Michigan officially announces contract extension for AD Warde Manuel

It’s a good time to be the Athletic Director at the University of Michigan right now. Michigan Football won a National Championship in 2023, the football team has beat Ohio State four years in a row, and the No. 1 overall prospect and No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 class, Bryce Underwood, committed to Michigan on Wednesday.

These happenings along with successes in a wide array of other sports has earned Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel a five-year contract extension. Manuel’s contract will run through June, 30, 2030.

Michigan released a statement about Manuel’s extension, which includes quotes from Manuel and Michigan President Santa J. Ono. Read it below.

    Michigan’s Statement

“During Warde’s tenure as director, Athletics has put a structure in place where our student-athletes compete for Big Ten and national championships, excel in the classroom, and proudly graduate with their University of Michigan degrees,” President Santa J. Ono said during the Board of Regents’ Dec. 5 meeting.

Manuel — who played football under Bo Schembechler, threw the javelin in track and field, and ultimately earned three degrees from U-M — returned to the university in 2016 following a successful tenure as the athletic director at the University of Connecticut.

He is the 12th athletic director in U-M’s history and oversees 29 teams, more than 900 student-athletes, an annual budget of $250 million and a staff of 400. The department remains financially independent and self-supporting.

“I want to express my gratitude to President Ono, Board Chair Kathy White, and the members of the Board of Regents who have been very supportive of me and our athletic department,” Manuel said. “I look forward to continuing the success that we have driven together during this changing landscape in college athletics.

“Every day, I am thankful to work at this great institution and to represent Michigan Athletics. I especially want to thank the student-athletes, coaches and staff who compete for each of our teams and who have helped us achieve unparalleled success athletically and academically. I am excited to continue giving back to a university that has provided me with so much over my career.”

Under his leadership, the university has won 52 Big Ten championships across all sports since 2020 and last year U-M won the 2023 Football National Championship.

Academics remain a focus for Manuel. A new record was set this summer when 243 student-athletes were named to the 2024 Academic All-Big Ten team, an achievement that requires athletes to be in at least their second academic year and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Manuel is a member of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee and currently represents U-M and the Big Ten as the chairman of the group. He will be honored Dec. 10 with the National Football Foundation’s 2024 John L. Toner Award, which recognizes athletic directors who have demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics, particularly college football.

Hybrid models, competitive prices: New Honda Freed and Civic Hybrid officially launched in Singapore, Lifestyle News

Singapore’s official Honda distributor, Kah Motor, is looking to boost its fortunes with the launch of two new models, the latest third-generation Freed MPV, as well as the hybrid-powered version of the Civic sedan.

The new cars come amidst a challenging year for the brand, in the face of high Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums, as well as the entry of several new Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands which have quickly gained market share at the expense of traditional mainstream Japanese marques like Honda.

Kah Motor sold 526 Hondas in the first half of this year, which puts it in 10th position on the charts. In contrast, Chinese carmaker BYD, which was the best-selling brand for the first half of 2024, shifted 2,587 units during the same period, nearly five times as many as Honda sold.

Nicholas Wong, CEO of Kah Motor, acknowledged that while the Chinese EV brands are making aggressive progress in Singapore, there remains a segment of the market that is not ready to embrace full electrification as of yet.

He told AsiaOne at the sidelines of the Freed and Civic Hybrid’s launch event that he hopes that Honda can help fill the gap with its new lineup of hybrid models that offer premium features at a competitive price.

What’s significant about the new Freed?

The latest third-generation Freed is one of the few compact seven-seater MPVs in the market that is eligible for a Category A COE. The car is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a hybrid drivetrain, and produces a total of 130hp and 253Nm of torque.

Fuel economy is rated at 5.1 litres per 100km, which is not far off from that of the Freed’s closest competitor in the market, the Toyota Sienta Hybrid, which has a claimed fuel economy figure of 4 litres per 100km. The only other Cat A seven-seater currently available in the market is the electric-powered BYD M6.

Two variants of the Freed are available, the HS7 and HE7, which retail for $161,099 and $166,099 respectively, both inclusive of COE as of December 2024. A Kah Motor spokesperson revealed that they have already sold “at least 100” units of the Freed before the car’s official launch on Nov 29.

Standard equipment for both include the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance systems, which comes with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, and collision mitigation and braking systems.

The higher-spec HE7 variant includes additional equipment such as automatic folding door mirrors, leather upholstery and steering wheel, rear air con vents, adaptive high beam headlamps, and LED cornering lights.

    What about the Civic Hybrid?

The Civic Hybrid, meanwhile, joins the regular petrol-powered Civic in the lineup, which incidentally has also been given a mid-life facelift to keep it refreshed.

Power for the Civic Hybrid comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine that is paired with two electric motors, for a combined power output of 141hp and 315Nm of torque.

Unfortunately, this means that the car gets bumped into COE Cat B, but the Civic Hybrid compensates for that with its excellent fuel economy figure of 4.6 litres per 100km.

The facelifted Civic models get a revised front end look, with a sportier grille design. In addition, both also get the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance systems as standard, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning with automatic braking.

The Civic Hybrid is priced at $218,099 inclusive of COE, while the regular Civic, which qualifies for a Cat A COE thanks to its 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 129hp, is retailing for $172,099 with COE.

