  • Is India Ready To Lead The Protein Revolution? Heres What It Needs To Make It Happen

Is India Ready To Lead The Protein Revolution? Heres What It Needs To Make It Happen

When Huber’s Butchery in Singapore made headlines as the world’s first butcher shop to sell cultivated chicken from GOOD Meat in 2023, it wasn’t just a game-changer in food tech-it was a glimpse into the future of sustainable eating. Shoppers browsing the familiar butcher displays found meat that had never seen a farm, grown directly from animal cells in bioreactors. It was a clear sign of a shift away from traditional protein sources, which are linked to animal slaughter, carbon emissions, and the overuse of resources like land, water, and feed. While countries like Singapore are taking bold steps in the smart protein space, the big question is: can India – home to diverse agriculture, a talented workforce, and rising protein demands – lead the charge to become the protein powerhouse of the future?

Also Read: What India Needs To Become The Protein Powerhouse Of Future

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

India is a nation obsessed with carbs-rice, roti, and dal dominate most meals-so protein often takes a backseat. Despite significant advancements in food production, with food grain output reaching 269 million metric tonnes, the focus has mainly been on meeting calorie needs, not nutritional balance. More and more, studies are showing the drawbacks of relying on animal-derived proteins-think saturated fats, cholesterol, and the lack of dietary fibre. Enter smart proteins-plant-based, fermented, or cultivated options – that offer a nutrient-packed solution to meet our protein needs.

India is seeing a surge in smart protein startups, with over 100 companies working to develop alternative proteins. The market is already buzzing with 545 different products, ranging from plant-based meat to dairy alternatives, available both in stores and online. This growing presence is a sign that consumers are beginning to embrace alternatives, driven by health concerns, sustainability, and ethical choices. On a global scale, the alternative protein market is expected to hit $15.7 billion in 2024, with a growth rate of 9.9%, reaching $25.2 billion by 2029. With India’s growing middle class, urbanization, and rising health consciousness, it’s clear that the country has a real shot at becoming a leader in the future protein market.

India’s agricultural strength-especially its vast range of native crops like millets and legumes-could play a big role in developing affordable, locally sourced alternatives that cater to the Indian palate. Cutting-edge tech, like precision fermentation (which uses microbes to produce proteins like non-animal whey), is making it possible to create animal-like proteins without the environmental toll. Similarly, biomass fermentation (using fungi to produce nutrient-rich protein) is gaining traction as a scalable solution. By doubling down on research and innovation in plant-based proteins and fermentation technologies, India could create high-quality, affordable protein products that are accessible to everyone.

The Indian government is on board too, with policies like BioE3, the Karnataka Biotechnology Policy, and funding for smart protein research showing a clear commitment to solving food security, sustainability, and climate challenges. With smart investments in R&D, production subsidies, and initiatives to boost local crops for plant-based proteins, the government can play a crucial role in turning this emerging sector into a mainstream success.

That said, there are still hurdles. Consumer awareness is low – only 27% of early adopters know about plant-based meats, and just 11% have tried them. To push this sector forward, there’s a big need for education on the health and environmental benefits of smart proteins, as well as overcoming barriers like taste and affordability. Luckily, advances in texturization and extrusion are already making plant-based meats taste and feel more like the real thing. Plus, innovations in nutrition are ensuring that these alternatives can match, or even beat, traditional meat in protein content. But the sector still needs more investment and exploration into cutting-edge technologies like 3D printing, electrostatic spinning, and shear cell tech to really perfect the texture and flavour of plant-based meats.

With the right mix of innovation, investment, and consumer education, India has the chance to lead the global transition to smarter, more sustainable protein solutions that are better for our health and the planet.

  • China says it’s ready to launch the next crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday

China says it’s ready to launch the next crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday

JIUQUAN, China — China said all systems are ready to launch the next crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday, the latest mission to make the country a major space power.

The two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who’ve lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months.

The new mission commander, Cai Xuzhe, went to space in the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022, while the other two, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, are first-time space travelers both born in the 1990s.

Song was an air force pilot and Wang an engineer with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation who will be the crew’s payload specialist. Wang will be the third Chinese woman aboard a crewed mission.

