NCDs not a lifestyle choice, reminds WHO official

MANILA, Philippines — Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are not lifestyle choices, an official of the World Health Organization (WHO) said, emphasizing that contacting the diseases are influenced by many factors.

Olivia Lawe-Davies, Communications Manager of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office, said that it has been common for people to think that NCDs are lifestyle diseases.

“People still talk and think of NCDs as lifestyle diseases as if it is a lifestyle choice… That’s not a lifestyle choice,” Lawe-Davies said in a media workshop in Cubao, Metro Manila on Wednesday that convened journalists from the Western Pacific Region.

Lawe-Davies noted that the diseases are not attributed to the sudden change of lifestyle of many people.

“We have seen an explosion of NCDs in the recent years. That’s not because everyone as individuals suddenly decided to change their lifestyle. It’s because there are different forces that are pushing them in the direction of their behaviors and factors that are making them sick,” she added.

The communications manager also called on journalists and the WHO to work together to stop calling NCDs as “lifestyle diseases.”

“That will be a huge win… It;s about cutting through the noise. As WHO, we have pretty limited resources, we are very thin on the ground,” Lawe-Davies stated.

According to WHO, the four main types of NCDs are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases that “impose a major and growing burden on health and development.”

Further, data shown by Xi Yin, Coordinator of the NCD Prevention and Health Promotion of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office, in the same media workshop, said that ¾ of all deaths in the world are from NCD.

Yin also said that the driving factors of NCDs are the following: modifiable behavioral risk factors, biological factors, social determinants, environmental and structural drivers, climate change, commercial drivers, population ageing.

Meanwhile, a report released by the WHO in October showed that Filipinos had a higher risk of dying from NCDs than other people from the Western Pacific region.

  • India Makes Official 2036 Olympic Bid

India Makes Official 2036 Olympic Bid

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitted their official Letter of Intent to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games this week.

Though a location is not yet final, the Indian Express reports that western city Ahmedabad is a frontrunner. The campaign is pushing to add yoga, chess, and squash along with other traditional Indian sports like kho kho and kabaddi to the 2036 program.

If selected, this would be India’s first time hosting a major international multi-sport event in over 25 years. Most recently, New Delhi served as the host of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which was riddled with criticism and controversies.

During the construction of the games there were reportedly dozens of workers that died. Workers also reported receiving compensation below minimum wage. Furthermore, several publications reported evidence of child labor at the commonwealth games.

The week before the start of the games, 10,000 volunteers backed out from helping the event.

There were also swimming-specific issues at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. On the first night, debris from the ceiling fell into the pool, causing meet delays. The pool’s water filtration system also broke before the final session of competition.

Despite controversies of India’s Commonwealth Games, India’s 2036 plan has been backed by current IOC president Thomas Bach. Additionally, French president Emmanuel Macron supported the bid and said his country would exchange expertise from the Paris 2024 Olympics if India were to be selected.

India, the second-largest country on earth by population and fifth-largest economy on earth by GDP, has begun to catch the attention of the IOC for its commercial potential. Cricket, which is wildly popular in India, is being added as an Olympic sport by Los Angeles 2028 organizers, and the IOC is even considering moving the events from Los Angeles to the American east coast to make the time zone more convenient for fans in India.

Observers hope that a rapid modernization in India over the last decade along with increasing political influence will help it avoid some of the pitfalls that the Commonwealth Games faced.

India becomes one of four 2036 official bids thus far, joining Istanbul, Türkiye; Santiago, Chile; and Nustantra, Indonesia. The IOC reports that dozens of other locations have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 games. Other prominent campaigns include Doha, Qatar, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The host of the 2036 Games will not be decided until after next year’s IOC elections.

  • Football Governance Bill revisions – EFL official statement released in response

Football Governance Bill revisions – EFL official statement released in response

The EFL have welcomed changes to the upcoming Football Governance Bill, which will deliver the Independent Football Regulator.

The bill still needs to go through the full legislative process ahead of becoming law, however, new changes to the planned legislation have seen a major shift.

Newcastle United and Saudi Arabia have been heavily referenced, due to the news that the clause has been dropped in the football regulator legislation, that it would have to take UK foreign policy into account, when deciding on club takeovers. With the requirement “to consider government foreign policy dropped to cement regulator’s full independence.”

Another big change, which is of significant importance to the EFL, is that now the planned legislation will now give the independent football regulator power over Premier League parachute payments.

This has been the official EFL response to the new reframed Football Governance Bill legislation.

EFL Statement on Football Governance Bill – 23 October 2024:

    EFL Statement: Football Governance Bill

    EFL Chair Rick Parry said:

“The EFL welcomes the new Football Governance Bill, and thanks the Secretary of State, Lisa Nandy MP for the genuine commitment and openness she has displayed towards the EFL and its Clubs on this matter since coming into Government. We also appreciate the time which she and her team have taken to consider and understand many of our concerns with the previous iteration of the Bill.

“It has been our long-held view that there is a requirement for Independent Regulation, and we believe the Bill has been framed in a way that will enable the new Regulator to protect and achieve the sustainability of Clubs across the entire football pyramid.

“It is also pleasing that the State of the Game report, which will provide the objective and independent basis for the new Regulator’s work, will be delivered within 18 months. We look forward, in collaboration with our Clubs, to making a significant contribution to this important piece of work.

