. They’ve done everything on and off the field that we’ve asked of them. Because of that, the team is super motivated to play for them. At the beginning of the year, I told the team, ‘We have 12 seniors, this is their last opportunity. It’s not about them, but it is for them,’” said Allison DeGroot, head coach of UWS women’s soccer.

“Every time we go out there, it could be our last time on the field, which just ignites something a little more. It’s just been so fun. It’s been such high energy, such high positive energy. Everyone contributes. There’s 34 people on our team and there’s not a single person who isn’t,” said Niya Wilson, a fifth year forward.

A three seed marks the highest ever for the UWS women’s soccer program. They’ll be put to the test on Saturday at 3:30 against Carleton, that game played in Dubuque, Iowa.

KWC Men’s Soccer gets first-ever GMAC Tournament win

PAINESVILLE, OH. (WFIE) – Rarified air for the Kentucky Wesleyan men’s soccer team on Saturday night. The Panthers advanced to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference semifinals with a win over Lake Erie at Jack Britt Stadium. 110 minutes was not enough to break a 1-1 tie as Wesleyan moved-on after a seven-round shootout. Pavel Valchev converted the game-winning PK while Soufian Khaloufi made three saves in the seven rounds of penalty kicks.

Before the dramatics on Saturday night, the Panthers were picked to finish ninth by the G-MAC head coaches back in August. Now the Panthers are among four teams vying for a Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The victory also stands as the program’s first G-MAC Tournament win.

On the unusually narrow pitch, the Strom scored first in the 27th minute. Lake Erie out-shot the Panthers 3-2 in the opening period and held a 1-0 lead at the break. Throughout the second period, the Storm were forced to defend with excruciating effort. The Panthers continued to pressure the Storm net, but no avail.

In the 87th minute, Callum Nolan tied the match after another high-level set piece. After a long throw-in from the far side, the ball bounced through traffic to the near side and to Nolan. Simultaneously, Adrian Stokke and Santiago Henrich were taken down in front of Nolan leaving a path to the Storm goal.

Nolan’s shot was deflected off keeper Jason Lavacca and into the left corner of the net to tie the match. The Panthers outshot the Storm 8-2 in the second half and as the match moved into extra time Wesleyan continued to control the game.

The Panthers were physical and aggressive in both extra periods, outshooting Lake Erie 6-0 in the final 20 minutes. The final shot of overtime was the most dramatic. With 25 seconds left Jacob Boling grabbed the ball for a throw-in as he found Hannes Gronevik. Falling back, Gronevik’s shot hit the post and the ball bounded in front of and away from the Lake Erie goal-line as time expired.

The Storm converted on their first three attempts in the shootout. Calum Newson and Haakon Torvbraaten took the Panthers’ first two attempts and converted. Nolan was next and Lavacca seemed to make a save, but left the goal line too early, allowing Nolan a second chance. Nolan and the Panthers did not waste their opportunity, making good on the kick.

Khaloufi saved the Storm’s fourth shot while Stokke gave the Panthers the edge 4-3. Lake Erie connected on their fifth attempt forcing the Panthers to make their final shot. Henrich’s shot was saved, but Khloufi answered with another save in the sixth round. With another chance to end the match, Boling’s shot was saved as the shootout remained 4-4.

As pressured continued to mount, Khaloufi made yet another save in the seventh round giving Valchev the opportunity to send the Panthers to Tiffin. Lavacca guessed to his left, while Valchev went right to end the match. The Panthers are making their first appearance in the G-MAC semifinals in school history.

The Panthers will play Tiffin in the G-MAC Final Four on Thursday afternoon. The match is scheduled to start at 12:30 PM CT. Prior to the game Findlay will take on Thomas More.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lindenwood men’s soccer (10-5-3, 6-2-2 OVC) blanks Southern Indiana (2-14-2, 1-7-2 OVC) by a final score of 7-0 on senior day at Hunter Stadium. The Lions finish their 2024 regular season with 10 wins, their most since 2017. Their six conference wins are also their most in the Division I era and most since 2021.

