Banning cellphones in schools gains popularity in red and blue states

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas’ Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom have little in common ideologically, but the two have both been vocal supporters of an idea that’s been rapidly gaining bipartisan ground in the states: Students’ cellphones need to be banned during the school day.

At least eight states have enacted such bans over the past two years, and proposals are being considered in several more states this year.

Here is a look at the push by states for such bans.

The push for cellphone bans has been driven by concerns about the impact screen time has on children’s mental health and complaints from teachers that cellphones have become a constant distraction in the classroom.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who has called on Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms about their effects on young people’s lives, has said schools need to provide phone-free times.

Nationally, 77% of U.S. schools say they prohibit cellphones at school for non-academic use, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. But that number is misleading. It does not mean students are following those bans or all those schools are enforcing them.

Kim Whitman, co-founder of the Phone Free Schools Movement, said the issue is catching on because parents and teachers in both red and blue states are struggling with the consequences of kids on mobile devices.

“It doesn’t matter if you live in a big city or a rural town, urban or suburban, all children are struggling and need that seven-hour break from the pressures of phones and social media during the school day,” she said.

At least eight states — California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia — have enacted measures banning or restricting students’ use of cellphones in schools.

The policies range widely. Florida was the first state to crack down on phones in school, passing a 2023 law that requires all public schools to ban cellphone use during class time and block access to social media on district Wi-Fi.

A 2024 California law requires the state’s nearly 1,000 school districts to create their own cellphone policies by July 2026.

Several other states haven’t banned phones, but have encouraged school districts to enact such restrictions or have provided funding to store phones during the day.

Sanders announced a pilot program last year providing grants to schools that adopt phone-free policies, and more than 100 schools signed on. In her state of the state address this week, Sanders proposed an outright ban.

“We will ban cellphones in our schools, bell to bell, so that our kids are not distracted, in class or out of it,” Sanders said.

Other governors recently calling for bans include Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, who was sworn in this month, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has suggested she’ll seek a statewide policy, but has not offered specifics.

The cellphone bans have faced opposition from some parents who say they need to be able to contact their children directly in case of emergency.

Some parents have pointed to recent school shootings where having access to cellphones was the only way some students were able to communicate with loved ones for what they thought might be the last time.

But supporters of the bans have noted that students’ phones could pose additional dangers during an emergency by distracting students or by revealing their location during an active shooter situation.

Parents opposed to the ban have also said they want their children to have access to their phones for other needs, such as coordinating transportation.

Keri Rodrigues, president of the National Parents Union, said she agrees about the dangers of social media on children but that the bans sought by states are taking too broad of an approach. Banning the devices during the school day is not going to solve underlying issues like bullying or the dangers of social media, she said.

“We have not done our job as grown-ups to try to teach our kids the skills they need to actually navigate this technology,” she said. “We’ve just kicked the can down the road and thrown them into the deep end of the pool when they’re by themselves after school.”

Not Butter, Not Red Meat – Doctor Reveals Worst Food Hurting Your Liver

Your liver is a vital organ responsible for detoxifying your body, producing bile, and storing essential nutrients. Maintaining its health should be a priority. When it comes to liver health, many of us assume that foods high in saturated fats, such as butter, ghee, or red meat, are the primary culprits. However, a recent revelation by Dr Adrian on Instagram has turned this notion on its head. The doctor identifies a surprising yet common ingredient in our diets as the most dangerous food for liver health: high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

Also Read: Liver Health: 5 Healthy Drinks To Cleanse Your Liver Naturally

High Fructose Corn Syrup: Worst Food For Liver

High fructose corn syrup is a widely used sweetener found in an array of processed foods, including cookies, candies, breakfast cereals, soft drinks, and even some sauces. Unlike glucose, which is readily used by the body for energy, fructose is processed differently. When consumed in large amounts, fructose is metabolized primarily in the liver, where it is converted into fat. Over time, this accumulation of fat can lead to a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Research has shown a strong link between excessive HFCS consumption and the development of NAFLD. The problem lies in the way fructose is processed. Unlike other sugars, fructose doesn’t stimulate insulin secretion or promote satiety. This can lead to overconsumption, weight gain, and increased fat production in the liver, thereby elevating the risk of liver damage.

