    As soon as the blindfold comes off, the birthday girl is greeted by laughter and cheers from her family. The room is filled with Subway-inspired decorations. On the table, we can spot an impressive feast – cut veggies, sandwiches, cookies and more. Her reaction is pure delight. “I’m so excited!” she says. Her eyes instantly light as she spots the centrepiece of the party – a giant sub that sits on the table. But there’s a twist – this massive sub isn’t what it seems. “Is this a cake?” she asks. A family member proudly responds, “Yes, isn’t it insane?” Realising the hyperrealistic cake, the birthday girl exclaims, “Wow, it looks like a sandwich.”

    The video then goes on to show the family getting in on the fun, assembling their own sub sandwiches, with even the dad wearing a Subway cap. The clip was shared on social media by the birthday girl, who captioned it, “Posting this here since it went low-key viral on TikTok.” She also tagged Subway. A text overlay on the clip reads, “My parents surprised me for my 21st birthday with a Subway-inspired party.”

    GenZs who don’t pay their parents’ bills

    For a majority of Kenyans in their 40s, 50s or 60s, sending money back home is almost a non-negotiable duty. Once they start earning, they take over the financial burden of paying their parents’ bills, be it hospital, food, or buying a new mobile phone.

    However, a new generation is emerging that has no qualms about cutting financial ties with their parents. Some Gen Zs are questioning this obligation and even open talks with their parents over why they ought to give them money. And if they give, it is a loan that ought to be refunded.

    In many ways, these Gen Zers are better off than their parents were 30 years ago, but fewer are supporting their parents financially.

    Maria Chege, a UX designer, is among those who have cut financial ties with her family. She says it is something she had to do, although it has strained relations with her relatives.

    “I started making money young, and they expected me to provide for the whole family. It is like my parents sat back and left me to pay for all the bills once I started working. I have eight siblings and I am the eldest. I reached a point where I drew the line and stopped providing when I realised that they were taking advantage of me,” the 27-year-old says.

    They then pulled the ‘you’ll be cursed’ card. “My mom said I had to send money to my father to avoid a curse. But when I started having salary delays, I noticed they did not care about me and nobody checked up on me. This is what annoyed me.”

    Maria feels that parents should take responsibility for raising their own children. “I crave a relationship with my family, but not at the expense of my mental health,” she says. She vows not to burden her future children with the exact expectations.

    Macrine Awuor, a 23-year-old, admits that the financial reliance, often referred to as paying ‘black tax’, can be mentally draining. “Most of our parents don’t understand that we don’t have to give them money. It should come from the heart. If a child wants to give, they will. The idea that it’s a must doesn’t sit well.”

    However, she has not managed to do away with the financial obligation.

    She says even for some Gen Zs, it is not as easy to break free from the black tax obligation, especially when parents argue, “they made sacrifices for us to have better lives.”

    “Maybe with our children, we can say that they won’t have to take care of us. However, many of us Gen Zs still have to provide for our parents. You can’t live a good life in the city while your parents languish in poverty in the village,” she says.

    For Macrine, though, she discussed the amount to send back home.

    Send money

    “When we had the conversation, dad told me that I don’t have to send money. He said I should help myself first before helping them,” she says, adding, “At first, I thought I’d never send money, but after he said that, I realised I should. He may have said though, but I wondered if he felt differently. The idea of people depending on me made me want to not send money home.”

    “I’ve come to realise sending money back home is both a burden and an obligation for me. It’s a burden because when I don’t send them the money, it will become an issue. At the same time, I feel it’s my obligation because they took care of me, and I never lacked for anything growing up,” she adds.

    Financial demands

    Sabina Otieno, a 24-year-old, already drained by the financial demands of her family, says for some Gen Zers, the ultimate dilemma is determining reality versus a desire to quit supporting. Is there really a choice?

    Sabina was raised in two homes. “I grew up in an orphanage because my mom couldn’t take care of all her six children. I was sent to the orphanage from the age of eight till adulthood, but I kept ties with my mom and siblings. The thing with society is that it expects us to take care of our families, even when we can’t take care of ourselves. I remember that when at the university, I would strain, saving the little pocket money that I had to ensure that at the end of the month, I could get some money to send to my mother,” the media scientist graduate says.

    When she got her first job, it did not matter that she was not earning enough; the orphanage and her mother came calling.

