    Man Providing Free Nimbu Paani For Runners In South Mumbai Wins Hearts – Heres His Story

    A man from Peddar Road in Mumbai has been quietly keeping many runners hydrated with homemade nimbu paani for over a decade now. His efforts were recently lauded on social media when Tata Mumbai Marathon shared a video about him. The reel has since gone viral and received a lot of attention online. At the beginning of the video is a clip by another vlogger, Piyush Gadda, who introduces us to a “mystery man” helping other runners in South Mumbai. He explains that this person keeps free nimbu paani for all runners at a spot on Peddar Road. Piyush doesn’t know who this man is and asks people to share his name in the comments in case they do. He mentions that the drink is very refreshing and that it seems to eliminate one’s fatigue.

    The organizers of the Tata Mumbai Marathon managed to track down this person, who is now being hailed “Peddar Road Ka Nimbu Pani Hero.” His name is Rajesh Shah. In the video, he himself shares the story of how he began this simple yet much-appreciated initiative for fellow runners. Rajesh begins by clarifying that it’s not just his efforts that are behind this venture but those of other people too. He explains that he stays at Peddar Road and realised that it’s a good midway point on the marathon route (which starts from Nariman Point) to keep water for himself. He later began keeping a few nimbu paani bottles for his runner friends as well.

    He credits other people in the video for helping him since the project’s inception many years ago. One of them, Sanjay, makes the lemon water from scratch at home. The drink is transferred to bottles, which are refrigerated before being taken outside for the runners. He and Rajesh coordinate regarding the number of bottles to be kept, to ensure that people don’t miss out. Rajesh also reveals that in recent times he goes to keep bottles specially for early runners around 5.15 am, despite not being ready for his run. He feels responsible for providing this refreshment as he feels runners have come to expect its availability.

    How do we introduce the phenomenon that is Izumi? It is well-known as one of Bandra’s buzziest hotspots, one of Mumbai’s most sought-after reservations and one of India’s leading Japanese restaurants. But is the attractive halo created by such descriptions just smoke and mirrors? We are happy to report it’s more of a light that exudes warmth through simply delicious food. We had the chance to dine at Izumi Bandra on its reopening night following a three-month hiatus. It was our first visit to this famous spot and we got to try the revamped menu.

    After the restaurant closed its doors, Chef Nooresha Kably travelled along with a team of 12 enthusiasts to three cities in Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. The new dishes are inspired by their discoveries during the trip. Izumi’s menu as a whole does not try to tell a story – but some of the individual dishes are narratives in themselves. Chef Nooresha recalls, “After our train journey with views of the Sea of Japan to Otaru, we visited Sankaku Market, where we sampled some of the freshest seafood that Japan has to offer, like king crab, uni (sea urchin), scallops, and the sweetest shrimp. In Otaru, we were introduced to Kaisen-Don by a local fisherman. Those beautiful seaside flavours stayed with us, and we couldn’t wait to bring them back to India.”

    We started our meal with Ohitashi Tomato and Crispy Tofu Salad, a vibrant combination that also included lotus root, cucumber and white onion. Drizzled with a light yuzu dressing, it set the stage for the more indulgent treats to come. We also liked the refreshing Avocado Tartare enhanced with habanero oil. The smoothness of corn cream, the crispiness of the sweet potato strands and the bite of the tartare came together quite well. From the hot non-veg small plates section, we tasted the Kushi Katsu ( a deep-fried cutlet-like dish on a skewer). We chose the Cinnamon Pork Korokke with balsamic and honey reduction, which had scrumptious layers of sweetness, heat and (a hint of) spice. This was followed by Izumi’s classic Pork Gyoza and we fought amongst ourselves for the last bite of it! The meat with almond chilli oil was encased in perfectly soft wrappers like little pockets of heaven.

