  • What to know about Apple’s $95 million settlement of the snooping Siri case

What to know about Apple’s $95 million settlement of the snooping Siri case

Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit that accused the company of turning its virtual assistant Siri into a snoop that eavesdropped on the users of iPhones and other trendy devices in a betrayal to its long-standing commitment to personal privacy.

The proposed settlement filed in federal court earlier this week still needs to be approved by a judge, but here are a few things to know about the case and the privacy issues that it raised.

    WHAT WAS THE LAWSUIT ABOUT?

The Wood Law Firm, which specializes in class-action lawsuits, filed the complaint against Apple in August 2019, shortly after The Guardian newspaper published an article alleging that Siri’s microphone had been surreptitiously turned on to record conversations occurring without the users’ knowledge.

Apple issued a September 2014 software update that was supposed to activate the virtual assistant only with the triggering words “Hey, Siri,” but The Guardian story alleged Siri was listening and recording conversations at other times to help improve the company’s technology.

The story led to the lawsuit, which later raised allegations that Apple shared some of the conversations that Siri secretly recorded with advertisers looking to connect with consumers who were more likely to buy their products and services.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COVERED BY THE SETTLEMENT?

Tens of millions of U.S consumers who owned or purchased iPhones and other devices equipped with Siri from September 17, 2014, through the end of last year will be eligible to file claims.

HOW MUCH MONEY WILL EACH ELIGIBLE CONSUMER RECEIVE?

It’s far too early to tell for certain, but the settlement currently envisions paying out up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, with each consumer limited to a maximum. The final amount could be affected by two factors: the number of claims and how much of the settlement fund is reduced to cover legal fees and costs.

A claims administrator estimates only 3% to 5% of eligible consumers will file claims. The lawyers in the case currently are seeking nearly $30 million in fees and expenses, but that figure could still be lowered by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, who is overseeing the case in Oakland, California. A proposed Feb. 14 court hearing has been proposed to review the settlement terms.

    DID APPLE BREAK ANY LAWS?

If the allegations were true, Apple may have violated federal wiretapping laws and other statutes designed to protect people’s privacy. But Apple adamantly denied any wrongdoing and maintained that it would have been cleared of any misconduct had the case gone to trial. Lawyers representing the consumers asserted that Apple’s misbehavior was so egregious that the company could have been liable for $1.5 billion in damages if it lost the case.

Although Apple hasn’t explained the reasons for making the settlement, major companies often decide it makes more sense to resolve class-action cases rather than to continue to run up legal costs and risk the chance of potentially bad publicity. The lawsuit also targeted one of Apple’s core values framing privacy as a “fundamental human right.”

Although $95 million sounds like a lot of money, it’s a pittance for Apple. Since September 2014, the company’s total profits have exceeded $700 billion — a streak of prosperity that has helped propel the company’s market value to about $3.7 trillion.

DO I NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT THE MICROPHONES ON OTHER DEVICES SPYING ON ME?

Perhaps. A case similar to the one filed against Siri is still active in a San Jose, California, federal court against Google and the virtual assistant in its Android software, which has been widely used in smartphones for years.

JUST IN CASE, HOW DO I DISABLE SIRI?

You can turn Apple’s virtual assistant off by following these simple steps:

    1. Navigate to Settings Siri & Search.

    2. Toggle off Listen for ‘Hey Siri’ and press the Side button for Siri.

    3. Tap Turn Off Siri when a pop-up window appears.

You can also disable individual apps’ access to your iPhone’s mic by doing the following: Navigate to Settings (select the app) then toggle off Microphone.

  • Indias Organic Food Export Growth Rises To $448 Million, Surpassing Last Years Total

Indias Organic Food Export Growth Rises To $448 Million, Surpassing Last Years Total

India’s organic food products export reached $447.73 million in the first eight months of this fiscal (FY25), and are set to surpass last year’s export figures, the Parliament was informed on Monday. In the current financial year, the total amount of organic food product exports reached 263,050 metric tonnes (MT) till November 25 and the export of organic food products stood at $494.80 million last fiscal (FY24), Union Minister of Food Processing Industries, Navneet Singh Bittu, told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. The ministry has not allocated any specific funds to incentivise the industries for producing organic products.
However, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, provides financial assistance to its member exporters, including exporters of organic food products, he added. Further, the APEDA is implementing the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). The programme involves the accreditation of Certification Bodies, standards for organic production, promotion of organic farming and marketing, etc.
The total number of organic-certified processing units under the National Programme for Organic Production in India is 1,016. In September, the APEDA announced a partnership with global retail chain LuLu Group International (LLC) to showcase a wide range of certified Indian organic products in its stores across the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The APEDA will facilitate connections between the organic growers in India, including Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), Cooperatives and the LuLu Group. This will ensure that Indian organic products reach a wider global audience.
The authority is dedicated to promoting Indian agro and processed food exports. The agency works towards organising B2B exhibitions in different countries, exploring new potential markets, and working closely with the Indian Embassies to promote natural, organic, and Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged agro-products, the minister told the house.