    “My first job was as an intern at a call centre with low pay. Even then, my mom would call me for help, counting tens of expenses at home. I love her, and I understand the situation, but I was being paid only Sh15,000 at the time. After deducting transport and lunch, I had barely anything left. On top of this, the orphanage expected me to pay a ‘tithe’. At the orphanage, there is a policy that once you start making money, you are supposed to give back 10 percent of your salary. I remember when I started at the call centre, I got a message reminding me about the policy. I understood my obligation, but I wasn’t in a position to do it. I tried to explain this to them, but I was still told I had to make a sacrifice.”

    Sabina left the call centre and took up an unpaid internship. Even then, she is still expected to provide for her mom.

    “My mom calls me for money, and though I am surviving on savings and small tokens, I still need to send her something. I can’t remember the last time I ate lunch at work because I have to get by with the little I have. It doesn’t sit well with me that I must sacrifice this much, but I feel it’s my responsibility.”

    When asked if she could continue providing once she has a stable income, Sabina says, “I find myself in a dilemma. On one hand, I can’t just sit and watch my mother suffer. On the other hand, I have an orphanage that sacrificed a lot for me. But I also know that I need to build a life for myself. I do not know what to do.”

    If it were the olden days, Sabina says, she would not have even questioned herself. She would have just kept providing for her family, even if it caused a strain on her life. But now she can have these questions. Maria can choose not to send money home and not fear the repercussions, but for Sabina, it is the still, small voice that speaks to her when she is about to do something wrong that makes her keep giving. She has not managed to silence her conscience.

    Sociologists’ take

    Sociologists argue there are reasons why Gen Zs find it easy to cut the black tax chain. Some of their parents are still financially capable of surviving in retirement because they are more educated than the older Baby Boomers, who have little to no source of livelihood and have to fully rely on their children. This makes it difficult for the children to understand when to actually help because wealthy parents never really teach their children, beginning at a young age, the importance of community involvement, compassion, and empathy.

    Dr Kenneth Ombongi, a senior lecturer at the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Nairobi, points out the generational culture shift. This, he says, has played a big role in GenZ easily seemingly becoming tone-deaf to financially supporting parents.

    “For millennials, once you finished school and started earning, sending money home wasn’t debatable. Children were seen as economic and social assets. But Gen Zs are now having conversations and questioning that obligation. They don’t believe their parents are entitled to their money just because they raised them,” he says,

    He believes the disconnect stems from the different socio-economic environments each generation grew up in. “I still take care of my mother without being asked, but my children don’t share that perspective. Globalisation and digitalism have weakened traditional values, leading to this shift.”

    He blames neoliberalism for encouraging individualism. “At a time when social media platforms have made the world into one small community, the neoliberal content Gen Zs consume, especially from the Global North, doesn’t appreciate African customs. Globalisation has eroded traditional norms, leading to this change in how children view supporting their parents.

    In my culture, I grew up knowing I had to take care of my parents or I’d suffer a curse. But my children don’t fear that because they don’t value parental blessings like we did. They don’t see the connection between my death and taking care of my parents. They are not bothered by parental blessings. Because all the world has told them is that they only need to get a good education, get a good job, or start your business, and there lie your blessings,” Dr Ombongi says.

    With India’s fast-ageing population, the health and happiness of seniors are becoming increasingly important and by 2026, more than 180 million will cross the age of 60 years, of which a considerable number will fight mental health issues like anxiety disorder or depression or even loss of cognitive ability. The 2023 India Ageing Report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) refers to an approximate increase of 279% in the population aged 80-plus years between 2022 and 2050, with high dependence upon elderly women.

    In view of these statistics, following are the ways parents can effectively manage age-related challenges and we can promote a more fulfilling and independent life for seniors –

    1. Physical Activity and Exercise

    In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aanchal Choudhary, Consultant – Internal Medicine at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Noida Extension, shared, “Evidence supports that regular physical activity is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility in seniors. Engaging in a structured exercise program that includes aerobic, resistance and flexibility training has been shown to mitigate the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.”

    Bringing her expertise to the same, Sama Beg, Chief Product Officer at Emoha revealed, “Regular exercise can keep both the body and mind fit. In the case of the elderly, it reduces stress, lightens their mood, and enhances brain function with low-impact exercises like brisk walking, swimming or some gentle Yoga. A caregiver can encourage elders to make physical activities part of their everyday routine by attending exercise classes, working on hobbies, or just going out in nature.”

