Besides the merits of its food, service, and anecdotes, there’s also the location. The sprawling green cover of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse forms a beautiful backdrop for meals at this restaurant. It is undeniable then that Gallops is a cultural landmark. So what happens when it decides to do a revamp after 26 years?

    The current custodians of its legacy – Chef Yajush Malik, Jasmine Singh and Mikhail Singh – explain what they set out to do: “Our goal was to introduce new features that we were unable to initially adopt and create a beautiful blend honouring the rich history that has made Gallops an iconic culinary destination.” The decor and menu have been enhanced with new features. The old parquet floors have been replaced by rich walnut flooring. The wooden trusses have been stripped of old polish to highlight the beauty of the wood beneath. Custom-made candlelight chandeliers and wall sconces bring a literal glow-up to the space.

    The restaurant also boasts an equestrian-themed memorabilia wall and a luxurious new bar area. The latter has an awe-inspiring centrepiece in the form of “The Red Dancers”, an artwork by renowned Dutch artist Peter Gentenaar. “Revamping Gallops was definitely a challenge as it was not only a prerequisite but a tough decision to go ahead with initially. We had to walk a fine line between preserving its authentic roots while subtly introducing newer, modern features to uplift its ambience and dining experience,” the partners say.

    Our meal consisted of newly introduced delicacies as well as signature Gallops dishes that have been retained on the menu. “We introduced 42 delectable dishes that showcase a modern twist on our traditional favourites, ensuring they resonate with contemporary dining trends. The main idea while curating the new offerings was to appeal to new and younger visitors as well as stand true to our long-time patrons.” Chef Yajush says. We started our meal with a luscious Paya Shorba, followed by a hearty Smoked Salmon and Nicoise Salad. We already began to note the generous portions, the thoughtful service and the warmth of the ambience. Each appetiser we tasted was an immediate hit: the decadently delicious Goan Grilled Prawns, the melt-in-the-mouth Dori Kebab (a Gallops must-try), the indulgent Chicken Zafrani Tikka and the impressively crispy Khatte Meethe Bhein. The stand out was the Chicken Liver Pate (served with Melba toast, gherkin, rum raisins and hazelnuts), which has been upgraded to include more toppings. The understated refinement of its taste and presentation seemed to capture the essence of Gallops on a platter.

    The bar menu has new additions too. We started with fruity sips of the Strawberry Aperol Harony (strawberry syrup, Aperol, Campari, Vodka) and an exquisite French 75. But the cocktail that wowed us the most was the Orchard Thief, a concoction of Bourbon whiskey, apple juice, cinnamon and bitters. The potency of the whiskey, balanced with the crisp sweetness of the apple, and rounded off with the spice at the end, made for a real treat.

    The mains continued to delight with their robust flavours. We loved the juicy succulence of the slow-cooked Braised Lamb Shanks, the convincing novelty of the Saag Burrata and the comfortingly silky Daab Chingri (served in an actual coconut). Forget plain tandoori roti and butter naan – we relished the Indian mains with delicious laal naan, missi roti and Malabari paratha, which elevated our experience. As many Gallops regulars will tell you, skipping dessert here is almost unheard of. If you want to try one of the new additions, opt for the Baileys Caramel Cloud – a medley of the all-time beloved notes of cocoa, whiskey, salted caramel and almond. If you want one of the classics, you cannot go wrong with the Baked Alaska. We demolished it in minutes despite the number of dishes that preceded it!

    Those at the helm at Gallops are quick to assure loyal patrons that they have maintained most of the facets of the original charm. Although my dining companion and I did not belong to this category of patrons, the promise fascinated us. At the preview meal for Gallops 2.0, we were the minority that indulged in its famed experience with completely fresh eyes (and palettes). So what did the first-timers find out? The answer: some of the reasons the other patrons choose to return. And thanks to the revamp, there can be more reasons to add to that list.

    Delhi’s love for world-class Asian cuisine is undeniable, with new restaurants continuously popping up and enticing us. One such exciting addition is Kamei, a luxurious “Modern Asian Restaurant & Cocktail Bar” in the vibrant heart of South Delhi. With 15 years of culinary expertise from the renowned House of Fio backing it, Kamei promises an exceptional dining experience.

    Upon entering Kamei, I was immediately struck by the lively atmosphere and chic decor. Even though the restaurant opened only a couple of months back, it was nearly full, the energetic music blending seamlessly with the buzz from the bar area. It felt like the perfect spot for a weekend night out.

