Revealed: The shock name BBC insiders think is on Match of the Day list to replace Gary Lineker – MIKE KEEGAN’S INSIDE SPORT

Potential changes to Match of the Day, along with the race to replace Gary Lineker, remain the talk of the BBC.

Insiders believe that one move being considered is to introduce a segment to the highlights show of news from behind the scenes, which would see a journalist brought in to give some off-the-field detail.

The appearance of Roman Kemp on Radio 5 Live, on which he recently hosted the 606 phone-in with Robbie Savage, has also set tongues wagging.

With Chris Sutton covering Celtic’s late clash at Hearts, the 31-year-old stepped in to co-host. Kemp, son of Spandau Ballet star Martin, performed well after a nervous start and is known to have admirers in high places.

Whether the BBC’s new director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski would give him Lineker’s shoes to fill, however, remains to be seen.

    Padel’s at the wheel

While the eyes of the Formula One world were on the track for this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix, many of the drivers had already taken part in a keenly contested competition elsewhere.

The padel court at Doha’s Waldorf Astoria threw its doors open to drivers and sports figures from across the world in the days building up to the big race.

Insiders say British pair George Russell and Lando Norris were among those to catch the eye while Novak Djokovic took on Premier Padel (and Paris Saint-Germain) chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

    Wales to tackle the FA

The attempt by Welsh clubs playing in the English league to qualify for Europe by entering the Welsh League Cup will now go before the full FA Board, rather than just a sub-committee.

In what would appear to be a blow for those wanting to ‘have their Welsh cake and eat it’, as one English exec quipped, EFL clubs have been told that the decision has been made ‘due to the importance and significance of the topic’.

Clubs have also been assured that they will be given the opportunity to respond as part of the consultation process.

    Ignorance is Faes

Not all of Leicester City’s footballers were out partying while manager Steve Cooper was getting sacked. A group including Conor Coady and Harry Winks were spotted in a Copenhagen nightclub, close to a sign which read ‘Enzo I Miss U’, which many interpreted as a dig at Enzo Maresca’s replacement, hours after the defeat by Chelsea which saw Cooper punted despite his side not being in the relegation zone.

However, with the squad not expected back in until Tuesday, centre-back Wout Faes was spotted in the more tranquil surroundings of Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire. Indeed, as club bosses were harshly deciding that Cooper was out of his depth, Faes was relaxing in the spa’s swimming pool.

    The Gretsy Lights

Christmas lights of a different variety have arrived at Crewe Alexandra courtesy of Cheshire Police, rather than Santa Claus.

Officers arrived at Gresty Road last week armed with LED grow lights, which they had seized following a raid at a cannabis factory.

With the League Two side’s pitch having suffered in previous winters, the donations were well-received by club staff, with one insider claiming they now had their own version of the Northern Lights.

  • Mike Tyson v Jake Paul is the apex event of content masquerading as sport | Boxing

Mark Borkowski is the public relations maestro who has worked with everyone from Mikhail Gorbachev to Diego Maradona to Jim Rose, an American exhibitionist who used to hang weights from his penis. Borkowski also helped Ian Botham recreate Hannibal’s walk across the Alps with elephants, and, for his sins, was the mastermind behind Cliff Richard’s Saviour’s Day reaching Christmas No 1, despite minimal radio play. So who better to talk about the biggest sporting stunt of the year, Mike Tyson’s fight against Jake Paul, which will be streamed into 300m homes via Netflix this weekend?

Instinctively, as I told Borkowksi, I hate the idea. Most boxing fans do. It sells a myth that wasn’t even close to being a reality in 2004, let alone 2024: namely that Tyson is one of the most ferocious warriors alive, not a 58-year-old who lost 26lb in May after an ulcer flare-up that left him throwing up blood and defecating tar. It risks Tyson’s boxing reputation and his health. And, Netflix’s lavish promotion aside, it feels more like a sham or a circus than a genuine sporting event.

But I may be wrong. Certainly Borkowksi thinks so. He believes the fight is straight out of the playbook of PT Barnum, the greatest showman of all and a curator of the absurd and extraordinary, who instinctively knew what the public wanted long before they did. And that it will cut through to the masses.

“Barnum understood how to engage the crowd – the great herd, the great unwashed,” he says. “This fight is about opportunism. It’s about creative thinking. And it is already generating the oxygen of publicity, which is always an indication that something is going to be very successful.”

As Borkowski points outsays, the fightit taps into two big markets: Boomers and Gen Xers, who grew up watching Tyson, as well as the younger generations who worship Jake Paul, many of whom will want to watch.

“A lot of people, particularly boys, project themselves into male influencers like Paul,” he says. “In some ways, they are their best mates – whether it’s watching them play Call of Duty, or seeing the Jackass-influenced generation of pranksters doing outrageous things on social. So they will be watching this. And so will those who grew up with Tyson in his prime. So while purists might sneer, there’s a market for this. And Netflix knows it.”