    Izumi’s drinks menu has 18 new cocktails, many of which are inspired by Chef Nooresha’s last trip where she visited different bars across Japan. Highlights include The Zen & Zest (rum/gin, yuzu, honey, ginger, fresh basil), Uji Twilight (Sencha-infused Japanese whisky, peanut butter bourbon, Amaretto, sweet vermouth, Amaro) and Tokyo Bloom (sake, gin, cherry blossom, kaffir lime). A special mention also for the mocktails here – we thoroughly relished Yuzual Suspect (a bubbly concoction with yuzu puree and kaffir lime) and Sinner Man (orange juice spiked with cinnamon syrup).

    Izumi’s sushi selections have remained the same, except for the addition of the Open Rolls. Chef explains that these rolls are designed to be individually consumed: “If you must, you may bite into one end of the open roll and share it with someone.” The fillings were stacked inside a semi-folded sheet of crisp seaweed with a layer of rice at the bottom and reminded us of tacos in a way. We highly recommend both the veg Shimeji with Crispy Almond (with lettuce, carrot and ginger cream) and the non-veg Shime Saba (marinated mackerel and miso cream). We enjoyed the subtly sharp taste of the pickled fish – derived from the vinegar it’s marinated in. There are also cool new options for the Robata grill. While meat may seem like an obvious choice, don’t overlook the vegetarian possibilities. Case in point: the gloriously juicy and smoky Dashi Red Bell Pepper with Maple Butter.

    Izumi’s ramen boasts legions of passionate followers, so we were not exactly surprised by how good it was. However, we managed to discover new dimensions of appreciation as we tasted the Tokyo Chicken Chintan Ramen. The wholesomely light broth with flavours of shoyu and thyme, the slurp-worthy noodles and the double bite delight of chicken charsu and chicken liver pate dumplings… it was a one-bowl-meal that felt inexplicably healing.

    We ended our evening with two of the new desserts: the fuss-free Monaka (wafer biscuit with coffee ice cream) and the indulgent Orange & Berry Parfait. The latter reminded us of Gadbad ice cream (a loaded dessert popularly found in some parts of Goa and Karnataka). It was a fun mix of orange blossom ice cream, berry compote, raspberry jelly, ice cream, fresh fruits and crumble. Despite the number of components, the level of sweetness was controlled very well and we loved the burst of freshness that accompanied each bite.

It was founded by Rakesh Singh and Aparna Sud and is backed by a group of creative entrepreneurs from various artistic fields. The kitchen, helmed by Chef Gracian de Souza and supported by Chef Harsh Parikh, offers a modern European menu with playful Asian touches. The bar program is curated by acclaimed Mixologist Pawan Singh Rawat, well-known for his refined approach and unique creations. Hitchens has been imagined as a space for artists and lovers of art to congregate over great food (for the mind and stomach). The ambience is further enhanced by aesthetic touches that celebrate intellectual curiosity and the way it brings people together.

    5. Blah, Santacruz

    After the success of Blah BKC, a second outlet has opened in Santacruz, co-founded by Niketa P Sharma, Dilip Rawat, Anikta P Sharma and Yogesh Rawat. The food menu, curated by Chef Rahul Desai, retains some of the staples from the BKC location and also includes new brunch-inspired options. Some of the highlights are the Avocado and Feta Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Salmon Bagel, Flamingo Dragon Sushi, Wood-Fired Neapolitan-Style Pizzas, Javanese Curry with Jasmine Rice, Gochujang Grilled Chicken with Citrus Butter, Signature Drunken Noodles, Pistachio & Orange Tres Leches, 70% Callebaut Chocolate Mousse, etc. Blah’s drinks menu is the brainchild of Dimi Lezinska and represents signature takes on popular cocktails from across the globe. The 4,400-square-foot, two-storey Blah Santacruz has a grand keyhole entryway and a staircase decorated with artistic frames. The Herbarium on the second floor is a glass-door space that features disco balls spinning under mirrored ceilings. Diners are invited to test their luck at the Wine Wall, where angel and devil doors lead to surprises.