The three appeared at a brief news conference Tuesday behind protective glass, declaring their intention to carry out their scientific projects on the space station and “bring pride to the fatherland.”

The Shenzhou-19 spaceship carrying the trio is due to launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China atop a Long March-2F rocket, the backbone of China’s crewed space missions. Launch time is set for 4:27 a.m., according to the space agency’s spokesperson Lin Xiqiang.

China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, largely due to the United States’ concerns over the program’s complete control by the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm.

Besides putting a space station into orbit, the space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. It aims to put a person on the moon before 2030, which would make China the second nation after the United States to do so. It also plans to build a research station on the moon.

The moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. — still the leader in space exploration — and others, including Japan and India. America is planning to land astronauts on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years, though NASA pushed the target date back to 2026 earlier this year.

During the upcoming mission, the space station will receive resupplies from an uncrewed craft, aiding them in performing space walks and replacing and installing equipment to protect the Tiangong station from space debris, much of which created by China.

The mission is due to end in late April or early May. Lin, the spokesman, said China has measures in place in the event that the astronauts must return earlier.

China launched its first crewed mission in 2003, becoming only the third nation to do so after the former Soviet Union and the United States. The space program is a source of enormous national pride and a hallmark of China’s technological advances over the past two decades.

  • Is Kylie Jenner Ready For Baby #3 With Timothee Chalamet?

Is Kylie Jenner Ready For Baby #3 With Timothee Chalamet?

As of now, Kylie Jenner is a mother to two little ones named Stormi and Aire with her ex-boyfriend, Travis Scott. Kylie and Travis dated off and on from 2017 until 2023. When their relationship officially ended, it came as a shock to Kardashian-Jenner fans everywhere. Many people thought Kylie and Travis were in it for the long haul, but in reality, they just weren’t meant to be. She has since moved on with Timothee Chalamet. Rumors about Kylie and Timothee dating first sparked in April 2023. Is it true that Kylie is interested in having her third child with the Wonka actor?

Does Kylie Jenner Want Kids With Timothee Chalamet?

Kylie and Timothee’s relationship seems to be a strong one, even though they don’t share any pics on social media together. They are occasionally spotted enjoying date nights together, and they usually look happy. A source recently told Life & Style that Kylie is beyond excited by the prospect of expanding her family with Timothee. The source said:

    kylie jenner kidskylie jenner kids
    Instagram / Kylie Jenner

”Kylie and Timothee have never said they’re exclusive, so in his book he hasn’t done anything wrong. Women do not say no to him, ever, and are totally open to no-strings-attached brief encounters. Temptation is everywhere. But Kylie is blissfully unaware to the point where she’s talking about having a baby with him.”

Will Baby #3 Preserve Kylie Jenner And Timothee Chalamet‘s Relationship?

Things between Kylie and Travis didn’t work out, despite the fact that they share two children. Throughout history, it’s been proven time and time again that when couples have kids, it doesn’t automatically mean they’re going to stay together forever. Might that also be the case for Kylie and Timothee? The source went on to say:

Having a baby with him will keep him in the picture no matter what happens, and it also gives her an amazing sperm donor with the added benefit of his A-list status. She’s putting it out there that she wants them to start trying for a kid and she seems confident he won’t be turned off by the extra pressure.”

As of now, Kylie hasn’t outright said that she wants to pursue a third pregnancy with Timothee in any social media posts or interviews. Timothee hasn’t spoken up on the topic, either. When Kylie and Travis’s relationship first fell apart, it was rumored that they split based on trust issues and a clash in lifestyle choices. These days, she seems far more in tune and in alignment with Timothee. But does that mean family expansion is truly in the cards?

Do you think it’s true that Kylie is excited about having a baby with Timothee sometime soon? Do you think Timothee would be on board with this idea? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

  • Paul Pogba ready to ‘give up money’ to play football for Juventus again | Football News

Paul Pogba ready to ‘give up money’ to play football for Juventus again | Football News

The midfielder wants to be part of France’s squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 but says the decision will be up to coach Didier Deschamps.

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is eager to return to football after having his doping ban reduced from four years to 18 months and said he dreams of playing at the 2026 World Cup with France.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) cut the 31-year-old’s ban earlier this month after he was provisionally suspended by Italy’s National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO Italia) in September 2023 following a positive test for DHEA, a banned substance that boosts testosterone levels.

