    State roundup: Freeman football advances to State 2B semifinal; Scotties girls soccer earns program’s first state title

    Freeman put up a bunch of points on Saturday, but its defense really came to play. 

    The fifth-seeded Scotties’ defense shut out fourth-seeded Onalaska en route to a 28-0 win in a State 2B quarterfinal at Tiger Stadium in Centralia. 

    Freeman (10-1) forced three turnovers on downs, in addition to retrieving a fumble on defense. The Loggers (11-2) averaged more than 52 points per game this season. 

    “We have a phenomenal team”, Freeman first year coach Mike McKeown said. “And I don’t just mean the guys on the field – our young guys help us prepare week in and week out. Our defensive coordinator did a phenomenal job putting kids in the right spots.”

    The Scotties advanced to a state semifinal in their first season in the 2B classification, but it’s their second semi in the past three seasons – Freeman reached the 1A semifinals in 2022, bowing to eventual state champ Royal 57-21.

    “Football is such a special game,” McKeown said. “It requires so many moving pieces, and we have such a special group that got us here.” 

    Freeman junior quarterback Logan Schultz connected with receiver Nash McLean for a 30-yard first quarter touchdown pass, and the rest was up to the defense.

    “We hit them first, and they had nothing to respond with,” Schultz said. “We knew what they were going to run, and we stopped them on defense, and spread things out on offense.”

    Schultz threw two touchdowns and ran for another. He leads the classification in passing yards.

    Gonzaga Prep to face No. 1 Camas in 4A semifinal: The Papermakers (12-0) defeated eighth-seeded Arlington (10-2) 35-21 at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas to advance in the 4A bracket.

    They will host the fifth-seeded Bullpups (12-0) in a semifinal on Saturday at 1 p.m. at McKenzie Stadium in Camas. G-Prep outlasted fourth-seeded Kennedy Catholic 34-28 at Highline Stadium in Burien on Friday to advance. 

    Anacortes 55, West Valley 13: The visiting, seventh-seeded Eagles (11-1) saw their perfect season ended with a lopsided loss to the second-seeded Seahawks (11-1). Anacortes hosts sixth-seeded W.F. West (11-1) in a semifinal on Saturday. 

    Almira/Coulee-Hartline 14, Neah Bay 12: The fourth-seeded Warriors (10-2) edged the fifth-seeded Red Devils (10-2) in a quarterfinal at Lions Field. ACH takes on No. 1 Liberty Christian (Richland) (11-0) in a semifinal on Saturday. The Patriots beat ACH 50-36 on Sept. 20 in a nonleague game.

    Girls soccer

    Freeman 3, Mount Vernon Christian 0: Junior striker Rylee Russell is a goal-scoring machine, and she added to her state-leading total on Saturday. Russell scored twice and the Scotties (21-0) shut out the Hurricanes (17-4-1) in the State 2B/1B championship game at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

    It is the first state championship Freeman soccer has won, and the first title for the school since 2018 when baseball won.

    Russell ends the season with 64 goals, most in the state across all classifications and tied for second in the country according to MaxPreps. 

    Goalie Kelsey Hollen made 13 saves and did not give up a single goal in four state games.

    Freeman scored 152 goals this year and allowed just 12. The Scotties were the only team in the state across all classifications to enjoy a “perfect” season – all 21 wins came in regulation with no ties. 

    “I’m so proud of them for battling.” Freeman coach Dave Ellis said. “This was the goal they set at the beginning of the year as a family.”

    After a scoreless first half, Russell got the Scotties on the board 4 minutes after intermission. 

    “Rylee is a good scorer,” Ellis said. “She really allowed us to open things up and exploit some things.”

    “We made good passes in the second half. We made sure we found the right people.” Russell said. “We wanted to make history. We wanted to be the first.”

    Freshman forward Nora Gass scored midway through the second half, and Russell sealed the game with just under 10 minutes to play. Senior Morgan LaMotte assisted on both of Russell’s goals. 

    “It means so much to see all of our players step on that field with so much grit.” senior Aubrey Gregory said. “I couldn’t ask for a better team to play with.”

    Iowa Colony had no trouble in its bidistrict playoff contest.

    The Pioneers raced past Killeen Ellison, 47-6, Friday in a Class 5A-Region 3, Division 2 opening round playoff game at Freedom Field.

    The Pioneers play Pflugerville in the area round. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daikin Stadium in Waller.