“It’s always great when you get so many guys involved especially the seniors,” said head coach Kris Bertsch. “Those guys played a lot of minutes and then we were able to get to our bench and really empty it. The guys kept going and that is great, it is great when they find success.”

After Sunday’s results in the Ohio Valley Conference, Lindenwood will be the #3 seed heading into the OVC Championships next weekend hosted on the campus of SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill. Lindenwood capped off their 2024 regular season with seven goals, their most of the season and second most in the Division I era. The Lions have now scored 37 goals this season, the most by an LU team since 2018.

Bertsch’s squad was all offense on Sunday posting 21 total shots with 13 landing on net. Of the seven goals, Lindenwood had six different scorers and six different players with an assist. Southern Indiana was stifled on offense posting only four shots with none on-goal. Enzo Gil earned his seventh shutout this season marking the most by a Lindenwood goalie in a season since Fermin Hughes in 2012.

The first half saw Lindenwood start the scoring festivities early with a Jermaine Mentoor goal during the 5th minute after a Southern Indiana defender knocked the ball to him off a corner kick. Mentoor, a senior, scored his third goal of the season and is one of nine players to have multiple goals this year.

Now Bijou also scored his third goal of the season during the 35th minute of action. He was assisted by Henrique Perestrelo, both were honored on senior day. The Lions had seven of their 21 shots in the first half.

Lindenwood’s offense ramped up the pace in the second half scoring five goals. John Gates posted his fourth of the season on a penalty kick after being fouled in the box during the 49th minute. Ethan Blake later missed his first penalty kick of the season and is now 3-4 on the year.

Mekhi Wright got in the scoring column for the year with his first goal during the 63rd minute. On the left-side of the box, Anis Smajlovic and Jens Haukeland made two passes that left Wright open for the shot. Snajlovic would then score just over one minute later and was assisted by Blake.

Haukeland was able to score his second goal of the season during the 77th minute and was assisted by Jozef Palushaj. Smajlovic scored his second and final goal of the game during the 89th minute and was assisted by Luke Neely and Palushaj. The Lions have now scored over five goal three times this season with all of them coming inside Hunter Stadium.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Highlighted by junior Quin DeLaMater’s third goal of the season and graduate student Andrew Wike’s two saves, the Boston University men’s soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory at Navy Friday evening.

By extending their unbeaten streak to six games (3-0-3) with just one contest left, the Terriers (4-3-9, 4-1-3 PL) have clinched a top-two seed for the upcoming Patriot League tournament, while the Midshipmen (4-7-4, 3-4-1 PL) remain alive with six other squads in the jam-packed standings for one of the remaining four slots available.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU dominated possession in the first half and attempted nine of the 10 shots with the Midshipmen needing six saves to keep the game scoreless entering the locker room.
- The Terriers seemingly took the lead during a scramble for a loose ball in Navy’s box during the 13th minute with graduate student Aidan Bone ripping a point-blank shot into the back of the net, but unfortunately a teammate drew a foul for inadvertently touching the ball while on the ground before the shot attempt.
- After Navy’s Pierce Holbrook stopped Bone’s next attempt at 16:00, Wike extended his arms up into the air to stop Andrew Schug’s shot from 20 yards out during a counter attack in the 21st minute.
- Junior Diego Rived later forced Holbrook to make diving saves at 32:47 and 34:31, respectively.
- The Terriers only needed 1:46 into the second half to grab the lead, as junior Ryan Lau played a corner kick to the other side of Navy’s box to allow DeLaMater to make a quick strike for the 1-0 advantage.
- The Midshipmen upped their energy facing the one-goal deficit and would attempt nine shots in the second half with Wike making his second save at 65:39.
- In the 72nd minute, Navy drew Wike off his line after receiving a long pass from midfield, but junior John Roman was in position to prevent the Mids from attempting a shot.
- In their last opportunity to get on the scoreboard, Navy drew a free kick from 25 yards out at 89:14 but sailed the ball high over the crossbar.
GAME NOTES
- DeLaMater (3g, 3a) became the first Terrier other than Di Blasio (4g, 1a) to net a game winner for the Terriers this fall. Coincidentally, both men are now tied for the team lead at nine points.
- Lau became the eighth Terrier to earn at least one goal and assist this season.
- Wike earned his fourth shutout of the fall, as the Terriers finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots.
- Both squads had six corners apiece.

