At an event hosted by the Embassy of India in Brussels, India’s finest culinary offerings in wine and seafood were showcased to business leaders, trade bodies, marine foods importers, government trade agencies, and members of the diplomatic community. It was organised in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), and the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
    Saurabh Kumar, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg and European Union (EU) highlighted the event’s significance in fostering cultural and trade ties. Sunil Barthwal, Secretary, Department of Commerce, spoke about India’s dynamic trade landscape and its growing partnership with the European Union, particularly in the seafood and wine sectors. At the event, the attendees indulged in a carefully-curated menu featuring five premium Indian seafood varieties: Vannamei shrimp, Black Tiger shrimp, Kingfish (Surmai), Tilapia, and Squid.
    These delicacies were expertly paired with wines from Indian vineyards, whose bold reds, crisp whites, and refreshing roses demonstrated the global recognition of India’s wine craftsmanship. The Indian wine industry has grown substantially, with over 24 prominent brands combining global expertise with indigenous traditions.Reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, and Sangiovese, along with  whites like Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier, were highlighted.
    India’s total exports reached $433.09 billion in 2023-2024, with agricultural commodities contributing $33.24 billion (8 per cent of total exports) and marine exports accounting for $7.36 billion (22 per cent of agricultural exports) across 132 countries. Exports of Vannamei shrimp have quadrupled, firmly establishing it as a high-quality seafood product. With 500 EU-approved firms, India’s seafood processing capacity continues to expand, making the EU, India’s second-largest seafood market, with annual purchases of $0.95 billion.
    Additionally, India is the EU’s second-largest supplier of shrimp, holding an 8 per cent market share, and contributes 12 per cent of the EU’s squid imports, according to the ministry.

    Microsoft reports $65.6 billion in quarterly sales as investors look to know if AI spending worth it

    Microsoft on Wednesday reported an 11% increase in profit for the July-September quarter compared to the same time last year as investors looked for signs that the company’s huge spending on artificial intelligence is paying off.

    The company reported quarterly net income of $24.7 billion, or $3.30 per share, which beat Wall Street expectations.

    The Redmond, Washington-based software maker posted revenue of $65.6 billion in the quarter, up 16% from last year.

    Analysts polled by FactSet Research were expecting Microsoft to earn $3.10 per share on revenue of $64.6 billion.

    Microsoft doesn’t report revenue specifically from AI products but says it has infused the technology and its AI assistant, called Copilot, into all of its business segments, particularly its Azure cloud computing contracts.

    Leading in sales for the quarter was Microsoft’s productivity business segment, which includes its Office suite of email and other workplace products, growing 12% to $28.3 billion.

    Microsoft’s cloud-focused business segment grew 20% from the same time last year to $24.1 billion for the three months ending Sept. 30.

    Its personal computing business, led by its Windows division, grew 17% to $13.2 billion. Microsoft and the computer makers that run its Windows operating system this year unveiled a new class of AI-imbued laptops as the company confronts heightened competition from Big Tech rivals in pitching generative AI technology that can compose documents, make images and serve as a lifelike personal assistant at work or home.

    Building and operating AI systems is costly and Microsoft reported spending $20 billion over the quarter, mostly for its cloud computing and AI needs.

    Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a statement Wednesday emphasized the company’s push to get customers applying AI platforms in their workplaces as AI transforms jobs and work tasks.

    Nadella, now in his tenth year as CEO, saw his annual compensation increase 63% this year to $79 million, according to a statement filed ahead of Microsoft’s upcoming annual shareholder meeting in December. That’s despite Nadella offering to have his cash incentive reduced to reflect his personal accountability for handling cybersecurity threats.

    Earlier this year, a scathing report by a federal review board found “a cascade of security failures” by Microsoft let Chinese state-backed hackers break into email accounts of senior U.S. officials.

    The Malaysian health ministry has clarified that a social media post slamming the new song Apt by Blackpink’s Rose and Bruno Mars was not made by them, contrary to recent reports.