    Andheri has a new mid-century-inspired restaurant and bar that is designed to whisk you away to an era of unmatched glamour and sophistication. Reflecting vintage Asian aesthetics, Era’s plush ambience sets the stage for unforgettable experiences – whether you’re in a small or large group. Era’s menu offers a fusion of iconic Asian flavours. From the bold spices of Bangkok to the refined elegance of Singapore, with a dash of beloved Indian influences mixed in, there are many interesting options to choose from. Highlights include the Korean Chilli Potatoes, Stir Fry Shitake Mushroom & Asparagus, Tofu in Sichuan Peppercorn, Crispy Calamari, Chicken Black Pepper Malai Tikka. Zucchini Musallam, and more. Era’s signature cocktails are also inspired by its old-world glamour. Sip on concoctions such as An Afternoon in Yangon, Uchiwa Collins, On The Beach in Bali, Summer in Singapore, and others.

The kitchen is led by Chef Lalit Chunara, who aims to celebrate traditional cooking techniques. There’s also a fascinating cocktail selection inspired by coastal ingredients. The interior design is dominated by natural materials, including polished wooden tables and woven cane chairs that exude warmth and simple comforts.

Founded by Rinka Jha & Rashmi Mishra, this eating joint promises wholesome, home-style comfort through its delicious food and drink. Masterchef Abhinas Nayak is the culinary force behind the menu. Some of the must-try dishes include the Kyoto Klear, Fennel and Orange Salad, Litti Laghubitta, Cheesy Mushroom Open Sandwich, Thai Pulao with Puff Pastry, Burrata Pizza, Jalapeno Chicken Burger, Black Sesame Curry, Very Berry Cake, etc. Binny Dhadwal has curated a beverage menu that includes classic cocktails, signature sips, fascinating mocktails, coffee staples and much more.

It’s a great spot for a quiet dinner away from the immediate hustle and bustle of the city. The restaurant has a limited but delectable menu focused on Awadhi and North Indian delicacies. We recommend tasting their Lucknowi Seekh, the Doodhiya Paneer Tikka and the Peeli Mirch ka Zaffrani Aloo, Chooza Makhani, Khameeri Roti, Pudina Paratha, BarQat Dal and Dodha Barfi.

Chef Dipak Samanta has curated a menu that spotlights global as well as local delights. You can relish delicacies such as the Tomato Quinoa Soup, Beetroot Chevre Salad, Verde Panini, Truffle Mushroom Burger, Chicken Katsu Sando, Wild Mushroom Arancini, Sicilian Prawns, Smoked Chicken Pizza, Risotto Fungi, Apple Cinnamon Parfait Roll and others.

    JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar has recently opened a new restaurant on its premises: BarQat. The al-fresco space is nestled on the 10th-storey terrace of the hotel, a little distance away from the pool. It offers a limited but specialised menu of Awadhi and North Indian delicacies. We recently had the chance to dine at BarQat and sample some of its signature dishes. When we visited on a winter night, the ambience felt inviting: comfortable seating and spaced-out tables bathed in the warm glow of fairy lights and lamps.

    The restaurant is helmed by Chef Prakash Chettiyar, Director of Culinary, JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar. The single-page food menu spotlights familiar and niche specialities from various North Indian locales. Among the appetisers, we feasted on the Lucknowi Seekh, the Doodhiya Paneer Tikka and the Peeli Mirch ka Zaffrani Aloo. Each of the starters stood out to us for different reasons. The lamb kebabs were beautifully packed with spice. They arrived smoking hot on a mini grill eventually placed on the table.

    The paneer was unlike any tikka we had tasted before: it was presented in the form of something akin to a circular sandwich tart. Don’t let the description daunt you, because it’s delicious! The layers between the paneer pieces were a flavourful mixture of potatoes, dry fruits and a red chilli marinade. The Zaffrani Aloo were potatoes stuffed with khoya, veggies and cheese. Flavoured with yellow chillies and saffron, they were aromatic and delicately sweet. They also provided an interesting contrast to the fiery seekh.