    Ellison entered with one of the best passing attacks in the state, with quarterback Sidney Holland Jr. finishing third in passing yards after the regular season with more than 3,000 yards. Iowa Colony held him Friday to 48 passing yards. The Pioneers created pressure with three sacks and three hurries.

    Ellison had more success on the ground, producing 209 rushing yards. However, the Eagles saw 63 yards come from one run. Aside from the large chunk play, Ellison averaged under 4.5 yards per carry. The Eagles’ six points were the fewest scored this season, in which they averaged more than 40 points per game.

    Meanwhile, Iowa Colony recorded its fourth game of holding opponents under double digits.

    Iowa Colony’s offense continued to hum, topping 40 points for the fifth time in the last six games. Quarterback Carson White was 12-of-17 passing with three downs. He also rushed six times for 99 yards and two scores. He rushed for an 85-yard touchdown and later added another score.

    White has thrown three or more touchdowns in six of the Pioneers’ 11 games and rushed for multiple touchdowns in five.

    The sophomore signal caller threw touchdowns to Jacody Miles, Jayden Warren and Antoine Martin Jr. Miles led the team with five receptions and 77 yards. Warren, Ian Hill and Martin each finished with two receptions and more than 20 receiving yards.

    Iowa Colony rushed for 300 yards, averaging 7.5 per carry.

    Aaron Tenner led the way with 22 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown. Tenner topped 100 yards for the first time this season. Denim Barnes recorded 61 yards on eight attempts.

    Iowa Colony improved to 10-1, marking the second 10-win season in program history. During the bidistrict round, the Pioneers are also 2-0 at Freedom Field.

    Pflugerville finished fourth in District 11-5A, Division 2, yet beat San Antonio Burbank, 63-13, in the bidistrict round. Pflugerville’s three losses came by a combined 20 points.

    BCS FALLS IN SHOOTOUT: For the second time in the 2024 season, Brazosport Christian and Bellville Faith Academy met on the football field.

    As they did in the first meeting, the Eagles lost by one score to the explosive Faith Academy, falling 56-49 Friday at SAB Stadium in the TAPPS Division 3 area round contest.

    The loss ends Brazosport Christian’s season with a 4-7 record overall. Brazosport Christian had won at least six games in the previous two seasons, but head coach Ricky Austin put together a tougher non-district slate to prepare his team for the postseason better.

    The preseason schedule with increased competition included Faith Academy, which Brazosport Christian knew it might potentially see down the line. The Eagles lost 56-48 in the first meeting as they had begun working pieces back into the lineup after injuries plagued them early on in the season.

    Brazosport Christian recovered from its 0-5 start to the season to win four straight, including two District 6 contests against Galveston O’Connell and Baytown Christian. The Eagles lost their regular season finale to Divine Savior to finish second in the district, matching up with Faith Academy, which won District 5.

    Bellville lost its season opener to Waco Vanguard Prep but has captured 10 straight victories after Friday’s win. The Knights topped 50 points for the 11th game this season and averaged 72 per contest. Faith Academy’s scoring explosions included 70, 81, 93 and 148-point outbursts.

    Brazosport Christian kept it competitive by holding the Knights to fewer than 60 points for a second contest. The Eagles’ 49 points are the most in a loss this season. Brazosport Christian allowed 50 or more points in five games, including the last two.

    The shootout scene on Friday was familiar to Faith Academy, which played in five games during the regular season where both teams scored at least 40 points. The Knights went 4-1 in those contests.

    Brazosport Christian’s only experience in such contests came against Faith Academy. The Eagles finished 0-3 in one-score games.

    Brazosport Christian will lose three players to graduation, including quarterback and linebacker Luke Coburn, wide receiver and defensive back Lance Klepzig and kicker and defensive lineman Josh Simmons.

    The Eagles return many of their offensive weapons, including Kane Knighton, Hayden Blagg, David Kier and Kole Calhoun.

    Eastern View 23, Courtland 21: A late-game rally from Eastern View, cemented by a two-yard touchdown run from quarterback AP Hull and a big play from Jaheim Frye, sealed the deal on Senior Night as the Cyclones took down visiting Courtland in Battlefield District action on Friday night.

    After Hull’s touchdown, which came with just over two minutes left to play, Frye sealed the game with an interception of Cougars (7-3, 5-2) quarterback Chieftain Watson, giving the Cyclones (7-3, 6-1) the ball with less than two minutes left.

    Despite not getting points on their final drive of the game, Eastern View was able to waste enough clock off and force Courtland deep into their own territory to prevent any late-game drama in the process.

