Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels’ iconic bakery and confectionary brand from Kolkata, Flurys, launched its first tearoom in Mumbai. Located near the Gateway of India, this 100-seater establishment manages to be a cafe, bakery, restaurant, bar and more!     We started our feast with the House Cobb Salad, which had fresh, hearty portions of every ingredient. Among the appetisers, we tasted the Semolina-Crusted Chicken, which was crisp and satisfying. Flurys unsurprisingly has an expansive range of bread-based treats. Instead of a sandwich or a flatbread (both of which have several options), we decided to order one of the “Things on Toast”. While Flury’s Beans on Toast has been an iconic staple since the 70’s, the menu here also features other toppings. We chose the creamy garlic mushroom, which turned out to be unexpectedly indulgent (see picture). The massive slice of toasted bread was completely engulfed with the deliciously messy topping. It gave the dish a home-style vibe that we liked.

    The mains impressed us even more. We opted for the simplest pasta: the whole wheat spaghetti with Traditional Napoli Sauce (vegetarian). It exuded comfort like a warm hug. The flavour of the basil, the tanginess of the tomato base and the bite of the pasta were beautifully balanced. The other main dish was also one we would return for: the Grilled Rosemary Marinated Chicken. Served on a thick bed of buttery mashed potatoes, surrounded by a flavourful jus, the succulent pieces were a pure delight.

    Flurys has a wide range of beverages beyond their heritage hot tea selection. They have also introduced a few cocktails with interesting combinations. We enjoyed the Pin: 00001, an exhilarating gin-based concoction with passion fruit, basil, honey and lemon. Among the mocktails, we recommend the yummy sweet-and-sour notes of Farmers Farm (dragon fruit, orange pulp, lychee and orange juice) and the refreshing Caribbean Sea (Coconut Water, Pineapple Chunks, Ginger and Basil). Among the hot beverages, we loved the Hazelnut Mocha, which seemed to be the perfect drink to beat the monsoon blues.

    For dessert, we savoured two Flurys classics: the Rum Ball and the Strawberry Cube Pastry. While the latter was a bit too sweet for our taste, the former was just scrumptious! There are many other sweet treats to choose from too.

    The current custodians of its legacy – Chef Yajush Malik, Jasmine Singh and Mikhail Singh – explain what they set out to do: “Our goal was to introduce new features that we were unable to initially adopt and create a beautiful blend honouring the rich history that has made Gallops an iconic culinary destination.” The decor and menu have been enhanced with new features. The old parquet floors have been replaced by rich walnut flooring. The wooden trusses have been stripped of old polish to highlight the beauty of the wood beneath. Custom-made candlelight chandeliers and wall sconces bring a literal glow-up to the space.

    The restaurant also boasts an equestrian-themed memorabilia wall and a luxurious new bar area. The latter has an awe-inspiring centrepiece in the form of “The Red Dancers”, an artwork by renowned Dutch artist Peter Gentenaar. “Revamping Gallops was definitely a challenge as it was not only a prerequisite but a tough decision to go ahead with initially. We had to walk a fine line between preserving its authentic roots while subtly introducing newer, modern features to uplift its ambience and dining experience,” the partners say.

    Our meal consisted of newly introduced delicacies as well as signature Gallops dishes that have been retained on the menu. “We introduced 42 delectable dishes that showcase a modern twist on our traditional favourites, ensuring they resonate with contemporary dining trends. The main idea while curating the new offerings was to appeal to new and younger visitors as well as stand true to our long-time patrons.” Chef Yajush says. We started our meal with a luscious Paya Shorba, followed by a hearty Smoked Salmon and Nicoise Salad. We already began to note the generous portions, the thoughtful service and the warmth of the ambience. Each appetiser we tasted was an immediate hit: the decadently delicious Goan Grilled Prawns, the melt-in-the-mouth Dori Kebab (a Gallops must-try), the indulgent Chicken Zafrani Tikka and the impressively crispy Khatte Meethe Bhein. The stand out was the Chicken Liver Pate (served with Melba toast, gherkin, rum raisins and hazelnuts), which has been upgraded to include more toppings. The understated refinement of its taste and presentation seemed to capture the essence of Gallops on a platter.

    The bar menu has new additions too. We started with fruity sips of the Strawberry Aperol Harony (strawberry syrup, Aperol, Campari, Vodka) and an exquisite French 75. But the cocktail that wowed us the most was the Orchard Thief, a concoction of Bourbon whiskey, apple juice, cinnamon and bitters. The potency of the whiskey, balanced with the crisp sweetness of the apple, and rounded off with the spice at the end, made for a real treat.