    The mains are a great cross-section of popular and under-represented North Indian delights. Craving timeless treats? There are classic options like Gosht Nihari and Awadhi Biryani. Want to taste something different from the usual fare? You have the chance to try dishes like Methi Ki Tehri and Purvanchal Ka Saag. We highly recommend the Chooza Makhani, which is similar to the beloved Butter Chicken. One of the highlights of our meal was scooping this rich tomato-based gravy with Khameeri Roti and Pudina Paratha fresh from the tandoor. If you’re in the mood for a dal, relish the BarQat Dal: a luscious preparation of black lentils cooked in cream. The garlic in the tadka packs a good punch – but we were not complaining – it matched our preferences perfectly.

    BarQat’s drinks menu features a limited selection of wines, spirits, cocktails and mocktails. You can opt for classic cocktails or go with JW Signatures (bestsellers from each of the restaurants in the hotel: JW Cafe, Autm, Romano’s and BarQat). We tasted the mocktails and especially enjoyed the Pomrose Soda (a fizzy concoction with pomegranate flavour) and the Bombay Colada (BarQat’s take on a virgin Pina Colada, enhanced with some desi spices).

    There are only three options for desserts and we managed to taste two of them. The BarQat Kulfi is a dependable choice: the chilly, creamy treat was topped with bits of chikki, almonds, pistachios and rose. While it was yummy, we liked the Warm Doodha Barfi more. It was paired with a salted pistachio ice cream that elevated the flavours of the barfi in a unique way. This one’s a must-try.

    The word “BarQat” has several meanings and is often associated with terms like prosperity and blessings. In the case of this restaurant, we experienced an abundance of flavours we won’t forget anytime soon.

The city that never sleeps can seem even more awake in these months, as it welcomes a time (hopefully free) of intense heat and rain. People are more confident about spending time outdoors and enjoy various types of indulgences. Winter here is a festive season for multiple reasons and what better way to celebrate than with food?     Indian Accent has a new Chef’s Tasting menu that you cannot afford to miss this season. It celebrates the flavours of the streets of India, with festive and regal twists that will leave you curious to discover more. We were left impressed once again, by Chef Rijul Gulati’s craft. We had the opportunity to taste both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions of the menu. Both begin with a trio of bite-sized treats inspired by popular street eats: indori khopra pattice, Ladakhi apricot samosa and a mini raj kachori. In the veg menu, these are followed by Chef’s innovative take on Matar Paneer, a delicious serving of Tawa Jackfruit with sattu roti, and a luxurious Chenna Morel with saffron cream, topped with fresh truffles.

    For the non-vegetarians, the initial appetisers are followed by three varied delicacies (which we are still dreaming about) – Kanyakumari Crab, Bihari Tash Meat, and Chicken Pakoda. The main course consisted of Kashmiri Milk Lamb, Black Dairy Dal and Smoked Eggplant raita. For vegetarians, the meat is replaced by “Chowpatty In A Bowl”, a twist on Mumbai’s beloved street foods: pav bhaji, bhel and more. The mains also include Indian Accent’s signature kulchas, which were simply delicious! The dessert course featured Mahabaleshwar Strawberry Cassata, Kaju Katli Cannoli and Soft Baked Chocolate with Basundi (which is worth absolutely waiting for).

    Bandra Born started as an exciting 12-week pop-up and later established itself as a permanent restaurant and bar on Chapel Road. It has already become a beloved hotspot for locals and tourists. This October, it celebrated its 1st anniversary with a revamp of sorts. We had the chance to visit the space and learn more about all the cool new things Chef Gresham Fernandes and his team have curated. Firstly, Bandra Born is now housing India’s (and the world’s) first dedicated Mahua bar. Guests can now discover the wonders of this indigenous spirit through a thrilling lineup of cocktails that include drinks like the Mahua Colada, Mahua Mule, Tribal Negroni, and many others. Bandra Born’s regular drinks menu has also undergone some changes. New entries include Dot’s Dodol, It’s Always XXXmas in Bandra, Guah-wah, Zig Zag Nights, and other cocktails that pay homage to Bandra and celebrate Chef Gresham’s roots here.

    The food menu has some delicious additions too. We highly recommend the Watermelon Ceviche, Duck Stroop waffle and the Anglo Indian Coorgi Pork. A special shout-out to the wonderfully crisp Mutton Panroll among the savouries and the delightful Complex Kela among the desserts. We can’t wait to return and discover more favourites.

