Record 70MILLION votes cast in prestigious Dubai Globe Soccer Awards poll with 10 days still to go – as four Premier League players battle the world’s best for player of the year honour

A whopping 70 million votes have been cast in the Beyond Developments Globe Soccer Dubai Awards with 10 days of polling still to go, equalling last year’s record figure already.

The competition will take place alongside the 19th Dubai International Sports Conference, at Atlantis, The Palm in partnership and support with Dubai Sports Council, on December 27.

Four Premier League stars – Rodri, Cole Palmer, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah – have made it into the shortlist of 18 competitors vying for the Best Men’s Player prize at the glittering gala after half of the league’s representation was cut following the first round of voting.

Polling opened two weeks ago to football fans across the world. They have until December 10 to have their say and the winners will be determined by a combination of fan votes and the Globe Soccer Jury, made up of legendary names such as Marcello Lippi, Francesco Totti, Iker Casillas and Luis Figo.

Last year, some 70 million people from more than 225 countries and territories cast their vote.

But this figure has already been matched just halfway into the ballot period this time round as fans look to have their say on the players of the year from both the men and women’s games.

The first period of polling closed on Monday and more than twice as many votes were cast as at the same point last year.

Fans’ votes, received from more than 200 countries across the world, helped determine the finalists across eight of the 12 main categories.

Additionally, the Globe Soccer mobile app has surpassed 1.5 million downloads, underlining the event’s global appeal.

Man City’s Rodri will be hoping to replicate his triumph at the Ballon d’Or in Paris last month after winning the Premier League with his club and Euro 2024 with Spain.

His teammate Haaland scooped up the prize in Dubai in 2023 and is in with a shout this year after bagging 34 goals.

Palmer, meanwhile, carried Chelsea on his back last campaign before scoring a memorable goal in the Euro final against Spain. He already has seven goals in 11 Premier League appearances this season.

Salah’s future at Liverpool might be uncertain but his importance to Arne Slot’s side is not, as the winger’s goals helped the Reds come back from 2-1 down against Southampton on the weekend to secure three points and surge eight points clear at the top of the league.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior has been offered up an opportunity to put his Ballon d’Or snub behind him and end the season with some silverware.

After news broke earlier on the day of the Paris ceremony that the selection panel had chosen Rodri as their victor, Real Madrid and Vinicius decided to pull the plug on their trip to the gala, held at the Theatre du Chatelet.

The Spanish giants had hoped that if their Brazilian forward was not given the nod, right-back Dani Carvajal might be handed the gong after winning La Liga, the Champions League and the Euros.

But when it was leaked today that the Man City man was in fact the winner, Real reacted furiously and not a single club representative was there to watch their team win several honours at the event and their players place highly in the main list.

Carvajal is also in contention at the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards along with teammate and England international Jude Bellingham who secured a league and Champions League double with Los Blancos last season.

Old stalwarts Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, winners of seven men’s player of the year awards at the Dubai event over the years, also make the shortlist for their perfomances at Inter Miami and Al Nassr respectively.

As for best women’s player, Aitana Bonmati will be aiming to follow up her Ballon d’Or nod with another honour here, while English stars Lucy Bronze and Lauren James will be hoping to spring an upset.

When FLW asked Ben who the club’s next player to be cashed in on was in his eyes, and to sum him up in one word, he said: “The best player right now, I think if you take a sort of holistic look at it, would probably be Leaburn.

“The word you’d use would be potential, I think.

“Obviously, he’s just come back from his big injury, which, I think he was out since January last season.

“He’s only just sort of coming back now, but he came off the bench, he was a real handful against Wrexham, scored some goals in the FA Cup, scored some goals in the EFL Trophy.

“As much as we want to get back up to the Premier League, and get back up to the Championship, our model right now is still relying on our academy bringing through good players, and selling them on.

“We haven’t necessarily done that too well, or too frequently (in the) last few years.

“I think, probably, the last big asset we sold would have been Mason Burstow a few years ago.

“It’s good that we’re keeping players at the club.

“Guys like Miles are staying, Tyreece Campbell, Nathan Asiimwe, others of the sort, Karoy Anderson, but Miles, just because of his profile and his size, his speed, his ability in the air, ball at his feet, just feels like if he can hit the heights, or if he can show the signs that he did at points when he broke through, and he’s sort of shown glimpses that he’s now getting up to full fitness, he feels like the next guy, not in the mould of Mason Burstow, but more like a Joe Aribo, or an Ezri Konsa, where it is big clubs sniffing around.