    Both teams are headed to the upcoming VHSL Region 4B playoffs and will soon find out their seeding and opponent before next week’s quarterfinal matchups.

    North Stafford 27, Colonial Forge 17: The North Stafford Wolverines finish the regular season in a three-way tie the top of the Commonwealth District after a big 27-17 victory at home over Colonial Forge on Friday night.

    Senior Micah Brown led the Wolverines with 171 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Junior quarterback Chase Sullivan added 141 total yards and one touchdown in the win.

    Colonial Forge (7-3, 3-3) couldn’t get much going as they were held to just 90 total yards in the first half. Quarterback Brock Brimhall threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.

    North Stafford (8-2, 5-1) ended the regular season in a first-place tie with Stafford and Riverbend after going winless just one year ago.

    Caroline 42, James Monroe 14: The Caroline High School football team secured its first winning season since 2008 with a 42-14 home victory over James Monroe Friday night.

    The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cavaliers who ended their season with a 6-4 record, identical to their mark 16 years ago.

    James Monroe (3-7, 1-6) moves on to the Region 3B playoffs.

    Caroline (6-4, 4-3) rushed for 303 yards to earn the win in its season finale.

    Senior running back Vladimir Joacin Jr. powered his way to 151 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Cavaliers’ defense scored on two interception returns for touchdowns — a 35-yarder from defensive end Ty’Eir Williams and a 69-yard return by senior defensive back Malik Johnson, who also rushed for 88 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Tre Coles from his quarterback position.

    Louisa 57, Goochland 7: Dyzier Carter got the scoring party start with an interception return for a score and then added three more first-half scores to help Louisa cruise to a win that closed out an unbeaten Jefferson District regular season.

    Carter’s three offensive scores came on his three receptions from quarterback Caleb Brady. Jayden Seaberry also got loose on the ground with 106 rushing yards and two scores for the Lions (8-2, 7-0), who awaits its Region 5C opponent for net week.

    Jay’lon Butler also did his part in the win, rushing for 220 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries as Colonial Beach notched its first district win of the season, snapping a seven-game losing streak in the process.

    CANTON — Canton’s defense limited Quinlan Ford to only 175 yards of total offense as the victors improved to 8-1 for the season and 3-1 in District 6-4A-II play.

    Ford dropped to 6-3 and 2-2.

    Ford quarterback Payton Wallen led the Panther rushers with 46 yards on 12 carries. Mason Tigue ran for 43 yards and a TD on nine carries and James Barker ran for 28 yards on five carries.

     

    Commerce 54

    Rains 19

    COMMERCE — Quarterback Grant Sherley and running back Jordan McMurray both rushed for more than 100 yards during Commerce’s District 7-3A-I win over Rains.

    Sherley ran for 175 yards on 10 carries, with a long run of  65 yards and was 2-of-9 passing for 59 yards and a TD. He earned the Herald-Banner Athlete of the Week award.

    McMurray rushed for 186 yards on 20 carries, to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 1,031 yards on 141 carries. He’s averaging 7.3 yards per carry and 114.6 yards per game.

    Te’dreiyon Nash caught the two passes for 59 yards and a TD as Commerce improved to 4-5 for the season and 3-2 in District 7-3A-I play. Rains fell to 2-7 and 2-3,

    Harmony 19

    Lone Oak 7

    GILMER — Harmony surprised the Lone Oak Buffaloes to go 2-7 for the season and 2-3 in District 9-3A-II.

    Lone Oak fell to 7-2 and 3-2.

    Lone Oak’s top passers were Slayde Parnell (7-13, 116 yards, 1 TD) and Wyatt Marker (3-of-9, 22 yards).

    Lone Oak’s top receivers were Tre Hubbard (4-27), Corbin Johnson (2-34, 1 TD), Daniel Barhona (2-33), Max Ramirez (1-28) and Nick Counts (1-16).

    Moi Perez led the Lone Oak rushers with 49 yards on 11 carries and Marker ran for 20 yards on six carries.

     

    Tioga 60

    Wolfe City 36

    WOLFE CITY — Tioga won a battle with Wolfe City for the 6-2A-I lead at 5-0 as the Wolves fell to 4-1.

    Tioga quarterback Rocky Urich, who was averaging 330 yards passing per game, went 12-of-20 passing for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

    H.D. Davis, the leading rusher in the state, ran for 309 yards and two TDs on 49 carries for Wolfe City. Davis has now rushed for 2,452 yards and 29 touchdowns on 217 carries this season. He’s averaging 11.3 yards per carry and 272.4 yards per game.