    2. Nutrition and Diet

    Dr Aanchal Choudhary recommended, “Adequate nutrition is fundamental for maintaining health and preventing age-related decline. A diet characterised by high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is associated with reduced incidence of chronic diseases and improved cognitive health.     With India’s fast-ageing population, the health and happiness of seniors are becoming increasingly important and by 2026, more than 180 million will cross the age of 60 years, of which a considerable number will fight mental health issues like anxiety disorder or depression or even loss of cognitive ability. The 2023 India Ageing Report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) refers to an approximate increase of 279% in the population aged 80-plus years between 2022 and 2050, with high dependence upon elderly women.

    In view of these statistics, following are the ways parents can effectively manage age-related challenges and we can promote a more fulfilling and independent life for seniors –

    In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aanchal Choudhary, Consultant – Internal Medicine at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Noida Extension, shared, “Evidence supports that regular physical activity is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility in seniors. Engaging in a structured exercise program that includes aerobic, resistance and flexibility training has been shown to mitigate the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.”

    Bringing her expertise to the same, Sama Beg, Chief Product Officer at Emoha revealed, “Regular exercise can keep both the body and mind fit. In the case of the elderly, it reduces stress, lightens their mood, and enhances brain function with low-impact exercises like brisk walking, swimming or some gentle Yoga. A caregiver can encourage elders to make physical activities part of their everyday routine by attending exercise classes, working on hobbies, or just going out in nature.”

    A rare condor hatched and raised by foster parents in captivity will soon get to live wild

    By all accounts, Milagra the “miracle” California condor shouldn’t be alive today.

    But now at nearly 17 months old, she is one of four of the giant endangered birds who will get to stretch their wings in the wild as part of a release this weekend near the Grand Canyon.

    There is no more appropriate name for a young bird that has managed to survive against all odds. Her mother died from the worst outbreak of avian flu in U.S. history soon after she laid her egg and her father nearly succumbed to the same fate while struggling to incubate the egg alone.

    Milagra, which means miracle in Spanish, was rescued from her nest and hatched in captivity thanks to the care of her foster condor parents.

    The emergency operation was part of a program established some 40 years ago to help bring the birds back from the brink of extinction when their numbers had plummeted to fewer than two dozen.

    The Peregrine Fund and the Bureau of Land Management are streaming the release of Milagra and the others online Saturday from Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim.

    Condors have been released there since 1996. But the annual practice was put on hold last year due to what is known as the “bird flu.” Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza killed 21 condors in the Utah-Arizona flock.

    “This year’s condor release will be especially impactful given the losses we experienced in 2023 from HPAI and lead poisoning,” said Tim Hauck, The Peregrine Fund’s California Condor program director.

    Today, as many as 360 of the birds are estimated to be living in the wild, with some in the Baja of Mexico and most in California, where similar releases continue. More than 200 others live in captivity.

    The largest land bird in North America with a wing-span of 9.5 feet (2.9 meters), condors have been protected in the U.S. as an endangered species since 1967. Many conservationists consider it a miracle any still exist at all.

    Robert Bate, manager of the Vermillion Cliffs monument, said the release is being shared online in real time “so that the scope and reach of this incredible and successful collaborative recovery effort can continue to inspire people worldwide.”

    California condors mate for life with a lifespan up to 60 years and can travel up to 200 miles (322 kilometers) a day, which they have been known to do as they move back and forth between the Grand Canyon and Zion national parks.

    The Peregrine Fund started breeding condors in cooperation with federal wildlife managers in 1993. The first was released into the wild in 1995, and it would be another eight year before the first chick was hatched out of captivity.

    The fund’s biologists typically don’t name the birds they help raise in captivity, identifying them instead with numbers to avoid giving them human characteristics out of respect for the species.

    They made an exception in the case of #1221, aka Milagra. They saw her journey as emblematic of the captive breeding program coming full circle.

    Milagra’s foster father, #27, was hatched in the wild in California in 1983. He was one of the first brought into the program as a nestling when fewer than two dozen were known to still exist worldwide.

    Convinced it was the species’ only hope for survival, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made an unprecedented, risky decision back then to capture the remaining 22 known to exist to launch the breeding program. Over time, it has grown with assistance from the Oregon Zoo, Los Angeles Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

    “Once they realized California condors were great parents in captivity, they started allowing them to raise their own species,” said Leah Esquivel, propagation manager at the fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho.

    Like all California condors in the wild today, Milagra’s biological parents were products of the program.