    Hurrem’s has a decadent new menu celebrating Turkish flavours through savoury and sweet treats. We spent a cosy evening sampling some of them at its outlet in Jio World Drive. We recommend the wholesome LentilSoup (especially in this season), the airy Mushroom Vol-Au-Vents and the comforting Potato & Cheese Pide. If you want to go beyond its signature baklavas for dessert, opt for the Saffron San Sebastian Cheesecake or the Turkish Coffee Chocolate Cake. We especially enjoyed the distinctive texture of the latter – but note that is best paired with a beverage. There are Turkish Teas and Coffee available, among other options. For a cooling sip, choose the lightly creamy Levantine Lemonade – which we would gladly return for. Although we didn’t have the tummy space to taste them, we must admit that the newly launched Baklava Sundaes (loaded with 3 scoops of ice cream and several other yummy elements), looked incredibly tempting.

    Bandra’s artistic foodie haven on Chapel Road, Mokai, has recently unveiled its Matcha menu. Matcha beverages were already a part of the regular menu (and we had quite liked them when we visited the cafe). However, the new launch adds an experiential dimension and more options to the list. Guests can now whisk their own matcha with authentic bamboo whisks and then choose from the extensive matcha drink selection or craft their own on the spot. Mokai has imported ceremonial grade matcha from the lush tea fields of Uji, Japan, for the same. Guests can enjoy various types of matcha fusions. For instance, The Pistachio Matcha promises to be a rich delight with Sicilian pistachio paste, house blend espresso, and organic honey. The Matcha Misu combines fresh matcha mascarpone, milk, vanilla essence, condensed milk, and house-made ladyfingers. Other highlights include the Taro Boba Matcha, Mango Matcha, Hot Madagascar Vanilla Beans Matcha, Ice Cloud Matcha, Malaysian Jaggery Matcha, etc.

    Mumbai Voters To Get 20% Discount On Dining Out – See List Of Participating Restaurants

    Maharashtra Elections 2024: The Maharashtra Assembly Elections are scheduled to take place on November 20, 2024, in a single phase across the state. In a move to boost voter turnout, the Mumbai Chapter of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has announced a special incentive. The initiative called the “Democracy Discount” promises voters a 20% dining discount at select establishments in the city. The offer will be valid on November 20 and 21, 2024. According to Rachel Goenka, NRAI Mumbai Chapter Head, the objective is to inspire “young urban voters to actively engage in the voting process.”

    The discount will be applicable on the total dine-bill at restaurants that have chosen to participate in this initiative. More than 50 eating joints in the city have already confirmed the same. Options range from popular cafes and casual spots to fine-dining restaurants and award-winning establishments. Note that only voters registered in Mumbai can take advantage of the offer. After voting, you will have to present a voter ID showing your Mumbai residency and your inked finger as proof of voting at the chosen restaurant before paying the bill. This will make you eligible for the 20% “Democracy Discount”.

    Our meal began with a Thai classic: an aromatic bowl of Tom Yum we wholeheartedly relished despite the heat of summer. The dishes that followed quickly ushered in contrast, in terms of coolness and crunch. The Spicy Salmon, Avocado & Mango Tartar marked the debut of the king of fruits during the meal. What we especially loved was the refreshing combination of the Pomelo With Roasted Coconut & Cashew Salad.

    The soups and salads set the stage for a flavourful feast to come. And Thai Pavilion delivered on this (unsaid) promise with signature flair and finesse. We savoured lip-smacking appetisers that highlighted an array of beautiful ingredients. Among the vegetarian options, we highly recommend the Sweet & Sour Water Chestnut. Another classic you cannot go wrong with here is the Crispy Lotus Root with Chili Garlic.

    Non-vegetarians, you’ll be glad to know that the restaurant has some truly delectable options for chicken, meat and various types of seafood. We liked the Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce and Thai Fish Cake, but it was the Squids Tossed In Chili Paste especially stood out to us.

