Struggling With PCOS? Expert Reveals Best Diets To Follow

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work. In this condition, the ovaries become enlarged with small cysts on the outer edges. While hormonal imbalances are a major factor in the condition, the type of food you eat also matters. Certain foods and diets are more suitable for managing PCOS symptoms than others. If you’ve been struggling with PCOS or have been recently diagnosed with it, you’ve come to the right place. Recently, nutritionist Reema Hingorani Madhian took to her official Instagram handle to share some of the best diets for women suffering from the condition.

What Type Of Diet Is Best For PCOS?

According to the nutritionist, there are three types of diets that can be beneficial for women suffering from PCOS. Check them out below:

    1. Protein-Rich Diet

Protein is a vital nutrient that our body needs, even more so if you’re a woman with PCOS. A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) showed metabolic advantages in the treatment of PCOS for those who followed a high-protein diet compared to a standard protein diet. Reema suggests including some amount of protein in all your meals. It could be something as simple as a few eggs, sprouts, kala chana, besan cheela, or yoghurt.

    2. Complex Carbs Diet

Many of us think that carbohydrates are bad for us, but they really are not. In fact, they can be quite beneficial if we opt for the right type. To manage PCOS, Reema recommends swapping simple carbs like maida with complex carbs like whole grains and legumes. This is because complex carbs have a less dramatic effect on blood sugar levels compared to simple carbs. So, make sure you’re including some in all your meals throughout the day. Click here to discover healthy carb sources you must include in your diet.

    3. Low Sugar Diet

Do you find yourself indulging in sugary treats every now and then? If so, it’s time to rethink! According to a study published by the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI), it’s critical to avoid high-sugar foods as they can significantly worsen insulin resistance. Furthermore, they can also disrupt hormone balance. To avoid this, the nutritionist suggests following a low-sugar diet. Whether it’s artificial sugar, processed sugar, or natural sugar, ensure you consume them in moderation.

What Foods To Avoid If You Have PCOS?

Now that you know what diets are best for you, the next question in your mind would be: what foods to avoid? You must steer clear of diets rich in highly processed foods, sugary foods, red meat, or alcohol. All of these can cause insulin resistance and inflammation in the body, thus disrupting your hormonal balance and worsening your PCOS symptoms. So, avoid them as much as you can for optimal health.

  • Struggling With Infections? Study Reveals Having A Fibre-Rich Diet May Help

Struggling With Infections? Study Reveals Having A Fibre-Rich Diet May Help

The age-old advice to include fibre in your diet just got a scientific boost. A recent study has revealed that a fibre-rich diet may help protect against potentially life-threatening infections caused by harmful bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and E. coli. By influencing the gut microbiome, fibre appears to create a more resilient internal environment.

The study highlighted how the composition of gut bacteria can predict a person’s likelihood of succumbing to infections. A particular group of bacteria called Enterobacteriaceae, which includes Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella, and E. coli, exists at low levels in healthy individuals. However, factors like inflammation or consuming contaminated food can cause these bacteria to multiply, sometimes leading to severe illness.

Using advanced computational methods, including AI, researchers analysed stool samples from over 12,000 people across 45 countries. They discovered that specific gut microbiome patterns, or “signatures,” can predict whether a person’s gut is prone to colonisation by harmful Enterobacteriaceae. This correlation was found to hold true across different health conditions and geographic regions.

Interestingly, the study, published in Nature Microbiology, identified 135 gut microbe species associated with the absence of harmful Enterobacteriaceae. Among these protective species is a group of bacteria called Faecalibacterium. These bacteria break down dietary fibre to produce short-chain fatty acids, which are known to guard against infections.

Dr Alexandre Almeida, senior author and researcher at the University of Cambridge, emphasized the significance of diet in maintaining gut health. “Our results suggest that what we eat is potentially very important in controlling the likelihood of infection with a range of bacteria, including E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae because this changes our gut environment to make it more hostile to invaders,” he explained.