  • Muddy footprints suggest 2 species of early humans were neighbors in Kenya 1.5 million years ago

Muddy footprints suggest 2 species of early humans were neighbors in Kenya 1.5 million years ago

WASHINGTON — Muddy footprints left on a Kenyan lakeside suggest two of our early human ancestors were nearby neighbors some 1.5 million years ago.

The footprints were left in the mud by two different species “within a matter of hours, or at most days,” said paleontologist Louise Leakey, co-author of the research published Thursday in the journal Science.

Scientists previously knew from fossil remains that these two extinct branches of the human evolutionary tree – called Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei – lived about the same time in the Turkana Basin.

But dating fossils is not exact. “It’s plus or minus a few thousand years,” said paleontologist William Harcourt-Smith of Lehman College and the American Museum of Natural History in New York, who was not involved in the study.

Yet with fossil footprints, “there’s an actual moment in time preserved,” he said. “It’s an amazing discovery.”

The tracks of fossil footprints were uncovered in 2021 in what is today Koobi Fora, Kenya, said Leaky, who is based at New York’s Stony Brook University.

Whether the two individuals passed by the eastern side of Lake Turkana at the same time – or a day or two apart – they likely knew of each other’s existence, said study co-author Kevin Hatala, a paleoanthropologist at Chatham University in Pittsburgh.

“They probably saw each other, probably knew each other was there and probably influenced each other in some way,” he said.

Scientists were able to distinguish between the two species because of the shape of the footprints, which holds clues to the anatomy of the foot and how it’s being used.

    H. erectus appeared to be walking similar to how modern humans walk – striking the ground heel first, then rolling weight over the ball of the foot and toes and pushing off again.

The other species, which was also walking upright, was moving “in a different way from anything else we’ve seen before, anywhere else,” said co-author Erin Marie Williams-Hatala, a human evolutionary anatomist at Chatham.

Among other details, the footprints suggest more mobility in their big toe, compared to H. erectus or modern humans, said Hatala.

Our common primate ancestors probably had hands and feet adapted for grasping branches, but over time the feet of human ancestors evolved to enable walking upright, researchers say.

The new study adds to a growing body of research that implies this transformation to bipedalism – walking on two feet — didn’t happen at a single moment, in a single way.

Rather, there may have been a variety of ways that early humans learned to walk, run, stumble and slide on prehistoric muddy slopes.

“It turns out, there are different gait mechanics – different ways of being bipedal,” said Harcourt-Smith.

Louisiana Athletics receives $1.5 million gift from James D. Moncus Family Foundation – Crescent City Sports

    Tigue Moore Field

Support will help fund Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium and the baseball clubhouse project.

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Department of Athletics has received a $1.5 million gift from the James D. Moncus Family Foundation which will provide support for the continued renovation of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium and the baseball clubhouse project at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park, it was announced Wednesday.

In recognition of the transformational gift, the premium entryway on the West side of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium will be named the Jim & Ruth Moncus Premium Entry.

“We are extremely grateful and very appreciative of this generous gift from the Moncus family,” Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Bryan Maggard said. “This investment in Louisiana Athletics will play a key role in our continued efforts to transform our facilities which will enhance the experiences for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.”

A native of Houston, Jim Moncus entered the oil and gas industry following service in the United States Marine Corps. He came to Lafayette in 1962, after his first oil and gas job in Casper, Wyoming, ended suddenly. Moncus worked for Lamb Oil for over a decade; in 1974, he founded Devin International, an oilfield equipment company. Moncus held patents for dozens of oilfield tools and procedures – many still being used today – during an almost 50-year career in the industry.

After selling the company in 2008, Jim and Ruth Moncus shifted their focus to continuing their decades-long commitment to philanthropy, creating the James Devin Moncus Family Foundation and investing in local and regional non-profits.

The Moncus Foundation locally invested millions to establish a new city park, further the arts and education, and ensure the very best of health care for the citizens of Lafayette Parish.

Among their many contributions to the University, the Moncus family has established scholarships and endowed professorships. Their longstanding support of the University resonates in many corners of campus, including arts, nursing, sciences and athletics.

“Jim was an avid and enthusiastic supporter of UL Athletics. He enjoyed attending all sporting events and was a loyal Ragin’ Cajuns fan,” said Debbie Spallino of the James D. Moncus Family Foundation. “The Moncus Foundation is very proud to be a part of this exciting time at the University and honored to continue Jim’s legacy of giving back to the community he loved so much.”