    Davis also scored on a 43-yard touchdown pass as Wolfe City quarterback Noah Adams went 16-of-34 passing for 178 yards and three TDs.

    Wolfe City’s other top receivers were Brennon Russell (5-81, 1 TD) , Casen Pessel (7-28, 1 TD) and Carson Herron (2-22).

     

    Maud 22

    Cumby 20

    CUMBY — Cumby quarterback Chett Vaughan was 9-of-16 passing for 135 yards and ran for 77 yards on 11 carries during the Trojans’ District 9-2A-II loss to Maud.

    Braylon Boggs ran for 73 yards and two TDs for Cumby and Chayton Vaughan ran for a 9-yard TD and also caught three passes for 25 yards.

    Boggs caught three passes for 28 yards.

    Maud improved to 5-4 for the season and stayed undefeated in District 9-2A-II at 5-0.

    Cumby dropped 4-5 overall and 2-3 in district play.

     

    Saint Jo 56

    Campbell 0

    CAMPBELL — Saint Jo quarterback Devin Stewart was 7-of-9 passing for 184 yards and four touchdowns during the Panthers’ six-man win over Campbell.

    Saint Jo is now 9-0 for the season and Campbell dropped to 2-7 for the season and 0-3 in district play.

     

    Gold-Burg 70

    Fannindel 25

    STONEBURG — Gold-Burg rushed for 436 yards and six touchdowns during a six-man win over Fannindel.

    Jayton Epperson led the victors with 254 yards and three TDs on 11 carries and Paul Jones ran for 125 yards and two scores on six carries.

    Kalob Runnels led the Fannindel rushers with 63 yards and two TDs on 13 carries. Daylon Powell ran for 36 yards on nine carries.

    Fannindel quarterback Noah Butler was 7-of-10 passing for 120 yards and two TDs as the Falcons dropped to 3-6 for the season.

    After Friday’s win over Brantford, the Stratford Hunter Steel Warriors came up short Saturday in Cambridge.

    Quinn Kipfer’s second-period goal was all the offence Stratford could generate in a 2-1 loss.

    Kyler Morgan scored both Redhawks’ goals. Morgan opened the scoring in the first period on the power play and then buried the winner 3:58 into the third period.

    Cambridge goalie Lennart Neisse made 43 saves to preserve the win. Warriors netminder Carter McDougall stopped 14 shots.

    Stratford (11-5-0) is third in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference.

    Lincolns sweep weekend games

    St. Marys added two more wins to its record this past weekend.

    The first-place Lincolns beat Caledonia 4-1 on Friday. Luca Spagnolo scored twice, and Noah Vandenbrink and Owen Voortman added single markers. Jacob McLellan notched a pair of assists. St. Marys’ goalie Colby Booth-Housego stopped 27 shots.

    Brody Leet replied for the Corvairs, and David Penner made 32 saves.

    Sunday in Welland, Hayden Barch and Chase MacQueen-Spence each scored twice in a 5-0 win. Ryan Cornfield added a power-play tally. Vandenbrink and Ryan Hodkinson both had a pair of helpers, and Nico Armellin stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the season.

    Ivan Kastelan made 39 saves for Welland.

    St. Marys is now 14-1-0 and leads the GOJHL with 28 points.

    Cyclones win fourth straight

    Wylie Birkett scored 6:42 into overtime to give the Listowel Cyclones a 3-2 home win Friday over Cambridge.

    Dylan Szymanowski and Teague Vader also scored for Listowel (10-3-1), which has won four straight. Riley Arts backstopped Listowel with 28 saves.

    Ryder Simpson and Kyler Morgan scored for the Redhawks. Brandon Balcar made 49 saves.

    Braves earn five of six points

    Tavistock snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Woodstock and followed that up with three more weekend points.

    Tavistock cooled off the red hot Navy Vets on Friday with a 5-2 home victory. Tyler Brezynskie and Nicholas Hambly each had a goal and assist for the Braves. Grady Murphy, Blair Stokes and Marc Dionne added single markers. Lander Hartley stopped 29 shots in the win.

    Kyle Caron had a goal and assist for the Navy Vets. Logan Pace-Roth also scored. Scott Rodrigue made 29 saves.

    Each team had a power-play tally.

    Murphy, who competed in the PJHL Prospect Game earlier in the day, scored twice in Saturday’s 4-2 win in Paris. Tanner Hunt and Trent Davies had the other goals. Hambly picked up two assists, and Kaden Lange stopped 31 shots for the win in net.