But it’s not entirely sport, is it? Borkowksi doesn’t demur. But he is not sure that it matters, as long as the fight – in the early hours of Saturday, UK time – delivers in some way. “The root of this fight is absolutely that of World Wrestling Entertainment,” he says. “It’s a fusion of sport and entertainment. You feel that part of it is staged. Will anybody get seriously hurt? I doubt it, given they are wearing 14-ounce gloves. So it is more WWE than WBA.”

He then delivers the ultimate endorsement. “I’d be only too pleased to come up with something like this,” he says.

Borkowksi isn’t alone in believing Netflix is on to a winner. Adam Kelly, the president of media of the global sports rights agency IMG, feels much the same way. And, having worked closely with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Al Haymon to help promote and stage Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor in 2017, he sees Tyson versus Paul as having similar crossover appeal.

Kelly’s starting point is that in a world where TV ratings are falling, sport is absolutely bucking the trend with record ratings for the NFL, Olympics, the Euros and the Women’s NBA. So naturally the media and tech giants such as Netflix and Amazon are starting to focus more on live sport, using it to drive subscriptions and sell products. And given their business acumen, would you dare bet against them?

“This fight is much bigger than boxing,” he says. “This is the road, and the road map, that’s going to prove the model for Netflix when it comes to sport.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Kelly predicts that Tyson vs Paul “will be one of the biggest fights there’s ever been broadcast”. Why? Because of a combination of Netflix’s huge subscriber base, the ability of its algorithm to nudge people towards new content, and the intrigue surrounding the fight.

And he has a message for purists, who turned their noses up at Mayweather against McGregor and continue to roll their eyes at influencers such as Paul in their sport. “These fights have encouraged new fans, and led to a fresh wave of interest in boxing,” he insists. “If boxing only appeals to a hardcore fan base, with technical fights, eventually it will die. Because its audiences will age, and then they’ll die.”

It is a warning that applies to all sports. “You have to be constantly looking to build your audience,” says Kelly. “And that means making a product that specifically appeals to people who are not your current fans. Unless you’re doing that, you’re on a shrinking iceberg.”

I don’t disagree. But I still flinch when I hear Netflix promoting the fight in Arlington, Texas, as the “biggest name in social media against the biggest name in boxing”, or when I see Muhammad Ali’s former manager Gene Kilroy tell Tyson recently: “This is the strongest I have ever seen you.” This is not just brazen hype. It is deluded nonsense.

It brings to mind that old adage, often misattributed to Barnum, of there being a sucker being born every minute. Barnum is also claimed to have once said: “Every crowd has a silver lining.” Which, when it comes to this uneasy spectacle, seems somewhat apposite.

  • What to stream: Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul, ‘Bad Sisters,’ Shawn Mendes and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

What to stream: Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul, ‘Bad Sisters,’ Shawn Mendes and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starring in “Deadpool & Wolverine” and James Patterson’s psychologist detective Alex Cross finally having his own thriller TV show are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: A new album from Shawn Mendes, the return of Apple TV+ dark comedy “Bad Sisters” and a new generation of storm chasers feature in “Twisters.”

    — Anyone looking for an escape will find plenty of options on streaming. Some of the summer’s biggest blockbusters will soon be in your living room, starting with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” ready to spice up Disney+ starting Tuesday. Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy went full throttle with the characters’ first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with in-jokes, celebrity cameos and f-bombs galore. In her review for the Associated Press, Krysta Fauria wrote that it’s a “fun, generally well-made summer movie.”

    — If you prefer your spectacles to be (sort of) more reality-based, “Twisters” storms Peacock on Friday, Nov. 15. The stand-alone follow-up to the 1996 movie “Twister” stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos as a new generation of storm chasers making dangerous decisions in Oklahoma’s Tornado Alley. Like so many great disaster movies before it, it’s very silly and extremely watchable.

    — One of the most crowd-pleasing movies of the year is also coming home: “Thelma,” in which 94-year-old June Squibb plays a Los Angeles grandmother who gets scammed out of $10,000 and goes on a mission to get it back, with the late Richard Roundtree and his motorized scooter as her accomplice. It’s streaming on Hulu starting Friday, Nov. 15.

    — Awards season watchers will also get a chance to dive into the fantastical world of Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” when it hits Netflix on Wednesday. A film that defies simple explanation, AP Film Writer Jake Coyle wrote around its Cannes debut that this “gonzo trans Mexican drug lord musical” is “probably the first movie that can sincerely be compared to both ‘Sicario’ and ‘Mrs. Doubtfire.’” It stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and breakout Karla Sofía Gascón.

    AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr

    — In a Michael Jackson -based timeline, there’s a love story being told in “I’ll Be There.” Set in the backdrop of Jackson’s 2009 death in Los Angeles, the independent film starring Jasmine Batchelor follows the youngest of a blended family, who reconnects with her estranged siblings after her older brother is diagnosed with cancer. The reconnection unveils family secrets and cultural moments that impacts their lives. The emotional drama streams Friday, Nov. 15 on Prime Video and Apple TV.

AP Entertainment Writer Jonathan Landrum Jr.

    — Four years between albums is an eternity for Shawn Mendes, the Canadian folk-pop star who first emerged on the long-defunct social media platform Vine, miraculously — through talent and resilience — transforming six-seconds of fame into a viable career. On “Shawn,” his self-titled album four years removed from 2020’s introspective “Wonder,” Mendes is seeking to reintroduce himself with guitar-forward, John Mayer-esq. singles like “Why Why Why” and “Nobody Knows.” “Shawn” releases Friday, Nov. 15.

    — Also on Friday, Nov. 15, the Florida rapper Denzel Curry will release “King of the Mischievous South,” the album version of his popular mixtapes — released in 2012 and “Vol. 2” in 2024 — of the same name. The tracklist has been reimagined, and it now features five new songs, including the braggadocious single “Still in the Paint,” featuring Bktherula and Lazer Dim 700. That one uses a sample of Lex Luger’s beat for Waka Flocka Flame’s “Hard In The Paint,” naturally.

    — As country music continues to dominate the culture zeitgeist, so too do its stars endeavor to learn more about the genre that made them. In the Hulu original docuseries “It’s All Country,” Luke Bryan aims to get at the heart of country’s stars and songs, sitting down with Wynonna Judd, Mickey Guyton, Kane Brown, Sheryl Crow, Luke Combs and Lady A for some moving conversations. It hits the streaming giant on Friday, Nov. 15.

    — AP Music Writer Maria Sherman

    — There’s another dead body and a suitcase of killer secrets in a new series of Apple TV+ dark comedy “Bad Sisters.” Showrunner Sharon Horgan again writes and stars alongside Sarah Greene, Eve Hewson, Eva Birtwhistle and Anne-Marie Duff as the Garvey sisters continue to deal with the fall out of season one. It returns Wednesday.

James Patterson’s psychologist detective Alex Cross finally has his own thriller TV show. In “Cross,” coming to Prime Video, Aldis Hodge stars as the charismatic and clever cop as he negotiates personal tragedy and brutal killings in Washington D.C. — helped by his bromance with fellow policeman John Sampson, played by Isaiah Mustafa. It premieres Thursday.

    By Hilary Fox

    — Mike Tyson squares up against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a live fight happening Friday, Nov. 15 and streaming live on Netflix. “Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson” was postponed in May after Tyson became nauseous and dizzy on a flight from Los Angeles in May. His representatives said it was due to an ulcer. Tyson, who is regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever, is now 58 years old and Paul is 27.

    — “Yellowstone” may be airing its final episodes, but Taylor Sheridan has a new series debuting Sunday, Nov. 17 on Paramount+ called “Landman.” It’s based on the popular podcast “Boomtown” and described as an “Upstairs Downstairs” story about the world of oil rigs. It stars Billy Bob Thornton as a crisis manager for an oil company. Ali Larter, Jon Hamm and Demi Moore also have roles.

    — The Case of the Golden Idol, a devious collection of mysteries inspired by 1990s adventure games, was one of the most delightful surprises of 2022. Its creator — Latvian studio Color Gray Games — has returned with a sequel, The Rise of the Golden Idol, that looks every bit as charmingly morbid. The time frame has moved from the 18th century to the 1970s, but the titular idol, which may or may not have supernatural powers, is still creating havoc. Publisher Playstack promises a slicker interface to solve its word and logic puzzles, and says we can look forward to 20 new crimes in an “age of hallucinogens, fax machines, parapsychology and TV guides.” The investigation resumes Tuesday on PC, PlayStation 5/4, Xbox X/S/One, Switch and mobile via Netflix.

Wigan Athletic evidence hints Mike Williamson may have turned Carlisle United tide

Mike Williamson hasn’t lit the house on fire since coming to Carlisle United, but a recent kind gesture after Charlie Wyke’s horror injury certainly helped to curry favour with the club’s supporters.

The pre-season expectations for the Blues have been all but thrown out the window. With Paul Simpson at the helm – a manager that has won promotion from League Two more times than he hasn’t – and a seemingly strong summer window, all the noise coming from Brunton Park was about getting back to the English third tier as quickly as possible.

Even after Simpson’s sacking four games into the season, chairman Tom Piatak still said that promotion was what Carlisle were aiming for. Now, though, being second bottom of the league after 14 games, eight of which Mike Williamson has been in charge of, the attitude towards finishing in the top spots has changed.

