  • The ‘Worst in Show’ CES products put your data at risk and cause waste, privacy advocates say

The ‘Worst in Show’ CES products put your data at risk and cause waste, privacy advocates say

LAS VEGAS — So much of the technology showcased at CES includes gadgets made to improve consumers’ lives — whether by leveraging AI to make devices that help people become more efficient, by creating companions to cure loneliness or by providing tools that help people with mental and physical health.

But not all innovation is good, according to a panel of self-described dystopia experts that has judged some products as “Worst in Show.” The award that no company wants to win calls out the “least repairable, least private, and least sustainable products on display.”

“We’re seeing more and more of these things that have basically surveillance technology built into them, and it enables some cool things,” Liz Chamberlain, director of sustainability at the e-commerce site iFixit told The Associated Press. “But it also means that now we’ve got microphones and cameras in our washing machines, refrigerators and that really is an industry-wide problem.”

The fourth annual contest announced its decisions Thursday.

Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, awarded the Ultrahuman Rare Luxury Smart Ring the title of “least repairable.”

The rings, which come in colors like dune and desert sand, cost $2,200. Wiens said the jewelry “looks sleek but hides a major flaw: its battery only lasts 500 charges.” Worse, he said, is the fact that replacing the battery is impossible without destroying the device entirely.

“Luxury items may be fleeting, but two years of use for $2,200 is a new low,” he said.

Bosch’s “Revol” crib uses sensors, cameras and AI that the company says can help monitor vital signs like how an infant is sleeping, their heart and respiratory rates and more. The crib can also rock gently if the baby needs help falling asleep and signal to parents if a blanket or other object is interfering with breathing.

The company says users can how and where their data is stored. Bosch also says the crib can be transformed into a desk as children get older.

But EFF Executive Director Cindy Cohn said the crib preys on parents’ fears and “collects excessive data about babies via a camera, microphone, and even a radar sensor.”

“Parents expect safety and comfort — not surveillance and privacy risks — in their children’s cribs,” she said in the report.

Although AI is everywhere at CES, Stacey Higginbotham, a policy Fellow at Consumer Reports, felt that SoundHound AI’s In-Car Commerce Ecosystem, powered by its Automotive AI, pushes it to unnecessary extremes.

The feature “increases energy consumption, encourages wasteful takeout consumption and distracts drivers—all while adding little value,” Higginbotham said. That landed the in-car system as “least sustainable” on the list.

TP-Link’s Archer BE900 router won for “least secure” of CES. The company is a top-selling router brand in the U.S. But its products are vulnerable to hacking, said Paul Roberts, founder of The Security Ledger.

“By Chinese law, TP-Link must report security flaws to the government before alerting the public, creating a significant national security risk,” he said. “Yet TP-Link showcased its Archer BE900 router at CES without addressing these vulnerabilities.”

The awards also feature a category called “who asked for this?” Top of that list was Samsung’s Bespoke AI Washing Machine, which Nathan Proctor, senior director of U.S. PIRG, a consumer advocacy group, said is filled “with features no one needs,” including the ability to make phone calls.

“These add-ons only make the appliance more expensive, fragile, and harder to repair,” he said.

Gay Gordon-Byrne, executive director of The Repair Association called the LG “AI Home Inside 2.0 Refrigerator with ThinkQ” the worst product overall. The fridge adds “flashy features,” Gordon-Byrne said, including a screen and internet connection.

“But these come at a cost,” Gordon-Byrne said. “Shorter software support, higher energy consumption, and expensive repairs reduce the fridge’s practical lifespan, leaving consumers with an expensive, wasteful gadget.”

  • US hikes tariffs on imports of Chinese solar wafers, polysilicon and tungsten products

US hikes tariffs on imports of Chinese solar wafers, polysilicon and tungsten products

BANGKOK — The Biden administration plans to raise tariffs on solar wafers, polysilicon and some tungsten products from China to protect U.S. clean energy businesses.

The notice from the U.S. Trade Representative’s office said tariffs on Chinese-made solar wafers and polysilicon will rise to 50% and duties on certain tungsten products will increase to 25%, effective on Jan. 1, following a review of Chinese trade practices.

