    WASHINGTON — An American cryptocurrency executive held in Nigeria for the past eight months has been released after authorities there announced they were ending his money laundering trial on health and diplomatic grounds.

    Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s head of financial crime compliance, was freed on humanitarian parole and was returning to the United States to receive medical attention, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement Thursday announcing the release.

    “I am grateful to my Nigerian colleagues and partners for the productive discussions that have resulted in this step and look forward to working closely with them on the many areas of cooperation and collaboration critical to the bilateral partnership between our two countries,” Sullivan said.

    Gambaryan was arrested in February during a business trip to Nigeria alongside Nadeem Anjarwalla, the company’s regional manager in Africa, who fled custody and remains at large.

    Nigerian authorities had accused Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and Gambaryan of using the platform to launder up to $35 million and to manipulate the local naira currency, which they deny.

    Nigeria is Africa’s largest crypto economy in terms of trade volume, with many citizens using crypto to hedge their finances against surging inflation and the declining local currency.

    But as its users grew and the government struggled to stabilize the currency, officials alleged without providing evidence publicly that the platform was being used to launder money and finance terrorism, forcing it to stop all trading with the local currency on its platform.

    On Wednesday, R.U. Adaba, a prosecuting lawyer with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, told the Federal High Court in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, that the government was ending the case after “taking into consideration some critical international and diplomatic reasons.”

    Binance still faces charges on suspicion of tax evasion and operating without the required license.

    Gambaryan’s trial has been shrouded in controversy, including over allegations that he and his colleague were illegally detained and their passports seized. Binance also alleged that Nigerian officials demanded bribes to release him and Anjarwalla.

    The Nigerian government denied the bribery allegation and defended the prosecution as following the rule of law.

    Gambaryan’s health deteriorated as his court case dragged on. The court in Abuja denied him bail twice after a judge ruled he was a flight risk and that he should remain at the Kuje prison in the capital city.

    Libya threatens legal action after Nigeria pulls out of football qualifier

    The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) is criticizing Nigeria’s decision to withdraw from the 2025 AFCON qualifier in Libya and is threatening to take legal action.

    On Monday, Nigeria’s national football team the Super Eagles walked off the fixture citing safety concerns after being stranded at a local airport in Libya without food and internet access for more than 16 hours.

    Tuesday’s statement by the LFF accused its Nigerian counterpart, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) of not cooperating with local organizers.

    LFF said the flight diversion was possibly caused by routine aircraft protocols, security checks or logistical problems beyond their control, adding that Libyan players faced similar challenges in last week’s reverse fixture in Nigeria.

    LFF said it will “take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the Libyan national football team.”

    The Nigerian Super Eagles had been scheduled to take on the Mediterranean Knights of Libya on Tuesday to seal their qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.

    However, the Nigerian men’s team pulled out of its Confederation of African Football, or CAF, qualifier in Libya and returned home in protest at being abandoned at an airport after their plane was diverted.

    The NFF said the team was taken to Al-Abraq International Airport three hours away from the venue of the match and that local authorities did not make alternative travel plans for the team.

    “It is consistent with their … hostile attitude toward other Africans,” said Ademola Olajire, spokesperson of the NFF. “We have filed a formal letter, the whole world is aware of what happened and how everything went, and we expect a reasonable and justifiable decision from CAF.”

    Libyan authorities also have rejected allegations of foul play or willful attempt to dampen the morale of the Nigerian players ahead of Tuesday’s match.

    However, Nigerian sports analyst Daniel Aderiye said Libya has faltered many times in the past.

    “Historical antecedents have put them in a very bad spot,” Aderiye said. “It’s the most hostile environment anybody can play football in. They should go ahead and threaten because as far as we’re concerned, we will not be dimwitted. CAF has said they’re going to intervene — a disciplinary board has been set up to that effect.”

    On Monday, the CAF said it was talking to both Nigeria and Libya and would take action if a member violated its rules.

    Local football club coach Fred Tebit said Nigeria’s diminishing positive public image is to blame.

    “We should not forget where we belong in the ranks of Africa — a national team of such caliber with players playing all over the top clubs in Europe will be treated as such, and I think CAF should take a tough stance on this,” he said. “Our government is not helping matters, our country is full of corruption, embezzlement, so that’s why the Libyans [think] they can measure shoulders with us.”

    Last Friday, Nigeria defeated Libya 1-0, securing seven points over three games in their group. The top two teams in each group will advance to the 24-team finals.

    ABUJA, Nigeria — Meta’s oversight board expressed serious concern Tuesday over the company’s failure to take down a viral graphic video showing two men bleeding after they were apparently beaten up for being allegedly gay.

    The video was posted in Nigeria, one of more than 30 of Africa’s 54 countries where homosexuality is criminalized by laws that garner broad public support despite constitutional guarantees of freedoms. Such laws are often used to target and illegally arrest people suspected of being gay, with abuses against them often ignored.

    The report said the damage done by the video, which was viewed more than 3.6 million times between December 2023 and February this year, was “immediate and impossible to undo.”

    The board said the content “shared and mocked violence and discrimination” and though reported multiple times and reviewed by three human moderators, it stayed on Facebook for about five months despite breaking four different rules.

    “With the video left up, the odds of someone identifying the men and of the post encouraging users to harm other LGBTQIA+ people in Nigeria increased,” the panel said. “Even after it was removed, the Board’s research shows there were still sequences of the same video remaining on Facebook.”

    In the video, two men were seen bleeding as a crowd of people interrogated them about their identity and sexual orientation.

    Meta couldn’t be reached for immediate comment.

    The company admitted two errors regarding the said video, the panel said, in that its automated systems identified the language spoken in the video as English while it was the Igbo language spoken in southeastern Nigeria “but not supported by Meta for content moderation at-scale,” and that Meta’s human review teams also misidentified the language as Swahili.

    “This raises concerns about how content in unsupported languages is treated, the choice of languages the company supports for at-scale review and the accuracy of translations provided to reviewers working across multiple languages,” the panel said.

    In its report, the board recommended Meta update its Coordinating Harm and Promoting Crime Community Standard to include clear examples of “outing-risk groups,” conduct an assessment of enforcement accuracy of the prohibition on exposing the identity or locations of those alleged to be a member of such groups, ensure language detection systems identify content in unsupported languages and provide accurate translations while routing content for review.