Honda hopes that the new Freed and Civic Hybrid models will help it regain its competitiveness in the market, by appealing to those looking for hybrid-powered cars that are efficient, practical and fun to drive in the transition towards electrification.

  • Sorry To The Laundry List Of College Football Teams Hoping To Steal Curt Cignetti Away From The Hoosiers, But He’s Officially Staying In Indiana After Signing A Massive Contract

Sorry To The Laundry List Of College Football Teams Hoping To Steal Curt Cignetti Away From The Hoosiers, But He’s Officially Staying In Indiana After Signing A Massive Contract

So much for a bye week! The grind doesn’t stop! Yesterday Indiana was making waves by announcing coveted recruits committing to the program, and now the Hoosiers drop an atomic bomb on all of us. I’m making my coffee, planning my morning, ready to have a Saturday where football isn’t the main focus, and Indiana decides to cuck the college football world by extending Curt Cignetti’s contract through the year 2032.

Indiana has had the best season in program history, hitting the 10 win benchmark for the first time ever (leaving Iowa State and Vanderbilt as the only power conference schools to not achieve double digit wins.) While Hoosier football fans have tried to enjoy the excitement, the haters have made their voices loud – enjoy it while you can, because Cignetti is GONE after this season. He’ll be coaching the Gators, or the Buckeyes by next season. Well, everyone can shut the fuck up, because he’s staying in Bloomington.

Would you rather be a legend for the rest of time at Indiana, or go to Ohio State and at best be another guy who won a title OR gets run out of town in 4 years for not meeting the fanbases expectations? (shoutout IU basketball) Cignetti chose to be a legend at a place that will appreciate him forever after completely changing the culture of the football program. For what Cig is now getting paid, leaving for another school wouldn’t make sense. His original deal was $4.5 million annually through 2029, but has now been bumped to $8 million annually to 2032. Looking at the highest paid coaches in college football, why not take a few million less to stay at a place where expectations aren’t sky high, but you clearly can be involved in a chance at the national title game? You could maybe argue resources/ facilities, but Indiana has some of the best thanks to Daddy Cuban and the Simons. Indiana has always had money, they’ve just never had a reason to spend it on the football team. AND, the facilities that are already state of the art are only getting better after IU announced a few weeks ago an expansion to memorial stadium.

Side note: maybe my biggest take away from the highest paid coaches list is Brian Kelly is a thief, and I’d much rather pay Cignetti than that red faced fuck Brian Kelly.

After years of disappointment and watching disgusting football being played, I’m still in shock every time I see this Indiana Hoosiers football team play ball. This team actually knows how to play the game. Indiana has had talented team in the past, but absolutely zero coaching. Cig is the hardass the program needed to turn things around. Preaching fundamentals and no one is bigger than the team. Where have I heard that before? Oh, Bobby Knight a man who won with less talent than any of the big name coaches out there. Here’s to hopping Cig is the Robert Montgomery Knight of the football program (with a little less assaulting players.)

  • Smart officially opens its new showroom in Singapore with the launch of the Smart #3, Lifestyle News

Smart officially opens its new showroom in Singapore with the launch of the Smart #3, Lifestyle News

Smart has officially opened its new showroom in Singapore, and it marked the occasion with the launch of its second model to go on sale here, the #3.

Where is the new Smart showroom?

The Smart showroom is located at level 3 of the Mercedes-Benz Center, which is at 301 Alexandra Road.

The decision to house the Smart showroom within the Mercedes-Benz Center highlights Smart’s heritage and links with the Mercedes-Benz brand. The dedicated space will house Smart’s current #1 as well as the new #3 models, in both Pro+ and Brabus variants.

The showroom is designed to have a bright and minimalist design, illuminated by natural light. Besides the cars on display, the showroom will also feature paint swatches for customers to select their colour choices for their Smart cars, as well as a merchandise corner with a selection of Smart-branded items available for purchase.

What else did they announce at the event?

Smart commemorated the opening of their showroom with the launch of the Smart #3, their second model to join the lineup in Singapore after the arrival of the #1 earlier this year.

The #3 is a slightly larger electric crossover with a coupe-SUV bodystyle, and like the #1, it comes in Pro+ and Brabus variants.

Despite using the same platform as the #1, the #3 is wider and longer, and has a lengthier wheelbase (by 35mm) than the smaller car. This means that the #3 offers more interior space for passengers, as well as a larger boot, despite the sportier design that features a sloping roofline.

The rest of the #3’s interior mirrors the #1, except for a couple of notable changes. The air conditioning vents in the centre are now circular instead of the slim design on the #1, while the virtual assistant avatar in the infotainment system is now a cheetah instead of a fox. There is also a panoramic glass roof that’s ‘permanently open’, and dispenses with the retractable shade.

The drivetrain is likewise similar to the #1, but Smart has tweaked the performance of the #3 to give it a sportier driving experience. The #3 Pro+ goes from 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds, 0.9 seconds faster than the #1 Pro+, while the #3 Brabus tackles the same sprint in 3.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than its #1 equivalent.

Pricing for the Smart #3 Pro+ starts at $223,000 with COE (as of Sept 2024), while the Smart #3 Brabus is going for $267,000 with COE. For the showroom’s opening weekend (Sept 14 and 15), Smart is offering exclusive deals worth up to $10,000 for interested customers.