He further added, “By eating fibre in foods like vegetables, beans, and whole grains, we can provide the raw material for our gut bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids-compounds that can protect us from these pathogenic bugs.”

While probiotics have been touted for their health benefits, the study suggests they may not directly alter the gut environment to the same extent as dietary fibre. This highlights the crucial role of fibre in fostering beneficial bacteria and crowding out harmful ones.

Infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, such as pneumonia and meningitis, can be life-threatening. By incorporating fibre-rich foods into daily meals, individuals may significantly reduce their risk of such infections, paving the way for a healthier gut and a stronger immune system.

As research continues to shed light on the intricate relationship between diet and health, the message is clear: boosting your fibre intake is not just about digestion-it’s a powerful way to enhance your body’s natural defenses.

According to Sonia Narang, these natural and practical tips can empower individuals to take control of their health.

Here Are 5 Expert-Recommended Daily Routines For Managing Diabetes:

    1. Fenugreek Seed Water

Fenugreek seeds are a powerhouse of benefits for managing diabetes. These seeds contain soluble fibre that helps slow down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, thereby regulating blood sugar levels. To make fenugreek seed water, soak one tablespoon of seeds in a small amount of water overnight. Drink the infused water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This simple habit not only helps in reducing blood sugar levels but also increases insulin sensitivity. Regular consumption can lead to significant improvements in glucose metabolism.

    2. Onion Salad

Raw onions are a diabetic-friendly food that works wonders in lowering blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that consuming just 100 grams of raw onion can reduce blood sugar within four hours. Onions contain sulfur compounds and flavonoids that improve the body’s insulin response and reduce blood sugar levels. Incorporating onions into your daily meals as a salad or garnish is an easy and effective way to enhance your diabetes management plan. Besides, onions also have anti-inflammatory properties that promote overall health.

    3. Cold Pressed Oils

Choosing the right cooking oil plays a crucial role in managing diabetes. Refined oils often contain trans fats and an imbalanced omega-6 fatty acid profile, which can worsen inflammation and insulin resistance. Instead, switch to cold-pressed oils like mustard oil, coconut oil, or extra virgin olive oil. These oils have a balanced fatty acid profile and are rich in natural anti-inflammatory compounds. They help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and improve heart health, which is especially important for diabetics. Using cold-pressed oils in cooking can enhance the nutritional value of your meals while promoting better blood sugar control.

    4. Walking 500 Steps Post Meals

Regular physical activity is a cornerstone of diabetes management. Walking just 500 steps after every meal can make a significant difference. Post-meal walking activates your muscles, which use glucose from the bloodstream for energy, thus preventing sharp spikes in blood sugar levels. Additionally, it reduces the risk of insulin resistance, aids digestion, and supports weight management. This simple habit doesn’t require much time or effort but can have long-lasting benefits for your health.

    5. Amla Haldi Water at Night

Amla (Indian gooseberry) and turmeric (haldi) are two potent ingredients that can work wonders for diabetics. Amla is rich in chromium, which enhances insulin sensitivity, while turmeric contains curcumin, known for its blood sugar-lowering properties. To make amla haldi water, mix a teaspoon of amla juice and a pinch of turmeric powder in a glass of water and drink it before bedtime. This combination not only helps in better glucose metabolism but also reduces cholesterol levels and the toxic load that can affect insulin function.

Consistency is key, so start incorporating these practices into your routine and experience the benefits of improved blood sugar control and overall wellness.

  • Not Butter, Not Red Meat – Doctor Reveals Worst Food Hurting Your Liver

Not Butter, Not Red Meat – Doctor Reveals Worst Food Hurting Your Liver

Your liver is a vital organ responsible for detoxifying your body, producing bile, and storing essential nutrients. Maintaining its health should be a priority. When it comes to liver health, many of us assume that foods high in saturated fats, such as butter, ghee, or red meat, are the primary culprits. However, a recent revelation by Dr Adrian on Instagram has turned this notion on its head. The doctor identifies a surprising yet common ingredient in our diets as the most dangerous food for liver health: high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