“If you think meat or saturated fats like ghee or butter are the worst for your liver, think again! These are actually fine in moderation,” says Dr. Adrian. “The real issue is the hidden sugars in processed foods, specifically high fructose corn syrup.”

Foods to Avoid For Liver Health:

To protect your liver health, it is crucial to minimize your intake of foods containing HFCS. Here are some common sources:

    • Soft Drinks and Energy Drinks: These beverages are loaded with HFCS, contributing to excessive sugar intake.
    • Packaged Snacks: Cookies, candies, and other sweet treats often contain HFCS to enhance flavour and shelf life.
    • Breakfast Cereals: Many cereals marketed as “healthy” are packed with hidden sugars, including HFCS.
    • Processed Sauces: Ketchup, barbecue sauce, and salad dressings are surprising sources of HFCS.

Reading ingredient labels carefully and opting for natural or homemade alternatives can go a long way in protecting your liver.

Here Are 7 Foods That Are Good for Your Liver

While avoiding harmful foods is important, incorporating liver-friendly options into your diet is equally crucial. Here are some foods that promote liver health:

    1. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and arugula are rich in antioxidants that help detoxify the liver.
    2. Cruciferous Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts support liver enzyme production and aid in detoxification.
    3. Fatty Fish: Salmon, mackerel, and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce liver inflammation.
    4. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds provide essential nutrients that support liver function.
    5. Turmeric: This spice contains curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
    6. Green Tea: Rich in catechins, green tea helps improve liver enzyme levels and reduce fat buildup.
    7. Garlic: Garlic activates liver enzymes that help flush out toxins and contains selenium, which protects the liver.

While high fructose corn syrup may seem harmless, its long-term effects on liver health are significant and should not be overlooked. By minimizing processed foods and prioritizing liver-friendly options, you can take proactive steps toward a healthier life.

Remember, small dietary changes can have a big impact on your overall health. Your liver will thank you!

Football matches in Wales POSTPONED on Saturday after Met Office issue rare ‘danger to life’ red warnings with Storm Darragh set to hit the country as well as parts of Bristol and Somerset

    • Red weather warnings have been issued by Met Office across Wales due to storm
    • LISTEN NOW to It’s All Kicking Off!: Why can’t Chelsea win the league? They made seven changes and still scored five. Do you think Liverpool could do that?

All football matches scheduled to take place in Wales on Saturday 7 have been postponed due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring destructive winds and heavy rain, the Football Association of Wales has announced.

In a statement, the body confirmed that it had taken the extraordinary measure after advice from the Met Office, which has issued rare red weather warnings in the country.

Storm Darragh is sweeping in across the Atlantic, bringing with it 90mph winds and torrential downpours set to spark flooding and travel chaos in parts of Britain.

‘The Met Office has issued red, amber, and yellow weather warnings for the vast majority of Wales due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring damaging winds and heavy rain, causing significant disruption and danger to life,’ the statement from the FAW began.

‘It is not safe to drive in such weather, including travelling to and from football matches. Being outside in high winds increases the risk of injury and The Met Office advises people to stay indoors if possible.

‘Clubs have been advised to check for and secure any loose items around their grounds if it can be done safely. This includes bins, furniture, goalposts, and fences etc.

All football matches in Wales on Saturday have been postponed due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring destructive winds and heavy rain

The Met Office has issued an 18-hour amber wind warning along the UK's west coast from South Ayrshire down to Cornwall (pictured) , as well as in Northern Ireland, will run on Saturday from 3am to 9pm.

The Met Office has issued an 18-hour amber wind warning along the UK’s west coast from South Ayrshire down to Cornwall (pictured) , as well as in Northern Ireland, will run on Saturday from 3am to 9pm.

‘Potential postponements of fixtures on Friday 6 December and Sunday 8 December will be considered on a case-by-case basis, in line with each individual league’s policy.’

