    Charlton Athletic, QPR must look at Iain Dowie’s Crystal Palace tenure with envy

    Iain Dowie’s managerial career was relatively short-lived and he’s been out of work since 2010 but he certainly impressed during his early years.




    The former Northern Ireland international managed six different clubs between 2002 and 2010, and it’s clear that his best days came as Crystal Palace boss between 2003 and 2006 when he led the Eagles to Premier League promotion.

    However, his relative success at Selhurst Park meant that he didn’t live up to those same expectations elsewhere, and Palace’s London rivals, Charlton Athletic and QPR, will look back at the former striker’s spell at the Eagles with envy after disappointing spells at the respective clubs.

    After a spell at Oldham Athletic, Dowie took over at Crystal Palace in December 2003, taking over a side struggling in the lower echelons of the Division One table, with morale clearly low.


    However, the Northern Irishman’s arrival saw the Eagles embark on an inspired run of form which saw them win 17 of his first 23 games in charge, taking a side that had been struggling in the lower echelons of the table to sixth place, sneaking into the play-off places.

    The fairtytale didn’t end there either, with Dowie’s side defeating Sunderland in the play-off semi-final before beating West Ham in the final at the Millennium Stadium, leading them to a surprise promotion to the Premier League.

    Given where Palace were prior to Dowie’s arrival, their resurgence and subsequent promotion to the Premier League was nothing short of remarkable, and he proved his credentials as a manager.

    Things didn’t go quite to plan in the top flight and his side were relegated after finishing 18th on the final day of the season, but his Palace side performed well in the Championship the following season, reaching the play-offs yet again before being defeated by eventual play-off winners Watford in the semi-final.

    That was to be his final game in charge, and he left by mutual consent in May 2006, joining South London rivals Charlton Athletic ten days later.


    The Addicks were a Premier League side at the time and, after a successful spell at Crystal Palace, it looked like a shrewd appointment, but it proved to be anything but.

    He took charge of just 15 games before being sacked in November 2006 with the club struggling in the Premier League and having been knocked out of the EFL Cup by Wycombe Wanderers at the quarter-final stage, and that wasn’t to be his last disappointing spell as manager of a London club.

    Charlton Athletic could do with signing a player that can have the same impact as Bradley Wright-Phillips in January.

    After a spell at Coventry City, Dowie took over at QPR ahead of their 2008/09 Championship campaign, but he lasted just 15 games, being sacked in October 2008.

    This was a harsher sacking than the one at Charlton, with QPR in ninth position at the time of his sacking, so certainly not struggling, but the Hoops’ hierarchy weren’t impressed, and that brought down the curtain on his time at the club.

    Given his success at Palace, his time at Charlton and QPR failed to live up to expectations and supporters of the two clubs will surely look back with envy at what he did elsewhere.

    Dowie had a brief spell as Alan Shearer’s assistant manager towards the end of the 2008/09 campaign as Newcastle United were relegated from the Premier League, and he suffered yet another relegation from the top-flight the following season.

    He joined Hull City as the club’s Football Management Consultant in March 2010 after Phil Brown was placed on gardening leave, but Dowie was unable to help keep them in the Premier League, finishing 19th in the top flight, and that proved his final job in management.

    Considering Dowie made such a promising start to life as a manager and thrived at Crystal Palace, it was a surprise to see his managerial career come to an end after just eight years, and he instead became a regular feature on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme.

    While the ex-Northern Ireland striker may not have had too much success elsewhere, he certainly did well at Palace, and it may have left supporters of other sides envious that he couldn’t quite replicate that at their clubs.

    Former Charlton Athletic manager, Alan Curbishley, used a seemingly innocuous mistake by Iain Dowie to help seal Crystal Palace’s relegation in 2005.




    In professional football, the slightest advantages, even those psychological, can make all the difference. This may well have been true for Dowie’s lowly Eagles, who were relegated on the final day of the 2004-05 season in incredible circumstances.

    Having led 2-1 as late as the 82nd minute, Jonathan Fortune’s equaliser, the final goal of the day, secured Palace’s downfall – and to make it even more painful, it came at the hands of their local rivals.


    Happier memories for Charlton supporters, but fans might be surprised to know that, according to their beloved ex-gaffer, the catalyst for this result began, bizarrely, during a League Cup tie seven months prior.

