September 26 is celebrated yearly as National Dumpling Day in the US, honouring a dish that has transcended its Asian origins to become a global favourite. Traditionally enjoyed in countries such as China and Japan, dumplings – small parcels of dough with yummy fillings – are now embraced worldwide. Made from a simple mixture of flour and water, dumplings can be prepared in various ways, including boiling, steaming, frying, or baking. Their versatility extends to the fillings as well, offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Any delicious dumpling is incomplete without a flavourful dipping sauce. Without these dips, something seems missing even in an otherwise perfect dumpling. This National Dumpling Day 2024, we bring you five fantastic dipping sauces that will elevate your dumpling experience to a new level.

Here Are 5 Bursting-With-Flavours Dipping Sauces For Your Dumplings:

    1. Chinese Hot Chili Oil Sauce

Chinese hot chilli oil sauce is a popular dipping sauce paired with Chinese dumplings. This mind-blowing dip can be prepared with just three ingredients. To make this sauce, you need 10 to 12 small dried chillies, 1/2 cup peanut oil and 1 tablespoon sesame oil. Cut off the stems of the dried chillies and remove the seeds. Chop the chillies into coarse flakes. Heat the oil in a pan and when it starts to cool (wait for about three minutes), add the chilly flakes. Leave in chilly flakes depending on how strong you want the spice in the sauce. Then strain out the oil (once it is cool) and store it in an airtight jar. You can store this dip in your fridge for up to a month.

  • For the first time, White House welcomes National Women’s Soccer League championship team

For the first time, White House welcomes National Women’s Soccer League championship team

President Joe Biden welcomed the Gotham Football Club to the White House on Monday, the first National Women’s Soccer League championship team to have the distinction.

Biden reflected on the underdog story the team, which represents both New York and New Jersey, carried through its 2023 season. Gotham’s squad went from last in the league to defeating all its naysayers in a single year.

“You never gave up, and you kept the faith, as my mother would say,” Biden said. “You retool the roster, hired a new coach, something clicked. And after a tough season, you’re the final team to make the playoffs. The saying goes, winners simply win.”

He also noted that last year’s NSWL final set a league record with 25,011 fans attending the championship game at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

“I think it’s fair to say everyone — everyone — watches women’s sports,” Biden said.

Biden then welcomed to the stage former U.S. women’s national soccer team star Ali Krieger, who played with Gotham until her retirement last year. He noted that he was the vice president the last time he saw Krieger, who had been part of the 2015 Women’s World Cup championship team.

Krieger spoke on behalf of her teammates, who she said were “deeply honored” to be the first in the NWSL to be invited to the White House for such an achievement.

“Reflecting on my career, I recall times when women’s soccer lacked coverage and support,” Krieger said. “Our progress since those days has been remarkable, from our humble beginnings to becoming champions. Both Gotham and the NWSL have seen tremendous growth with more fans, greater engagement and increased recognition.”

The work, however, is far from over, Krieger added. Every time the players touch the field, Krieger said, they keep in mind the young girls who dream of a future in sports.

Though Gotham FC is the first NSWL team to reach the White House, it is not the only women’s soccer team to be invited. Two other now-defunct leagues have been formed in the U.S. since 2000— the Women’s United Soccer Association and the Women’s Professional Soccer league.

Former President Barack Obama invited the Sky Blue FC with the WPS league to the White House in 2010, which was the New York and New Jersey team at the time. The league shut down two years later.

The NWSL has been praised for its investment in the sport, increasing viewership both in stadiums and through broadcast partnerships. In June, the NSWL reported that attendance was up 42 percent year-over-year by the league’s 12th season.

Its players’ union recently negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement that gave more control to athletes about where they play, eliminate the draft and give free agency to all players. The contract also doubles the league-minimum salary while expanding parental leave and child care benefits for players.

“This moment is not just about titles or trophies, it’s about paving the way for them being the first is historic, but it’s even more important that we ensure we are not the last,” Krieger said.