One of the reasons why there was so much hope for the season to come was because of the acquisition of players like Wyke. The striker’s record at the level above was a strong one, and his pre-existing relationship with the club made it feel like the perfect fit.

Unfortunately, against Cheltenham Town, when he suffered a catastrophic injury, he felt like the signs were pointing towards something else.

    Charlie Wyke’s horror injury

Shortly after coming on against Michael Flynn’s side, Wyke was challenged from behind by Luke Young. The tackle, while not malicious, fractured his left fibula and ruptured: “all the ligaments and tendons,” as he put it to Wigan Today.

Nearly three years on from a cardiac arrest while playing for Wigan Athletic that came close to ending his life, Wyke is now facing another major setback. He has had surgery on his ankle, but it is a long road back for someone that has had too much of their career taken from them already.

    Collage Maker-11-Oct-2023-06-37-PM-2616

He has had a tremendous amount of support in the aftermath of the injury, but the actions of his current boss really rang true with the Carlisle faithful.

Mike Williamson’s kind action after Charlie Wyke injury

The forward revealed to Wigan Today that, after the Cheltenham game had finished, United’s head coach came and sat with Wyke for hours.

“I know I need to stay positive, and I’ve had some good conversations with the gaffer (Mike Williamson)…to be fair, he came with me to the hospital, and he sat with me for eight hours, which was unbelievable of him.”

Williamson hasn’t hit it off right away at Brunton Park. Whether it’s his more relaxed, understated demeanour, or his tactics, or the fact that he’s following on from a legend of the club, there just hasn’t been that connection between him and many supporters.

At the start of that Cheltenham game, the Carlisle section of the crowd was so anxious and ready to jump on his and the players’ backs from minute one. They certainly gave the crowd reasons to not be happy, but it wasn’t a pleasant atmosphere at all.

Some supporters were calling for him to be sacked after the game, but, when Wyke’s quotes came out, even those who didn’t agree with him still keeping his job held their hands up and said ‘You know what, that was a lovely, honourable thing to do.’

FA and Rangers links should excite Carlisle United as key January transfer window looms for new figure

Carlisle ended their search for a new sporting director last week when they announced the appointment of Rob Clarkson.

The next game, against Wigan in the FA Cup – a game that Wyke had been so looking forward to before his injury – the crowd were much more supportive of Williamson and his players.

Now, was the head coach’s kindness towards his number 10 the main reason for the positive reaction that Carlisle got from the home supporters? Not entirely. The pressure was off them because of the higher calibre of opposition that they were playing against, plus the early sending off of Ethan Robson really got those in attendance riled up.

Even if the improved mood in Brunton Park against the Latics had nothing at all to do with Williamson’s lengthy support of Wyke in his time of need, what he did showed the quality of the person in charge at Brunton Park, and it seems to have warmed him up to some that weren’t so sure about him.

Who Is Mike Weir’s Wife? Meet ‘The Bachelor’ Michelle Money Fame & Explore Her Lifestyle, Career & More

Being a captain, and that too of the International team, is not a small thing. For it comes with its own pressures and tensions. All of that, however, takes a backseat when it is time to lead the squad, especially at a big event such as the Presidents Cup. But, as Mike Weir takes care of his team, who is there to support him? Cue his wife, Michelle Money of ‘The Bachelor’ fame.

The two met by chance back in 2016, following which they started to date. Fast forward seven years to 2023, and the two announced their engagement to the world when the golfer was 53 years old and Money was 43. Interestingly, the athlete had proposed to the star in January of that year when the two of them had gone on a trip to New Zealand.

“We took a helicopter to the top of a glacier where the most incredible glacier lake was,” recounted Michelle Money in an interview with People, “He got down on a knee and asked me to marry him there on the glacier. It was incredible.” And heartwarmingly enough, the couple then tied the knot just 10 months later in November 2023.

Coming back to Mike Weir’s wife, she is popularly known for being a contestant in the 15th season of the hit show, ‘The Bachelor’, back in 2011. It was then that she dated Brad Womack before parting ways with him later on. Soon after, the star also made her appearances on the second season of  ‘Bachelor Pad’ and the first season of ‘Bachelor in Paradise’.

Interestingly enough, the relationship she currently has with Weir is not her first. For she was formerly married to Ryan Money from Salt Lake City, with whom she shares a daughter named Brielle. The couple, however, separated soon after following which she connected with Cody Sattler during the first season of ‘Bachelor in Paradise’. The two couldn’t manage to make their relationship work, causing it to end in 2016.

How did Mike Weir meet Michelle Money?

“I was walking into a restaurant with my daughter, and he happened to be walking out with a group of friends,” divulged Money. “I didn’t see him, but apparently he saw me and asked his friends if any of them knew me.” What happened then? Well, the Canadian athlete, after reaching his friend’s house, left it soon after to drive back to the restaurant in a bid to find her. Unfortunately, she had already left.