The University posthumously honored Mr. Moncus with an honorary Doctor of Nursing practice degree in December 2021, shortly after his death at age 81. His wife, Ruth, a nurse for 35 years, accepted on his behalf. Ruth Moncus has continued her late husband’s philanthropic work through the Moncus Family Foundation; she was a driving force behind the $7 million gift to UL Lafayette from the James Devin Moncus Family Foundation that will enable the Health Sciences Campus’ continued growth and fund an endowment to support the College of Nursing & Health Sciences.

The $1.5 million gift from the Moncus Family Foundation to Athletics is part of the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in the University’s history.

Announced in November of 2021, Together: The Campaign for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette aims to raise $500 million. Among the campaign’s priorities: the renovation and maintenance of training and competition spaces for Ragin’ Cajuns student-athletes.

Athletics projects completed as part of the Together Campaign include Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium, Russo Park, the renovation of E.K. Long Gym, the Donald and Janice Mosing SAPC Auditorium, and the Golf Indoor Teaching Facility at Oakbourne Country Club.

The renovated west tower of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium will offer premium suites, a luxurious club level, loge boxes, and club seats, providing Ragin’ Cajuns fans new opportunities to engage with the football program and the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Foundation (RCAF).

Premium suites will include both indoor and outdoor seating, access to a climate-controlled club area, premium catering, and suite attendants. Loge boxes will feature private outdoor seating and premium parking access, while club seats will offer comfortable outdoor seating with armrests and beverage holders. Both loge box and club seat patrons will enjoy access to the exclusive McElligott Club and its amenities.

The upgrades to Russo Park will significantly enhance the facility’s functionality and appeal, featuring a state-of-the-art clubhouse designed to meet the needs of players and staff. The baseball clubhouse will provide a comfortable and efficient space for team operations and newly renovated coaches’ offices.

The renovations will introduce dedicated indoor hitting and pitching areas in the left field corner, allowing athletes to train year-round regardless of weather conditions. These upgrades are set to elevate the overall experience for the team and coaching staff, positioning Russo Park as a top-tier facility on the national level.

Indias Fish Production Doubles To 17.5 Million Tons In A Decade: Fisheries Minister

India’s annual fish production has nearly doubled since 2014 to 17.5 million tons, with inland fishing now surpassing marine fishing, contributing 13.2 million tons, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh said on Thursday.

In his address here to celebrate World Fisheries Day 2024, the minister said that India has now become the second-largest fish producer globally, with around 30 million people involved in fish production across the value chain. The country accounts for as much as 8 per cent of the world’s total fish production, he added.

He said that various initiatives by the fisheries department like the Blue Revolution, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PMMKSY) have resulted in boosting fish production in the country.

The Minister also congratulated the fishermen and fish farmers for their role in achieving the target.

Singh launched a series of landmark initiatives and projects aimed at transforming the fisheries sector and strengthening India’s blue economy. These included the launch of the 5th Marine Fisheries Census for data-driven policymaking, the National Plan of Action on Sharks for sustainable shark management and India’s endorsement of the Regional Plan of Action on IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) Fishing to prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the Bay of Bengal Region jointly in cooperation with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives, the International Maritime Organisation-Food and Agricultural Organisation (IMO-FAO) GloLitter Partnership Project to combat marine plastic litter, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for retrofitted LPG kits to promote energy-efficient, low-cost marine fishing fuels.

Additionally, the New Single Window System (NSWS) by the Coastal Aquaculture Authority was launched to enable online registration of coastal aquaculture farms. A signed MoU was also exchanged to implement a framework for the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), harnessing carbon-sequestering practices in the sector.

The Union Minister also highlighted issues like plastic pollution, carbon emissions from traditional fishing and water pollution, emphasising the government’s efforts to reduce plastics, improve water quality and promote eco-friendly practices.

Singh mentioned the unorganised nature of the sector and the infrastructural gaps, stressing the need for reforms and initiatives like the Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF). He outlined a vision for sustainable development and economically empowering the fisheries sector, focusing on modern techniques, policy integration and long-term goals to ensure India’s global leadership in fish production.

Speaking on the occasion, Manuel Barange, ADG and Director Fisheries Division FAO, Rome, emphasised the global challenges of hunger and malnutrition, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to feed a growing population. FAO’s Blue Transformation Initiative was presented during the event, focusing on sustainable aquaculture development, effective fisheries management, and enhancing aquatic food value chains.

    Multi-Crore Apartment in Los Angeles

AR Rahman’s success in Hollywood, alongside his numerous accolades, prompted him to invest in a luxurious apartment in Los Angeles. As reported by The Times of India, Rahman made this purchase in 2010 to not only serve as a home but also as a studio where he could compose music without the need to travel frequently. This sprawling property, which is likely worth several crores, is one of the few owned by an Indian composer in Los Angeles, a testament to his global stature and influence in the music industry.