In a clash of colors, the Red and Blue prevailed over the Big Green with a 3-2 triumph on senior day. In fitting fashion, it was three seniors who made the difference on the night. No. 20 Penn men’s soccer’s (11-2-1, 5-0 Ivy) win over Dartmouth (5-6-3, 2-2-1 Ivy) protects its perfect record at Rhodes Field during regular season play.

The Red and Blue got off to a quick start with the first goal scored just two minutes into the match when a Penn corner deflected off the Dartmouth defense and found senior forward Stas Korzeniowski. Korzeniowski was able to hook the ball cleanly into the back of the net for his 11th of the season.

“I’m so glad that I was able to put my stamp on the game as early as I did, and that also builds confidence in the group to keep chasing another goal,” Korzeniowski said.

Dartmouth gained some momentum with dangerous positioning in the box in the 8th minute, but were unable to capitalize. Another opportunity for the Big Green arose following a pass between Penn defense that was intercepted, but the shot went wide. After more back and forth and few shots on goal, the silence was broken when a cross reached Penn sophomore Jack-Ryan Jeremiah in the box, but the following shot was parried by Dartmouth goalie Costi Christodoulou.

With 20 minutes remaining in the half, Penn offense picked up speed with a series of threatening possessions in the box. A chaotic few minutes of Quaker control ended with nothing to show for their efforts, when a foul called on Penn senior midfielder Brandon Curran cut the Big Green a break allowing them to clear the ball from further dangerous opportunities for the Quakers.

In response, a dangerous cross found Dartmouth forward Trenton Blake, but Penn sophomore goalie Phillip Falcon III was able to secure the save.

The game slowed down momentarily, with both team’s defensive efforts preventing any threatening opportunities despite the back and forth and physical nature of the game.

Penn’s patience paid off when a yellow card on Dartmouth defender Sebastián Mañón, drawn by Korzeniowski, resulted in a free kick for the Quakers. With just under five in the half, the kick found freshman forward Romeo Dahlen who was able to dish it to senior defender Leo Burney inside the six for a shot that extended the lead for the Red and Blue.

The second half started slow, with possession by both teams but little activity near goal. There was no doubt, however, that Dartmouth was looking to increase intensity and make up their deficit. The first shot of the half came from Penn junior forward Jack Wagoner, missing wide. On the counter, Dartmouth forward Douglas Arveskär got off a shot on goal that Falcon was fortunately able to get a hand on.

The Red and Blue were not as lucky with the next Dartmouth shot though, when Dartmouth forward Vasilis Moiras was able to find the back of the net from far out in the 54th minute. Just ten minutes later, a quick shift to Dartmouth possession and slight breakdown in Penn defense meant Moiras was again able to take advantage yet again, tying the game for the Big Green with a second goal.

With 25 minutes left in the match, the Quakers offensive efforts again were rewarded when a perfectly placed corner found Penn senior midfielder Brandon Curran who was able to finish from the center of the six.

The Big Green attempted to retaliate with another shot from Moiras headed for the top center of the net, but Falcon was able to protect the Quaker lead with another save. Minutes later, Moiras tried again from far left, but the shot went straight to Falcon.

Penn dropped back with under ten minutes left, and the Red and Blue defense was able to hold off the last ditch efforts of the Big Green. In the last three minutes, the Quakers regained control of the ball and were able to comfortably finish the game, defending their undefeated record at home and clinching coach Brian Gill’s 50th career win for the program.

“5-0 [in Ivy Play] is as good as it can get five games in. And we want to host the Ivy League tournament here, so we also want to go and win the regular season,” Korzeniowski said. “Our approach is the same as it has been every game, taking one game at a time, slowly climbing the mountain, and hopefully we find ourselves in the position that we’ve been aspiring to.”

The Quakers have lofty goals and have two more Ivy battles to conquer, with a game at Yale on Saturday next up.