    The mains continued to delight with their robust flavours. We loved the juicy succulence of the slow-cooked Braised Lamb Shanks, the convincing novelty of the Saag Burrata and the comfortingly silky Daab Chingri (served in an actual coconut). Forget plain tandoori roti and butter naan – we relished the Indian mains with delicious laal naan, missi roti and Malabari paratha, which elevated our experience. As many Gallops regulars will tell you, skipping dessert here is almost unheard of. If you want to try one of the new additions, opt for the Baileys Caramel Cloud – a medley of the all-time beloved notes of cocoa, whiskey, salted caramel and almond. If you want one of the classics, you cannot go wrong with the Baked Alaska. We demolished it in minutes despite the number of dishes that preceded it!

    Those at the helm at Gallops are quick to assure loyal patrons that they have maintained most of the facets of the original charm. Although my dining companion and I did not belong to this category of patrons, the promise fascinated us. At the preview meal for Gallops 2.0, we were the minority that indulged in its famed experience with completely fresh eyes (and palettes). So what did the first-timers find out? The answer: some of the reasons the other patrons choose to return. And thanks to the revamp, there can be more reasons to add to that list.

We had the chance to taste both types recently and were left impressed with the robust flavours and gorgeous presentation of the dishes. Vegetarians will love the unique texture of the Water Chestnut and Sweet Corn Tikki and the indulgence of the Goat Cheese Pepper featuring a stuffed Bhavnagari Chilli. In the mains, relish the creamy Delhi Special Nehru Palace Paneer Makhani and regal Dal Haveli with a mouth-watering assortment of Indian breads. We ended our meal with a satisfying Gajar Halwa crumble made with summer carrots. The tikki, dessert and dal also feature in the non-veg tasting menu. Two of our favourite non-veg dishes were the beautifully melt-in-the-mouth Rawas Dill Tikka and the aromatic Dindigul Mutton Biryani. The latter is none other than the iconic Thalappakatti Biryani from Tamil Nadu and is a must-try at Ishaara.

Highlights include the Mushroom Melt, Turkish Lamb Bread, Salmon Toast with Truffle Scrambled Eggs, Butternut Squash Curry Bowl, Grilled Salmon Bowl, Pierogis, Quinoa Cakes, Chorizo and Pepperoni Pull-Aparts, and Rotola pasta, among other lip-smacking dishes.

Thus, from delicious coffees to exciting cocktails, Eddies has beverage options for every taste. There’s also a new food menu crafted by Chef Rashid, which includes dishes inspired by Modern European, Lebanese, Mexican and American cuisines.

Keep an eye out for the Doughnut Shop Benedict, Brioche French Toast, Mushroom & Truffle Grilled Cheese and Halloumi & Smoky Tomato Jam sandwich. Also don’t miss the Brioche Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwiches – a thrilling new flavour combination will be introduced to the menu every month.

It is made using sesame oil fat-washed reposado, gari cordial, umeshu, and house umami bitters. The Shodo brings to mind the elegant strokes of Japanese calligraphy. It combines toasted rice Ballantine’s 7-year whisky, house sakura liqueur, toasted rice syrup, lemon juice, and egg white. Chada is served in a teapot and is an ode to the traditional Japanese ceremonies, while Kanagawa captures the power and beauty of “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa”. There is much more to discover.     Burma Burma is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a spectacular new menu titled ‘The 10-Year Trail.’ We had the chance to preview it at one of the restaurant’s Mumbai outlets and spent an afternoon of delicious discovery there. The menu pays homage to the ingredients and culinary traditions of different regions of Burma, spotlighting the diversity of the flavours of Burmese cuisine. We began our meal with a soul-soothing corn and mushroom soup called Sarbuthi, followed by vibrant salads. The tangy and spicy Siman Thoke featured chickpea tofu and raw papaya, while the Steamed Rice Tofu Salad was enhanced with coriander, shallot oil, crispy garlic and more. Among the mains, opt for the Monk’s Meal or Kho Poong with Pebok Chet. It has been inspired by the sustainable practices of the monasteries of Bago.

    Burma Burma is known for its extensive selection of teas and non-alcoholic drinks, including several speciality beverages. From the anniversary menu, we highly recommend the Kan Lan Yay (sugarcane juice, raspberry puree, lime, nori salt) and the Durian Float (durian fruit with a blend of durian banana milk, black grass jelly, and nata de coco).     Slink & Bardot has unveiled a delectable new menu called “Peaks To Palms: A Journey Across India.” The second edition of ‘Taste of Slink’, this six-course experience promises to whisk you away to different corners of their country for a taste of their regional flavours with a signature twist. Chef Ali Akbar Baldiwala’s creations root you in vibrant locales while highlighting their possibilities in deliciously innovative ways. We had the chance to indulge in the non-vegetarian tasting menu, where each course was also paired with cocktails that were inspired by the same regional cuisines. Expect delights like Morel Tart with buckwheat, smoked almond cream and hemp seed dukkah – that transport you to the “peaks”. On the way, we made stops at Banaras with a refreshingly playful Machli ki Chaat and at Rajasthan with a Dal Bati. The latter had a duck stuffing – a reinvention that took us by surprise in the yummiest way. This was followed by the Lamb Chop Kolhapuri, derived from Maharashtra, and the Mangalore-inspired Buff Nasi Goreng. We ended our journey at the “palms” with the heavenly Idukki Gold – banana cake with coconut ice cream and fermented banana honey. You can also choose to pair the food with only two drinks, instead of five. Our top picks were the Pahadi Firadus, Bengaluru 77 and the Coastal Creme.