Meteorologists said a period of ‘extremely strong winds’ will develop during the early hours of Saturday morning as the low pressure system moves across the Irish Sea.

The ‘significant disruption’ warning from 3am until 11am covers most of the coast of Wales including Cardiff and Swansea, as well as parts of Bristol and North Somerset.

That could mean that various Football League and non-league fixtures could also be affected, though at this point there has been announcement from the FA.

Championship side Bristol City welcome QPR to Ashton Gate in the early fixture on Saturday, while in the National League Yeovil Town are set to entertain Braintree Town at 3pm.

Forecasters told residents to ‘stay indoors if you can’ and ‘avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions – it is not safe to drive in these conditions’.

Homeowners were urged to secure loose items outside their properties such as Christmas decorations, bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.

The red alert, issued just after 10am on Friday, also urged people to ‘consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items’.

Red warnings are a rare event, with the last one issued by the Met Office just under a year ago on January 21, 2024 for 99mph Storm Isha – and Friday is only the 19th time in records dating back to 2011 that a red warning has been imposed.

The Met Office has also issued a 39-hour yellow wind warning for the whole of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, from 3pm today until 6am on Sunday.

And an 18-hour amber wind warning along the UK’s west coast from South Ayrshire down to Cornwall, as well as in Northern Ireland, will run on Saturday from 3am to 9pm.

How Connie Grace won Cole Palmer’s heart: Mancunian manicurist, who walked the red carpet with footballer beau, is no stranger to showing off her jet set lifestyle

Cole Palmer traded the football pitch for the red carpet on Tuesday night, stepping out with his influencer girlfriend Connie Grace for the first time at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London.

The Chelsea midfielder, dressed sharply in a black suit and bowtie, attended the glamorous event at The Roof Gardens, with Connie, also from Manchester, who complemented Cole’s look in a sleek black dress that highlighted her toned midriff.

Making their relationship public with the debut appearance, the couple, who partied with the likes of Usain Bolthave reportedly been together for around three months.

Connie is a nail technician but regularly travels, posting updates on her Instagram profile, which boasts over 17,000 followers despite having just 72 pictures.

Cole regularly likes her uploads, including sultry bikini snaps from her idyllic holidays to Ibiza and Bali. Her most recent glamorous photo was taken at Stamford Bridge – with the caption: ‘Fur season’.

The couple are said to have flown to Ibiza via private jet in August, where they enjoyed a ‘quick trip’ together, dining out on the harbour where they shared a romantic candlelit meal.

Connie was also seen posing alongside the Chelsea star after he picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in September. However, the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London was their first official outing.

The Chelsea footballer shared a tender embrace with Manchester-born Connie during the club’s clash against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in the autumn, hugging the beauty from the sidelines in front of thousands of fans.

Cole was named PFA Young Player of the Year following his breakthrough season at Chelsea. The England midfielder scored 22 goals and made 11 assists during what was a disappointing campaign for his club, who finished sixth in the Premier League.

But the footballer’s performances on the pitch proved to be the big positive for his side.

The couple’s sweet moment while he proudly showed off his PFA Young Player of the Year award came after the pair were spotted on holiday together in Ibiza at the start of August following reports of their ‘growing friendship.’

Cole’s summer break gave him the chance to spend quality time with Connie, 22, after he scored in the Euros final against Spain, which England went on to lose 2-1.

A source previously told MailOnline: ‘Cole and Connie have grown increasingly close over the summer.

‘They were able to spend quality time together during Cole’s time off and their friendship has blossomed.

‘Cole even invited Connie to his game on Sunday, cementing their closeness and the trust between them.

‘They maybe young but their relationship is serious now and Cole wants Connie to be part of his world, on and off the pitch.’

Meanwhile, Cole was interviewed on the red carpet on Tuesday night for a range of hilarious social media videos which were released on GQ’s TikTok page.

When asked whether he would rather score an own goal or be subbed off in the first half, the footballer said: ‘Own goal. When you get subbed in the first half, it’s bad. It just damages your reputation. It’s never happened to me touch wood.’