    As someone who enjoys cocktails, I couldn’t resist exploring their innovative drink menu. I opted for the Palo-Mei, a tequila-based concoction made with 1800 Silver tequila and infused with Bird’s Eye chilli. This cocktail was a delightful balance; the heat of the chilli was beautifully offset by the sweetness of strawberry and grapefruit, creating a refreshing yet complex drink. I also tried the Mango Tai, another tequila delight. Don’t let its name fool you-it wasn’t overly sweet. Instead, it offered a subtle mango flavour combined with the invigorating notes of basil and citrus.

    The menu at Kamei is a fascinating blend of traditional and modern dishes, showcasing the diverse flavours of East Asia, with influences from China, Japan, Thailand, and beyond. The “Smalls to Share” section features an array of signature cold plates, while the “Larges to Share” includes classic curries and wok dishes that can be paired with Kamei Fried Rice or Yaki Udon for a complete meal.

    One dish that stood out was the Coconut Sea Bass Ceviche, enhanced by a richly flavoured coriander coconut leche de tigre. This dish was light yet creamy, with the prawn cracker adding a delightful crunch-plus, it was a feast for the eyes!

    No visit to an Asian restaurant would be complete without dim sum and sushi, so I ordered the Chicken Siu Mai. It was incredibly succulent, bursting with juicy flavours. I also had to try the Prawn Tempura, a dish I can’t resist at any Asian restaurant. Kamei did not disappoint; the tempura was perfectly balanced, with a delightful contrast between soft and crunchy textures.

    Another must-try for avocado lovers is the Yuzu Avocado. This dish features grilled avocado paired with a zesty wasabi sauce and a creamy yuzu emulsion. The crispy rice cake added a perfect crunch, making it a heavenly experience.

    While savouring the array of delightful dishes and cocktails, I was surprised with a dessert that elevated my mood to new heights. The Honeycomb, a Malaysian sponge cake drizzled with whisky caramel sauce and served with vanilla gelato, was simply divine-a true match made in heaven.

    Hyderabad Restaurant Raids Reveal Violations In Vidyanagars Emerald Mithai Shop, Subway, Rollzone And More

    When you go to a restaurant or buy food from a store, you assume it’s safe to eat, right? But if the people handling your food aren’t following proper hygiene practices, you could end up with a nasty case of food poisoning. On Friday, September 13, food safety officials conducted raids and inspections at several eateries in the Vidyanagar area of Secunderabad and found multiple food safety violations. The inspections, carried out by the Task Force teams of Telangana’s Commissioner of Food Safety, revealed alarming lapses in food safety and handling practices at several eateries, including Emerald Mithai Shop, Subway, Rollzone and Good Fresh – The Pizza House, in Hyderabad.

    At Emerald Mithai Shop, inspectors found no pest control and medical fitness certificates. Plus, no FOSTAC-trained personnel were present, and the wood-pressed oil manufacturing area door was left outside without insect-proof screens. The shop also had unlabelled sweets and savouries on display and open dustbins without lids were seen. Some items sold at the shop did not have FSSAI certificates, and food handlers were not wearing gloves or aprons.

    Subway was also found to be violating hygiene norms. Semi-prepared ingredients and ready-to-cook food items were not properly labelled, and use-by dates were missing. The gap between storage racks and walls was not maintained, leading to pest infection risks. Moreover, the fast-food chain outlet did not have a FOSTAC-trained supervisor.

    Similar violations were found at Rollzone and Good Fresh – The Pizza House. Rollzone did not display its FSSAI licence, and food items stored in the refrigerator lacked labels. Food handlers were also not wearing necessary protective gear such as head caps, aprons, or gloves. At Good Fresh, the FSSAI registration copy was not displayed on the premises, and medical fitness and pest control records were missing.

    Earlier, the FSSAI shared some food safety tips to follow during the monsoon season:

    1. Wash all food products purchased from the market properly before cooking.
    2. Keep yourself and your surroundings clean, and wash your hands with soap and water before cooking and eating.
    3. Use only clean water for cooking.
    4. Eat freshly cooked food and cook only as much as you need.
    5. Refrigerate leftover food as soon as it cools down to avoid microbial growth.
    6. Heat leftover food properly before consuming it.
    7. Keep perishables like milk and curd in the refrigerator immediately.
    8. Use fresh and local food products.
    9. Include immunity-boosting ingredients like pepper, garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, coriander, and turmeric in your diet. Read more here.