“Alongside the issue of financial reform, the EFL also recognises the key and leading role it has to play across other areas the Bill addresses, including the role of fan consultation, heritage protection and the commitments made to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

“As the Bill now begins its passage through Parliament, we will first take time to scrutinise its full detail and implications for Clubs across the pyramid, including the key issue around the Regulator’s backstop powers in respect of financial redistribution, while at the same time continuing to offer our support and insight to MPs and Peers.

“The EFL’s core purpose is to safeguard the sustainability of our Clubs for future generations of supporters, and the social value they deliver in the communities they serve. We know how much our Clubs matter, but too many face or have faced financial trauma due to their over-reliance on owner funding and overstretching in their attempts to bridge growing financial gaps.

“We have always been clear throughout this process that our intention is not to harm or hinder the strength of the Premier League, and the value which it generates for the wider pyramid, including the EFL and our competitions. Rather, this is about creating a framework for a sustainable and competitive pyramid which fosters sporting jeopardy without financial catastrophe, underpinned by better regulation and fairer redistribution.”

  • Russia is behind viral disinformation targeting Walz, intelligence official says

Russia is behind viral disinformation targeting Walz, intelligence official says

WASHINGTON — Groups in Russia created and helped spread viral disinformation targeting Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, a senior U.S. intelligence official said Tuesday.

The content, which includes baseless accusations about the Minnesota governor’s time as a teacher, contains several indications that it was manipulated, said the official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Analysts identified clues that linked the content to Russian disinformation operations, said the official, who briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity under rules set by the office of the director.

Digital researchers had already linked the video to Russia, but Tuesday’s announcement is the first time federal authorities have confirmed the connection.

The disinformation targeting Walz is consistent with Russian disinformation seeking to undermine the Democratic campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris and Walz, her running mate. Russia also has spread disinformation aimed at stoking discord and division ahead of voting, officials said, and may seek to encourage violent protests after Election Day.

Last month, analysts at Microsoft revealed that a viral video that baselessly claimed Harris left a woman paralyzed in a hit-and-run accident 13 years ago was Russian disinformation. More recently, a video surfaced featuring a man claiming to be a former student of Walz’s who accused the candidate of sexual misconduct years ago. Private researchers at firms that track disinformation, including NewsGuard, already have concluded the video was fake and that the man in the footage isn’t who he claimed to be.

Some researchers have also suggested the video may contain evidence that it was created using artificial intelligence, but federal officials stopped short of the same conclusion, saying only that the video contained multiple indications of manipulation.

China and Iran also have sought to influence the U.S. election using online disinformation. While Russia has targeted the Democratic campaign, Iran has gone after Republican Donald Trump with disinformation as well as hacking into the former president’s campaign. China, meanwhile, has focused its influence efforts on down-ballot races, and on general efforts to sow distrust and democratic dissatisfaction.

There is no indication that Russia, China or Iran are plotting significant attacks on election infrastructure as a way to disrupt the outcome, officials said Tuesday.

Jen Easterly, director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, has said improvements to election security mean there is no way any other foreign adversary will be able to alter the results.

Russia, China and Iran have all rejected claims that they are seeking to meddle with the U.S. election. Messages left with the Russian embassy seeking comment on the Walz video were not immediately returned Tuesday.

  • It’s Official: Emily In Paris Will Be Back For A Fifth Season

It’s Official: Emily In Paris Will Be Back For A Fifth Season

This article contains mild spoilers for season four of Emily In Paris.

In the fourth season of Emily In Paris, our beloved fish-out-of-water, Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), broke format when she hopped a plane for Rome. Though she was ostensibly there to work and open a new office for Agence Grateau, she had no trouble fitting in some play and a little bit of romance, as well.

It was a refreshing shift from the usual Parisian drama we’ve become accustomed to (and fallen in love with) in Emily In Paris, and we certainly didn’t mind being introduced to her new love interest, Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini). But as the season came to an end, and we re-engaged our brain from its lovely little stupor, we immediately went hunting to see whether it has been renewed for a new season.

And blessedly, it has! Lily Collins announced on Monday that Emily In Paris will be returning to Netflix for a fifth season. In the days since, we’ve learned a little bit more about whether it will be based in Paris or not.

“We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!” creator Darren Star tells Tudum (a publication run by Netflix). He elaborated, saying that Emily will definitely have a presence in Rome this season, but that doesn’t mean she won’t be returning to her life in Paris, as well.

Appearing on Good Morning America for the announcement, Collins explained her hopes for Emily in the new season. “Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,” she says. “We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”

It’s a relief but not a surprise that the show is returning for another season, given its success. According to Tudum, Emily in Paris ranked  #1 on the Netflix Global Top 10 when it premiered in August, and had 19.9 million views in its first four days. That was enough to secure the Top 10 in 93 countries, where it has remained ever since.

Season four was a welcomed change from previous seasons, and honestly, it was one that we didn’t even realise we needed until the first episodes aired in August and we found ourselves rooting against Gabriel. In Marcello, we watched a charming romance unfold, and that’s one of the big reasons we tuned in.

“I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection,” agrees Collins. “A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season.”

A premiere date and cast list is still to be confirmed, but we’ll update you as we learn more about Emily In Paris season five.