The interviewer went on to ask whether he would rather score a goal from the half way line or net a bicycle kick – to which Palmer responded: ‘That’s tough, I don’t know. I feel like a bicycle kick is harder. I can’t really do a bicycle. I can practice though.’

Earlier this month, England stars Cole and Kobbie Mainoo posed as cover stars for GQ’s magazine’s Men of the Year edition.

The publication said the edition aims to celebrate men who are ‘breaking the rules, changing the game, and taking their slice of the culture to another level’.

Palmer and Mainoo feature after the pair enjoyed stunning seasons at club level and played a role in England reaching the Euro 2024 final.

The pair were jointly interviewed by the magazine for the December issue, with the headline ‘Kobbie Mainoo & Cole Palmer Are Just Getting Started’.

The magazine highlighted Mainoo and Palmer as being two players who ‘grabbed the nation’s attention’ on England’s route to the Euro 2024 final.

Ruben Amorim verdict delivered by former Man United star Nani – after Sporting Lisbon boss is confirmed as Red Devils’ new head coach

Nani has delivered his assessment of Ruben Amorim as the Sporting Lisbon boss prepares to follow his path from the Portuguese giants to Manchester United.

Amorim was officially announced as Man United’s new head coach on Friday, with the 39-year-old old taking up the position during the international break on November 11.

The confirmation came after a week of negotiations between the two clubs, as Man United acted quickly after sacking manager Erik ten Hag.

As part of the agreement Amorim would remain in charge of three final Sporting matches, including crucial clashes with Man City in the Champions League and Braga in the Portuguese top flight.

The first match came on Friday night with Sporting earning a dominant 5-1 win over Estrela Amadora, whose team featured former Man United star Nani.

Nani, now 37, has offered his backing for Amorim to achieve success at Man United after praising his ‘excellent job’ at Sporting.

‘All I can say is good luck,’ Nani told Sport TV.

‘He has done an excellent job at Sporting, and I hope he can do the same at United, which is a great club, one of the best clubs in the world.

‘I think he is in a great place; he will have the chance with excellent players to deliver a strong response, as he has all the conditions to do so.’

Nani received an ovation from the Sporting fans when he came on as a second half substitute for Estrela, his hometown club.

The winger had come through Sporting’s academy and played 136 times for the first team, scoring 31 goals, before moving to Man United for a reported £21m fee in 2007.

Nani joined United in 2007 from Sporting Lisbon and went on to spend eight years at Old Trafford. During this time he won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

After leaving United in 2015, he had spells at Fenerbahce, Valencia and Lazio before moving to the US to play for Orlando City.

A return to Italy followed as he joined Venezia prior to transfers to Melbourne Victory and Adana Demirspor.

Amorim will make the same move as Nani from Sporting to Man United and the pair were seen in a warm embrace on the touchline following Friday’s match.

Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand revealed earlier this week that Nani had also given him more insight on Amorim.

‘I spoke to Nani actually the other day and he said “Rio, whatever you want to talk about, tactics or whatever, the players play for him, they love him and they respect him”,’ Ferdinand said in a video posted on X.

‘One of the issues I think with Erik ten Hag and what he [Nani] said about Amorim is he’s very straight, very straight and very direct.

‘From what I’m hearing, I’m talking to people that have played for [him] but also been around [him] as a human, I think the character and the charisma compared to Erik ten Hag will be the big differentiator, will be the big difference.’

Amorim, who has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Man United, admitted post match that over the course of three days he was left to make what he feels is the biggest decision of his career to date.

‘I was told it was now or never. I had three days to make my mind up,’ he said.

‘A decision that would radically change my life. I’ve had other opportunities. The president and [Hugo] Viana can confirm this. This is not the first or second time I have been requested.

‘After Sporting, I wanted Manchester. There’s a time I have to take a step forward. It was hard. I had to do this.

‘I don’t want to victimise myself. The only one in no-man’s land was me. I didn’t say it before because it had to be agreed between the clubs.’