  • NAWIS wants more recognition for women in sports, national honours for Paralympic medalists – Blueprint Newspapers Limited

NAWIS wants more recognition for women in sports, national honours for Paralympic medalists – Blueprint Newspapers Limited

The leadership of the National Association for Women in Sports (NAWIS) has called on the Federal Ministry of Sports and other relevant authorities in the country to prioritise and invest more in Para-Sports, if Nigeria is to sustain its rating as a powerhouse, in para sports for the foreseeable future.

The National President of NAWIS, Professor Adefunke Suleiman, made this call, while reserving praise for Team Nigeria athletes to the just concluded 2024 summer Paralympics in Paris, France.

In a statement released to the media by the spokeswoman of the organisation, Oluwafunmike Kanjuni, the NAWIS helmswoman also celebrated six of the podium athletes for winning seven of the medals – 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals Nigeria won in Paris, to place overall 40th at the games.

The heroins are Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who won Gold in Para-Powerlifting + 86 kg; Esther Nworgu who got a Silver medal in Para-Powerlifting 41 kg; and Bose Omolayo who also won Silver in Para-Powerlifting 79 kg.

Others are Onyinyechi Mark who won the Para-Powerlifting 61 kg Gold; Flora Ugwunwa, winner of the Women’s Javelin throw F54 Silver medal; and Mariam Eniola Bolaji Badminton Women’s Singles SL3 Bronze medalist.

The only man that medaled at the Paralympics is Isau Ogunkunle who won Bronze in Table Tennis Singles Class 4, also received a thumbs up from the NAWIS leadership.

Also commenting on the feat performed by the Team Nigeria Para-Athletes, the 1st Vice President of NAWIS, Deputy Comptroller of Immigrations, Nkechi Ezeugwu, said with what was achieved in Paris, where Nigeria’s two Gold medals were won by women, the dominance of women in Nigeria’s sports should be given their rightful dues, and no longer taken for granted.

“At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, all the 12 Gold medals won by Nigeria, came via women [one was eventually chalked-off after a doping infraction]. At present Tobi Amusan (100m Hurdles) is Nigeria’s first and only World Champion and record holder in track and field,” she said.

The former National Grade 1 football referee added; “even at the Olympics, the women – Amusan, Ese [Brume], Blessing [Oborodudu] and Odunayo Adekuroye, and star girl Favour Ofili represented our best and elusive chances of winning medals,” Mrs. Ezeugwu asserted.

Like the President, Mrs. Ezeugwu believes the time has come for more women to be included in the Sports ecosystem, including the highest decision and policy making organs, for the gains made in recent years, to be sustained and improved upon.

She also echoed the wishes of the NAWIS President, that the gladiators that won medals for Nigeria at the Paralympics be handsomely rewarded, and given national honours awards.

  • National Health Service UK Advises Public to Brace for Winter with Vitamin D Supplements for Stronger Health

National Health Service UK Advises Public to Brace for Winter with Vitamin D Supplements for Stronger Health

A change in season is often marked by a rise in infections and a fall in immunity. Now that we are closer to bidding farewell to sunny summer and going forward to the colder months of the year, it would be a good time to keep a check on our immunity. There is one vitamin important for our immunity that we produce with the help of direct sunshine. This is vitamin D, also called the sunshine vitamin. Getting exposure to sun can be easy in summer. However, since one may not get enough sunlight in winter, the NHS (National Health Service) UK is advising people to boost their intake with supplements and vitamin D-rich foods between October and early March, reported Express UK.

Highlighting the importance of vitamin D, the NHS advises, “Government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter. People at high risk of not getting enough vitamin D, all children aged 1 to 4, and all babies (unless they’re having more than 500 ml of infant formula a day) should take a daily supplement throughout the year,” quoted Express UK.

According to NHS guidelines, both children and adults require 10 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin D daily. While numerous vitamin D supplements are available on the market, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating any supplements into your routine. In addition to supplements, you can naturally boost your vitamin D levels through dietary choices. Here are some foods that can help increase your vitamin D intake.

In the winter, exposure to abundant sunlight for vitamin D can be difficult.