Men’s Ice Hockey: The Huskies shock No. 15 UMass with a win and a tie in their two-game slate

After a tying with No. 15 UMass Amherst in the first game of their weekend series, the UConn men’s ice hockey team battled for a game two victory to edge out the weekend advantage.

The weekend was split between both team’s home venues, with game one being played at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass., while game two took place at Tuscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. Prior to this series, the Huskies had not defeated the Minutemen since January of 2023. UMass boasted a 10-16-3 record over UConn coming into the weekend.

UMass immediately erased the deficit, scoring a goal just 40 seconds into the period. Second-year Jack Musa snagged a UConn pass out of the air, before sliding a pass to third-year Cole O’Hara who buried the Minutemen’s second goal. UMass nearly took the lead in the same period, but due to a goalie interference, it was overturned. UConn ended the second on top when third-year forward Tristan Frasier had his shot deflected, before third-year Ryan Tattle shoveled the rebound past the goalie to take a 3-2 lead.

In a grueling third period, the Huskies kept the Minutemen at bay as neither team was able to gain an offensive advantage. UMass pulled their goalie in a last-ditch effort, and as the clock wound down, second-year Ayden Suniev tied the game and forced overtime.

The overtime period was reminiscent of period three, a back-and-forth affair where neither team could establish an upper hand. The overtime was highlighted by a diving save by third-year goalie Tyler Muszelik to keep both teams locked in a stalemate, resulting in a 3-3 final score.

As the clock struck zero, the Hockey East standings advantage would be decided in a sudden death shootout. In the eighth round, fourth-year Lucas Mercuri converted on his attempt to award the Minutemen the extra point towards the conference standings.

On Saturday, UConn once again took the first lead in the contest. The Huskies sent out their penalty kill unit to repel the UMass power play. Third-year Jake Percival managed to sneak away with the puck, getting a one-on-one chance with the keeper where he knocked in the shorthanded goal with 12 seconds left on the power play clock. Muszelik kept the Huskies on top, making a staggering 11 saves in the first period.

The Huskies continued their dominance into the second period. As the Huskies controlled the puck in the offensive zone for over a minute, Percival was able to net his second goal of the game, stuffing the shot past the goalie to give UConn a 2-0 advantage. As the period continued, UConn scored their third unanswered goal with less than five minutes to play in the second. Second-year Joey Muldowney flicked a pass backwards to Richard, who ripped the puck to the far side of the goal, where Muldowney was able to tap in his first goal of the weekend. UMass finally managed to get on the board at the end of the period, as fifth-year Linden Alger scored after a faceoff win, to make the game 3-1 going into the final period.

UConn’s penalty kill unit was put to work in the third period as the Huskies committed three penalties. With five minutes to go in the game, the Minutemen capitalized on their man advantage, bringing the game within one as Musa scored on an assist from second-year Dans Locmelis. UConn’s defensive line was able to hold off UMass for the remainder of the game, to secure the 3-2 upset victory.

The Minutemen narrowly outshot the Huskies 29-28, but a stellar performance by Muszelik in goal helped UConn hold on to their lead. The New Hampshire transfer made 27 saves in the game to propel UConn to the win.

UConn will defend its home ice next weekend as they welcome The University of Vermont to both the XL Center and Tuscano Family Ice Forum in a two-game set, the puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Lions are looking to get back in the win column, after dropping their last three games. In all four games played this season, the Lions have capitalized first, and are looking to use that as an advantage over the RedHawks.

This will be the first time in program history the Lions will take on Miami of Ohio.

Miami was picked to finish ninth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). The RedHawks currently sit 2-2-2 on the season. The RedHawks two wins on the year came from a series sweep over Alaska Anchorage. In their last two games played, the Redhawks dropped a pair of games to Robert Morris, falling to the Colonials, 5-1 and 4-1. Colby Ambrosio leads the RedHawks in points with seven (2g and 5a). The Redhawks have six individuals tied for the most goals on the team with two. Bruno Bruveris has played in five of the six games in net for the Redhawks, making 124 stops on 13 goals against for a save percentage of .905.