Ruben Amorim wins first game with Sporting since he was confirmed as Man United’s new boss – as Red Devils target Viktor Gyokeres scores FOUR in 5-1 win

Ruben Amorim may be on his way to Manchester United, but if Friday night’s performance is anything to go by he’s certainly leaving Sporting fans with a few parting gifts.

His side demolished Estrela Amadora 5-1 in Lisbon with Viktor Gyokeres dismantling the defence with four goals in a stunning performance to maintain the Portuguese champions’ perfect start.

Maximiliano Araujo netted the fifth goal for the hosts in the 85th minute, while Rodrigo Pinho netted in the first half for Estrela Amadora, but Sporting simply had too much to handle.

Gyokeres’ first goal came in the 19th-minute, profiting from a loose deflection inside the box to the left, before cutting in and curling past Estrela Amadora goalkeeper Bruno.

His second – 12 minutes later – was a powerful right-footed strike into the roof of the net from near the edge of the box, having intelligently beaten the offside trap.

And just before the break, the Swedish striker signed from Coventry City, completed his hat-trick in 23 minutes with a penalty, confidently converted.

Unsurprisingly given the scoreline, Amorim’s side put on an assured show for the Sporting crowd, who are waving goodbye to their boss.

With 20 shot and 65 per cent of the ball, it was perhaps a display that watching Manchester United fans might get excited about.

Gyokeres was in fact asked whether he would be joining Amorim at Old Trafford any time soon, replying: ‘I don’t know. I’m here, and as you can see, I enjoy it.’

He added: ‘Sad that Amorim is leaving, he’s done amazing here, we will do the same job and keep the same faith in the team. We all wish him the best.’

Amorim himself has faced questions all week on United’s interest ever since Erik ten Hag’s departure on Monday.

And that trend continued after the match, with the line of intrigue now turning to how he expects the Sporting fans to react in his final home game before he leaves.

Amorim admitted that he is prepared to take whatever send off he gets from Sporting's home fans - be that anger or praise

‘In the next home game, whether we win or lose by 15-0, I’ll be there to see what the fans want to give me,’ he replied.

‘I understand their anger, but we move on and time heals everything. It was the best period of my life.’

  • College Football World Sounds Alarm on Powerhouse Program’s Latest Commit After Spotting Red Flags

College Football World Sounds Alarm on Powerhouse Program’s Latest Commit After Spotting Red Flags

Grabbing another victory, the head coach of the Buffs, Deion Sanders, is working to live up to the title of “Coach of the Year.” Colorado (6-2) defeated Cincinnati (5-3) to earn bowl qualification for the very first time after 2016, thanks to a late field goal and a missed chance on downs before halftime. Buffs received more excellent news prior to the game, so it appears that the celebration of winning will be doubled this time. Yes, a four-star wide receiver has committed.

Deion Sanders and Co. have acquired a valuable player who will aid the squad in the years after Travis Hunter, as 2024 is his last year in CFB. And they got it. According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Adrian Wilson, the 4-star WR, announced his commitment to Colorado on Saturday. However, before his de-commitment on October 23, Wilson was pledged to Arizona State. He has previously stated that he is committed to TCU and Oregon. But this time after committing to Buffs, Wilson mentioned to On3, “It took me a minute to find but, I’M HOME🦬.

Plus, Wilson said to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, “What excites me the most is the opportunity to go somewhere in the air-raid offense and start.” However, given his inconsistent behavior, it is still unclear if he will ever recommit to a different program. Basically, the wide receiver has taken his pledge for the fourth time. Therefore, the CFB fans were incensed by this contradiction, and one fan wrote, “I wouldn’t believe bruh til week 1 😂.”

Safe to say, while Colorado was pleased with Wilson’s commitment, the whole college football community was mocking the 4-star wide receiver’s unstable decision.