“The tariff increases announced today will further blunt the harmful policies and practices by the People’s Republic of China,” USTR Katharine Tai said in a statement. “These actions will complement the domestic investments made under the Biden-Harris Administration to promote a clean energy economy, while increasing the resilience of critical supply chains.”

Last week, Washington tightened restrictions on Chinese access to advanced semiconductor technology. Beijing responded by banning exports to the U.S. of certain critical minerals needed to make computer chips, such as gallium, germanium and antimony. It also stepped up its controls on graphite exports to the U.S.

China provides a very large share of most of those materials and the United States has been working to secure alternative sources in Africa and other parts of the world.

Tungsten is another strategically vital metal whose production is dominated by China. The U.S. does not produce it. It’s used to make armaments and is also used in x-ray tubes and light bulb filaments, among other industrial applications.

After Beijing announced its ban on exporting gallium and the other materials to the United States, analysts said tungsten was another likely area where China might strike back.

Trade frictions have been escalating ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has voewed to impose 60% tariffs on Chinese goods, among other threats. President Joe Biden has said Trump’s promise of broad tariffs on foreign imports would be a mistake.

His administration has kept in place tariffs that Trump imposed during his first term in office, in some cases raising them further, but says it has a more targetted approach.

The investigation that led the USTR to raise the tariffs on solar panels concluded with a report in May that has prompted increases in tariffs on a range of products including electric vehicles, syringes and needles, medical gloves and facemasks, semiconductors and steel and aluminum products, among others.

  • Report States Indias Ban On Antibiotics In Animal Food Products Critical For AMR Control

Report States Indias Ban On Antibiotics In Animal Food Products Critical For AMR Control

The decision by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to ban the use of some antibiotics in animal food products will help curb the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), according to a new report. In October, the FSSAI banned the use of some antibiotics used in the production of meat, meat products, milk, milk products, poultry, eggs, and aquaculture. The ban in usage of antibiotics will enhance the quality of livestock farming in India.
This regulatory decision is a crucial move to safeguard public health and curb the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which renders certain bacterial infections increasingly difficult to treat with standard medications among consumers, said GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
“Being one of the major producers and exporters of milk, eggs, fish, and poultry meat, India needs to regulate the use of antibiotics during livestock farming and production in order to sustain itself in the global market,” said Susmitha Bynagari, consumer analyst at GlobalData.
Also, the country needs to keep a constant check on the usage of antibiotics in animal production to maintain the quality of the products that are exported. “This ban on the usage of antibiotics in feed using for meat and poultry is also implemented in countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore,” Bynagari added. India has also committed to reduce the usage of antimicrobials used in animal production by 30-50 per cent by 2030.
Indian consumers also prefer healthy products, which is bolstered by a recent GlobalData survey, where 73 per cent of the Indian respondents said that well-being always or often influences while purchasing food and beverage products. This shift in consumer behaviour is driving demand for more sustainable and safer food products, said the report.
“To effectively tackle the issue of AMR, the FSSAI must ensure that the ban on these usage of on antibiotics in animal production is strictly implemented across the country,” said Francis Gabriel Godad, Consumer Business Development Manager at GlobalData. A grassroots approach will be critical to achieving long-term success in reducing antibiotic use in agriculture and ultimately protecting public health, he added.

  • Nvidia rivals focus on building a different kind of chip to power AI products

Nvidia rivals focus on building a different kind of chip to power AI products

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Building the current crop of artificial intelligence chatbots has relied on specialized computer chips pioneered by Nvidia, which cornered the market and made itself the poster child of the AI boom.

But the same qualities that make those graphics processor chips, or GPUs, so effective at creating powerful AI systems from scratch make them less efficient at putting AI products to work.

That’s opened up the AI chip industry to rivals who think they can compete with Nvidia in selling so-called AI inference chips that are more attuned to the day-to-day running of AI tools and designed to reduce some of the huge computing costs of generative AI.

“These companies are seeing opportunity for that kind of specialized hardware,” said Jacob Feldgoise, an analyst at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology. “The broader the adoption of these models, the more compute will be needed for inference and the more demand there will be for inference chips.”