“He’s going straight into, maybe not straight into first-teams, but he feels like one of those guys, who, if he sticks with it, and stays with his current trajectory, he could easily be a sort of, maybe not a top, but a lower to mid-table Premier League striker, I think.

“I think he still needs to do a lot to prove himself, clearly that injury has slowed things down, and in some ways that suits us, if we can keep him at the club for as long as we can, but he feels like the next big thing, and I think if we play it right, and use him well, I think he can do well for us and then be someone that we sell on.”

It is no surprise that Ben has picked out Leaburn as an Addicks talent who could be the next to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Gomez and Aribo, and join a top-flight club.

For a player who is just 20-years-old, the forward boasts a wealth of experience, as he made 13 appearances in League One last season, and 35 the season before.

Leaburn also poses a clear threat, as he notched 12 goals and three assists during the 2022/23 third tier campaign in which he made 35 outings, but last season was hampered by injury, with a hamstring problem ruling him out from December until the end of the season.

Unrivalled in the Premier League – The numbers behind Guardiola’s dominance of English football

Pep Guardiola’s reign over the Premier League seems set to continue, with numerous reports in England suggesting that the Manchester City manager is set to sign a one-year extension to his contract with the club. The Spaniard currently has a deal that runs until the end of this season, but on Tuesday the Athletic reported that Guardiola had agreed to a one-year extension of his current deal, along with the option to add an additional year. Should the Man City boss stay for the two further years, it would take his time at the English club to over a decade in charge of the Premier League champions.

In no uncertain terms, Guardiola’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium has heralded a new era of Premier League football that has seen Man City dominate the English top-flight. In his first eight seasons at the club, Guardiola won the league title six times and remains strong favourites to make it a fifth, consecutive success with this current league campaign. In that time Guardiola has also won two FA Cups, four English League Cups and Man City’s first ever Champions League in 2023. But it is undoubtedly in the Premier League where Man City have eviscerated their rivals and where English football fans are likely to see their dominance continue under Guardiola for the next two or three seasons.

While league trophies are the only real yardstick by which Man City’s success in the league will be compared to their rivals, a glance at the points amassed since 2016 really underlines the point. The graphic above illustrates the total points accumulated by Premier League clubs since Guardiola arrived at the start of the 2016/17 season. During this period, Man City have dominated the league with 739 points, showcasing their consistency and superiority under Guardiola’s tactical mastery. Liverpool, despite their impressive performances during this era, including winning the league in 2019-20, trail behind with 685 points. Arsenal comes in third with 586 points, reflecting their resurgence in recent seasons as a competitive force under Mikel Arteta.

Further down the list, Tottenham and Chelsea are tied with 568 points, although both clubs have faced managerial changes and periods of inconsistency. Manchester United, despite being a traditionally dominant club, have only managed 564 points, highlighting their struggles to maintain stability and performance since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Outside of the traditional “big six,” Everton, West Ham, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace round out the top ten, with points ranging from 405 to 370, reflecting their status as competitive mid-table teams over the last several seasons.

When we then compare Guardiola to his contemporaries in the dugout based on points won since he arrived in England, it once again showcases how he has dominated this era of the Premier League. As the graphic above illustrates, the Man City manager leads by a significant margin, accumulating 739 points in 315 games. This figure is unparalleled, underscoring his consistent dominance and success in the league. Jürgen Klopp follows in second place with 657 points from 304 games, reflecting his competitive tenure but still trailing Guardiola by 82 points despite managing fewer matches.

The graphic also showcases the achievements of other managers, such as Eddie Howe and Arteta, who have earned 362 and 355 points, respectively. Both managers have risen in prominence during Guardiola’s era, albeit with far fewer games than the likes of Klopp or Sean Dyche. Dyche, known for his work with Burnley and Everton, has managed 330 points across 286 games, proving his ability to compete in the league despite often working with limited resources. The data also highlights the contrasting fortunes of seasoned names like José Mourinho and Antonio Conte, who have also accumulated notable points but managed fewer games during this period due to their inability to hold down long-term jobs like Guardiola has done at Man City.

Whichever way we look at the data, there’s really no way of avoiding the fact that no club or manager has come close to the remarkable success that Man City and Guardiola have amassed since 2016. Of course, the Etihad side have done exactly this with untold fortunes spent in the transfer market and on player wages, leading to Man City exerting a financial might that most of their rivals could only dream of. But Guardiola has turned that financial advantage into a degree of sporting success that few other managers in the world could even think of emulating. And with an extension to his current contract now in place, it seems likely that the Spaniard’s dominance of the Premier League is set to rumble on for the foreseeable future.