    The line-up continued to impress as we moved to the main course. The Coriander Chicken has all the makings of a crowd-pleaser with familiar robust flavours and succulent pieces of chicken. Also don’t miss the signature Pla Nueng Manao (Steamed John Dory In Lemon Garlic Sauce) and the Crispy Lamb In Pepper Basil. When in doubt, you know you can always rely on Thai Green Curry, especially since classics form the backbone of the gastronomic mission at this restaurant. Among the vegetarian delicacies, we enjoyed the Thai Red Curry With Tofu & Mushroom and the Vegetable Pad Thai. For a veggie texture treat, opt for the Lotus Stem, Squash & Asparagus In Garlic Coriander Sauce.

The Mira’c, a milk-washed cocktail with Campari, Cabo and rose, is named after the word for mirage. This is translated into a deft interplay of sweetness and bitterness in the glass, as the mixologist points out. We appreciated the aesthetic touch of imprinting the ice cube with a rose design. The Khaosan – a bubbly concoction of galangal-infused gin, passionfruit, lemon and ginger ale – also came highly recommended. A touch of caramel syrup lent a wonderful depth, while the togarashi on the glass added a hint of heat.

    We ended our Thai feast with a trio of subtly sweet desserts. The Tub Tim Grob (diced water chestnut with coconut milk) delighted with its textures, while the Soft-Centered Cheese Cake radiated sweet comfort. Of course, we couldn’t leave without digging into some Mango Sticky Rice in this season.

    Every time I get a whiff of jeera aloo, I’m transported to my childhood. I’m back in school, uncovering my tiffin after hours of study. The flavourful diced potatoes, paired with soft roti, seem like the perfect replenishment. Besides, it could be easily shared among friends – few kids would say no to anything made of aloo. Recently, I was hit with the same tempting aroma while visiting a fine-dining restaurant. But my trip down memory lane was cut short when I grasped its provenance. I was being served Tresind Mumbai’s take on jeera aloo, presented in the form of espuma (vegetable foam). I was not sure what to think of this reinvention. Two bites later, my sense of suspicion was turned into delight.

    Prawns & Asparagus, Zeera Aloo Espuma, served with freshly pressed Tomato Rasam, is part of Tresind Mumbai’s new Degustation menu launched in March 2024. Apart from this 14-course meal, Chef Sarfaraz Ahmed has also curated a new Chef’s Tasting Menu. Both offerings invite diners on a one-of-a-kind culinary voyage across India. Locally sourced ingredients, indigenous flavours and imaginative techniques have been brought together to design a memorable itinerary. While several dishes have been inspired by the bounty of winter, these are more than ‘seasonal’ menus.

    The trip begins with an airily crisp Kohlrabi taco adorned with creamy yoghurt and crunchy sunchoke. It is a refreshing starter that whets your appetite for many more. The next course – a succulent Bun Kebab in a Roomali Roti Tartlet – roots you more firmly in the Indian landscape. I shall not give everything away.

    The joy of the journey here is the discovery of possibilities: What if dal vada batter was used to make a waffle? What if parmesan was incorporated into a moilee curry? What if the yellow ice cream roll on your plate tasted like Gujarati khandvi? There are many other treats in store, from savoury inventions like coconut kimchi to sweet experiments like black apple ice cream. Tresind’s signature “Khichdi Of India” has been retained, and upgraded to include more ingredients.

    Tresind’s holistic approach extends to drinks. You can request customised wine pairings or select your own favourites from the extensive menu. As for cocktails, Tresind has several innovative concoctions worth checking out. Among the new options, what stood out at our table was the Capriccio (Mirabeau gin, fresh green apple, passion fruit puree, tajin, sriracha, passionfruit and capers soda). The spice hits ever so slightly at the end, impressively balancing the other flavours. From the “House Special” category, try the simple indulgence of the vodka-based Blueberry Muffin at the end of your meal. You might be surprised to find that it captures the comforting notes of the baked treat in a cocktail glass.

    Tresind’s new menu has theatrical elements but doesn’t forget its foundations of flavour. It surprised me with its innovative reinventions of popular delicacies and humble ingredients. It’s a gastronomic experience you cannot afford to miss.