But luck was with the current Presidents Cup International team’s skipper. His friends happened to know a mutual friend who gave him Money’s number. “We went on our first date and never looked back,” recalled the star from ‘The Bachelor’. Soon after, she revealed her relationship status in an interview with Us Weekly in 2016. “Cody and I are not together. I am in a new relationship with a wonderful man and am extremely happy!” It has been 8 years since then. And those years were filled with them being there for each other, be it on or off the course.

The couple were spotted alongside each other with the wife’s daughter, Brielle, carrying the bags for the professional golfer at the par-3 contest ahead of the 2024 Masters at Augusta National. “What an amazing week at @themasters,” wrote the star on her Instagram post, “So fun watching @briellemoney caddy for @mweirsy in the Par 3 tournament! She even hit a ball on 9!”

That’s not all. She even went ahead to express her gratitude for the amount of support that everyone showcased for their family. “Special thank you to all our friends and family who help make this week absolutely unforgettable,” added Mike Weir’s wife. “And extra proud of my husband @mweirsy who never stops working on his game. He is the ultimate example of perseverance, commitment and hard work!”

Quite a wonderful story the two share with each other. And considering the fact that they are going strong 8 years into the relationship, come 2024, the fans of the two stars will surely be happy for the golfer and his partner.

  • Gundy’s 20th: Ranking Oklahoma State football’s 20 seasons under Mike Gundy | Football

Gundy’s 20th: Ranking Oklahoma State football’s 20 seasons under Mike Gundy | Football

Editor’s note: This is a story from “Gundy’s 20th,” The O’Colly’s weekly series to commemorate OSU football head coach Mike Gundy’s 20th season as the leading man. This week, we rank Gundy’s 20 seasons at OSU.

In Mike Gundy’s 19 complete seasons as Oklahoma State’s head coach, he’s made a bowl game the last 18 seasons.

His winning percentage is 68.1% through three weeks of his 20th season.

There have been a handful of great Cowboy football seasons under Gundy, so this week’s “Gundy’s 20th” story includes a top-20 ranking of the Cowboys’ seasons under Gundy.

    No. 1: 2011 (12-1, Fiesta Bowl champion)

It’s the chalk answer, yes, but it’s the right one — the 2011 OSU football season is not only the best under Gundy but the best in program history. Home wins against No. 10 OU (Gundy’s first Bedlam win) and No. 17 Kansas State and road wins against No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 22 Texas highlighted the Cowboys’ season. A loss to Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, is the one blemish on this season, and if it weren’t for that, OSU could’ve competed for a national title. Instead, it defeated No. 4 Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl and claimed Gundy’s only Big 12 title.

    No. 2: 2021 (12-2, Fiesta Bowl champion)

There’s a real argument to be made that this season could be above 2011. Wins against No. 10 OU, No. 21 Baylor, No. 25 Texas and No. 25 Kansas State outweigh the Cowboys’ lone regular season loss (once again) at Iowa State. This was the Cowboys’ first Big 12 Championship Game appearance, and they came up 6 inches short of winning the game. But OSU defeated No. 5 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl 37-35 and completed the largest comeback in school history.

    No. 3: 2013 (10-3, Cotton Bowl appearance)

Three ranked wins — including one against No. 3 Baylor with College GameDay in Stillwater — and a Cotton Bowl appearance highlight this season, which was the third 10-win season in four years for Gundy and Co.

    No. 4: 2010 (11-2, Alamo Bowl champion)

Despite the extra win, 2013 edges out the 2010 season because of ranked wins (three in 2013 to one), which means more than an unranked bowl win. Still, the Cowboys defeated Baylor and won a well-respected bowl game against Arizona.

    No. 5: 2023 (10-4, Texas Bowl champion)

This is the weirdest season to rank. Losses to South Alabama and Iowa State keep last year’s squad from being any higher, but wins against No. 9 OU (in the final Bedlam, of course) and No. 23 Kansas and a Big 12 Championship Game appearance elevate the 2023 Cowboys’ season.

    No. 6: 2008 (9-4, Holiday Bowl appearance)

Another difficult season to rank. The 2008 OSU season was highlighted by wins against No. 3 Missouri (on the road) and Texas A&M. The Cowboys were ranked as high as No. 7, but losses to No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Texas Tech, No. 3 OU and ultimately No. 15 Oregon in the Holiday Bowl pulled their ranking down.

    No. 7: 2009 (9-4, Cotton Bowl appearance)

Yet another difficult season to rank. Opening the season with a win against No. 13 Georgia was a statement, and so was beating Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. But losses to No. 3 Texas, OU and Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl lowered the ceiling of this season.