    The claim was made by South Korea media Kyunghyang on Oct 28, sharing a photo that reads: “Dissecting the song lyrics of Apt: These lyrics are clearly advocating a lifestyle that isn’t healthy and normalises Western culture.”

    Kyunghyang also claimed that the ministry had said the song was “frequently used in social media videos, integrating into daily life” and that there was a risk of children singing along to it without knowing its meaning.

    Apt was released by Rose and Bruno on Oct 18 with the title based on a Korean drinking game apateu (apartment) and lyrics including “Don’t you want me like I want you, baby? / Don’t you need me like I need you now? / Sleep tomorrow, but tonight, go crazy / All you gotta do is just meet me at the / Apateu“.

    Other Korean media outlets including MBC and Hankook Ilbo also reported on it, before it was picked up by English-language websites like Allkpop and Koreaboo.

    The ministry responded to Koreaboo on X yesterday (Oct 29), saying that “the statements regarding this article attributed to MOH have not been issued or authorised by the Government of Malaysia”.

    They added that the social media post being quoted by publications was made by “an entity which is not linked to the Ministry in any form whatsoever” and asked their audience to only rely on official channels for verified information on public health matters.

    A search by AsiaOne showed that the original post was made by a Facebook page called Public Health Malaysia, unrelated to the Malaysian government.

    Apt currently sits at over 202 million views on YouTube and made its debut at number one on the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excluding US charts. It dethroned another Bruno Mars song on the former, his collaboration with Lady Gaga on Die With A Smile.

    It also debuted at number eight on the Billboard Top 100.

    Real Estate Institute Of New Zealand (REINZ) Reports Lifestyle Property Market On The Rise

    Data released today by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) shows that in the three months ending September 2024, there were 1,400 lifestyle property sales, an increase of 45 sales or 3.3% compared to the previous three months. This represents an 11.8% rise from 1,252 sales during the same period in 2023.

    Over the year leading up to September 2024, 5,699 lifestyle properties were sold, 234 more than the year ending September 2023, marking a 4.3% increase. The total sales value of these properties sold was $6.34 billion.

    The median price for all lifestyle properties sold in the three months leading up to September 2024 was $945,000, an increase of $35,000 compared to the same period in 2023, or 3.8%. The median price for Bareland lifestyle properties was $450,000, a slight increase of $500 or 0.1% compared to 2023.

    Similarly, for Farmlet lifestyle properties, the median price in the three months leading up to September 2024 was $1,050,000, showing an increase of $27,196 compared to 2023, a 2.7% rise.

    “The September sales results reflect a continuation of the positive momentum in the market as we approach spring. The recent reduction in interest rates and indications of further decreases are boosting buyer confidence. This positive trend is expected to persist throughout the spring and summer selling season, leading up to Christmas,” commented REINZ Rural Spokesperson Shane O’Brien.

    Seven regions recorded an increase in sales compared to September 2023, with Northland (+63 sales) and Waikato (+42 sales) observing the biggest increases. Taranaki (-18 sales) and Bay of Plenty (-8 sales) recorded the biggest decreases in sales in the three months to September 2024 compared to the three months to September 2023. Compared to the three months to August 2024, 8 regions recorded increased sales.

    Ten regions saw the median price of lifestyle blocks increase between the three months ending September 2023 and the three months ending September 2024. The most notable examples were in the West Coast (+74.3%) and Taranaki (+21.2%), with

    the most significant decreases being in Auckland (-4.5%) and Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman (-2.7%).

    The median number of days to sell for lifestyle properties was 18 days more in the three months to September 2024 than in the three months to September 2023, sitting at 95 days. West Coast (65 days) recorded the shortest number of days to sell in September 2024. Auckland (114 days) recorded the longest number of days to sell.

    “Buyers have access to a good selection of listings across all markets, and the upward trend in median sale prices for both Farmlets and Bareland is encouraging. However, the increase in the average days on the market suggests that buyers are still cautious when purchasing,” comments O’Brien.