Fans’ amusing responses to the 4-star commit

Wilson has so far this season hauled in 26 passes for 601 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging more than 23 yards per catch, which is among his outstanding high school stats. His 1,003 catches and 14 touchdowns from the previous season solidified his status as a superb playmaker. But it is unacceptable for a high school athlete to change his pledge multiple times and one fan remarked, “I’m a buff and happy he committed to Colorado but bruh… High schoolers shouldn’t be allowed to switch up 4 times 😭😭 NIL needs some regulation.” Having the same concern in mind, another fan commented, “Bro’s on his 4th school before entering CFB. He finna be a transfer portal wizard 🧙🏾‍♂️

According to the On3, Wilson is the 267th-best player in the nation for the 2025 season. “Re-opening my recruitment was not an easy decision, as I hold a great deal of respect for the coaching staff and the vision you have for the program,” the top athlete informed On3 prior to de-committing to Arizona. A fan ridiculed his assertion by writing, “Bros goin to Nebraska next week😂.” Echoing the same sentiment, another fan wrote, “🦬🦬🦬 Love the honesty😂😂😂.

The last word from a fan, expressing uncertainty over Wilson’s final destination for the 2025 class, read, “Wonder what school he gonna be at next week.” Therefore, the fog surrounding his commitment won’t go away until the WR makes his final decision. We’ll see whether he stays with the Buffs. What do you think?

  • College football winners, losers for Week 7: Oregon gets historic win, Oklahoma’s Red River rout reveals trend

College football winners, losers for Week 7: Oregon gets historic win, Oklahoma’s Red River rout reveals trend

Week 7 was always billed as a battle of heavyweights across college football. Against all odds, the slate lived up to the hype with four overtime games involving AP Top 25 teams and more top-10 teams falling down the stretch.

Most notably, No. 2 Ohio State fell to No. 3 Oregon for its seventh loss in eight tries against top-five opponents under coach Ryan Day. Oregon, conversely, picked up its first win against a top-two opponent in program history and took control of the Big Ten title race.

Elsewhere, No. 1 Texas established itself as a serious national title contender by eviscerating No. 18 Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. LSU also got back into the conference title race by shocking Ole Miss. Utah may have fallen out for good after losing to Arizona State

Here are the biggest winners and losers of college football’s Week 7, including a more real clarity in conference championship races.

    Loser: Ryan Day

Ohio State paid more than $20 million to put together this roster over the offseason. The Buckeyes ran off incumbent starting quarterback Kyle McCord and replaced him with Will Howard. Safety Caleb Downs (Alabama) and running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss) transferred into the program. The Buckeyes have every advantage and more in one of the most championship-or-bust seasons in college football history.

It took one test for the house of cards to crumble. Worse, it was embarrassing. Day’s handpicked quarterback failed to recognize a clock situation and slid as time expired for the loss. Despite being in field goal range, Ohio State ran dropback passing. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was called for offensive pass interference, which pushed the Buckeyes out of field goal range.

Now, Day is 1-7 against AP top-five opponents since the pandemic. The loss was the first against a non-Michigan Big Ten opponent since 2018. It was the program’s second consecutive loss to Oregon.

    Winner: Oregon coach Dan Lanning

Ducks coach Dan Lanning has lost a few heartbreakers over the years, but Saturday in Eugene was his crowning moment. Oregon shocked Ohio State 32-31 with a game-winning field goal by Atticus Sappington with 1:47 remaining. Laning has been a rising star in the industry for years, but the win against Ohio State brings a new level of credibility. The win was the first over an AP top-two team in program history and should elevate the program to No. 2 for the first time since Marcus Mariota graduated in 2014.

    Loser: Oklahoma

Prior to coach Brent Venables’ arrival in 2022, Oklahoma had scored a touchdown in every version of the Red River Rivalry dating back to 1998. Before that, that streak went all the way back to 1977. After a devastating 34-3 loss against No. 1 Texas, the Sooners have now failed to score a touchdown twice in the rivalry in three years under Venables.

The offense was a total disaster once again, eliciting comparisons to the embarrassing 49-0 loss in 2022. Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. tried his best as the first true freshman to start for OU in the rivalry game in history, but he finished below 100 yards passing until a late drive in garbage time. In his defense, Oklahoma also got only 64 yards rushing from its running backs, and only one wide receiver had more than 20 yards.