    No. 8: 2016 (10-3, Alamo Bowl champion)

The Cowboys went 3-2 against ranked teams this season, with wins coming against No. 10 West Virginia and No. 22 Texas in the regular season and No. 10 Colorado in the Alamo Bowl.

No. 9: 2017 (10-3, Camping World Bowl champion)

OSU lost both its home-ranked games this season — No. 5 OU and No. 16 TCU — but defeated No. 21 Iowa State and No. 22 West Virginia on the road before beating No. 22 Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl.

    No. 10: 2015 (10-3, Sugar Bowl appearance)

After climbing from unranked to No. 8 after starting the season 10-0, OSU lost to No. 10 Baylor and No. 3 OU in Stillwater before losing to No. 12 Ole Miss to finish the season 10-3.

    No. 11: 2018 (7-6, Liberty Bowl appearance)

The Cowboys went 4-1 against ranked teams — including wins against No. 5 Texas and No. 7 West Virginia — but five losses to unranked Big 12 teams pulled their ranking down.

    No. 12: 2020 (8-3, Cheez-It Bowl champion)

Wins against No. 14 Miami (in the Cheez-It Bowl) and No. 17 Iowa State help the 2020 team, of which two of its three losses came to ranked opponents.

No. 13: 2012 (8-5, Heart of Dallas Bowl champion)

OSU was unranked for most of this season, and lost every game it played against a ranked opponent other than No. 23 Texas Tech. A Heart of Dallas Bowl win against Purdue helps, though (back when bowl games used to matter).

    No. 14: 2019 (8-5, Texas Bowl appearance)

The 2019 Cowboys were unranked or hung around the last five spots of the top 25, as their 2-3 record against other ranked teams often shifted their ranking one way or the other.

    No. 15: 2006 (7-6, Independence Bowl champion)

Beating No. 20 Nebraska in Stillwater and Alabama (unranked or not, it’s the Crimson Tide) in the Independence Bowl were statement wins early in Gundy’s tenure.

No. 16: 2022 (7-6, Guaranteed Rate Bowl appearance)

After starting out 5-1 — with ranked wins against No. 16 Baylor and No. 20 Texas — the Cowboys lost five of their last six to finish 7-6. Because of injuries and other reasons, it’s considered one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory.

    No. 17: 2014 (7-6, Cactus Bowl champion)

Other than Bedlam — largely courtesy of Tyreek Hill’s punt return — the Cowboys lost every big game this season: No. 1 Florida State, No. 5 Baylor, No. 11 Kansas State, No. 12 TCU and No. 22 West Virginia. For OSU, though, one Bedlam win meant more than winning most of those games.

    No. 18: 2007 (7-6, Insight Bowl champion)

OSU defeated No. 25 Kansas State in its Homecoming game but couldn’t win any of its other four ranked games. An Insight Bowl appearance against Indiana did increase Gundy’s bowl streak (and winning streak in those games) to two.

    No. 19: 2005 (4-7)

Considering Gundy’s 18 straight bowl game seasons, naturally, the only season that OSU didn’t reach one under him is at the bottom of this list. Even in Gundy’s first season, though, the Cowboys were knocking off ranked teams — like No. 13 Texas Tech.

    No. 20/TBD: 2024

This season is TBD, but Gundy’s bowl streak living on is the expectation, and so is competing for the Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Carl Froch concerned about Mike Tyson’s lifestyle ahead of controversial Jake Paul fight

Carl Froch has raised fears about Mike Tyson’s lifestyle ahead of the 58-year-old’s fight with Jake Paul later this year.

The two men are poised to do battle in Texas on November 15, despite the huge 31-year age gap between the two men.

Tyson has been working hard in the gym as he prepares for the clash, with the boxing icon showing he still possesses the power of old.

Many figures within the sport fear the worst, however, with Paul winning 10 of his 11 boxing bouts so far.

Froch, speaking to GiveMeSport, has now admitted he’s concerned about how much cannabis Tyson likes to smoke.

The heavyweight legend is a huge advocate for weed and the health benefits involved with the substance.

Froch, however, believes it could have a negative impact on Tyson as he prepares for his first fight since his draw with Roy Jones Jr back in 2020.

“He smokes a lot of weed, doesn’t he?” said the Briton.

“He’s still burning weed. It’s combustion, the way he inhales it, it’s not good for you.”

There have been accusations that the fight will be scripted, despite both Tyson and Paul insisting that isn’t the case.

Froch isn’t convinced – and believes Tyson shoving Paul at a recent press conference is proof that a game will be ‘played’.

He stated: “Is it out of the question or is it ridiculous to think that Mike Tyson might think ‘I’ll get paid an extra few quid and put a bit of a show on?’

“He’s not going to have more than a round or two in him. So just play the game. Mike Tyson is going to play the game.

“You saw him playing the game at the press conference. He did that half-hearted shove when he was laughing and jumping around the stage all giddy.