Here Are Vitamin D-Rich Foods That You May Consider Adding To Your Diet:

    1. Fish

Oily and fatty fish, like salmon and mackerel, are excellent sources of vitamin D. Other fish varieties you can eat to increase your vitamin D intake include herring and tuna.

    2. Eggs

Including eggs in your daily diet can help increase your vitamin D intake. Egg yolks in particular are a good source of vitamin D. However, health experts suggest it is best to eat the entire egg for maximum nutritional benefits. Read more about it here.

    3. Vegetarian Sources

According to nutritionist Rupali Datta, vegetarian sources of vitamin D are few. “You can add mushrooms, milk, yoghurt, tofu, soybeans, and cheese,” she recommends.

    4. Fortified Foods

Consumption of certain fortified foods, such as some spreads, breakfast cereals, and orange juice, can also improve your overall vitamin D intake. However, it is best to check the label and avoid any products with excessive sugar or artificial flavours.

    5. Cow Milk

Cow milk is a great source of vitamin D and calcium. According to the book ‘Healing Foods’ by DK Publishing, one should drink full-fat cow milk because if you “take out its fat, then its fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are also reduced.” However, unlike in some countries, UK cow’s milk isn’t fortified with vitamin D, making it less effective as a source.

Note: It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating any new supplements or dietary changes, as individual responses to nutritional adjustments may vary.

  • Former director of Los Alamos National Laboratory dead after car crash in New Mexico

Former director of Los Alamos National Laboratory dead after car crash in New Mexico

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — A former top official in U.S. nuclear weapons research at Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national laboratories has died from injuries after an automobile crash in New Mexico, authorities said. He was 69.

Charles McMillan, an experimental physicist, spent nearly 23 years in various positions at Livermore in California and about 18 years at Los Alamos, where he was director for six years before retiring in 2017.

He died at a hospital after a two-vehicle crash early Friday on a stretch of road known as Main Hill, not far from the laboratory, police and the current lab director said.

“On behalf of the entire Laboratory, I would like to express deepest sympathies to the McMillan family and to the many current and former employees who worked closely with Charlie and knew him well,” lab Director Thom Mason said in a statement reported by the Santa Fe New Mexican.

Michael Drake, president of the University of California system, issued a statement calling McMillan “an extraordinary leader, scientist and human being who made far-reaching contributions to science and technology in service to national security and the greater good.”

The Livermore laboratory, east of San Francisco, was established as a university offshoot in 1952 and is now operated by the federal government. It maintains a close relationship with campuses and Drake’s office.

McMillan joined Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2006 after his friend and mentor, Michael Anastasio, became director. McMillan served as the principal associate director for weapons programs before becoming director in 2011, the New Mexican reported.

He oversaw the lab during expansion and safety incidents, including a 2014 radiation leak at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in southern New Mexico attributed to a waste drum that was improperly packaged at the lab. The National Nuclear Security Administration found in 2015 that the lab violated health and safety rules and docked it more than $10 million in performance awards.

Mason pointed to McMillan’s work to develop a vaccine for HIV and new modeling to better understand climate change.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico credited McMillan with “invaluable contributions to our state, to science, and to our national security” and cited his work on supercomputing and artificial intelligence.

Nella Domenici, Heinrich’s Republican challenger for U.S. Senate, called McMillan’s death “a great loss to the scientific community and his family.”

Los Alamos police and fire officials said three people were treated for injuries and McMillan and a 22-year-old woman were hospitalized after the crash, which occurred about 5 a.m. The cause was being investigated.

  • National Nutrition Week 2024: What Is Nutritional Therapy? How It Benefits Your Health

National Nutrition Week 2024: What Is Nutritional Therapy? How It Benefits Your Health

Nutrition Week, celebrated annually in India from September 1 to 7. The observance is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of nutrition for maintaining good health and well-being. The week serves as a platform to educate people on healthy eating habits, emphasizing how balanced nutrition can prevent diseases and help one stay healthy. On this occasion, we want to talk about the concept of nutritional therapy, also known as Medical Nutritional Therapy (MNT), a growing field in the management of various health conditions.