The Sooners rank last in the SEC in almost every offensive category. It’s fair to give Venables at least one mulligan for injuries. But two bad losses to the Longhorns in three years? That’s a trend, and it’s very much not a good one.

    Winner: Free football

Oct. 12 was already viewed as one of the best days of college football in a long time. To make matters ever better, the sports gods blessed us with tons of free football. Four different games involving ranked opponents went to overtime for the first time since Sept. 27, 2003. No. 13 LSU pulled off the upset by shocking No. 9 Ole Miss. USC gave No. 4 Penn State all it could handle before dropping in overtime. Purdue was painfully close to upsetting No. 23 Illinois but failed on a potential game-winning 2-point conversion. Florida failed to score in overtime as No. 8 Tennessee survived a putrid performance. Even when the top teams don’t lose, they’ve looked highly vulnerable. That could set up a wild finish to the season.

    Loser: Alabama

I tend to give teams one mulligan, a weird game that you chalk up to 18-22 year olds having a bad day. For Alabama, it was the astonishing road loss against Vanderbilt. After following that disasterclass up with a narrow 27-25 win over South Carolina at home, the Crimson Tide are officially on fraud watch.

The Tide again struggled to run the ball against South Carolina and put together a disaster of a defensive performance against an offensively inept team. The Gamecocks had touchdown drives of 16 and 10 plays, and Alabama simply couldn’t get them off the field. This is a flawed, inconsistent team that’s not playing championship football.

The 2024 Cyclones joined the 1938 Cyclones as the only teams in Iowa State history to start 6-0 after beating West Virginia 28-16 in a big road game. Running back Carson Hansen posted three touchdowns in the win as Iowa State nearly reached 400 offensive yards in a big win.

A fun little side plot: West Virginia honored former tight end Anthony Becht after inducting him into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame. His son, Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht, celebrated by dicing up his father’s alma mater to the tune of 265 yards and a touchdown. The younger Becht did not receive a scholarship offer from WVU but has become one of the Big 12’s top passers.

    Loser: College kickers

Rumors that kickers are becoming too good may have been somewhat premature. Yes, Ole Miss kicker Caden Davis hit a career-long 57 yarder vs. LSU, but there were some otherwise abysmal showings on Saturday. Kickers for both Texas and Oklahoma missed easy field goals, while Longhorns kicker Bert Auburn actually got a second attempt… and missed it, too. Oregon’s Sappington was lucky to get another field goal attempt after whiffing on a 44 yarder early in the game. South Carolina’s Alex Herrera was put in a brutal position by his staff, but missed a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter that would have given South Carolina the lead. The chaos of college kickers always keeps the sport unpredictable. It’s not going anywhere soon.

Penn State coach James Franklin openly loves Warren, and he put together one of the best tight end receiving performances in history in a 33-30 overtime victory against USC. Warren caught an absurd 17 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown as offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki leveraged his mismatch early and often.

Warren has been a strong contributor all season, including a 146-yard performance against Bowling Green. However, he hit another level in the huge road victory to give Penn State a bonafide playmaker.

    Loser: Utah

The Utah story is reaching a brutal conclusion after a hobbled quarterback Cameron Rising played a miserable game in a shocking 27-19 loss against Arizona State. In his return from a hand injury, Rising threw three interceptions and the Utes got into the end zone just once in the loss as the program fell to 1-2 in Big 12 play.

Dropping to Arizona and Arizona State in successive weeks makes the Utes’ path to the Big 12 Championship Game far more difficult. Games against BYU and Iowa State — both undefeated — still lie ahead. What was supposed to be a coronation for Utah is suddenly turning into a disaster for the second straight season.

    Winner: Vanderbilt

The Commodores have no interest in being a one-hit wonder. A week after shocking Alabama, Vanderbilt beat Kentucky 20-13 behind two touchdown throws from QB Diego Pavia. The win makes for the program’s best start since a 5-1 record in 2008, when Bobby Johnson coached the program. Vanderbilt has reached two SEC wins in a season only once since 2018. The vibes could not be better in Nashville.