Pogba, who appealed to CAS arguing his ingestion of DHEA was not intentional, will be eligible to return to play for Juventus in March – and he said he was stronger, wiser and even willing to take a pay cut to play for the Italian club.

“I am ready to return to normal in 2025. I only have one desire, to play football. The reality is that I am a Juve player and I am preparing to play for Juve,” Pogba told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday.

“I don’t have to speak, the pitch will speak and then [coach] Thiago Motta will judge with his own eyes, based on what he sees. I’m ready to give up even money to play for Juve again. I want to come back,” the player, who has a contract with Juventus until June 2026, added.

Pogba, who last played for Juventus over a year ago in a 2-0 win at Empoli, said that getting the initial ban was the most difficult moment of his career.

“It was a very difficult year and what hurt the most was spending every day outside the stadium and (Juventus’s training centre) Continassa taking my children to school without being able to go inside to train or play for Juventus.

“Many past and current teammates have always supported me. [Juan] Cuadrado called me every other day and always made me laugh.”

Pogba added that as well as getting back to his best for the Serie A side, he also wants to return to Didier Deschamps’ France squad in time for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“The dream of the World Cup is there, but Deschamps hasn’t opened the doors for anyone. It’s up to me to open them he told me to work,” the midfielder said.

Pogba’s contract with the Italian giants expires in June 2026 and is currently worth eight million euros ($8.684 million) a year.

During his ongoing suspension, the midfielder receives only the minimum salary stipulated in the Serie A collective agreement – just over 2,000 euros ($2,170) a month.

Disney Adventure cruise to set sail from Dec 15, 2025; get ready for longest rollercoaster at sea , Lifestyle News

When it was announced earlier this year that the Disney Adventure cruise would soon be coming to Singapore, local Disney fans were thrilled.

And now we finally know when the first sailing date will be — Dec 15, 2025 from Marina Bay Cruise Centre.

This was announced during a “grand reveal” event at Marina Bay Sands on Wednesday (Oct 16).

Bookings for the cruise are scheduled to open on Dec 10, and more details on pricing and sailing dates will be released on Nov 14.

Sarah Fox, vice president and regional general manager (Southeast Asia) of Disney Cruise Line, shared during the grand reveal: “From fun and interactive spaces for kids, to relaxing venues for adults to unwind, to entertaining and engaging places for families to enjoy together, guests will find endless adventures from bow to stern.”

The ship will have three- and four-night itineraries without making any stops. It’ll feature seven themed areas, each showcasing popular characters from movies such as Toy Story, Big Hero 6 and The Jungle Book.”

This will be Disney Cruise Line’s first Asia-based cruise and the ship will be ported at Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least five years as part of a collaboration between Disney Cruise Line and the Singapore Tourism Board.

Disney announced that, for the first time on a Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Adventure cruise will feature three all-new attractions in an upper-deck adventure zone dedicated to the Marvel Universe.

Among these is the Ironcycle Test Run, the longest rollercoaster at sea, measuring 250m in length.

There will also be an all-new Broadway-style musical Remember, developed exclusively for the Disney Adventure.

Here’s what else you can look forward to onboard.

    Non-stop entertainment and activities

From a Toy Story-themed water play area to the longest rollercoaster at sea, it’s hard to get bored onboard the Disney Adventure.

At the heart of the ship is Disney Imagination Garden, which will have a state-of-the-art Garden Stage with three-deck-high LED screens.

It will also be home to several shows starring like Let’s Set Sail, a high-energy dance party, and Avengers Assemble!, an epic battle of Marvel Super Heroes and Villains.

There’s even Baymax Super Exercise Expo, a musical exercise show inspired by the members of Big Hero 6.

Over on the upper decks at Marvel Landing, there are the attractions and experiences inspired by iconic Marvel Super Heroes.

The highlight will definitely be the Ironcycle Test Run where guests can test-drive Tony Stark’s latest Ironcycle prototype on a thrilling high-speed circuit and be suspended up to nine metres above the upper decks.

There’s also Pym Quantum Racers, where guests will get to steer Pym Tech-modified mini-cars on an oversized toy set track.

