The Moorhead Spuds boys hockey team played their home opener Saturday against Grand Rapids at the Moorhead Sports Center. Before they played, the team, family, and friends honored their late team manager,
. Monshaugen unexpectedly passed away in his sleep on March 19, 2024, from an undiagnosed heart issue, later found to be spontaneous aortic dissection. He was 16 years old.
The team took the ice for warm-up wearing orange jerseys with Monshaugen’s last name on the back. The jerseys also have a patch on the arm with the Monshaugen’s initials, and stickers with his initials will be worn on the helmets of the players as well.
After warm-up, team managers Graden Quade and Jake Franklin presented jerseys to Monshaugen’s family. Those taking part in the ceremony were Cory Monshaugen, Ethan’s dad, his brothers Nolan (15), Cam (12), mom Jenna (Marcus) Askvig, and sisters Quinn (8), Eden (4), and Isla (2).
The team managers gave the players roses that they gave to the family. They shook hands and hugged. Nolan made the ceremonial puck drop with his brother Cam with him.
In the players box hung a jersey with Monshaugen’s last name and the number 23. It will hang there for Spuds home games this season.
The Spuds defeated Grand Rapids 4-3 in overtime with a goal by Brooks Cullen.

Before the trophies, before they were famous, and before photos of these iconic athletes were taken over and over again came their high school yearbooks, where they posed for pictures alongside their classmates.
These pictures came before the paparazzi followed them around and before photographers were assigned to snap their every movement on the court and elsewhere.
The well-known faces for their athletic careers include a Super Bowl winner, one of the premier tennis players in history, and a basketball legend.
The quintet below have been involved in some of the grandest moments in sports history, representing both their teams and their country.
Even some of the most famous faces of went to high school before their incredible success, each from the class of 1979.
Can you name who these athletes are by their high school yearbook photos?
This legend did not keep the big hair for long after this yearbook photo from 1979 was taken
Alongside playing football as his main sports, this athlete was involved in baseball in high school
Dan Marino is widely regarded as the best quarterback of all-time to never win a Super Bowl
Dan Marino
The Miami Dolphins legend did not keep the big poufy hair for long after this yearbook photo from 1979 was taken.
Marino was an All-American at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and stayed in town to play college football for Pitt.
After staying for his senior season with the Panthers, Marino barely stayed a first-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 1983.
Marino is widely regarded as the best quarterback of all-time to never win a Super Bowl, having only appeared in the NFL’s biggest game once, during his second professional season.
Marino officially retired from football in 1999 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
Since 2014, he has been a special advisor to the Dolphins.
One of the greatest track and field stars of all-time also smiled big for his yearbook picture

Lewis ended up winning the long jump at four straight Summer Olympics, his last in 1996
Carl Lewis
One of the greatest track and field stars of all-time had to get his reps in somewhere before dominating on the world stage for over a decade.
Lewis was a star at Willingboro High School, located in a Philadelphia suburb in south New Jersey.
His first Olympic success came five years after graduation, winning four gold medals at the Los Angeles Olympics.
Lewis would have competed as a 19-year-old in the 1980 Olympics if the United States and dozens of other countries did not boycott the games.
Lewis ended up winning the long jump at four straight Summer Olympics, one of six athletes in history to pull off that feat.
The former sprinter is now 63 years old and is currently the head track and field coach at Houston.
This was taken three years before ‘The Play’, where he was Stanford’s quarterback in 1982
More than four decades ago at Granada Hills High School in California, he was the starter
Elway’s post-football career had him involved with the Broncos as a member of their front office
John Elway
The Denver Broncos’ best quarterback of all-time nearly looks the same in this photo from 45 years ago at Granada Hills High School in California.
It was taken three years before ‘The Play’, where Elway was Stanford’s quarterback in 1982.
Elway was the top overall draft pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, 26 picks ahead of Marino, to the Broncos, where he had to wait over a dozen years to win a Super Bowl.
Yet, Elway is best remembered for his late career triumphs in 1998 and 1999, winning back-to-back Super Bowls after a long period without one for the AFC.
Elway’s post-football career also had him involved with the Broncos as a member of their front office from 2011 through 2021.
Recently, Elway appeared as the ‘Leaf Sheep’ on ‘The Masked Singer’ and as eliminated in the season premiere in September.
One of the best basketball players of all-time was one of the top basketball prospects of 1979
Before he was a bad-boy Piston, Thomas was a younger bad boy at St. Joseph High School
Thomas spent his entire NBA career in Detroit, making a dozen straight NBA All-Star games
Isiah Thomas
Before he was a bad-boy Detroit Piston, Thomas was a younger bad boy at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Illinois.
Thomas played for Bob Knight at Indiana and was one of the legendary coach’s biggest stars in Bloomington.
After being drafted No 2 overall in the 1981, Thomas spent his entire NBA career in Detroit, making a dozen straight All-Star games from 1982 through 1993.
Thomas tried his hand at coaching after retiring from the NBA, first with the Indiana Pacers.
The lifetime Piston then coached for the rival Knicks before his only stint as a college coach at FIU.
Thomas’ career as a coach was rather uneventful, never leading any of his teams to much success.
Arguably one of the most underrated athletes of the 20th century is this doubles tennis’ specialist
She may be known as the doubles partner of Martina Navratilova, winning 21 Grand Slam titles
Shriver has had a long-standing broadcasting career after her retirement from tennis in 1997
Pam Shriver
Arguably one of the most underrated athletes of the 20th century, who had the most success of her professional career as Martina Navratilova’s doubles partner, is Shriver.
She attended the McDonogh School in the Baltimore suburbs and had already appeared in a major-tournament final by the time she got her diploma.
That was the 1978 US Open against Chris Evert. Shriver lost the next eight Grand Slam semifinals she played in, four coming to Navratilova herself.
Her final appearance in a Grand Slam tournament was the 1996 US Open, where she lost in the first round.
Shriver did win 21 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles and one mixed doubles title.
Shriver may now be best known for her broadcasting career, with many appearances for ESPN.