Also Read: 5 Food Combinations That Can Help With Better Absorption Of Nutrients

    What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy, as explained by Consultant Nutritionist Rupali Datta, is a scientific approach that uses food as a means to treat or manage specific diseases. She notes, “Food is an important aspect that prevents the risk of developing lifestyle diseases. If you are already suffering from a disease, it may help prevent the progression and other complications. Nutritional therapy is about how food plays a crucial role in keeping a check on diseases or the risk of developing certain diseases.”
This concept is further elaborated by the Cleveland Clinic, which describes Medical Nutritional Therapy (MNT) as a form of treatment that combines nutrition education and behavioural counselling to manage or prevent medical conditions. A registered dietitian collaborates with healthcare teams to identify a patient’s unique health needs and goals. Based on this, a personalized nutrition plan is created to maximize the intake of micro- and macronutrients, optimizing overall health. The dietitian also assists in the implementation of this plan, ensuring that the patient can effectively integrate these changes into their daily life.

    Who Needs Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is not limited to a particular group of individuals; it is beneficial for anyone looking to manage or prevent a range of health conditions. Medical Nutritional Therapy is especially important for individuals dealing with chronic diseases. For instance, those with chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or digestive issues such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and ulcerative colitis can benefit significantly from tailored dietary plans. MNT is also crucial for managing diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, and gestational) and prediabetes.

Patients with cardiovascular issues like heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and dyslipidemia (an unhealthy balance of lipids in the blood) can also find MNT helpful in managing their conditions. Moreover, people suffering from malnutrition as well as those dealing with obesity or being overweight, can see improvements in their health outcomes with nutritional therapy. Essentially, MNT serves as a critical tool in both the prevention and management of a wide variety of health concerns.

    How Effective is Nutritional Therapy?

The effectiveness of nutritional therapy largely depends on the individual’s condition and their commitment to following the prescribed nutritional plan. For many, MNT has proven to be an effective way to manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and even reduce the need for medications. For instance, in the management of diabetes, a carefully controlled diet can significantly reduce blood sugar levels, improving overall health outcomes. Similarly, patients with high cholesterol might experience reduced levels through dietary changes, potentially avoiding the need for statins or other medications.

Moreover, for patients who cannot consume food in the typical way due to short-term or long-term conditions, MNT provides vital nutritional support. This may include intravenous nutrition therapy (parenteral nutrition) or tube feeding (enteral nutrition), ensuring that patients still receive the essential nutrients their bodies need to function optimally.

Also Read: Nutrition In Food: An Ultimate Guide To All Nutrients You Should Be Having

    Benefits of Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional therapy offers several benefits, including:

    1. Personalized Care: MNT provides a tailored approach to nutrition, addressing the specific needs and goals of the individual.
    2. Disease Management: It can help manage chronic conditions, reducing symptoms and slowing disease progression.
    3. Medication Reduction: By improving health through diet, some individuals may reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications.
    4. Prevention: MNT plays a crucial role in preventing the onset of lifestyle-related diseases by promoting healthy eating habits.
    5. Nutritional Support: For those unable to consume food normally, MNT ensures they receive the necessary nutrients through alternative methods.

What is an Example of Nutritional Therapy?

An example of nutritional therapy might involve a patient with Type 2 diabetes. The registered dietitian, after assessing the patient’s health, would create a nutrition plan focusing on low-glycemic index foods, rich in fibre, and balanced in macronutrients. The plan might include increasing the intake of vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while reducing processed sugars and saturated fats. The dietitian would also provide education on portion control and meal timing to help stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the day. This personalized approach helps the patient manage their diabetes more effectively, potentially reducing the need for insulin or other diabetes-related medications.

Whether it’s for preventing lifestyle diseases or managing chronic conditions, nutritional therapy offers a science-backed, personalized approach to achieving better health outcomes. As awareness grows, more people can benefit from this powerful tool in promoting wellness and preventing disease.