Pensioner swindled out of £340K by fraudster who wanted ‘to live Premier League lifestyle’

A pensioner was tricked into handing over £340,000 to a semi-professional footballer turned fraudster who wanted to live a “Premier League lifestyle”.

Abdul Ibraheem, 36, used the money swindled from 84-year-old Alan Potter on first class flights, a stint living in a £3million mansion, and an £800 bonsai tree.

The 36-year-old also conned a letting agent out of another £100,000 – taking deceitful gains to £447,700.

Ibraheem convinced the 84-year-old to sign over his bank cards and give him more than £200,000, Potter had previously been the victim of a boiler room scam in 2022 and Ibraheem told him that he could recover the money for a fee.

This first began with a payment of £50,000, however this quickly grew to over £300,000, with the pensioner being left on “the verge of possible bankruptcy” and fearing that he may need to sell his home.

Ibraheem spent the fraudulent money on a number of high-end goods, including a £14,000 piano, a £3,000 marble kitchen, and a limited edition Banksy print.

He also took his family on a luxury holiday to Greece, flew first class to Ibiza and joined a private members club before police clocked on and raided his home.

Ibraheem claimed to be a semi-professional footballer and coach on the books of Chelsea FC.

The 36-year-old admitted to nine charges with another two left on file at Lewes Crown Court in Brighton and was jailed for more than five years in March of this year.

However, a proceeds of crime hearing has now been told that only £34,651 has been recovered from Ibraheem to pay back Potter and the letting agent.

Judge Mark Van Der Zwart told Ibraheem at a hearing in Hove: “From the available amount, compensation has to be made from the confiscated money.”

In his victim impact statement, Potter said: “I found him persuasive and believable in everything he said.

“When the full realisation of his activities and the lifestyle he was living on my money fully came home to me, I was embarrassed.”

Nicholas Mather for the Crown said that the 36-year-old exploited vulnerable people by stealing from them in a professional manner.

“Knowing Mr Potter had previously been the victim of fraud, the defendant used the money extracted from Mr Potter to fund his own lavish lifestyle. He benefited substantially from his fraudulent conduct.”

Mather added: “He was not taking money to give to others. He was benefiting and living a luxury lifestyle due to his fraudulent activity.”

Nottingham Forest and a Premier League rise no one saw coming | Soccer

RETURN OF THE JEDI

Although they enjoyed the luxury of a six-point buffer zone, Nottingham Forest finished just one place above the relegation zone when the last season ended in May. One of the campaign’s top-tier b@nter clubs, they made an outcast of their captain and club legend Joe Worrall, all the better to free up dressing-room space for at least one of the 4,189 new signings they’d made before it began. In December they sacked their gaffer and replaced him with an apparently beaten managerial docket famously described on a certain podcast not a million miles from here as looking like “a sad Jedi” following his disastrous, short reign at Spurs. They were also docked four points for financial shenanigans and that’s before you get to the very public diatribe questioning the PGMOL’s integrity because one of their video assistant referees happened to be a Luton fan, a Social Media Disgrace that would ultimately cost them £750,000.

Whatever various Forest-supporting prophets of the past currently harrumphing with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight now their team is flying so high might claim, there was no earthly reason for anyone doing season previews in August to think the club owned by Evangelos Marinakis and managed by Nuno Espírito Santo would be any less chaotic this time around. While some so-called experts tipped Forest for relegation at the start of the season, other more prescient soothsayers suggested they might scale the dizzy heights of 15th. It’s still early doors, of course, but in the extremely unlikely event anyone out there thought they might be in third place with more than a quarter of the season played, they wisely kept their counsel for fear of being thought of as completely deranged.

Apart from their one defeat against Fulham, which prompted a flurry of fines and suspensions for the sporting grace with which it was accepted, Forest are otherwise unbeaten, banging in goals for fun and boast the second tightest defence in the league. Much of the credit for Forest’s defensive vigour must go to Nikola Milenkovic, a £12m arrival from Fiorentina whose arrival prompted little more than shoulder-shrugs and Google searches but is already shaping up to be a wonderful deal. While up front few can have expected Chris Wood to be more thoroughbred than cart-horse with his late challenge for the Ballon d’Or.

Elsewhere on the pitch Morgan Gibbs-White has excelled even if his recent spell on the Naughty Step has proved his side have plenty of other star-turns in reserve, while in the absence of Worrall, who is now at Burnley, Ryan Yates (and to a lesser extent Zach Abbott) have continued their side’s quite astonishing record of having a local academy graduate in every matchday squad going back 83 years, a run of – count ‘em – 4,077 games. With speculative talk inevitably and almost certainly prematurely turning to whether this Forest side can “do a Leicester”, one suspects their fans will happily wait until they get another 20-odd points on the board to secure safety before they even entertain the fanciful notion of emulating “that lot” from just up the road.