Also Read: Liver Health: 5 Healthy Drinks To Cleanse Your Liver Naturally

High Fructose Corn Syrup: Worst Food For Liver

High fructose corn syrup is a widely used sweetener found in an array of processed foods, including cookies, candies, breakfast cereals, soft drinks, and even some sauces. Unlike glucose, which is readily used by the body for energy, fructose is processed differently. When consumed in large amounts, fructose is metabolized primarily in the liver, where it is converted into fat. Over time, this accumulation of fat can lead to a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Research has shown a strong link between excessive HFCS consumption and the development of NAFLD. The problem lies in the way fructose is processed. Unlike other sugars, fructose doesn’t stimulate insulin secretion or promote satiety. This can lead to overconsumption, weight gain, and increased fat production in the liver, thereby elevating the risk of liver damage.

“If you think meat or saturated fats like ghee or butter are the worst for your liver, think again! These are actually fine in moderation,” says Dr. Adrian. “The real issue is the hidden sugars in processed foods, specifically high fructose corn syrup.”

Foods to Avoid For Liver Health:

To protect your liver health, it is crucial to minimize your intake of foods containing HFCS. Here are some common sources:

    • Soft Drinks and Energy Drinks: These beverages are loaded with HFCS, contributing to excessive sugar intake.
    • Packaged Snacks: Cookies, candies, and other sweet treats often contain HFCS to enhance flavour and shelf life.
    • Breakfast Cereals: Many cereals marketed as “healthy” are packed with hidden sugars, including HFCS.
    • Processed Sauces: Ketchup, barbecue sauce, and salad dressings are surprising sources of HFCS.

Reading ingredient labels carefully and opting for natural or homemade alternatives can go a long way in protecting your liver.

Here Are 7 Foods That Are Good for Your Liver

While avoiding harmful foods is important, incorporating liver-friendly options into your diet is equally crucial. Here are some foods that promote liver health:

    1. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and arugula are rich in antioxidants that help detoxify the liver.
    2. Cruciferous Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts support liver enzyme production and aid in detoxification.
    3. Fatty Fish: Salmon, mackerel, and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce liver inflammation.
    4. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds provide essential nutrients that support liver function.
    5. Turmeric: This spice contains curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
    6. Green Tea: Rich in catechins, green tea helps improve liver enzyme levels and reduce fat buildup.
    7. Garlic: Garlic activates liver enzymes that help flush out toxins and contains selenium, which protects the liver.

While high fructose corn syrup may seem harmless, its long-term effects on liver health are significant and should not be overlooked. By minimizing processed foods and prioritizing liver-friendly options, you can take proactive steps toward a healthier life.

Remember, small dietary changes can have a big impact on your overall health. Your liver will thank you!

  • OpenAI’s legal battle with Elon Musk reveals internal turmoil over avoiding AI ‘dictatorship’

OpenAI’s legal battle with Elon Musk reveals internal turmoil over avoiding AI ‘dictatorship’

A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence “dictatorship” is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker’s ongoing shift into a for-profit company.

Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits.

Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully.

The world’s richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT.

“OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk’s filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity.

OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland.

At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI’s CEO.

Musk also wanted the job, according to emails revealed as part of the court case, but grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity.

“The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI,” said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don’t want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you’ve shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.”

In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman’s desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced.

OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk’s early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs.

It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.”

“Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI’s board in early 2018.

Musk didn’t immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday.

Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition.

“He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. OpenAI said Friday that Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration.