Groot Galaxy Spin will take guests on a ride onboard a Nova Corp Bass Jumper, set to a groovy mix of upbeat music.

If you don’t mind getting wet, head over to Toy Story Place, a whimsical water play land where the world of Pixar’s Toy Story comes to life.

This area, which is great for families with young children, will include water features inspired by the Toy Story films. Some examples are a large family pool, multiple whirlpools, towering water slides and interactive splash pads.

Over at San Fransokyo Street, you’ll find Big Hero Arcade, a dynamic family gaming lounge.

The highlight here is Hiro Training Zone, an immersive training simulator that allows groups of four to put their skills to the test as they dodge, run and block their way across a high-tech gaming floor.

Guests can also look forward to two magical productions at the Walt Disney Theatre, including Remember, an all-new musical spectacular developed exclusively for the Disney Adventure. This is a heartwarming tale featuring the beloved robot duo from Disney-Pixar’s “Wall-E” and other beloved Disney stars.

Parents with kids aged six months to three years can head to the It’s A Small World nursery, offering babysitting services for a nominal fee in a whimsical environment inspired by the beloved Disney attraction of the same name.

For kids between the ages of three and 10, there’s the Disney’s Oceaneer Club, which is divided into themed areas like The Hub, Fairytale Hall, Andy’s Toy Box and Walt Disney Imagineering Lab.

Each space will be designed for storytelling, creativity, arts and crafts, dress-up, playing games, watching Disney movies, and meeting favourite Disney characters.

Tweens aged 11 to 14 can unwind at Edge, a vibrant clubhouse where they can have fun, make friends and enjoy various games. On the other hand, teens aged 14 to 17 can head over to Vibe, a dynamic space where they can meet new people, watch movies, play games and engage in group activities.

Both Vibe and Edge are actually hidden in plain sight, disguised as storefronts on San Fransokyo Street.

And if you’re an adult who needs some time away from kids, fret not as there are experiences exclusive for you.

The ship will also have a fitness centre with a juice bar, wellness consultations, meditation room and dedicated spaces for activities such as cycling and yoga. This is only available for adults and those aged 14 and older when accompanied by an adult.

Adult guests can also indulge in a spa day at sea in the private treatment rooms and salon.

The spa will be available for adults and those 13 and older when accompanied by an adult.

    You’ll never go hungry

With a plethora of dining options onboard, guests will be left spoilt for choice.

The Disney Adventure offers rotational dining, which allows guests to have three unique Disney dining experiences during their voyage.

A preset dining schedule is included with each booking and guests will also be accompanied by the same dedicated service team assigned to their dining party throughout the voyage.

For buffet-style breakfast and lunch, there’s Enchanted Summer Restaurant — inspired by Disney Animation’s Tangled and Frozen — and Pixar Market Restaurant.

Both buffet locations will switch to table-service dinners in the evening as part of the dinnertime lineup during each voyage.

Every guest aboard the Disney Adventure will also enjoy a dining experience at one of the ship’s two entertainment restaurants — Navigator’s Club and Hollywood Spotlight Club — which will feature appearances and interactions with popular characters including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck.

Guests will also dine at one of two magically animated restaurants — Animator’s Palate and Animator’s Table — which celebrate the artistry of Disney and Pixar animated films.

Apart from the dining halls, there will also be quick-service restaurants, 24-hour room service, specialty treats and gourmet cafes.

Looking for a more luxe dining experience? There’s Palo Trattoria, which offers Italian fare and wines.

There’s also Mike & Sulley’s, a premier dining establishment which has four distinct experiences, including a a full-service Japanese steakhouse, teppanyaki room, bar with Omakase-style dining, and an outdoor sushi and sashimi offering.

Move-in ready and built to suit anyone yearning for that ever-desirable rural lifestyle, 721 Avonside Road at Avonside hosts a beautiful country manor surrounded by 180 acres of native temperate forest and rolling grasslands.

This five-bedroom, two-bathroom home offers plenty of space to entertain, relax and explore, and takes every opportunity to showcase sprawling views across the nearby Dalgety plains.

Set in the quiet rural community of Avonside, about 20 minutes from Jindabyne, the property is bordered by large, natural lifestyle holdings and friendly locals who look after one another.