Re: harsh red cards (yesterday’s Football Daily letters). Back in (I think) 2007, I copped a red while running the line. As a first-team player, we had a linesman roster for the first half of the reserves game and I was on duty. At a corner (my club attacking), the inswinger was easily claimed by the keeper, a good metre inside the field of play. The comically inept referee decided, from his viewpoint at the top of the box, that the ball had crossed the line and awarded another corner. Understandably, the opposition looked at me with bewilderment. Upon explanation that my flag was down and I’d talk to the referee, said official pulled me aside and asked why I didn’t raise my flag for a ball that was clearly out. When I said something to the effect of ‘well … because it wasn’t’, he gave me a yellow for dissent. My instantaneous ‘are you joking?’ earned me an instantaneous second yellow” – Jarrod Prosser.

At university, my teammate Henry Mance had his name taken for, probably, a typically rustic challenge. ‘Mance … as in romance,’ he helpfully offered the referee. The card was immediately upgraded to a more romantic red” – Paul Reeve.

Arsenal sporting director Edu to make shock move to Premier League rivals | Football

Arsenal sporting director Edu is to leave in a huge blow for the Gunners, set to join Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs which includes Nottingham Forest.

The Brazilian rejoined the club he used to play for from 2001-05 in 2019 as technical director and stepped up to sporting director in November 2022.

The 46-year-old has been credited with securing big signings of players such as Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, while his connections in his home country helped snap up the previously unknown Gabriel Martinelli.

The Daily Mail report that talks have been held between Edu and the Arsenal hierarchy but the Brazilian has decided to move on.

The Independent have since reported that he is making a surprise move to link up with the Marinakis network of Forest, Oympiacos and Rio Ave.

The unexpected move is reportedly driven by Edu wanting to become CEO at Arsenal and being offered that position at the Marinakis-owned group.

Edu was alongside Mikel Arteta in September as the Spaniard signed a new contract with the club and spoke about the long-term future under the manager.

‘We are really happy that Mikel has signed a new long-term contract,’ said the Brazilian.

‘For me, there are some elements in football which I will always give a lot of attention. When I joined, I looked at the squad balance, the positions, the age of the group. There are three elements that you have to be really aware of.

‘First of all, we have to see the age of the player. Then you have to see the salary of the player. And third you have to see the performance of the player.

‘If you have a player over 26 or 27 years, you need attention. If his salary is high, you need attention. And if he is not performing, you are dead.

‘Let’s come back… If you have a player, 27 years old or 28, on a big salary, but he is performing, you can accept it. What you cannot accept is if you have those three elements and the player is over 28.

‘You start to become uncomfortable and it is better for you to move them on – because maybe this player is blocking someone younger, an asset who could help you.

‘When I came to Arsenal, I saw all the squad, with respect, almost everyone was over 26, 27, on big salaries and not performing. If you have those three elements, which club in the world wants to come here and buy one of our players? No-one.

‘So how do you deal with that situation? You have to be strong and sometimes you have to make decisions. You can go strong and try to let those players go or your project is going to take, instead of three or four years, maybe seven, eight or nine.

INSIDE SPORT: Premier League fears grow that leading clubs will snub USA summer tournament, while Erik ten Hag breaks bread with media he accused of spreading ‘fairytales and lies’

No Premier League club has yet committed to the second Summer Series in the promised land of the United States.

Insiders say a number of ‘good discussions’ are ongoing over the pre-season tournament and add that they are confident of a positive outcome, as the clock continues to tick towards next July.

However, the lack of any confirmation will do little to ease fears that the top flight’s big guns will shun the competition.

A number of issues are at play. Champions Manchester City and Chelsea – who enjoy huge support in the US – are unavailable thanks to their participation in the Club World Cup (ironically being held across the US).

Then there is the problem of money, and how the top-flight can make this an attractive option for the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, who will not be short of offers.

An intriguing subplot – given the current civil war gripping the league – is the impact any additional revenues would have on a club’s position within the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and whether it is fair that some should benefit in that regard from a tournament organised by the league itself.

It has also been reported that the Premier League is considering a sliding scale, which would see United and Liverpool form part of a four or six-team tournament with £6.3m each up for grabs.

Smaller clubs could expect less based on their share of the US market. Again, this is unlikely to go down well. United and Liverpool may well believe they could drive more revenue should they arrange their own matches while smaller clubs may well have their noses put out of joint.