    Palatial Bungalow in Chennai

Back in his hometown of Chennai, AR Rahman owns a lavish bungalow in Kodambakkam, a prime residential area. Purchased in 2005 for an undisclosed amount, this grand residence is where Rahman spends most of his time when not traveling for work. The bungalow boasts a spacious interior with multiple bedrooms, a large dining area, a family room furnished with leather loungers, and a dedicated music studio. It also includes an entertainment space where the Rahman family spends quality time. This home is a symbol of his successful career and love for music.

    Studios Across the World

Apart from his personal properties, AR Rahman owns a host of music studios both in India and internationally. His first studio, Panchathan Record Inn, which was established in his backyard in Chennai, has become one of the most famous music studios in the country. Rahman also owns AM Studios, another state-of-the-art facility located nearby. His international portfolio includes the renowned Firdaus Studio in Dubai and KM Musiq Studios in London. The most notable of his acquisitions is Abbey Road Studios, located in London, a historic landmark for music production and home to numerous iconic recordings.

    A Fleet of Expensive Cars

AR Rahman’s love for luxury extends to his choice of cars. Known to have a penchant for high-end automobiles, Rahman’s garage is home to several expensive vehicles. Among them is a Mercedes-Benz, which is reportedly worth nearly Rs 3 crore, and a Jaguar, valued at more than Rs 1 crore, according to The Indian Express. His daughters, Khatija and Rahima, share in his love for luxurious vehicles as well, having purchased a Porsche Taycan EV in 2022, priced around Rs 3 crore.

    Enormous Fees for His Work

AR Rahman is not just known for his musical genius but also for the hefty fees he charges for his work. According to sources such as Hindustan Times and Mint, Rahman charges a staggering Rs 3 crore per song. This exceptional fee is believed to be a strategy to limit the number of producers and musicians who approach him, as he prefers to focus on his own compositions rather than working on multiple projects at once.

In addition to his song fees, Rahman reportedly charges Rs 1 to 2 crore for a one-hour live performance, a rate that reflects his immense popularity and high demand for live shows, as per sources like CAKnowledge and Lifestyle Asia.

Net Worth: A Staggering Rs 1,728 Crore

AR Rahman’s wealth is the result of his extensive music career, high-paying gigs, and brand endorsements. With his impressive song fees, lucrative live performances, and numerous real estate holdings, Rahman’s net worth has reached an astounding Rs 1,728 crore, according to reports by Mint, Jagran, and DNA. His wealth also includes significant investments in businesses, real estate, and other ventures, solidifying his status as one of the wealthiest musicians in the world.

Bluesky has added 1 million users since the US election as people seek alternatives to X

LOS ANGELES — Social media site Bluesky has gained 1 million new users in the week since the U.S. election, as some X users look for an alternative platform to post their thoughts and engage with others online.

Bluesky said Wednesday that its total users surged to 15 million, up from roughly 13 million at the end of October.

Championed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky was an invitation-only space until it opened to the public in February. That invite-only period gave the site time to build out moderation tools and other features. The platform resembles Elon Musk’s X, with a “discover” feed as well a chronological feed for accounts that users follow. Users can send direct messages and pin posts, as well as find “starter packs” that provide a curated list of people and custom feeds to follow.

The post-election uptick in users isn’t the first time that Bluesky has benefitted from people leaving X. Bluesky gained 2.6 million users in the week after X was banned in Brazil in August — 85% of them from Brazil, the company said. About 500,000 new users signed up in the span of one day last month, when X signaled that blocked accounts would be able to see a user’s public posts.

Despite Bluesky’s growth, X posted last week that it had “dominated the global conversation on the U.S. election” and had set new records. The platform saw a 15.5% jump in new-user signups on Election Day, X said, with a record 942 million posts worldwide. Representatives for Bluesky and for X did not respond to requests for comment.

Bluesky has referenced its competitive relationship to X through tongue-in-cheeks comments, including an Election Day post on X referencing Musk watching voting results come in with President-elect Donald Trump.

“I can guarantee that no Bluesky team members will be sitting with a presidential candidate tonight and giving them direct access to control what you see online,” Bluesky said.

Across the platform, new users — among of them journalists, left-leaning politicians and celebrities — have posted memes and shared that they were looking forward to using a space free from advertisements and hate speech. Some said it reminded them of the early days of X, when it was still Twitter.

On Wednesday, The Guardian said it would no longer post on X, citing “far right conspiracy theories and racism” on the site as a reason.

Last year, advertisers such as IBM, NBCUniversal and its parent company Comcast fled X over concerns about their ads showing up next to pro-Nazi content and hate speech on the site in general, with Musk inflaming tensions with his own posts endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory.