Sales agent Dani Kell says a “cosy yet grand” feel permeates the entire home.

“Cathedral ceilings, large windows and timber features lend themselves to bright, elegant spaces throughout the ground floor,” she says.

“The sunroom and living room are heated by their own cosy fireplaces and offer an intimate, relaxed atmosphere.”

Also on the ground floor is a large dining room that leads into a country-style kitchen.

“The kitchen is complete with little luxuries that include marble benchtops, a Thermalux wood fire oven, induction stove/oven and butler’s pantry,” Dani says.

“Just around the corner are two of the five bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes. The bathroom they share is sleek and modern, with a free-standing bath, large vanity and contemporary fittings.”

Three more bedrooms await upstairs, the most impressive of which is the master suite, with its private balcony, oversized walk-in wardrobe, ensuite, and an extra room more than suitable for storage or a home office space.

These extra amenities continue outdoors in the form of a deluxe teenager’s retreat featuring its own fireplace, bathroom and climate control.

Number 721 is set up to host with ease thanks to a wine cellar, large entertaining deck, undercover alfresco and swim-spa looking over the valley. Low-maintenance landscaped gardens have already been established, fed by four water tanks with a total capacity of 80,000 litres.

Other outbuildings include a multi-purpose shed, machinery shed, greenhouse and dog run. Two fenced paddocks are ready to house hobby livestock or horses.

Large properties like this are a haven for native wildlife of all kinds. In the surrounding bush, you can expect to see kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, various reptiles and vibrant birdlife. There are endless opportunities to hike and explore.

All in all, Dani says this property is not one to be missed.

“I could easily see a large family living here, or maybe a couple who loves to entertain regularly,” she says.

“It’s a beautiful home in an elegant style that isn’t seen as often these days, and for the right person, it will certainly be a cherished retreat from the everyday worries of life.”

‘I’d always wanted to die, but I wasn’t ready to go’: How depression and a near-death experience made him appreciate life, Lifestyle News

To mark World Mental Health Day on Oct 10, AsiaOne shines the spotlight on mental health advocates and looks at how Singaporeans cope with mental health issues in their lives.

Noel Boyd was just eight years old when he made a desperate plea to the universe.

“I prayed to God to take my life away,” said the 45-year-old emcee and content creator.

His feelings of helplessness were triggered by bullying, not just from his fellow classmates but also teachers who were abusive towards him, he said.

“I remember asking myself, ‘Is this how it’s going to be for the rest of my life?’”

Being only one of two non-Chinese pupils in the school, Noel often felt like he didn’t fit in. He also didn’t have many friends.

Confiding in one teacher about the heavy-handed physical punishment he suffered from another teacher proved to be a mistake.

“It got even worse the next day after the teacher told the other about it. So I was like, ‘What the s***?’ I trusted that one person.”

From that point on, he shared that his trust of adults “went from little to zero”.

Noel did not tell his parents about the incident, which in hindsight he felt he should have.

Fortunately, his secondary school days turned out to be a far cry from the torment he’d experienced in primary school.

Being a born entertainer, Noel was drawn to the stage and it was there that he uncovered his innate talent for engaging a crowd.

“I started emceeing when I was in secondary two or three. And I was in the lion dance troupe, so I was a pretty popular kid in school,” he mused.

But beneath this chatty and extraverted exterior that he presented was another side to his personality few were aware of.

‘If you don’t love yourself, how can you love somebody else?’

Noel was diagnosed with clinical depression as an adult, but the diagnosis happened only in his 30s, after a suicide attempt in 2018.

Before this, he’d tried to take his life several times. It was only after this last attempt that he finally made the decision to see a therapist regularly, and still does to this day.

Many of his depressive episodes in his 20s to 30s were triggered by relationship issues or a bad breakup.

It was only in therapy that he uncovered the reason why these relationships affected him so badly when they went south.

”I had been after love in order to feel loved. So whenever a breakup happened, it felt like I wasn’t loved at all,” he shared.

There was also no open discussion of mental health at the time, so Noel would keep his problems to himself.

It didn’t help that he would feel that he was troubling others if he reached out to friends who didn’t know what to say.