    While the idea of Charlton being a comfortable mid-table side in the English top flight might be difficult to imagine in the present day, this was very much the case exactly 20 years ago.

    The Addicks were long-safe, sitting 13 points ahead of Dowie’s Eagles in the table. With relatively nothing to play for except pride, you’d be forgiven for thinking the game didn’t matter to Curbishley and co.

    However, with bragging rights in South London on the line, and a chance to relegate a local rival, this was simply not the case, especially as Palace had already defeated them at The Valley that season in a third round Carling Cup tie, eliminating them from the competition.


    A pitch-side interview with the club in 2021 revealed that Curbishley felt little to no remorse for their supporting role in this tragedy, even admitting that he had used some managerial dark arts to try and get one over on them.

    “They’d have done the same to us without a shadow of a doubt,” he said.

    “I think we played them in the League Cup earlier on in the season, and somehow, they left all their notes in the away dressing room.

    “One of the apprentices picked them up and brought them in to me, and it had all the bad things that he had all the bad things that he had said about our players on it.

    “So I thought, you know what, I’ll save that for when we next play them, and I just pinned it to the dressing room wall for certain players and said ‘this is what they think of you’. You can’t run, you’re not strong enough, you aren’t aggressive enough.”

    A move that wouldn’t seem out of place in an episode of Ted Lasso, Curbishley had used the external words of criticism as an opportunistic attempt to invigorate his squad.


    While it is impossible to prove that this did, in fact, have a bearing on the result, it is interesting to note that two of the six players to have featured in both fixtures (Jerome Thomas and Jonathan Fortune), likely featuring in these infamous notes, combined for the all-important equaliser.

    In uninspiring times at The Valley, a trip down memory lane such as this may bring bittersweet nostalgia for the early 00s and their inarguable managerial legend.

    Shortly after the aforementioned interview, in April 2021 it was announced that the League One club would rename their East Stand to ‘the Alan Curbishley Stand’, exemplifying his important contributions to the club.

    A fifteen-year stint between 1991 and 2006 represented arguably the most successful period in the club’s post-war history, and certainly the best in modern times.


    While it took 16 years to reveal to the public, this kind of story goes some way to explaining the type of opportunism, emotional intelligence, and frankly, competitively pettiness that made Alan Curbishley such a hero to Charlton supporters.

    Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner hasn’t endured a strong start to the Premier League season with no wins in seven to start to the campaign – and Athletic journalist Carl Anka has aired his fears for the club by stating that the Austrian ‘introduced him to a vibe that he can’t maintain’ after their strong end to last season.




    The Eagles tasted defeat against Liverpool in a 1-0 loss on home soil to continue their winless start to the top-flight campaign, and although defeat would perhaps have been expected against the Reds, it has done little to alleviate the fears of fans who have yet to see them victorious in the Premier League this season. Losses to expected bottom-half sides in Everton and Brentford alongside a draw with Leicester City means that the club are struggling in the relegation zone – and The Athletic journalist Anka has shared his worries for Glasner’s men after their strong run of form last season.

    And posting on X (formerly Twitter), Anka aired his fears for Palace after their superb end to the previous campaign – stating that the Eagles ‘cannot maintain’ the form shown in Spring after some poor outings this time around. He said:

    “There’s a lot of mitigating factors, but I fear that Oliver Glasner introduced me to a vibe last season that he can no longer maintain…”

    Palace Have Enough Quality to Survive

    Glasner took over in February when Palace were 15th in the table and had slight relegation woes, and although he won his opening game, the south London outfit went five games without a win to continue their poor form.


    However, a late run to the season end saw them win six of their last seven games to finish in the top-half, with stars such as Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta especially impressing to give fans hope over the summer.

    Olise moved to Bayern Munich in a £50million deal, but the majority of their young squad has been kept together – barring the sale of star defence Joachim Andersen to Fulham.


    Palace bought well with the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Trevoh Chalobah and Maxence Lacroix joining the club late on in the window, but it could take time for their new stars to blossom at Selhurst Park. However, once they do click, there is more than enough Premier League quality for them to survive and kick on into the season and potentially record a top-half finish as they did last season with a revival into the second half of the campaign – especially if stars such as Eze and Mateta can get firing in the final third.

As per the Guinness World Records, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, built in 1984, is the largest residential palace in the world, covering an exorbitant area of 200,000 square metres. The Sultan also owns a private zoo, housing 30 Bengal tigers and various bird species.