Images that depict the faces of girls with nude bodies have led to the departure of leaders from a private school in Pennsylvania, prompted a student protest and triggered a criminal investigation.
A juvenile suspect was “removed from” Lancaster Country Day School and his cellphone was seized by investigators in August, Susquehanna Regional Police Department Detective Laurel Bair said Tuesday.
It’s the latest example of how the use of artificial intelligence to create or manipulate images with sexual content has become a concern, including within school settings.
U.S. law enforcement has been cracking down on graphic depictions of computer-generated children as well as manipulated photos of real ones. The Justice Department says it’s pursuing those who exploit AI tools and states are racing to enact laws to address the problem.
A new Pennsylvania state law that takes effect late next month explicitly criminalizes making or disseminating AI-generated child sexual abuse material.
And police in South Korea are on a seven-month push to combat explicit deepfake content, with tougher penalties, expanded use of undercover officers and increased regulation of social media. Concerns in South Korea deepened after unconfirmed lists of schools with victims spread earlier this year.
As part of the police investigation into what the Lancaster Country Day School describes as “disturbing AI generated photographs,” a search warrant was used this summer to obtain an iPhone 11 linked to a 15-year-old, according to court records. The records do not identify the teen.
A woman told police that her daughter said a fellow student had been “taking photographs of students and using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to portray the female juvenile students as being nude,” according to a probable cause affidavit used to apply for the search warrant.
Matt Micciche, then the head of the school, told police the school had received a complaint about the photos in November 2023 through the Safe2Say Something program but the suspect, identified by his initials, denied the allegations, according to Bair’s affidavit.
When some parents became aware of the photos in May, Bair wrote, they also learned that the “AI nude photographs” had been posted in a chat room.
Bair, leading the investigation because the suspect lives in the Susquehanna Regional Police Department’s territory, said there has been shock at the school “that this is even occurring and that it happened within their small community.” She declined to say how many girls had been shown in the images but added that more information about the case will likely be made public in the coming two weeks.
Erik Yabor, a spokesperson for Lancaster District Attorney Heather Adams, said Tuesday that Lancaster County prosecutors had no comment about the ongoing investigation.
A spokesperson for Attorney General Michelle Henry’s office said the agency was not able to talk about specific tips or reports made to the Safe2Say Something platform, which fields anonymous reports from students and others about safety threats.
“Generally speaking, our team intakes the tips and sends them to the respective law enforcement or school personnel for review,” Brett Hambright said. “We have confirmed that was done regarding the matter you inquired about.”
LNP in Lancaster reported that most of Lancaster Country Day’s high-school age students held a walkout on Friday, Nov. 8, marching around the campus and chanting, “Hear us. Acknowledge us. See us.” School was canceled on Monday.
LNP said the school indicated on Friday that it had “parted ways” with Micciche and that board president Angela Ang-Alhadeff had stepped down. The Associated Press left phone messages seeking comment with both of them on Tuesday. A letter addressed to the school community Monday by the Lancaster Country Day Board of Trustees said it was working to replace them and was “still in the process of finalizing the resolution to the case.”
“What we can say is that over the course of the past week the board was made aware of information that led us to the decision to resolve the matter,” the board wrote, including acting “in the best interests of the girls who have been impacted and in the best interest of the school long term.”
The school said counseling has been offered to students and the institution is reviewing reporting procedures, safety practices and other policies regarding student safety.
FARGO — North Dakota State scored the game’s first 28 points and rolled to a 59-21 victory against Missouri State on Saturday in Missouri Valley Football Conference play before 14,679 fans at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.
The Bison honor 25 seniors prior to the game, including defensive tackle Eli Mostaert.
“It’s a surreal moment for me and the whole senior class,” Mostaert said.
The top-ranked Bison (10-1, 7-0 MVFC) have won 10 consecutive games and clinched at least a share of the conference championship with one game remaining in the regular season. NDSU plays next Saturday at the University of South Dakota.
The Bison can win the MVFC title outright with a win against the Coyotes.
Bison senior quarterback Cam Miller threw four touchdown passes in the first half to help NDSU build a 35-14 halftime lead. Miller completed 17 of 24 passes for 155 yards for the game.