“He kind of doesn’t know how to play the part. He’s trying, but it just looked like a load of c**p to me.”

Froch also expressed a belief that Tyson is well past his best.

His boxing career ended with two defeats, with his last loss against Kevin McBride in 2005.

And Froch thinks Tyson is simply too old to be fighting at his age – especially given how Paul is only 27.

“I don’t think it should be happening because Mike Tyson’s an old man,” he said.

“With utmost respect, he’s 58. I’m too old to box and I’m 47. He’s 58. And Mike Tyson was well past his best in his early 40s.

  • Gundy’s 20th: The 20 best OSU football players under Mike Gundy | Football

Gundy’s 20th: The 20 best OSU football players under Mike Gundy | Football

Editor’s note: This is a story from “Gundy’s 20th,” The O’Colly’s weekly series to commemorate OSU football head coach Mike Gundy’s 20th season as the leading man. This week, we look at the 20 best players under Gundy.

Legends such as Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, Hart Lee Dykes and so on played before Mike Gundy took over as Oklahoma State’s head coach.

But that doesn’t mean Gundy hasn’t produced some studs since he took the job in 2004.

This week’s “Gundy’s 20th” story includes a top 20 list of the best players under Gundy.

No. 1: Justin Blackmon, wide receiver, 2008-11

After being redshirted in 2008, Blackmon played 13 games the following year before breaking out in 2010 and becoming the nation’s best wideout. Blackmon won two straight Fred Biletnikoff Awards in ‘10 and 2011 and totaled 3,304 receiving yards and 38 receiving touchdowns those two seasons. He was the top target for not only the program’s best team in ‘11, but was undoubtedly the best receiver in the country.

No. 2: Brandon Weeden, quarterback, 2007-11

Listen, I don’t really want to put Blackmon and Weeden atop this list; it seems too easy. But Weeden made it easy, as his 2010 season (4277 passing yards and 34 passing touchdowns) and 2011 season (4727 passing yards and 37 passing touchdowns) are all-timers in Cowboy football history. OSU’s best receiver and quarterback as the top two? Sometimes the easy route is good.

No. 3: Russell Okung, offensive lineman, 2006-09

Okung started 47 games for OSU before the Seattle Seahawks selected him with the sixth pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was a two-time All-American (a unanimous one in 2009) and held down the Cowboys’ tackle positions across four seasons.

No. 4: Mason Rudolph, quarterback, 2014-17

A three-year starter for the Cowboys, Rudolph is atop the lists of many OSU records, including but not limited to: competitions (No. 1), passing yards (No. 1), passing touchdowns (No. 1) and completion percentage (No. 2).

No. 5: James Washington, wide receiver, 2014-17

Funnily enough, Rudolph’s top target comes in right after him. Washington, a Fred Biletnikoff Award winner in 2017, too found himself atop OSU’s record books, as he had career totals of 4,472 receiving yards, 226 receptions and 39 receiving touchdowns.

No. 6: Malcolm Rodriguez, linebacker, 2017-21

The best defensive player under Gundy is Rodriguez, who was the backbone of that great 2021 Cowboy defense. Rodriguez’s 409 career tackles are the most under a Gundy defender, and he finished his career off as the MVP of the 2022 Fiesta Bowl.

No. 7: Kendall Hunter, running back, 2006-10

Hunter is fourth all-time in career rushing and all-purpose yards for OSU, but if not for an injury in 2009, he may be No. 1 in both those statistics. Hunter was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist, a two-time All-American, and, despite being already a Cowboy great, is somewhat of a “what if” too.

No. 8: Tylan Wallace, wide receiver, 2017-20

Wallace is another great Cowboy receiver who, in his first season as a starter, was a Fred Biletnikoff Award finalist and an All-American. He finished fifth in OSU career receiving yards (3,434), sixth in receptions (205) and touchdowns (26).

No. 9: Dez Bryant, wide receiver, 2007-09

Yup, another receiver. In two full seasons — his 2009 season was limited to three games because of a suspension — Bryant was a consensus All-American (2008) with career numbers of 2,425 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns. His dominance for a short tenure in Stillwater was undeniable.

No. 10: Chuba Hubbard, running back, 2017-20

In 2019, after posting 2,292 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns, Hubbard was a Doak Walker Award finalist, eighth in Heisman voting and an All-American. He’s seventh all-time in OSU career all-purpose yards (4,490) and second in all-purpose yards per game (136.1).

No. 11: Ollie Gordon II, running back, 2022-present

Gordon has already won the Doak Walker Award, which is more than the two running backs above him, but his career numbers are to be determined. What’s certain is that Gordon is a wrecking ball of a runner who’s a fan favorite, and he might end up several sports higher on this list when he’s done in Stillwater.