It takes a lot of computing power to make an AI chatbot. It starts with a process called training or pretraining — the “P” in ChatGPT — that involves AI systems “learning” from the patterns of huge troves of data. GPUs are good at doing that work because they can run many calculations at a time on a network of devices in communication with each other.

However, once trained, a generative AI tool still needs chips to do the work — such as when you ask a chatbot to compose a document or generate an image. That’s where inferencing comes in. A trained AI model must take in new information and make inferences from what it already knows to produce a response.

GPUs can do that work, too. But it can be a bit like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

“With training, you’re doing a lot heavier, a lot more work. With inferencing, that’s a lighter weight,” said Forrester analyst Alvin Nguyen.

That’s led startups like Cerebras, Groq and d-Matrix as well as Nvidia’s traditional chipmaking rivals — such as AMD and Intel — to pitch more inference-friendly chips as Nvidia focuses on meeting the huge demand from bigger tech companies for its higher-end hardware.

D-Matrix, which is launching its first product this week, was founded in 2019 — a bit late to the AI chip game, as CEO Sid Sheth explained during a recent interview at the company’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, the same Silicon Valley city that’s also home to AMD, Intel and Nvidia.

“There were already 100-plus companies. So when we went out there, the first reaction we got was ‘you’re too late,’” he said. The pandemic’s arrival six months later didn’t help as the tech industry pivoted to a focus on software to serve remote work.

Now, however, Sheth sees a big market in AI inferencing, comparing that later stage of machine learning to how human beings apply the knowledge they acquired in school.

“We spent the first 20 years of our lives going to school, educating ourselves. That’s training, right?” he said. “And then the next 40 years of your life, you kind of go out there and apply that knowledge — and then you get rewarded for being efficient.”

The product, called Corsair, consists of two chips with four chiplets each, made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — the same manufacturer of most of Nvidia’s chips — and packaged together in a way that helps to keep them cool.

The chips are designed in Santa Clara, assembled in Taiwan and then tested back in California. Testing is a long process and can take six months — if anything is off, it can be sent back to Taiwan.

D-Matrix workers were doing final testing on the chips during a recent visit to a laboratory with blue metal desks covered with cables, motherboards and computers, with a cold server room next door.

While tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have been gobbling up the supply of costly GPUs in a race to outdo each other in AI development, makers of AI inference chips are aiming for a broader clientele.

Forrester’s Nguyen said that could include Fortune 500 companies that want to make use of new generative AI technology without having to build their own AI infrastructure. Sheth said he expects a strong interest in AI video generation.

“The dream of AI for a lot of these enterprise companies is you can use your own enterprise data,” Nguyen said. “Buying (AI inference chips) should be cheaper than buying the ultimate GPUs from Nvidia and others. But I think there’s going to be a learning curve in terms of integrating it.”

Feldgoise said that, unlike training-focused chips, AI inference work prioritizes how fast a person will get a chatbot’s response.

He said another whole set of companies is developing AI hardware for inference that can run not just in big data centers but locally on desktop computers, laptops and phones.

Better-designed chips could bring down the huge costs of running AI to businesses. That could also affect the environmental and energy costs for everyone else.

Sheth says the big concern right now is, “are we going to burn the planet down in our quest for what people call AGI — human-like intelligence?”

It’s still fuzzy when AI might get to the point of artificial general intelligence — predictions range from a few years to decades. But, Sheth notes, only a handful of tech giants are on that quest.

“But then what about the rest?” he said. “They cannot be put on the same path.”

The other set of companies don’t want to use very large AI models — it’s too costly and uses too much energy.

“I don’t know if people truly, really appreciate that inference is actually really going to be a much bigger opportunity than training. I don’t think they appreciate that. It’s still training that is really grabbing all the headlines,” Sheth said.

  • FSSAI Instructs Online Food Delivery Companies To Ensure 45-Day Expiry Of Their Products

FSSAI Instructs Online Food Delivery Companies To Ensure 45-Day Expiry Of Their Products

Amid rising consumer complaints, food regulator FSSAI on Tuesday directed e-commerce players selling food items on their platforms to ensure a minimum shelf life of 30 per cent or 45 days before expiry, at the time of delivery to customers.