“When they’d say, ‘Oh my god, again?’ I felt that I was troubling them or letting them down.

“As an entertainer, it gets even worse because people always expect you to be the happy, lively one,” said Noel.

“But looking back, a lot of that [persona] was fake,” he admitted. Only his ex-girlfriends were privy to Noel’s more vulnerable side, which made it seem like a betrayal whenever they left.

But Noel holds no blame or resentment towards his exes. “I wasn’t a good partner to them,” he stated bluntly.

“Ultimately, I didn’t love myself,” said Noel, citing the phrase, “If you don’t love yourself, how do you love somebody else?”

    Neighbour saved his life

Noel’s lifestyle at the time was fuelled by nights out and alcohol. This went on for “many years”.

“Whenever I got into a funk, I would turn to alcohol. It was my best friend,” he admitted.

Unfortunately, the situation would also get worse whenever he opened up about his troubles to friends, some of whom would respond with, “Come, let’s go for a drink.”

Despite having been in therapy for several years by then, Noel shared that he suffered a relapse in October 2021.

At the time, Noel and his wife were heading for a separation, which he shared was triggered by his depression as well as other issues brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I wasn’t thinking clearly, and the suicidal thoughts were very strong,” said the father of a one-year-old girl and a newborn daughter then.

Unexpectedly, what pulled him back from the brink was a neighbour living on the first floor of his condominium.

Noel had bumped into him as he was going out to buy what he thought would be his “last pack of cigarettes”.

“He asked me if I was okay and where I was going, and then he said, ‘Okay, I’ll talk to you when you get back’. Obviously, I had no intention of talking to him,” said Noel.

As luck would have it, the neighbour was waiting for him when Noel returned.

“He just told me, ‘Come into my house, we’ll talk’,” said Noel.

What happened next was something Noel had never experienced before.

It was as if a dam within him broke and a torrent of emotions was released.

“I was just crying and crying and nobody could make me stop,” he stated.

A friend then had to send him to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) but as hospitals were still under Covid-19 restrictions at the time, his friend could only leave him at the door.

    Opening up about his struggles

Till this day, Noel is not sure what compelled the neighbour to reach out to him.

“I knew he had his own mental health issues as well and we had talked about my journey before. But I’m thankful that he was home at the right time, and he saw me.”

The episode, however, also marked a sea change in terms of how Noel viewed his mental health.

Rather than hide it from others as usual, Noel decided to openly share his struggle with depression for the first time on social media.

When asked why he made the brave decision to do a tell-all, Noel said the reasons were manifold.

“Firstly, when I was in IMH, there were people there who recognised me,” said Noel, who had made a name for himself on social media as a paranormal investigator; he had also hosted several broadcast TV shows around the same theme.

“I didn’t want anyone to be spreading stories about me, so I decided I might as well be open about it,” he added.

In his post on Oct 31, 2021, Noel shared about his admission to IMH and his “relapse with depression”.

He added then: “There’s no shame in not being okay. I hope my honesty helps someone you know get the help he or she needs.”

It’s still what he believes in today.

“I get upset when people don’t understand what clinical depression is. When people hear the term, they think ‘Oh, this person is always sad’, but that’s not true. It’s a chemical imbalance [in the brain] and there’s nothing the person can do,” said Noel.

He admitted, however, that there was a part of him that feared making the public admission.

“I didn’t know if potential clients would be watching the video. And if they don’t understand the subject, they’re just going to say, ‘I think it’s better not to hire him’,” he stated.

And unfortunately, to Noel’s knowledge, it happened with at least one client.

On the flip side, however, it allowed him to “gain some really good clients who have also gone through stuff”.

“One of them hugged me and told me, “Bro, I know exactly what you’re going through,” said Noel. “Not only is he a client, he’s now a good friend.”

Other friends whom he’d “not heard of from a long time” made contact because of this and even some celebrity friends reached out to him to share that they were going through the same thing.

“Mental health affects a lot of people in the creative world,” he reflected.

He also surmised that dealing with depression might also be harder for men due to the stoic front that they’re expected to put on.

The rhetoric that “a man has to appear strong” is one that Noel strongly disagrees with.