Moreover, the intimate thirty-seater space aims to capture the mood of a pre-colonial Indian bar with deep wooden interiors, hand-painted botanical tiles, lamps restored from an old Bombay British whiskey bar and other thoughtful touches.

Diners can enjoy a selection of small plates, snacks, sushi, rice bowls and more in a cosy space featuring clean lines, natural materials, and a serene ambience.

The 5-star property located on the Thane – Belapur Road in Turbhe recently opened its doors and we dropped by for a leisurely experience. The hotel has a cosy all-day restaurant called 7 Isles. But its signature offering is the stunning rooftop restaurant and bar, aptly named Nazaara.     We visited Nazaara for dinner and feasted our eyes on the glittering landscape of the city at our feet. In one corner, we could just make out the shadows of the hills that flank the hotel, enhancing the drama of the setting. Nazaara has plush interiors with green, blue and earthen hues with touches of golden motifs. Since we visited in monsoon, the open-air pool area was not open for dining. However, just a quick stroll around its edges allowed us to imagine how delightful it would be to swim while enjoying a panoramic city view. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Rohit Mattummal and offers North Indian, Asian, Mughlai, and selected seafood delicacies.

    The bar specialises in Bourbon-based drinks. Among them, the Truffle Pistachio was an exciting combination of flavours, enhanced with truffle oil. The Nazaara Sour, which had hints of tamarind and jaggery, was quite satisfying too. We also tasted non-Bourbon cocktails. For a spicy treat, opt for Breezy Bliss (Tequila, jalapenos, kokum, cucumber and lime juice). If you’re looking for a smooth and sweet sip, go for the Twilight Twist (gin, rhubarb, white chocolate and kaffir lime leaves).

    We began our meal with a selection of classic Pan-Asian appetisers. We loved the Crispy Lotus Stem, Turnip Cake, the Spicy Cheese Broccoli Dimsum, the Chicken Sriracha Dim Sum and the Chicken Sui Mai. Their comforting taste paired well with our drinks, making perfect combinations to unwind after a long, hectic week. However, if we had to compare non-veg starters, the Indian ones made more of an impression. We enjoyed the flavourful succulence of both the signature Murgh Wajid Ali Kebab and the Mutton Galouti Kebab. The vegetarian Subz Galawati Kebab was also delicious.

    The desi hits continued with the main course: we relished the Nalli Nihari, Nazaara Daal and Paneer Kurchan with naan. But if there’s one dish we would definitely order again, it would be the scrumptious Kacche Murgh Ki Dum Biryani. The menu features popular Pan-Asian mains as well, among which we especially recommend the Blue Pea Edamame Rice. We ended our meal with the Ying Yang Bao for a subtle finish.

    We enjoyed buffets for breakfast and lunch at the Navi Mumbai Marriott’s all-day dining spot: 7 Isles. Helmed by Executive Chef Rohan Malwankar, its name is a nod to the city’s seven historic islands. The restaurant features seven live counters offering domestic as well as international favourites. During both meals, we tasted South Indian delicacies – which the chef takes pride in, we were told. After tasting the drool-worthy Benne Dosa and the unique Mulbagal Dosa, we understood why. They were too good to miss. At lunch, we balanced the rich aromas of the North Indian delights with refreshing salads (premade and customised). We continued our indulgence at breakfast too. Whatever we sampled from the different categories – baked items, English breakfast foods, waffles, Indian staples, local snacks and more – won us over. We also liked the inclusion of dishes like chicken keema and kothimbir vadi. The spread was nothing short of a feast and was incredibly well-curated. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, consider stopping here for breakfast during your road trip to Lonavala or other destinations. The location on the main road makes it quite easy to do so.

    The Navi Mumbai Marriott has 152 elegant rooms, with state-of-the-art fittings and necessities. Our room had a sleek, minimalistic design that made the most of the limited space a city hotel can offer. The view was similar to that from Nazaara but at a lower level. The understated luxury ensured a comfortable stay. The property has dedicated spaces for events, including a lower-level terrace for small gatherings. Apart from the rooftop pool, it also has a gymnasium and spa facility. The latter is Marriott’s well-known Quan Spa, which offers a range of treatments.

    Whether you’re a leisure or business traveller, Navi Mumbai Marriott promises to strategically cater to your needs in different ways. Alternatively, if you’re simply looking for a new destination for great food and drinks in the area, the hotel will not disappoint.