According to an official statement, Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) convened a meeting with e-commerce Food Business operators (FBOs) to reinforce compliance requirements for e-commerce FBOs.

“The (FSSAI) CEO asked the e-commerce FBOs to adopt practices to ensure minimum shelf life of 30 per cent or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery to the consumer,” the statement said.

Rao, who chaired the meeting, clarified that any product claims made on e-commerce platforms must align with the information provided on the product labels and in adherence to FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations.

He also cautioned the FBOs against making unsupported claims online.

“This would prevent misleading information and protect consumers’ right to accurate product details,” the regulator said.

Rao highlighted the pivotal role of online platforms in protecting consumer health and promoting transparency. He reiterated the mandate that no FBO can operate on any e-commerce platform without a valid FSSAI license or Registration, emphasizing the critical need for regulatory compliance.

In a move to ensure safe food handling at every level, he instructed FBOs to implement proper training programs for delivery personnel, empowering them with essential food safety and hygiene protocols.

Additionally, Rao emphasized the importance of delivering food items and non-food items separately to the consumers to avoid potential contamination.

In his concluding remarks, the CEO, FSSAI underscored the need for all e-commerce FBOs to adhere to food safety standards diligently.

He emphasized that a transparent, compliant, and accountable e-commerce food sector is vital for protecting consumer health and fostering confidence in digital food marketplaces.

The session was attended by over 200 participants joined both physically and virtually from across the country, underscoring the significant commitment to strengthening food safety standards within the e-commerce sector.

Earlier this month, the FSSAI asked state authorities to increase surveillance in warehouses of e-commerce operators and issue standard operating procedures (SoPs) for delivery personnel to ensure safe food to consumers.

In its 45th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting on November 7, States and Union Territories were urged to ramp up surveillance at popular tourist destinations to ensure heightened safety standards in preparation for the peak tourist season from November through March.

Rao had asked “Food Commissioners of various states to step up surveillance on warehouses and other facilities utilised by e-commerce platforms.” He also asked for SOPs to be issued for such warehouses, as well as delivery personnel of these platforms.

“States/UTs were asked to increase surveillance samples and were also asked to deploy Food Safety on Wheels mobile vans for this purpose,” the regulator said.

  • Finding Natural Balance: Exploring Non-Intoxicating Wellness Products

Finding Natural Balance: Exploring Non-Intoxicating Wellness Products

In today’s hectic environment, many people are looking for natural solutions to balance and improve well-being without drugs. Several natural health products that help the body and mind in mild, non-psychoactive ways have emerged from this transition. These products target wellness aficionados who value clarity, serenity, and vigour with herbal infusions and novel cannabinoids. These goods’ relaxing and helpful effects are worth exploring on the path to natural balance, especially for holistic health enthusiasts.

    A new cannabinoid wave

Wellness products abound in cannabis-based ingredients. The most well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), although lately, non-intoxicative substitutes have attracted more attention. One such mildly affecting chemical is hexahydrocannabinol (HHC). For people who prefer the wellness advantages of cannabinoids without the euphoric symptoms, HHC provides a softer, cleaner sensation than THC. Emerging studies and user stories point to HHC’s potential to help with relaxation, stress release, and attention enhancement, presenting it as a useful tool in wellness programs.

Non-intoxicating cannabinoids broaden natural well-being by offering options for various requirements and lifestyles. HHC shows how natural products can promote well-being and productivity in an age of balance. Along with HHC, CBD, CBG, and CBN offer non-intoxicating relaxing, pain reduction, and sleep therapies. They expand wellness options for non-traditionalists.

    Botanical allies for harmony

Beyond cannabinoids, botanicals are at the centre of the health movement, delivering centuries-old natural therapies, like ashwagandha, chamomile, and turmeric which help health regimens. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic plant, regulates cortisol to alleviate stress. Chamomile, known for its calming effects, aids sleep. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory effects help muscles and joints recuperate.

These botanicals are easy to incorporate into daily life and complement other wellness practices. Many people use ashwagandha or chamomile to relax before bed. Turmeric in lattes, drinks, and supplements boosts antioxidants for active people. Botanicals are gentle but beneficial for holistic wellness due to their adaptability and compatibility with the body’s natural cycles.