    Food safety is of utmost importance but it can be difficult to be sure of food hygiene when purchasing meals and drinks from outside. In a recent Reddit post, a customer reported that they found a cockroach floating on the surface of their cold coffee purchased from L’Opera, Khan Market, Delhi. Shared by Redditor @WaltzSimple6037, the user posted a picture of the iced latte and you can see ice cubes floating on top, along with the reported cockroach. In the other picture, the customer posted a picture of the bill, showing proof of purchase.

    The post read, “I visited Lopera today in Khan Market and ordered an iced latte to go. When I opened the drink, I thought I saw a coffee bean floating around, but when I flipped it over, it was a freaking cockroach.”

    The customer reported that the staff was “nonchalant” with “no real concern at all”. They added, “I’m seriously questioning how clean this place is now. What made it worse was how the staff handled it-they were so nonchalant and just kept saying sorry like robots, no real concern at all. If hygiene is this bad at such a well-known cafe, I can’t even imagine what it’s like at other places in India. Anyone else had similar issues here or at other cafes? This was such a letdown.”

    Responding to the incident, L’Opera Management told NDTV, “In the afternoon of Friday, October 4th two drinks were served at one of L’Opera’s outlets in Delhi to two customers as take-aways. Some ten minutes later, one of the customers returned to the outlet complaining about the presence of an insect in one of the takeaway drinks.”

    “Notwithstanding the fact that the product had not been under L’Opera’s control for a significant duration, the staff immediately apologised, refunded the purchase price and offered to replace the drink. The customer preferred to accept the refund and declined the offer. In subsequent exchanges with the customer which involved her family and friends, the more senior staff of L’Opera renewed the apology. Whatever the exact circumstances of this case may have been, a L’Opera customer has been very regretfully unsatisfied, something we profoundly regret,” L’Opera said.

    Snapchat failed to act on “rampant” reports of child grooming, sextortion and other dangers to minors on its platform, according to a newly unredacted complaint against the company filed by New Mexico’s attorney general.

    Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed the original complaint on Sept. 4, but internal messages and other details were heavily redacted. Tuesday’s filing unveils internal messages among Snap Inc. employees and executives that provide “further confirmation that Snapchat’s harmful design features create an environment that fosters sextortion, sexual abuse and unwanted contact from adults to minors,” Torrez said in a news release.

    For instance, former trust and safety employees complained there was “pushback” from management when they tried to add safety mechanisms, according to the lawsuit. Employees also noted that user reports on grooming and sextortion — persuading a person to send explicit photos online and then threatening to make the images public unless the victim pays money or engages in sexual favors — were falling through the cracks. At one point, an account remained active despite 75 reports against it over mentions of “nudes, minors and extortion.”

    Snap said in a statement that its platform was designed “with built-in safety guardrails” and that the company made “deliberate design choices to make it difficult for strangers to discover minors on our service.”

    “We continue to evolve our safety mechanisms and policies, from leveraging advanced technology to detect and block certain activity, to prohibiting friending from suspicious accounts, to working alongside law enforcement and government agencies, among so much more,” the company said.

    According to the lawsuit, Snap was well aware, but failed to warn parents, young users and the public that “sextortion was a rampant, ‘massive,’ and ‘incredibly concerning issue’ on Snapchat.”

    A November 2022 internal email from a trust and safety employee says Snapchat was getting “around 10,000” user reports of sextortion each month.

    “If this is correct, we have an incredibly concerning issue on our hands, in my humble opinion,” the email continues.

    Another employee replied that it’s worth noting that the number likely represents a “small fraction of this abuse,” since users may be embarrassed and because sextortion is “not easy to categorize” when trying to report it on the site.

    Torrez filed the lawsuit against Santa Monica, California-based Snap Inc. in state court in Santa Fe. In addition to sexual abuse, the lawsuit claims the company also openly promotes child trafficking and the sale of illicit drugs and guns.