    Milagra’s mother, #316, laid her softball-sized egg in a cave on the edge of an Arizona cliff in April 2023 — one of her last acts before she succumbed to avian flu. Sick himself, her biological father, #680, did his best to tend to the egg, but prospects for survival dwindled. So, when he made a rare departure from the nest, biologists who had been monitoring sick condors swooped in and snatched the lone egg.

    “(He) was so focused on incubating the egg that he was not leaving to find food and water for himself, risking his own life,” Peregrine Fund spokesperson Jessica Schlarbaum said.

    They stashed the fragile egg in a field incubator and raced 300 miles (480 kilometers) back to Phoenix, not unlike a human transplant team carrying a heart in an ice chest.

    To the amazement of all, the egg hatched.

    Milagra tested negative for the avian flu and spent about a week at the Liberty Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Mesa, Arizona, before she was taken to fund’s breeding facility in Idaho, where the foster parents took her under their wings.

    Esquivel, the propagation manager, said Milagra’s foster mother, #59, has raised eight nestlings in her lifetime.

    Esquivel described #59 as unique. While the bird never mates, she goes through all the other breeding motions each year and lays an egg.

    “Her eggs are obviously infertile, but since she is a great mother, we use her and her mate to raise young,” Esquivel said. “We just swap the infertile egg out with a dummy egg, then place a hatching egg in the nest when we have one available for her.”

    Milagra’s foster dad has sired about 30 young and helped raise nestlings in captivity for years.

    After spending about seven months with foster parents, the youngsters head off to “condor school” in California to learn the basics: eating communally, strengthening muscles for flight and learning to get along with fellow condors.

    For the biologists, recovery partners, volunteers and others who have persevered over the last year, Hauck summed up Saturday’s release of the birds from this year’s graduating class as “a moment of triumph.”

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Parents in California who profit from social media posts featuring their children will be required to set aside some earnings for their minor influencers under a pair of measures signed Thursday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

    California led the nation nearly 80 years ago in setting ground rules to protect child performers from financial abuse, but those regulations needed updating, Newsom said. The existing law covers children working in movies and TV but doesn’t extend to minors making their names on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

    Family-style vlogs, where influencers share details of their daily lives with countless strangers on the internet, have become a popular and lucrative way to earn money for many.

    Besides coordinated dances and funny toddler comments, family vlogs nowadays may share intimate details of their children’s lives — grades, potty training, illnesses, misbehaviors, first periods — for strangers to view. Brand deals featuring the internet’s darlings can reap tens of thousands of dollars per video, but there have been minimal regulations for the “sharenthood” industry, which experts say can cause serious harm to children.

    “A lot has changed since Hollywood’s early days, but here in California, our laser focus on protecting kids from exploitation remains the same,” he said in a statement. “In old Hollywood, child actors were exploited. In 2024, it’s now child influencers. Today, that modern exploitation ends through two new laws to protect young influencers on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other social media platforms.”

    The California laws protecting child social media influencers follow the first-in-the-nation legislation in Illinois that took effect this July. The California measures apply to all children under 18, while the Illinois law covers those under 16.

    The California measures, which received overwhelming bipartisan support, require parents and guardians who monetize their children’s online presence to establish a trust for the starlets. Parents will have to keep records of how many minutes the children appear in their online content and how much money they earn from those posts, among other things.

    The laws entitle child influencers to a percentage of earnings based on how often they appear on video blogs or online content that generates at least 10 cents per view. The children could sue their parents for failing to do so.

    Children employed as content creators on platforms such as YouTube will also have at least 15% of their earnings deposited in a trust for when they turn 18. An existing state law has provided such protection to child actors since 1939 after a silent film-era child actor Jackie Coogan sued his parents for squandering his earnings.

    The new laws will take effect next year.

    The laws have the support from The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or, SAG-AFTRA, and singer Demi Lovato, a former child star who has spoken publicly about child performers abuse.

    “In order to build a better future for the next generation of child stars, we need to put protections in place for minors working in the digital space,” Lovato said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Governor Newsom for taking action with this update to the Coogan Law that will ensure children featured on social media are granted agency when they come of age and are properly compensated for the use of their name and likeness.”

    The new laws protecting child influencers are part of ongoing efforts by Newsom to address the mental health impacts of social media on children. Newsom earlier this month also signed a bill to curb student phone access at schools and ban social media platforms from knowingly providing addictive feeds to children without parental consent.