    Mindfulness improves wellness from within

Wellness items are strong, but genuine balance requires thoughtful habits to build inner serenity and resilience. Yoga, meditation, and breathwork are easy ways to relax, clear the mind, and reduce stress. These techniques boost flexibility, strength, and lung capacity while promoting inner peace and control. Mindfulness in daily life can change how people handle stress and turn problems into learning opportunities.

Lifestyle practices can also promote wellness. Quality sleep, frequent exercise, and proper nutrition help preserve equilibrium. These practices and natural wellness products like HHC or botanical supplements create a holistic well-being plan. Prioritising physical and mental health helps people establish a sustainable wellness strategy that suits their needs and aspirations.

    Future of natural wellness

As more people seek holistic health remedies, non-intoxicating wellness products may grow. New studies and advancements illuminate cannabis and botanicals’ potential benefits. This growth reflects a cultural change towards personalised self-care that respects individual preferences and requirements. The wellness business will soon release items that improve physical and mental health, supporting balance and well-being.

    Conclusion

Wellness can be achieved without intoxicants through cannabinoids like HHC, botanicals, or mindful living. It enriches one’s body and mind by balancing, energising, and connecting. These non-intoxicating solutions let people naturally manage their health and stay present while navigating life. Mindful decisions and natural remedies make balance rewarding and achievable.

  • Delhi High Court Flags Expired Products Being Repackaged: “This Cannot Be A Business”

Delhi High Court Flags Expired Products Being Repackaged: “This Cannot Be A Business”

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday expressed concerns over the sale of expired food products that are reintroduced in the markets after repackaging and re-branding with new expiry dates and said that people cannot be made to consume “adulterated” food items. The high court said no one can be allowed to sell expired items and this cannot be a business. “People cannot be having adulterated food in Delhi. Give us suggestions on how this can be tackled,” a bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. The bench was hearing a public interest litigation which was initiated on its own after several such instances of expired products being repackaged with new expiry dates came to light.

Advocate Shwetasree Mazumdar, who was assisting the court as amicus curiae, submitted her report and suggested that a QR code could be generated by the manufacturers for all packed food items which would help in tracking the original expiry dates of the products. She said legislation dealing with the issue is already in place but the penalties prescribed for violations are not deterrent and they be revisited to ensure greater deterrence.

“Food business operators be directed to mark all food products with a unique alphanumeric code or a QR code that is identifiable by an FSSAI representative by cross-reference to a centralised database, which will reveal the batch number and expiry date of a product immediately and on site, to obviate testing and sampling to ascertain whether expiry dates and other information on the label has been tampered with,” the amicus submitted.

She added that this would be similar to the mandatory QR code requirement imposed by the Union Health Ministry for the tracking and tracing of certain identified pharmaceutical products and would assist in taking expeditious action against violators. The court asked the authorities to submit suggestions on how they were planning to ramp up the sample collection and testing. The bench directed the Delhi Police to file a fresh status report in the matter and asked certain alleged counterfeiters, who were found to be selling expired chocolates by re-packaging the same, to be personally present in the court on the next hearing.

“You cannot be selling expired food items. This cannot be a business. Ask your clients to remain personally present in court next time,” the bench told the counsel for the alleged counterfeiters. The court had earlier issued notice to the central government, Delhi government, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Delhi Police, seeking their response on the matter.

The suo motu PIL was initiated after Justice Prathiba M Singh referred the matter to the division bench to be taken up on the judicial side. Justice Singh was hearing a civil suit filed by the Hershey Company, a well-known chocolate manufacturer, seeking an injunction before the Diwali period against certain rank counterfeiters from selling expired chocolates by re-packaging the same. She found that the counterfeiters had knowledge of and access to Hershey’s mark and packaging and had blatantly copied them misrepresenting their expired and counterfeit chocolates as the complainant’s products.

The single judge, prima facie, had concluded that the suit revealed an extraordinary situation involving public health, particularly relating to food products. The division bench, in its January order, had said, “From the order dated December 19, 2023, passed by the single judge, it is apparent that there is a coordinated and systematic mechanism in place by which the expired products are being re-packaged/ re-branded with new expiry dates and are being introduced into the markets.”