New Study Reveals Drinking Coffee May Boost Lifespan By Nearly 2 Years

Drinking coffee could add almost two years of healthy living to one’s life, according to a new study that reviewed previously published research. The study, published in Ageing Research Reviews journal, found that the benefits of drinking coffee “correspond to an average increase in healthspan of 1.8 years.” Researchers from Portugal suggested that as the global population ages, regular, moderate consumption of coffee could play an important role in supporting a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
“We know that the world’s population is aging faster than ever, which is why it’s increasingly important to explore dietary interventions which may allow people to not only live longer but also healthier lives,” said Rodrigo Cunha, from the University of Coimbra in Portugal and lead author of the study. Coffee, a widely studied commodity, has been shown to reduce deaths from various causes, including lowering the risk of heart disease, cognitive decline, and chronic diseases, among others.
While commonly associated with caffeine, coffee contains a mixture of over 2,000 potentially bioactive compounds, including those that offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, reduce neuroinflammation, and regulate insulin sensitivity. “Our review underlines the role regular, moderate coffee consumption can play in mediating against the biological mechanisms which naturally slow or fail as we get older — triggering a range of potential health issues and comorbidities,” Cunha explained.
Furthermore, the team noted that studies suggest nutritional “anti-ageing” interventions may have a gender bias, favouring either men or women. However, the ageing-related benefits of coffee were found in both sexes. For the review, the authors specifically focused on studies examining how coffee affects biological processes that contribute to ageing, including genomic instability and cell mutations.
Although older adults are traditionally advised to reduce or avoid coffee, the authors suggested that clinical guidelines should now be re-evaluated in light of compelling scientific evidence supporting coffee’s role in healthy ageing. “Traditional clinical recommendations have at times overlooked coffee’s role in healthy aging, but with a strong research base around how regular consumption can potentially reduce some of the most chronic diseases facing society, it is likely time to re-evaluate these,” Cunha said.
However, the exact mechanisms by which coffee and its components contribute to extending healthy life remain unclear, and future research could explore this further, the researchers concluded.

  • How To Increase Iron Absorption? Nutritionist Reveals 3 Simple Tips

How To Increase Iron Absorption? Nutritionist Reveals 3 Simple Tips

Iron is an essential mineral that our body needs in abundance. It keeps our blood flowing and boosts our overall immunity. While some are naturally blessed with high iron levels, others are not, especially women. An iron deficiency can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and even pale skin. If you have an iron deficiency, you may have been advised to eat certain foods, but even then, your iron levels may not show any signs of improvement. So, where are you going wrong? Is there anything slowing down the absorption of iron into your body? Let’s find out from nutritionist Deepsikha Jain:
Also Read: Can Dates And Raisins Help Increase Your Iron Levels? Here’s What You Should Know

Here Are 3 Ways You Can Increase The Absorption Of Iron In Your Body:

    1. Enrich Your Diet With Iron-Rich Foods

To increase iron absorption, Deepsikha recommends incorporating foods such as green leafy vegetables, legumes, dates, and pomegranates into your diet. All of these are high in iron and will help boost your iron levels. The recommended daily amount of iron depends on your age and gender. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an adult male should aim for about 8 mg, whereas an adult female should aim for 18 mg.

    2. Do Not Pair Iron-Rich Foods With Tea/Coffee

Many of us love sipping tea and coffee throughout the day. However, make sure you’re not pairing it with foods rich in iron. Jain says that this can interfere with the absorption of iron in your body. Tea and coffee contain caffeine and tannin, both of which are known to slow down and reduce iron absorption. As per a study published in the Japan Journal of Clinical and Medical Research, iron absorption can be reduced by up to 35% when consumed with tea, and by 62% when consumed with coffee.

    3. Harness The Power Of Vitamin C-Rich Foods

The nutritionist also suggests pairing iron-rich foods with a source of vitamin C. The reason for this is that vitamin C helps create an acidic environment, which helps dissolve iron more adequately. So, the time you’re having a green leafy salad, go ahead and squeeze some lemon juice over it. By doing so, your body will be better able to absorb iron, thus increasing your overall iron levels.

What Foods Have The Highest Iron Content?

When we think of iron-rich foods, spinach is probably the first thing that comes to mind. And why not? It is an excellent source of iron and can also be incorporated into several recipes. However, there are several other iron-rich foods that can make for a great addition to your diet. These include chia seeds, dried apricots, amaranth, and cashew nuts. All of these have a high iron content, which is why you should make a conscious effort to include them in your meals.