“It’s okay [for men] to cry; it’s okay to have emotions,” said Noel, even as he admitted paradoxically that he wasn’t like this before.

Following the last depressive episode where he was admitted to IMH, however, Noel has allowed himself to let his guard down.

“I’ve allowed people to see the vulnerable side of me.”

That side shows up unexpectedly too, during our interview when the conversation flowed to Noel’s children.

The process of divorce had affected him badly and he took to the bottle heavily during a period of time in 2022.

It took a heart attack in October 2023 to make him realise that he wasn’t ready to give up on life.

“My heart stopped in the ambulance and they had to revive me. Everything changed that day, everything,” said Noel.

But the heart attack was far from a negative event in his eyes.

    Life-changing near-death experience

To others who’d ask, he always told them that “it was a great thing” to have happened as the time spent in the ICU allowed him the space to think clearly for the first time in a long while.

“I’d always wanted to die, but I wasn’t ready to go,” shared Noel of the realisation.

“I’ve got two beautiful young girls that I want to see grow up, and I want to make an impact on their lives because I love them so much,” said Noel, turning emotional.

After that, living alone while recuperating also made him realise how strong he can be. At the time, even doing the simplest things such as going out to buy a meal would be a chore that’d leave him winded.

In January this year, Noel was at a hawker centre when he started bleeding profusely from his nose and mouth. “It took five hours to stop the bleeding [in the hospital],” said Noel.

It got so bad that one of the doctors had whispered in his ear to “think of the person you love the most to help you through this time”, he shared.

“I thought of my two girls, because I thought I would never see them again.”

Thankfully, the bleeding eventually stopped. But till date, Noel is unsure about why it had happened.

Noel describes himself as being in a much better place now, rating his mental health at a “nine out of 10”.

But he understands the fragility of this state.

“Sometimes when the going gets tough, a bad thought may pop up. You have to acknowledge that it’s there and then move on.”

He has also improved his relationship with alcohol and made a pact with himself to steer clear from it if he feels down.

“I won’t lie and say that I’ve quit drinking, but now I only drink when I’m happy.”

For him, what has helped is “listening to daily affirmations and going for long walks in nature”.

“I’m not shy to share with people how I feel, but that being said, I’m also very selective of who I hang out with now.”

Shedding old friends who weren’t such a positive influence was part of the healing process and what he “had to do” for himself.

His experience has also made him more aware of how he wants to show up for his children if they turn to him with their issues.

“Parents need to talk to their children and not just brush things aside when they share their problems.

“What’s small to you as a parent could be huge for the child.”

And as for how to speak to someone who is struggling, it is to “just sit with them and listen” and not dismiss it or attempt to divert their focus to something else.

    Regrets, he’s had a few

Noel readily admits that he is regretful when it comes to his marriage and children.

“I love [my ex-wife] to this day, and it pains me that I can’t be with my daughters every day.

“I cannot turn back time but I obviously wish that things were different. I would have done better with this current mindset.”

And what is this current mindset?

“I’ve learnt to love myself, and appreciate myself for who I am. I no longer feel sorry for myself like I used to.”

According to him, his friends and closest people around him have also seen a change.

“They see me laughing and smiling again, behaving like a clown,” said Noel.

He’s also more mindful about what he does to protect his mental health.

This also means staying away from “paranormal stuff” that brings along “negative energy” if he has to do research on it, unless it’s something he thinks is interesting or worth doing.

That may include restarting his podcast, where he invites people to share their spooky encounters, he tells us.

He’d also recently started his own events business, Noel Boyd Productions, doing work that drives him.

“I love doing events, whether it’s being on stage or planning an event. It’s an honour to make people forget all their problems for just that one day or four hours, say for an event or dinner and dance. To me, it’s a powerful responsibility.”

Despite being in the best mental shape he’s been in years, Noel doesn’t just wonder if his depressive episodes will come back again. In fact, he knows it will.

“But I’m better equipped to deal with it now because I’ve got the right circle of people around me, a therapist whom I can speak to, and I’ve put in the work [to better prepare myself].”

His message to those who are struggling is that “there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, even if you don’t see it”.

“There’s a reason why you’re here, but you’ve got to find that reason.

“And you’ve got to believe that you’re so much stronger than you think you are.”