    Jack Kersey and Spencer Edwards scored for the Titans. James Gall made 46 saves.

    Tavistock scored on two of seven power plays, and Paris went 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

    Sunday in Dorchester, Jack Hodge and Carter Arseneau gave the Braves a 2-0 first-period lead, but the Dolphins’ Dylan Dundas sent the game to overtime with a pair of goals, and Mavin Smith ended it with a power-play goal 6:55 into the extra frame.

    Hartley made 32 saves for the Braves (6-9-0-1), and Dorchester counterpart Eric McDonald made 36 saves.

    Hawks take one point

    Mitchell picked up one of four points thanks to a 6-5 overtime loss Sunday in Fergus.

    Ben Medhurst had a goal and two assists against the Whalers. Patrick and Owen Holloway had a goal and assist apiece, and Ben Tenhag and Cole Hislop also scored. Colin Gibbings made 27 saves for the Hawks.

    Andrew McClure and Tyler Ewald both scored twice for Fergus. Boden Brimmell and Jacob Lesser had the other goals. Trevor Woods stopped 19 shots.

    Mitchell went 2-for-6 on the power play, and Fergus was 1-for-3.

    Friday at home, Ryan Gansevles scored the lone goal in an 8-1 loss to Wingham. Aidan Hill was pulled after allowing seven goals on 32 shots. Gibbings stopped 10 of 11 in relief.

    Jesse Coombs, Tanner Dietz and Micah Kraayenbrink all had two goals in the win. Logan Burnham and Noah Bloemberg had the other goals. James Hopper made 33 saves.

    Mitchell dropped to 5-6-0-3.

    Fighting Irish comeback falls short

    The Ontario Super Hockey League’s Stratford Fighting Irish fell short in a 6-4 loss Saturday in Alvinston. Graham Brulotte and Jaden Peca had a goal and assist apiece for the Irish (3-4-0-0), who trailed 4-1 in the third period and scored twice in the last two minutes before running out of time.

    Zach Magwood and Justin Murray also scored for Stratford. Jared Nash added two assists. Zach Weir made 41 saves in the Irish net.

    Ross Krieger scored twice for Alvinston. Brennan Feasey, Jacob Chantler, James McEwan and Jamie Schaafsma had single markers. Nolan DeKoning made 49 saves.

    Royals lose in Ripley

    Tavistock lost 4-2 Saturday in Ripley in its lone Ontario Elite Hockey League game of the weekend.

    Lucas Bast, Jeremy Munro and Patrick Vulgan scored for the Royals (3-2-0-0). Graeme Noye made 28 saves.

    Cody Britton scored twice for the Wolves. Ethan Skinner and Garrett Meurs had the other goals. Jason Hamilton made 34 saves.

    Milverton dropped a pair of one-goal games this past weekend.

    Riverside 3, Colville 0: Margaret St. Amand scored two goals and the second-seeded Rams (6-7) defeated the visiting third-seeded Crimson Hawks (3-9) in the Northeast A second-place game. Riverside moves on to the District 5/6 crossover on Saturday.

    Cross country

    District 6 4A: Kamiakin’s Ezra Teeples, Chase Kennard and Noah Thomas swept the top three spots in the boys race, but Lewis and Clark placed five of the next eight runners to take the team title at Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Walla Walla.

    Brody Graham led the way for the Tigers, finishing fourth in 15:40.50. LC finished with 39 points, Kamiakin (52 points) was second and Mead (58 points) placed third.

    Gonzaga Prep’s Erin McMahon edged teammate Claire Gee by 0.61 seconds to win the girls race and led the Bullpups (42 points) to the district championship. Mead (88 points) was second and Lewis and Clark (92 points) placed third.

    District 6 3A: Mt. Spokane’s Kade Brownell (15:20.21) and Parker Westermann (15:21.09) finished 1-2 in the boys race, but Cheney topped the Wildcats 52-67 for the team title. Cheney placed sixth through eighth, led by Samuel Hilton in 15:37.88.

    Mt. Spokane’s Jane Wycoff (18:21.82) won the girls race, followed by Central Valley’s Mackenzie Munn (18:49.70) and Cheney’s Hannah Ward (18;53.83). The Wildcats (45 points) took the team district championship, University (67 points) was second and Cheney (89 points) finished third.