To make matters worse, FIFA have now revealed Inter Miami will take part in their CWC, despite the fact that the MLS play-offs are yet to start. They have seemingly acted now to ensure Lionel Messi features, whether Miami – who finished top of the Eastern Conference – go on to be crowned champions or not. The competition for eyeballs in the US ahead of the World Cup is intense.

EFL meeting brought forward as Championship clubs consider ticket cap

Inside Sport has learned that the EFL’s annual summer meeting has been brought forward to February – in an attempt to tackle the various financial issues facing the game. Championship clubs will discuss new spending regulations while those in Leagues One and Two will examine amendments to existing arrangements.

While the summer meeting will still take place, it is hoped that the summit will be used as a rubber-stamping exercise. The lack of a redistribution deal with the Premier League and the forthcoming football regulator will also be high on the agenda.

It can also be disclosed that Championship clubs are considering mirroring the Premier League and introducing a £30 cap on tickets for away supporters. A decision is expected early in the new year, but only a small number are thought to be against the move.

Welsh clubs consider new cup territory

There is a growing feeling that clubs across the Severn who compete in the English league are attempting to ‘have their Welsh cake and eat it’, as one exec put it.

Aside from the fact such qualification could wreak havoc with the Championship fixture calendar, there is also the argument that the revenues European qualification would bring would put give the side in question an unfair advantage over their English counterparts.

Sharing of such revenues was quickly dismissed on a recent call. ‘They’re more than welcome to play in the Welsh Cup – as long as they then go and play in the Welsh League,’ said another official.

A CROOKED mum stole up to £10,000 from charity to fund her “WAG lifestyle” after claiming her son’s dad was a Premier League star.

Olivia Spencer, 29, pocketed donations from well-wishers while working as a clerk for the Manchester Foundation Charity.

The handouts were meant to help patients at children’s hospitals – including a mum who raised £400 when her daughter suffered a brain tumour.

Instead, Spencer instead used the cash to live a lifestyle ”disproportionate” to her means while claiming her son’s dad was an unnamed footballer.

Social media pictures showed Spencer enjoying fancy cocktails and a lavish holiday to America.

Her scheming was only exposed when donors complained they had not received their usual “thank you” notes when dropping off the cash.

Spencer admitted theft by employee but avoided prison and was instead handed a six month suspended sentence.

Manchester Crown Court heard the mum-of-two began her callous plan in October 2018 while fielding money intended for ten hospitals across Greater Manchester.

She and a colleague were meant to sign a receipt book for each donation made then place the cash in a safe.

Prosecutor Miss Denise Fitzpatrick said: “Olivia Spencer received workplace training but after she began her employment, discrepancies in cash donations became apparent and an investigation was undertaken.

“The discrepancies came to light because donors contacted the charity to ask why they had not received a note of thanks for their respective donations and an acknowledgement of receipt. The receipt book was then checked.”

A probe showed Spencer had fielded cash from donors on 21 different occasions but the the charity had no record of the money being received.

Victims included the mum who donated £400 when her sick daughter was treated at at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RCMH).

A local children’s nursery had also raised money with a cake sale, while a primary school that donated £400 got a letter back saying the charity only received £195.

Spencer had also refused to let college students who gave £274 pose for a photo when the cheque was handed in.

Miss Fitzpatrick said: ”Olivia Spencer was placed on restricted duties but she then phoned in and said she was ill due to work-related stress.

“During the investigation it emerged that whilst working at the charity her description of her lifestyle appeared disproportionate to the income she received.

“She told one of her colleagues that a footballer was the father of her son although she never gave the footballer’s name.”

The court heard investigators could only account for £1,236.30 from nine of the 21 suspicious transactions.

Although the total amount of the remaining donations are not known, it is believed the missing money totals more than £10,000.

As well as a suspended sentence, Spencer was ordered to carry out six days of rehabilitation activity and 180 hours of unpaid work.

Sentencing, Mr Recorder Geoffrey Lowe said a jail term would cause her two children to “suffer”.

Tanya Hamid, director of Manchester Foundation Trust Charity, said: “We took immediate action as soon as we realised that cash was missing.

“The investigations led to the employee’s dismissal and the sentence passed today. This sends a strong message that theft or fraud against NHS charities is totally unacceptable.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has continued to support the charity, enabling us to fund excellence in treatment, research and care across our family of hospitals.

“As swift action was taken, we can assure our supporters that this individual has not impacted on our ability to fund life-changing and life-saving projects.”