No. 12: Justin Gilbert, cornerback, 2010-13

A consensus All-American in 2013, Gilbert was a Jim Thorpe Award finalist and set a Big 12 Conference record with six kickoff return touchdowns that year. He finished with 182 tackles, eight interceptions and 11 kickoff return touchdowns for his career before the Cleveland Browns drafted him with the eighth pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

No. 13: Zac Robinson, quarterback, 2005-09

Robinson is third in OSU’s total offensive career yards mark with 10,175, as the Cowboy quarterback in the mid-late 2000s was one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the sport.

No. 14: Brennan Presley, wide receiver, 2020-present

Like Gordon, Presley’s college career isn’t finished, and he might only climb this list before this season ends. Presley’s 16 receptions two games into this season have him only 53 catches away from breaking Rashuan Woods’ OSU career receptions record.

No. 15: Emmanuel Ogbah, defensive end, 2012-15

After redshirting as a true freshman and starting 13 games his sophomore year, Ogbah totaled 113 tackles and 24 sacks in his junior and senior seasons.

No. 16: Lane Taylor, offensive lineman 2009-12

Like Okung, Taylor made 47 starts on the Cowboy offensive line and was the star offensive guard on a couple of OSU teams with the best offenses of all time.

No. 17: Nick Martin, linebacker, 2021-present

Martin rounds out the trio of Gordon and Presley of current players who made the list. Martin’s fly-around-the-field play and tackling ability (he’s totaled 166 tackles from last season to two weeks into this season) are mostly unmatched in Gundy’s era.

No. 18: Brandon Pettigrew, tight end, 2005-08

Pettigrew was an All-Big 12 tight end who finished his career with 112 catches for 1,450 yards and nine touchdowns. His play and leadership at OSU propelled him to the 20th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Detroit Lions.

No. 19: Quinn Sharp, kicker, 2008-12

Most say Dan Bailey is OSU’s best kicker, and while he won the Lou Gorza Award and Sharp didn’t, I believe that Sharp’s the best. In the first two years Sharp saw the field, he served as OSU’s punter before becoming a full-time kicker. In his last two seasons, he went 72-for-72 on extra points and 50-for-59 on field goals.

No. 20: Brock Martin, defensive end, 2018-22

Although Rodriguez was the backbone of the great ‘21 Cowboy defense, Martin was his right-hand man. Martin finished tied for the fourth-most tackles for lost and third in quarterback hurries in OSU career marks.

  • Is Mike Norvell Leaving FSU Football? Fans’ Outrage Puts His $10 Million Job Security in Jeopardy

Is Mike Norvell Leaving FSU Football? Fans’ Outrage Puts His $10 Million Job Security in Jeopardy

Who would’ve thought the No. 10 ranked FSU would suffer a miserable start to the 2024 season?! The Seminoles are one of ESPN’s top four teams expected to reach the College Football Playoffs but the expectations crashed with them already losing two games in a row. Things aren’t looking bright for Florida State HC Matt Rhule who signed a double-digit million dollar contract extension with the program earlier this February.

In Week 0, FSU lost to Georgia Tech 24-21 before another upset loss against unranked Boston College falling 28-13. Needless to say, many people are pointing fingers at Mike Norvell’s incompetence, some even hinting at his looming dismissal.

FSU’s poor performance led fans into believing that Mike Norvell’s job is in jeopardy as one person on X wrote, “College football coaching is so ruthless. Norvell was the GOAT for 18 games and now there is a whole Spaces about how he needs to be fired two/three games later.” Indeed, Norvell led the Seminoles to a 13-1 record last season. He even won the ACC Coach of the Year award. So, it’s no wonder that the team extended his contract in February which spiked his salary from $5.5 million to $9.875 this season. But he doesn’t seem to be playing to the worth of his salary.

After the “sickening” season opener against Georgia Tech in Dublin, Norvell took accountability for his team’s loss. He said, “It’s sickening that we came up short and I take total responsibility and ownership for that. It’s my job to have the team prepared to go and play to the best of our ability. I don’t believe that was our best.” Still, the September 2 game didn’t see improvements, rather it saw FSU slacking even further.

FSU loses two games in a row under Mike Norvell

After losing their last game against Boston College, Mike Norvell appeared devastated at the team’s result. In his postgame speech, he said, “I’m sick of his this season started. Tonight, I failed in preparing the team to go out and respond.” Could it be perhaps that the Seminoles lost their star players like Jordan Travis, Keon Coleman, Jared Verse, and Braden Fiske?

Still, this 0-2 start is earning Mike Norvell all the wrong sorts of attention. What lies in store for him is a mystery but as of now, he’s still believing in his team with all his heart. He said, “You’ve got a football team that nobody envisioned ever being where we are and having disappointment, having failure, but I do believe in what this team can accomplish.” An epic comeback against Memphis on September 14 could ease the pressure on Norvell but another loss could really leave him in the trench.