    District 5/6 2A crossover: Ellensburg’s Mystic Hammond (15:04.77) won the boys race by 48 seconds, leading the Bulldogs (25 points) to the team title at Apple Ridge XC Course in Yakima. West Valley’s Evan McKenzie (15:52.58) was second and the Eagles (101) were a distance second to Ellensburg.

    Ellensburg’s Grace Beachy (17:43.01) won the girls race by nearly a minute over West Valley’s Hadassah Duff (18:35.63). The Bulldogs (60 points) won the team title and West Valley (72) was second.

    District 5/6 1A crossover: Colville’s Malik Ortiz (15:48.90) won the boys race and led the Crimson Hawks to a team title at Apple Ridge XC Course. Colville (53 points) edged Lakeside (53 points) and Cascade (110).

    Medical Lake’s Kaylee Demler (18:38.40) won the girls race and Lakeside took the team title.

    The Eagles (54 points) outpaced Cascade (66 points) and Naches Valley (108).

    District 6 2B/1B: Chewelah’s Emmitt Warren won the boys race in 16:15.50, but St. George’s (57 points) placed four in the top 10 to take the team title on Friday at Colfax Golf Club. Shawn Jones led the Dragons in third at 16:37.50. Chewelah (79 points) was second and Freeman (91 points) placed third.

    Regan Thomas (18:22.78) and Josie McLaughlin (19:10.51) of St. George’s finished 1-2 in the girls race, and the Dragons (44 points) outpaced second-place Garfield-Palouse (77 points) and Valley Christian (82 points).

    HARRISON — The Troy football team had its season end with a 43-7 loss to Harrison Friday night in the D-II, Region 8 playoffs.

    Troy finishes the season with a record of 6-5.

    Tippecanoe 49,

    Talawanda 7

    TIPP CITY — Tippecanoe quarterback Larkin Thomas and receiver Jackson Davis continued to put up big numbers as the Red Devils opened D-III, Region 12 playoff action with a win over Oxford Talawanda.

    Tippecanoe, 11-0, will host 9-2 St. Marys Friday night at Tipp City Park.

    Thomas and Davis hooked up early and often as Tipp opened a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to the win.

    Thomas was nearly perfect, completing 13 of 14 passes for 312 yards and five touchdowns.

    The sophomore has now thrown for 2,475 yards on the season, with 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

    Davis, a senior receiver, passed the 1,000 yard receiving mark on the season Friday night.

    He caught eight passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns Friday, giving him 63 catches on the season for,031 yards and 20 touchdowns.

    Tipp scored on its first five possessions of the game.

    On the opening possession, Davis hauled in a 27-yard TD pass from Thomas.

    On Tipp’s next possession, Thomas would run 14 yards for a score.

    Davis then caught passes of 32 and 47 yards from Thomas for TDs to make it 28-0.

    Will Strong capped the first half, catching a 27-yard TD pass from Thomas.

    In the second half, Cade Havill caught a 41-yard TD pass and James Merry scored on a five-yard run.

    Talawanda had one scoring opportunity in the first half. But, on fourth an goal from the Tipp 3, the Red Devils defense smothered Braves quarterback Cale Leitch back at the 11-yard line to give Tipp the ball.

    Strong finished with three catches for 56 yards and Havill had two receptions for 47 yards.

    Thomas led the rushing attack with 70 yards on five carries and Xavier Melton had 54 yards rushing on nine carries.

    Owen Bailey was a perfect 6-for-6 on PATs and Rohan Nicholls kicked the final PAT.

    Collin Isaac led the defense with 15 tackles and Riley Nicholls added eight tackles.

    Miami East 14,

    Milton-Union 6

    CASSTOWN — The Miami East football team avenged a regular season loss to the Bulldogs to advance in the D-V, Region 20 playoffs.

    Miami East, 8-3, will play at 10-1 West Liberty-Salem Friday night.

    Milton-Union closes the season with a record of 6-5.

    Coldwater 58,

    Covington 0

    COLDWATER — The Covington football team found the going tough in a D-VI, Region 24 playoff game Friday night.

    The Buccs close the season at 3-8.

    Landin Cassel was five of 17 passing for 34 yards and Tanner Palsgrove had 42 yards rushing on 11 carries.

    Lehman Catholic 46,

    Riverside 13

    SIDNEY — The Lehman Catholic football team beat Riverside for a second time Friday night to advance in D-VII, Region 28 playoff action at Sidney Memorial Stadium/30&0 Field.

    Lehman, 9-2, will play at 10-1 Ansonia Friday night in second-round action.
